Lava tubes - Potential shelters for habitats

Natural caverns occur on the moon in the form of 'lava tubes', which are the drained conduits of underground lava rivers. The inside dimensions of these tubes measure tens to hundreds of meters, and their roofs are expected to be thicker than 10 meters. Consequently, lava tube interiors offer an environment that is naturally protected from the hazards of radiation and meteorite impact. Further, constant, relatively benign temperatures of -20 C prevail. These are extremely favorable environmental conditions for human activities and industrial operations. Significant operational, technological, and economical benefits might result if a lunar base were constructed inside a lava tube.

Time-dependent profiles of lava flows

This work investigates the combined effects of a time-dependent effusion rate and a spatially varying viscosity on the thickness profile of a flowing lava. Relatively simple governing equations are formulated as a primitive dynamical model for these two influences on lava flow morphology. Free boundary solutions for the profile of the flow and its extent are presented and analyzed for different boundary conditions at the source of the flow and several models for the spatial dependence of the viscosity. The results presented here suggest that time dependence in the flow depth at the source and the form of the viscosity variation are significant influences on the morphology and dimensions of lava flows. Moreover, this analysis implies that time-dependent source conditions may contribute to the scatter in plots of eruption rate versus flow length and disparities between field and laboratory estimates of lava viscosity.

Lava flow-field morphology: A case study from Mount Etna, Sicily

The morphology of lava flows is often taken as an indicator of the broad chemical composition of the lava, especially when interpreting extraterrestrial volcanoes using spacecraft images. The historical lavas of the active volcano Mount Etna in Sicily provide an excellent opportunity to examine the controls on flow field morphology. In this study only flow produced by flank eruptions after the middle of the 18th century are examined. The final form of a flow-field may be more indicative of the internal plumbing of the volcano, which may control such factors as the effusion, rate, duration of eruption, volume of available magma, rate of de-gassing, and lava rheology. Different flow morphologies on Etna appear to be a good indicator of differing conditions within the volcanic pile. Thus the spatial distribution of different flow types on an extraterrestrial volcano may provide useful information about the plumbing conditions of that volcano, rather than necessarily providing information on the composition of materials erupted.

Lava thicknesses: Implications for rheological and crustal development

The morphology of a lava flow is strongly influenced by its rheological structure. The rheological structure is, in turn, dependent on numerous factors including: (1) bulk composition, (2) crystallingity, (3) vesicularity, and (4) crustal development. Identifying which of the latter factors are most significant, and hence most readily investigated by remote-sensing techniques, is necessary to clarify short-term objectives and expectations from the study of Martian lava flows. Insights into the rheological controls on flow morphology are provided by variations in thickness of undrained lava streams on Etna and Vesuvius, Southern Italy. Both pahoehoe and aa lavas were studied.

Taylor instability in rhyolite lava flows

A refined Taylor instability model is developed to describe the surface morphology of rhyolite lava flows. The effect of the downslope flow of the lava on the structures resulting from the Taylor instability mechanism is considered. Squire's (1933) transformation is developed for this flow in order to extend the results to three-dimensional modes. This permits assessing why ridges thought to arise from the Taylor instability mechanism are preferentially oriented transverse to the direction of lava flow. Measured diapir and ridge spacings for the Little and Big Glass Mountain rhyolite flows in northern California are used in conjunction with the model in order to explore the implications of the Taylor instability for flow emplacement. The model suggests additional lava flow features that can be measured in order to test whether the Taylor instability mechanism has influenced the flows surface morphology.

Lava flow surface textures - SIR-B radar image texture, field observations, and terrain measurements

SIR-B images, field observations, and small-scale (cm) terrain measurements are used to study lave flow surface textures related to emplacement processes of a single Hawaiian lava flow. Although smooth pahoehoe textures are poorly characterized on the SIR-B data, rougher pahoehoe types and the a'a flow portion show image textures attributed to spatial variations in surface roughness. Field observations of six distinct lava flow textural units are described and used to interpret modes of emplacement. The radar smooth/rough boundary between pahoehoe and a'a occurs at a vertical relief of about 10 cm on this lava flow. While direct observation and measurement most readily yield information related to lava eruption and emplacement processes, analyses of remote sensing data such as those acquired by imaging radars and altimeters can provide a means of quantifying surface texture, identifying the size and distribution of flow components, and delineating textural unit boundaries.

Finding and utilizing lunar lava tubes

Horz describes the evidence for lava tubes associated with rills in lunar photoimaging. These tubes have terrestrial counterparts as described by Billings, et al., and Gillet. The widths of these tubes range from 10s to 100s of meters. Their roof thickness are at least 0.125 to 0.25 times their widths and stand unsupported on the Moon. To confine one atmosphere of internal pressure, static roof thickness must be at least 16 m. Favorable locations of lava tubes may be surveyed using roving gravity meters on Doodle Bugs, which consist of platforms containing equipment for communication with Earth-based control stations. The stable -20 C temperature of the lava tubes should provide a workable habitat environment. The greater than 16 m of basalt in the roof should give adequate radiation and impact protection. Typically, after clearing entries and grading ramps, habitats might be placed in tubes and inflated. Later, larger habitats might be built by enclosing tube sections with compacted-regolith dams. The interior can then be sealed to hold an atmosphere. The huge lava tubes inferred from the photographs are capable of providing habitats hundreds of meters wide, in lengths of kilometers.

General patterns of flow field growth - Aa and blocky lavas

Lava flowfields consist of one or more flows. Four ideal emplacement regimes are recognized: that for single flows and that for flowfields dominated by (1) widening, (2) thickening, or (3) lengthening, as a result of generating new flows. Most aa and blocky lavas belong to the flowfield widening or single-flow regimes. These two regimes are analyzed assuming advance is controlled by the distal core of a flow, where motion is treated as steady, uniform, and laminar. Because of low deformation rates, the distal core is also approximated to a Newtonian fluid. Widening and, possibly, lengthening are ultimately limited by crustal resistance. After a critical cooling interval, new flows are generated from the upper reaches of the flowfield. A simple relation is derived linking flowfield dimensions and underlying slope to eruption duration, independent of terms involving gravity or lava chemistry and rheology. The relation well describes field data from several volcanoes (involving lava compositions from K phonolitic tephrite to dacite). This supports the premise that the overall growth of aa and blocky flowfields is systematic and also suggests that such growth may be predictable at timescales greater than, or similar to, the emplacement times of major flows.

Cooling rate of an active Hawaiian lava flow from nighttime spectroradiometer measurements

A narrow-band spectroradiometer has been used to make nighttime measurements of the Phase 50 eruption of Pu'u O'o, on the East Rift Zone of Kilauea Volcano, Hawaii. On February 19, 1992, a GER spectroradiometer was used to determine the cooling rate of an active lava flow. This instrument collects 12-bit data between 0.35 to 3.0 microns at a spectral resolution of 1-5 nm. Thirteen spectra of a single area on a pahoehoe flow field were collected over a 59 minute period (21:27-22:26 HST) from which the cooling of the lava surface has been investigated. A two-component thermal mixing model (Flynn, 1992) applied to data for the flow immediately on emplacement gave a best-fit crustal temperature of 768 C, a hot component at 1150 C, and a hot radiating area of 3.6 percent of the total area. Over a 52-minute period (within the time interval between flow resurfacings) the lava flow crust cooled by 358 to 410 C at a rate that was as high as 15 C/min. The observations have significance both for satellite observations of active volcanoes and for numerical models of the cooling of lava flows during their emplacement.

Reconstruction of the dynamics of the 1800-1801 Hualalai eruption: Implications for planetary lava flows

The 1800-1801 eruption of alkalic basalt from the Hualalai volcano, Hawaii provides a unique opportunity for investigating the dynamics of lava flow emplacement with eruption rates and compositions comparable to those that have been suggested for planetary eruptions. Field observations suggest new considerations must be used to reconstruct the emplacement of these lava flows. These observations are: (1) the flow traversed the 15 km from the vent to the sea so rapidly that no significant crust formed and an observation of the eruption reported that the flow reach the sea from the vent in approximately 1 hour; (2) the drainage of beds of xenolith nodules indicates a highly fluid, low viscosity lava; (3) overspills and other morphologic evidence for a very low viscosity host fluid; (4) no significant longitudinal increase in flow thickness that might be associated with an increase in the rheological properties of the lava; and (5) the relatively large size of channels associated with the flow, up to 80 meters across and several km long. Models for many geologic mass movements and fast moving fluids with various loadings and suspensions are discussed.

Lava crusts and flow dynamics

Lava flows can be considered as hot viscous cores within thinner, solidified crusts. Interaction between crust and core determines a flow's morphological and dynamical evolution. When the lava core dominates, flow advance approaches a steady state. When crusts are the limiting factor, advance is more irregular. These two conditions can be distinguished by a timescale ratio comparing rates of core deformation and crustal formation. Aa and budding pahoehoe lavas are used as examples of core- and crustal-dominated flows, respectively. A simple model describes the transition between pahoehoe and aa flow in terms of lava discharge rate, underlying slope, and either the thickness or velocity of the flow front. The model shows that aa morphologies are characterized by higher discharge rates and frontal velocities and yields good quantitative agreement with empirical relations distinguishing pahoehoe and aa emplacement on Hawaii.

Venusian pancake domes: Insights from terrestrial voluminous silicic lavas and thermal modeling

The so-called 'pancake' domes, and several other volcanoes on Venus, appear to represent large extrusions of silicic lava. Similar voluminous rhyolite lava flows, often associated with mantle plumes, are known on Earth. Venus' high ambient temperature, and insulation by the dome's brecciated carapace, both act to prolong cooling of a dome's interior, allowing for episodic lava input over an extended period of time. Field relations and aspect ratios of terrestrial voluminous rhyolite lavas imply continuous, non-episodic growth, reflecting tapping of a large volume of dry, anatectic silicic magma. Petrogenetically, the venusian domes may be analogous to chains of small domes on Earth, which represent 'leakage' of evolved material from magma bodies fractionating from much more mafic liquids.

Mapping the distribution of vesicular textures on silicic lavas using the Thermal Infrared Multispectral Scanner

To investigate the effect of vesicularity on TIMS (Thermal Infrared Multispectral Scanner) imagery independent of chemical variations, we studied a large rhyolitic flow of uniform composition but textural heterogeneity. The imagery was recalibrated so that the digital number values for a lake in the scene matched a calculated ideal spectrum for water. TIMS spectra for the lava show useful differences in coarsely and finely vesicular pumice data, particularly in TIMS bands 3 and 4. Images generated by ratioing these bands accurately map out those areas known from field studies to be coarsely vesicular pumice. These texture-related emissivity variations are probably due to the larger vesicles being relatively deeper and separated by smaller septa leaving less smooth glass available to give the characteristic emission of the lava. In studies of inaccessible lava flows (as on Mars) areas of coarsely vesicular pumice must be identified and avoided before chemical variations can be interpreted. Remotely determined distributions of vesicular and glassy textures can also be related to the volatile contents and potential hazards associated with the emplacement of silicic lava flows on Earth.

Ambient Effects on Basalt and Rhyolite Lavas under Venusian, Subaerial, and Subaqueous Conditions

Both subaerial and subaqueous environments have been used as analog settings for Venus volcanism. To assess the merits of this, the effects of ambient conditions on the physical properties of lava on Venus, the seafloor, and land on Earth are evaluated. Rhyolites on Venus and on the surface of Earth solidify before basalts do because of their lower eruption temperatures. Rhyolite crust is thinner than basalt crust at times less than about an hour, especially on Venus. At later times, rhyolite crust is thicker because of its lower latent heat relative to basalt. The high pressure on the seafloor and Venus inhibits the exsolution of volatiles in lavas. Vesicularity and bulk density are proportional, so that lavas of the same composition should be more dense on the seafloor and less dense on land. Because viscosity depends partly upon the fraction of unvesiculated water in a melt, basalts with the same initial volatile abundance will be least viscous on the seafloor and most viscous on land. Assuming the same preeruptive H2O contents, molten rhyolites on Venus will have viscosities approx. 10% that of rhyolites on land. Despite lower expected viscosities, under-water flows are more buoyant and should have heights like subaerial and Venusian lavas of the same composition and extrusive history. In cases where the influence of crust is insignificant, a volume of rhyolite will have a higher aspect ratio than the same volume of basalt, no matter what the environment. If flow rheology is dominated by the presence of strong crust, aspect ratios differ little among environments or between compositions. These analyses support a rhyolitic interpretation for the composition of Venusian festooned flows and a basaltic interpretation for the composition of Venusian steep-sided domes. Although ambient effects are significant, extrusion rate and eruption history must also be considered to explain analogous volcanic landforms on Earth and Venus.

Utility of Lava Tubes on Other Worlds

On Mars, as on Earth, lava tubes are found in the extensive lava fields associated with shield volcanism. Lunar lava-tube traces are located near mare-highland boundaries, giving access to a variety of minerals and other resources, including steep slopes, prominent heights for local area communications and observation, large-surface areas in shade, and abundant basalt plains suitable for landing sites, mass-drivers, surface transportation, regolith harvesting, and other uses. Methods for detecting lava tubes include visual observations of collapse trenches and skylights, ground-penetrating radar, gravimetry, magnetometry, seismography, atmospheric effects, laser, lidar, infrared, and human or robotic exploration.

Rootless Cones on Mars: A Consequence of Lava-Ground Ice Interaction

Fields of small cratered cones on Mars are interpreted to have formed by rootless eruptions due to explosive interaction of lava with ground ice contained within the regolith beneath the flow. Melting and vaporization of the ice, and subsequent explosive expansion of the vapour, act to excavate the lava and construct a rootless cone around the explosion site. Similar features are found in Iceland, where flowing lava encountered water-saturated substrates. The martian cones have basal diameters of c. 30-1000 m and are located predominantly in the northern volcanic plains. High-resolution Mars Orbiter Camera images offer significant improvements over Viking data for interpretation of cone origins. A new model of the dynamics of cone formation indicates that very modest amounts of water ice are required to initiate and sustain the explosive interactions that produced the observed features. This is consistent with the likely low availability of water ice in the martian regolith. The scarcity of impact craters on many of the host lava flows indicates very young ages, suggesting that ground ice was present as recently as less than 10 - l00 Ma, and may persist today. Rootless cones therefore act as a spatial and temporal probe of the distribution of ground ice on Mars, which is of key significance in understanding the evolution of the martian climate. The location of water in liquid or solid form is of great importance to future robotic and human exploration strategies, and to the search for extraterrestrial life.

Application of THEMIS Data to an Investigation of a Long Lava Flow in the Tharsis Montes Region of Mars

The Tharsis region of Mars has long been known for the numerous lava flows radiating from the Tharsis Montes shield volcanoes. A 480-km-long flow southwest of Ascraeus Mons has been the subject of previous investigations using Viking and MGS data. The new data currently being obtained with the Thermal Emission Imaging System (THEMIS) on the Mars Odyssey spacecraft can shed new light on the volcanology of Martian lava flows, illustrated in this paper by two THEMIS images of the previously studied flow near Ascraeus Mons. The lava flow examined is on the western flank of the topographic saddle between the Ascraeus Mons and Pavonis Mons shield volcanoes. Flow morphology in the dust-covered Tharsis region is revealed in exquisite detail in daytime IR and VIS images from THEMIS, which will aid in documentation and analysis of lava flow features on Mars and improve constraints for volcanic modeling.

Lava Lakes on Io: New Perspectives from Modeling

Ionian paterae are a class of volcanic feature that are characterized by irregular craters with steep walls, flat floors, and arcuate margins that may or may not exhibit nesting. Loki (310 W, 12 N) is Io's largest patera at approx.200 km in diameter (Figure 1), and may account for 15% of Io's total heat flow. Earth-based infrared data, as well as information collected using the Galileo Near-Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (NIMS) and the Photopolarimeter Radiometer (PPR) have been used to interpret Loki s eruption style. Debate continues over whether Loki s occasional (periodic or not) temperature increases are due to an overturning lava lake within the patera, or to an eruption of surface flows on the patera floor. Interpretation of model results and comparisons with active terrestrial lava lakes suggest that Loki behaves quite differently from active lava lakes on Earth, and that surface flows (rather than an overturning lava lake) are a more likely explanation of Loki's thermal brightening.
