Using crosscorrelation techniques to determine the impulse response of linear systems

A crosscorrelation method of measuring the impulse response of linear systems is presented. The technique, implementation, and limitations of this method are discussed. A simple system is designed and built using discrete components and the impulse response of a linear circuit is measured. Theoretical and software simulation results are presented.

Predicting System Accidents with Model Analysis During Hybrid Simulation

Standard discrete event simulation is commonly used to identify system bottlenecks and starving and blocking conditions in resources and services. The CONFIG hybrid discrete/continuous simulation tool can simulate such conditions in combination with inputs external to the simulation. This provides a means for evaluating the vulnerability to system accidents of a system's design, operating procedures, and control software. System accidents are brought about by complex unexpected interactions among multiple system failures , faulty or misleading sensor data, and inappropriate responses of human operators or software. The flows of resource and product materials play a central role in the hazardous situations that may arise in fluid transport and processing systems. We describe the capabilities of CONFIG for simulation-time linear circuit analysis of fluid flows in the context of model-based hazard analysis. We focus on how CONFIG simulates the static stresses in systems of flow. Unlike other flow-related properties, static stresses (or static potentials) cannot be represented by a set of state equations. The distribution of static stresses is dependent on the specific history of operations performed on a system. We discuss the use of this type of information in hazard analysis of system designs.

Enhanced Low Dose Rate Sensitivity at Ultra-Low Dose Rates

We have presented results of ultra-low dose rate irradiations (< or = 10 mrad(Si)/s) for a variety of radiation hardened and commercial linear bipolar devices. We observed low dose rate enhancement factors exceeding 1.5 in several parts. The worst case of dose rate enhancement resulted in functional failures, which occurred after 10 and 60 krad(Si), for devices irradiated at 0.5 and 10 mrad(Si)/s, respectively. Devices fabricated with radiation hardened processes and designs also displayed dose rate enhancement at below 10 mrad(Si)/s. Furthermore, the data indicated that these devices have not reached the damage saturation point. Therefore the degradation will likely continue to increase with increasing total dose, and the low dose rate enhancement will further magnify. The cases presented here, in addition to previous examples, illustrate the significance and pervasiveness of low dose rate enhancement at dose rates lower than 10 mrad(Si). These results present further challenges for radiation hardness assurance of bipolar linear circuits, and raise the question of whether the current standard test dose rate is conservative enough to bound degradations due to ELDRS.

A Two-Dimensional Non-Linear Magnetic Equivalent Circuit Model to Facilitate the Preliminary Design of a Normal Conducting Quadrupole

Normal conducting quadrupoles have been used to focus charged particle beams in synchrotrons, beam transfer lines, medical linacs, etc. for a long time. Optimization techniques based on analytical expressions combined with the use of a numerical field analysis tool exist in the literature for the design of an optimal pole tip shape. However, the initial shape and dimensions of the remaining yoke (including the pole itself and yoke base that act as the return path) are usually less well defined. This article discusses a design methodology for a normal conducting quadrupole based on a two-dimensional magnetic equivalent circuit. Here, this approach considers the geometry of the entire magnet and the non-linear behavior of the yoke material, thereby eliminating the initial iterations. The design outcome of this exercise serves as a competent starting point and can then be used to refine the pole tip, pole taper, yoke size, and add other geometrical features to achieve the required field quality, gradient, coil considerations, etc. by employing a finite element analysis tool. An example design study to demonstrate the proposed methodology is presented.

Arc-Tangent Circuit for Continuous Linear Output

A device suitable for determining arc-tangent of an angle θ is provided. Circuitry generates a first square wave at a frequency ωt and a second square wave at the frequency ωt but shifted by a phase difference equal to the angle θ. A pulse width modulation signal generator processes the first and second square waves to generate a pulse width modulation signal having a frequency of rot and having a pulse width that is a function of the phase difference θ. The pulse width modulation signal is converted to a DC voltage that is a linear representation of the phase difference θ.

Simple circuit provides adjustable voltage with linear temperature variation

A bridge circuit giving an adjustable output voltage that varies linearly with temperature is formed with temperature compensating diodes in one leg. A resistor voltage divider adjusts to temperature range across the bridge. The circuit is satisfactory over the temperature range of minus 20 degrees centigrade to plus 80 degrees centigrade.

General purpose computer programs for numerically analyzing linear ac electrical and electronic circuits for steady-state conditions

Digital computer programs determine steady-state performance characteristics of active and passive linear circuits. The ac analysis program solves the basic circuit parameters. The compiler program solves these circuit parameters and in addition provides a more versatile program by allowing the user to perform mathematical and logical operations.

Circuit model for characterizing the nearly linear behavior of avalanche diodes in amplifier circuits

A nonlinear circuit model for avalanche diodes is proposed. The model was derived by assuming that the bias dependence of the elements in a known small-signal equivalent-circuit model for existing diodes arises in a manner consistent with the theory of an idealized Read-type device. The model contains a nonlinear R-L branch, a controlled source, and a linear depletion capacitance. The model is used in the nearly linear sense to predict intermodulation distortion and gain compression in avalanche diode amplifiers. Computed results for amplifiers with existing diodes are shown to be in good agreement with experiment.

Beyond real: alternative unitary cluster Jastrow models for molecular electronic structure calculations on near-term quantum computers

Near-term quantum devices require wavefunction ansätze that are expressive while also of shallow circuit depth in order to both accurately and efficiently simulate molecular electronic structure. While the unitary coupled cluster ansatz (e.g., UCCSD) has become a standard, the high gate count associated with the implementation of this limits its feasibility on noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) hardware. k -Fold unitary cluster Jastrow (uCJ) ansätze mitigate this challenge by providing O( kN 2 ) circuit scaling and favorable linear depth circuit implementation. Previous work has focused on the real orbitalrotation (Re-uCJ) variant of uCJ, which allows an exact (Trotter-free) implementation. Here we extend and generalize the k -fold uCJ framework by introducing two new variants, Im-uCJ and g-uCJ, which incorporate imaginary and fully complex orbital rotation operators, respectively. Similar to Re-uCJ, both of the new variants achieve quadratic gate-count scaling. Our results focus on the simplest k = 1 model, and show that the uCJ models frequently maintain energy errors within chemical accuracy (∼1 kcal mol −1 ). Both g-uCJ and Im-uCJ are more expressive in terms of capturing electron correlation and are also more accurate than the earlier Re-uCJ ansatz. We further show that Im-uCJ and g-uCJ circuits can also be implemented exactly, without any Trotter decomposition. Numerical tests using k = 1 on H 2 , H 3 + , Be 2 , C 2 H 4 , C 2 H 6 and C 6 H 6 in various basis sets confirm the practical feasibility of these shallow Jastrow-based ansätze for applications on near-term quantum hardware.
