Phase-lock-loop application for fiber optic receiver

Phase-locked loop circuits are frequently employed in communication systems. In recent years, digital phase-locked loop circuits were utilized in optical communications systems. In an optical transceiver system, the digital phase-locked loop circuit is connected to the output of the receiver to extract a clock signal from the received coded data (NRZ, Bi-Phase, or Manchester). The clock signal is then used to reconstruct or recover the original data from the coded data. A theoretical approach to the design of a digital phase-locked loop circuit operation at 1 and 50 MHz is described. Hardware implementation of a breadboard design to function at 1 MHz and a printed-circuit board designed to function at 50 MHz were assembled using emitter coupled logic (ECL) to verify experimentally the theoretical design.

An analysis of the Hubble Space Telescope fine guidance sensor fine lock mode

There are two guiding modes of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) used for the acquisition of astronomical data by one of its six scientific instruments. The more precise one is called Fine Lock. Command and control problems in the onboard electronics has limited Fine Lock to brighter stars, V less than 13.0 mag, instead of fulfilling its goal of V = 14.5 mag. Consequently, the less precise guiding mode of Coarse Track (approximately 40 milli-arc seconds) has to be used fairly frequently. Indeed, almost half of the scientific observations to have been made with the HST will be compromised. The only realistic or extensive simulations of the Fine Lock guidance mode are reported. The theoretical analysis underlying the Monte Carlo experiments and the numerical computations clearly show both that the control electronics are severely under-engineered and how to adjust the various control parameters to successfully extend Fine Lock guiding performance back to V = 14.0 mag and sometimes beyond.

Theoretical model for frequency locking a diode laser with a Faraday cell

A new method was developed for frequency locking a diode lasers, called 'the Faraday anomalous dispersion optical transmitter (FADOT) laser locking', which is much simpler than other known locking schemes. The FADOT laser locking method uses commercial laser diodes with no antireflection coatings, an atomic Faraday cell with a single polarizer, and an output coupler to form a compound cavity. The FADOT method is vibration insensitive and exhibits minimal thermal expansion effects. The system has a frequency pull in the range of 443.2 GHz (9 A). The method has potential applications in optical communication, remote sensing, and pumping laser excited optical filters.

Radio frequency interference effect on PN code sequence lock detector

The authors find the probabilities of detection and false alarm of the pseudonoise (PN) sequence code lock detector when strong radio frequency interference (RFI) hits the communications link. Both a linear model and a soft-limiter nonlinear model for a transponder receiver are considered. In addition, both continuous wave (CW) RFI and pulse RFI are analyzed, and a discussion is included of how strong CW RFI can knock out the PN code lock detector in a linear or a soft-limiter transponder. As an example, the Space Station Freedom forward S-band PN system is evaluated. It is shown that a soft-limiter transponder can protect the PN code lock detector against a typical pulse RFI, but it can degrade the PN code lock detector performance more than a linear transponder if CW RFI hits the link.

Suppressing Transients In Digital Phase-Locked Loops

Loop of arbitrary order starts in steady-state lock. Method for initializing variables of digital phase-locked loop reduces or eliminates transients in phase and frequency typically occurring during acquisition of lock on signal or when changes made in values of loop-filter parameters called "loop constants". Enables direct acquisition by third-order loop without prior acquisition by second-order loop of greater bandwidth, and eliminates those perturbations in phase and frequency lock occurring when loop constants changed by arbitrarily large amounts.

Self-mode-locked chromium-doped forsterite laser generates 50-fs pulses

Stable transform-limited (delta nu-delta tau = 0.32) femtosecond pulses with a FWHM of 50 fs were generated from a self-mode-locked chromium-doped forsterite laser. The forsterite laser was synchronously pumped by a CW mode-locked Nd:YAG (82 MHz) laser that generated picosecond pulses (200-300 ps) and provided the starting mechanism for self-mode-locked operation. Maximum output power was 45 mW for 3.9 W of absorbed pumped power with the use of an output coupler with 1 percent transmission. The self-mode-locked forsterite laser was tuned from 1240 to 1270 nm.

Frequency and Phase-lock Control of a 3 THz Quantum Cascade Laser

We have locked the frequency of a 3 THz quantum cascade laser (QCL) to that of a far-infrared gas laser with a tunable microwave offset frequency. The locked QCL line shape is essentially Gaussian, with linewidths of 65 and 141 kHz at the -3 and -10 dB levels, respectively. The lock condition can be maintained indefinitely, without requiring temperature or bias current regulation of the QCL other than that provided by the lock error signal. The result demonstrates that a terahertz QCL can be frequency controlled with l-part-in-lO(exp 8) accuracy, which is a factor of 100 better than that needed for a local oscillator in a heterodyne receiver for atmospheric and astronomic spectroscopy.

Frequency-Tunable Pre-stabilized lasers for LISA via Stabilized Lasers for LISA via Sideband Locking

This viewgraph presentation discusses a major potential source of noise for the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) that is the laser frequency noise and the proposed mechanism to suppress the unstabilized frequency fluctuations. These fluctuations must be suppresed by about 12 orders of magnitude to achieve a stability that is sufficient for the detection of gravitational waves. This presentation reviews present a modification to the traditional cavity locking technique that allows the laser to be locked to a cavity resonance with an adjustable frequency offset. This presentation also discusses measurements of the system stability, demonstrating that the pre-stabilization level satisfies LISA requirements and a demonstration of a phase-lock loop which utilizes the tunable sideband locking technique as a pre-stabilization stage.

Time Domain Simulations of Arm Locking in LISA

Arm locking is a technique that has been proposed for reducing laser frequency fluctuations in the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA). a gravitational-wave observatory sensitive' in the milliHertz frequency band. Arm locking takes advantage of the geometric stability of the triangular constellation of three spacecraft that comprise LISA to provide a frequency reference with a stability in the LISA measurement band that exceeds that available from a standard reference such as an optical cavity or molecular absorption line. We have implemented a time-domain simulation of arm locking including the expected limiting noise sources (shot noise, clock noise. spacecraft jitter noise. and residual laser frequency noise). The effect of imperfect a priori knowledge of the LISA heterodyne frequencies and associated "pulling" of an arm locked laser is included. We find that our implementation meets requirements both on the noise and dynamic range of the laser frequency.

Harmonic and Subharmonic RF Injection Locking of THz Metasurface Quantum-Cascade VECSEL

Harmonic and subharmonic RF injection locking is demonstrated in a terahertz (THz) quantum-cascade vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting laser (QC-VECSEL). By tuning the RF injection frequency around integer multiples and submultiples of the cavity round-trip frequency, different harmonic and subharmonic orders can be excited in the same device. Modulation-dependent behavior of the device has been studied with recorded lasing spectral broadening and locking bandwidths in each case. In particular, harmonic injection locking results in the observation of harmonic spectra with bandwidths over 200 GHz. A semiclassical Maxwell-density matrix formalism has been applied to interpret QC-VECSEL dynamics, which aligns well with experimental observations.

Fundamental Noise-Limited Optical Phase Locking at Femtowatt Light Levels

We describe an optical phase lock loop (PLL) designed to recover an optical carrier at powers below one picowatt in a Deep Space optical transponder. Previous low power optical phase lock has been reported with powers down to about 1 pW. We report the demonstration and characterization of the optical phase locking at femtowatt levels. We achieved a phase slip rate below one cycle-slip/second at powers down to 60 femtowatts. This phase slip rate corresponds to a frequency stability of 1 10(exp -14) at 1 s, a value better than any frequency standard available today for measuring times equal to a typical two-way delay between Earth and Mars. The PLL shows very robust stability at these power levels. We developed simulation software to optimize parameters of the second order PLL loop in the presence of laser flicker frequency noise and white phase (photon) noise, and verified the software with a white phase noise model by Viterbi. We also demonstrated precise Doppler tracking at femtowatt levels.

Directional locking and hysteresis in stripe- and bubble-forming systems on one-dimensional periodic substrates with a rotating drive

We examine the dynamics of a two-dimensional stripe, bubble, and crystal forming system interacting with a periodic one-dimensional substrate under an applied drive that is rotated with respect to the substrate periodicity direction 𝑥. We find that the stripes remain strongly directionally locked to the 𝑥 direction for an extended range of drives before undergoing motion parallel to the drive. In some cases, the stripes break apart at the unlocking transition, but they can dynamically reform into stripes aligned perpendicular to the 𝑥 direction, producing hysteresis in the directional locking and unlocking transitions. In contrast, moving anisotropic crystal and bubble phases exhibit weaker directional locking and reduced or no hysteresis. The hysteresis occurs in regimes where the particle rearrangements occur and is most pronounced near the stripe phase. In conclusion, we also show that for varied substrate strength, substrate spacing, and particle density, a number of novel dynamical patterns can form that include a combination of stripe, bubble, and crystal morphologies.

Injection locking in IMPATT diode oscillators.

A model for an injection-locked IMPATT diode oscillator is presented and used to calculate the locking behavior of the oscillator at different operating points. The model is compared with earlier theories of injection locking in IMPATT diode oscillators and the calculated results are compared with experimental observations.

A class of all digital phase locked loops - Modelling and analysis.

An all digital phase locked loop which tracks the phase of the incoming signal once per carrier cycle is proposed. The different elements and their functions, and the phase lock operation are explained in detail. The general digital loop operation is governed by a non-linear difference equation from which a suitable model is developed. The lock range for the general model is derived. The performance of the digital loop for phase step, and frequency step inputs for different levels of quantization without loop filter, are studied. The analytical results are checked by simulating the actual system on the digital computer.

Orientation and resonance locks for satellites in the elliptic orbit.

In order to achieve the maximum strength of higher resonance locks for satellites in the elliptic orbit, the condition of satellite orientation during the process of deployment is established. It is shown that for maximum strength locks the axis of the minimum moment of inertia of satellites should point toward the attracting body at plus or minus (5/8) pi and 0 values of the true anomaly f. This condition of deployment is applicable to all cases of resonance rotation regardless of the value of lock number k and orbit eccentricity e.

Binary phase locked loops for Omega receivers

An all-digital phase lock loop (PLL) is considered because of a number of problems inherent in an employment of analog PLL. The digital PLL design presented solves these problems. A single loop measures all eight Omega time slots. Memory-aiding leads to the name of this design, the memory-aided phase lock loop (MAPLL). Basic operating principles are discussed and the superiority of MAPLL over the conventional digital phase lock loop with regard to the operational efficiency for Omega applications is demonstrated.
