Investigation of Timing Properties for an Event Driven with Access and Reset Decoder Readout Architecture for a Pixel Array

The large number of data generating sources (data channels) on a single chip requires appropriate techniques to manage a readout from these channels. One of the main methods is sharing a medium of transmission, which requires arbitration to avoid collisions or deadlocks. Existing solutions face several problems such as a dead time, unintended prioritization or metastability. That is why we decided to create a new readout architecture named EDWARD i.e., Event Driven with Access and Reset Decoder. The EDWARD architecture gets rid of the earlier mentioned problems and mitigates the other ones. However, due to the use of logic circuits outside a standard cell library, which are hard to characterize, we were challenged to perform an additional transient analysis to validate the architecture. Here we show a methodology and the results of the simulations. Based on the results obtained we can confirm the functional correctness of the system and plan the optimization of operating conditions in order to achieve better performance. Our goal is to use the EDWARD architecture in the future radiation detectors to be built at Brookhaven National Laboratory.

SPADES (Scalable Parallel Discrete Events Simulation) [SWR-24-99]

SPADES (Solver for PArallel Discrete Event Simulation) is an open-source parallel discrete event simulation (PDES) package built on the AMReX library. Targeted at solving discrete event systems in parallel, this software package aims to be performance portable and scalable on heterogeneous computing architectures, e.g., graphic processing units (GPU). SPADES implements optimistic synchronization with rollback through an implementation of the Time Warp algorithm. An alternative conservative synchronization approach is also implemented using the Lower Bound on Incoming Time Stamp. In our implementation, logical processes are represented as cells in a grid and event messages are represented as particles. SPADES supports various parallel decomposition strategies, including the use of the Message Passing Interface (MPI) and OpenMP threading. All major GPU architectures (e.g., Intel, AMD, NVIDIA) are supported through the use of performance portability functionalities implemented in AMReX. The SPADES software is released in NREL Software Record SWR-24-99 “SPADES (Scalable Parallel Discrete Events Simulation)”.

Laboratory studies of electrical properties of insulating materials

The characteristics of satellites are influenced by the electrical properties of the dielectric exterior. It was found in simulated space environment tests that the electrical conductivities of dielectrics are affected as the result of interactions with various components of the environment. The degree to which the conductivity was affected varied with material. In some instances the changes found to occur could be used to advantage, particularly if they could be enhanced. For example, the increased electrical conductivity of Kapton resulting from solar illumination could be used to advantage to eliminate the charge storage leading to electrical breakdown during magnetic substorms. Similarly the relative immunity of FEP Teflon to change from response to the space environment makes it a logical choice as a solar cell cover in a high-voltage solar array.

Cell Libraries

A NASA contract led to the development of faster and more energy efficient semiconductor materials for digital integrated circuits. Gallium arsenide (GaAs) conducts electrons 4-6 times faster than silicon and uses less power at frequencies above 100-150 megahertz. However, the material is expensive, brittle, fragile and has lacked computer automated engineering tools to solve this problem. Systems & Processes Engineering Corporation (SPEC) developed a series of GaAs cell libraries for cell layout, design rule checking, logic synthesis, placement and routing, simulation and chip assembly. The system is marketed by Compare Design Automation.

How to see hidden patterns in metamaterials with interpretable machine learning

Machine learning models can assist with metamaterials design by approximating computationally expensive simulators or solving inverse design problems. However, past work has usually relied on black box deep neural networks, whose reasoning processes are opaque and require enormous datasets that are expensive to obtain. Here, in this work, we develop two novel machine learning approaches to metamaterials discovery that have neither of these disadvantages. These approaches, called shape-frequency features and unit-cell templates, can discover 2D metamaterials with user-specified frequency band gaps. Our approaches provide logical rule-based conditions on metamaterial unit-cells that allow for interpretable reasoning processes, and generalize well across design spaces of different resolutions. The templates also provide design flexibility where users can almost freely design the fine resolution features of a unit-cell without affecting the user’s desired band gap.

Vacuum MOCVD fabrication of high efficience cells

Vacuum metal-organic-chemical-vapor-deposition (MOCVD) is a new fabrication process with improved safety and easier scalability due to its metal rather than glass construction and its uniform multiport gas injection system. It uses source materials more efficiently than other methods because the vacuum molecular flow conditions allow the high sticking coefficient reactants to reach the substrates as undeflected molecular beams and the hot chamber walls cause the low sticking coefficient reactants to bounce off the walls and interact with the substrates many times. This high source utilization reduces the materials costs power device and substantially decreases the amounts of toxic materials that must be handled as process effluents. The molecular beams allow precise growth control. With improved source purifications, vacuum MOCVD has provided p GaAs layers with 10-micron minority carrier diffusion lengths and GaAs and GaAsSb solar cells with 20% AMO efficiencies at 59X and 99X sunlight concentration ratios. Mechanical stacking has been identified as the quickest, most direct and logical path to stacked multiple-junction solar cells that perform better than the best single-junction devices. The mechanical stack is configured for immediate use in solar arrays and allows interconnections that improve the system end-of-life performance in space.

A conserved molecular logic for neurogenesis to gliogenesis switch in the cerebral cortex

During development, neural stem cells in the cerebral cortex, also known as radial glial cells (RGCs), generate excitatory neurons, followed by production of cortical macroglia and inhibitory neurons that migrate to the olfactory bulb (OB). Understanding the mechanisms for this lineage switch is fundamental for unraveling how proper numbers of diverse neuronal and glial cell types are controlled. We and others recently showed that Sonic Hedgehog (Shh) signaling promotes the cortical RGC lineage switch to generate cortical oligodendrocytes and OB interneurons. During this process, cortical RGCs generate intermediate progenitor cells that express critical gliogenesis genes Ascl1, Egfr, and Olig2. The increased Ascl1 expression and appearance of Egfr + and Olig2 + cortical progenitors are concurrent with the switch from excitatory neurogenesis to gliogenesis and OB interneuron neurogenesis in the cortex. While Shh signaling promotes Olig2 expression in the developing spinal cord, the exact mechanism for this transcriptional regulation is not known. Furthermore, the transcriptional regulation of Olig2 and Egfr has not been explored. Here, we show that in cortical progenitor cells, multiple regulatory programs, including Pax6 and Gli3, prevent precocious expression of Olig2, a gene essential for production of cortical oligodendrocytes and astrocytes. We identify multiple enhancers that control Olig2 expression in cortical progenitors and show that the mechanisms for regulating Olig2 expression are conserved between the mouse and human. Our study reveals evolutionarily conserved regulatory logic controlling the lineage switch of cortical neural stem cells.

An area model for on-chip memories and its application

An area model suitable for comparing data buffers of different organizations and arbitrary sizes is described. The area model considers the supplied bandwidth of a memory cell and includes such buffer overhead as control logic, driver logic, and tag storage. The model gave less than 10 percent error when verified against real caches and register files. It is shown that, comparing caches and register files in terms of area for the same storage capacity, caches generally occupy more area per bit than register files for small caches because the overhead dominates the cache area at these sizes. For larger caches, the smaller storage cells in the cache provide a smaller total cache area per bit than the register set. Studying cache performance (traffic ratio) as a function of area, it is shown that, for small caches, direct-mapped caches perform significantly better than four-way set-associative caches and, for caches of medium areas, both direct-mapped and set-associative caches perform better than fully associative caches.

Multi-port, optically addressed RAM

A random access memory addressing system utilizing optical links between memory and the read/write logic circuits comprises addressing circuits including a plurality of light signal sources, a plurality of optical gates including optical detectors associated with the memory cells, and a holographic optical element adapted to reflect and direct the light signals to the desired memory cell locations. More particularly, it is a multi-port, binary computer memory for interfacing with a plurality of computers. There are a plurality of storage cells for containing bits of binary information, the storage cells being disposed at the intersections of a plurality of row conductors and a plurality of column conductors. There is interfacing logic for receiving information from the computers directing access to ones of the storage cells. There are first light sources associated with the interfacing logic for transmitting a first light beam with the access information modulated thereon. First light detectors are associated with the storage cells for receiving the first light beam, for generating an electrical signal containing the access information, and for conducting the electrical signal to the one of the storage cells to which it is directed. There are holographic optical elements for reflecting the first light beam from the first light sources to the first light detectors.

A Genetic Representation for Evolutionary Fault Recovery in Virtex FPGAs

Most evolutionary approaches to fault recovery in FPGAs focus on evolving alternative logic configurations as opposed to evolving the intra-cell routing. Since the majority of transistors in a typical FPGA are dedicated to interconnect, nearly 80% according to one estimate, evolutionary fault-recovery systems should benefit hy accommodating routing. In this paper, we propose an evolutionary fault-recovery system employing a genetic representation that takes into account both logic and routing configurations. Experiments were run using a software model of the Xilinx Virtex FPGA. We report that using four Virtex combinational logic blocks, we were able to evolve a 100% accurate quadrature decoder finite state machine in the presence of a stuck-at-zero fault.

New Techniques for Thermo-electrochemical Analysis of Lithium-ion Batteries for Space Applications

The overall goal of this study was achieved: Replicated the numerical assessment performed by Chen et. al. (2005). Displayed the ability of Thermal Desktop to be coupled with thermo-electrochemical analysis techniques. such that the local heat generated on the cells is a function of the model itself using logic blocks and arrays. Differences in the TD temperature vs. depth of discharge profiles and Chen's was most likely due to differences in two primary areas: Contact regions and conductance values. Differences in density and specific heat values. center dot The model results are highly dependent on the accuracy of the material properties with respect to the multiple layers of an individual cell.
