FY2024 Q4 L2 Milestone 8237 for Opacity-on-NIF

This document addresses parts 2 and 3 of the original milestone request. In the following writeup, the development of OpSpecTR at LLNL by LLNL and NNSS personnel will be detailed first, followed by a write-up of the development of Vme-resolved simulaVons of the opacity-on-NIF experiment. Capsule backlight simulaVons, hohlraum simulaVons, and sample simulaVons from CASSIO are combined to produce the line of sight from the capsule to an effecVve OpSpec posiVon. Spectra are generated by post-processing these simulaVons from either Spect3D, a commercial software by Prism ComputaVonal Sciences, or FESTR (Finite Element Spectroscopic Transport of RadiaVon), a LANL code. While the simulaVons do not at this stage proceed late enough to include the worst of the backgrounds generated from the hohlraum experimentally and each post-processing simulaVon includes only one ray for each spectrometer channel, these efforts represent proof of concept for a new capability to complete Vme-resolved and Vmegated simulaVons for the complete line of sight of the complex opacity-on-NIF geometry. Future work will be discussed at the end of the report for both efforts.

Milestone 2.7: Evaluation of Techniques for the Measurement of Molecular Hydrogen Gas in Helium Matrices

Published data by Task 2 (Oxyhydroxide Layer Radiolytic Gas Generation Resolution) for Technical Considerations and Challenges for Extended (>50 yrs) Dry Storage of Aluminum Cladded Spent Nuclear Fuel (ASNF), demonstrated that radiolytic molecular hydrogen (H2) production from gamma irradiated aluminum alloy 1100 (Al-1100) coupons exhibited significant dependence on backfill gaseous environment conditions: air, due to the presence of oxygen, completely inhibited H2 production; nitrogen promoted H2 production; and argon yielded more H2 than nitrogen environments. The concern here is that helium has been proposed as the backfill gas for extended storage and is more inert than argon, which may translate into significantly more H2 production than current Task 3 argon-based models predict. However, the measurement of H2 in helium media was not possible using the previously establish gas chromatography (GC) flame ionization detector, due to similarities in thermal conductivity. This milestone was initiated to evaluate an alternative GC approach that employed a mercuric oxide (HgO) reduction gas detector (RGD). Using the HgO RGD setup, H2 was successfully calibrated in the presence of a helium carrier gas, and then subsequently measured in control and irradiated crush-tube sample vials, consistent with previous sample measurements. Overall, the HgO RGD approach was found to be sufficient for future helium environment irradiations.

Milestone in predicting core plasma turbulence: successful multi-channel validation of the gyrokinetic code GENE

On the basis of several recent breakthroughs in fusion research, many activities have been launched around the world to develop fusion power plants on the fastest possible time scale. In this context, high-fidelity simulations of the plasma behavior on large supercomputers provide one of the main pathways to accelerating progress by guiding crucial design decisions. When it comes to determining the energy confinement time of a magnetic confinement fusion device, which is a key quantity of interest, gyrokinetic turbulence simulations are considered the approach of choice – but the question, whether they are really able to reliably predict the plasma behavior is still open. The present study addresses this important issue by means of careful comparisons between state-of-the-art gyrokinetic turbulence simulations with the GENE code and experimental observations in the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak for an unprecedented number of simultaneous plasma observables.

Data sharing helps avoid “smoking gun” claims of topological milestones

Manipulating the topology of electronic bands can realize new states of matter, with possible implications for information technology. A central question is how to tell whether a topological regime has been achieved. Experiments are often guided by a prediction of a distinct and self-explanatory signal called “the smoking gun.” However, in micrometer- or nanometer-scale specimens, phenomenology can mimic the anticipated behavior without containing the exotic states. We show limited data that are consistent with the presence of four topological phenomena; by considering additional data, we identified the most likely origins of the observed patterns as trivial. Finally, we argue that the reliability of smoking gun–type claims can be greatly enhanced by releasing comprehensive datasets, discussing alternative scenarios, and disclosing the total volume of study.

STDA05-51 milestone

In the case for each of the tasks, implementation started in a private topic branch. That branch was later submitted as a merge request where the code was run through regression tests across multiple test platforms. The merge requests were also subjected to human reviewers for approval. After necessary modifications were made, the code was merged to VTK-m's master branch. Subsequently, documentation was written for the VTK-m User's Guide.

BEE - FY20 P6-3: Release BEEWorkflowManager, BEETaskManager, and client application 2.3.6.01 – LANL ATDM ST / STNS01-4 P6 Milestone Completion Documentation

Release BEEWorkflowManager, BEETaskManager, and client software. The BEEWorkflowManager daemon runs on the HPC cluster login node. It accepts workflows submitted by the BEE client. These workflows are specified using the Common Workflow Language (CWL) standard. The BEEWorkflowManager loads workflows into the Neo4j graph database to create the workflow directed acyclic graph (DAG), and submits the workflow tasks to the BEETaskManager for execution. The BEEWorkflowManager records the state of the workflow and its tasks, and communicates this state to the BEE client. The BEEWorkflowManager will start, pause, and cancel a running workflow and its tasks at the command of the BEE client. The BEETaskManager daemon runs on the HPC cluster login node. It accepts tasks from the BEEWorkflowManager, turns those tasks into HPC resource manager jobs (e.g. a slurm job script), and submits the job to the cluster resource manager. The BEETaskManager then tracks the status of the job (pending, running, complete) and updates the BEEWorkflowManager. The BEETaskManager will also cancel a queued or running job when commanded to do so by the BEEWorkflowManager. The first release of the BEETaskManager will support the Slurm resource manager and the Charliecloud linux container runtime.

Quantitative Performance Assessment of Proxy Apps and Parents (ECP Proxy App Project Milestone ADCD-504-9)

This report presents highlights of these efforts. Section 2 describes work that has been done to compare the performance of proxy applications on AMD MI60 vs. Nvidia V100 GPUs. So far only a small set of ECP proxies are running on AMD GPUs, but we will continue to expand this analysis as additional proxies become available. We find that although the MI60 and V100 have nearly the same measured memory bandwidth, memory bound proxy app kernels perform 20-30% worse on the MI60. Further work is needed to refine these comparisons to determine whether the root cause is due to differences in the hardware, software stack, platform specific optimization, or some combination of the three. Section 3 describes our continuing effort to find methods to accurately assess the similarity of proxies and parents. We have recently seen very encouraging results using a cosine similarity metric. This technique uses the angle between two vectors of hardware performance counters to characterize the similarity (or difference) between two applications or proxies. We show not only that several widely used proxies are highly similar to their parents, but also that they differ from non-related codes. We also show that cosine similarity can be used to identify gaps and redundancies in suites and even to gain insight into the effects of architectural differences between platforms. Our work on assessing the Exascale toolchain is ongoing. Our successes with performance measurement tools are evident from the data provided in this report. However, our assessments across the broader tool chain are still too incomplete to provide a meaningful report at this time. We will continue to assess tools and work with vendors and third party developers as issues are identified.
