Toward particle accelerator machine state embeddings as a modality for large language models

Understanding and diagnosing the state of a particle accelerator requires navigating high-dimensional control system data, often involving hundreds of interdependent parameters. We propose a novel multimodal embedding framework that jointly learns representations of machine states from both numerical control system readouts and natural language descriptions. This enables the translation of complex machine conditions into human-readable summaries while maintaining fidelity to the underlying physical system. The obtained embeddings are subsequently adapted to an open-weights large language model via cross-attention conditioning. We demonstrate a first implementation trained on European XFEL machine state data. This work covers the embedding model architecture, training methodology, and presents initial examples demonstrating the model's capabilities in action. Due to the general concept of machine state, the model can be easily adapted to other facilities and control system environments.

The VIBES Are Shifting: Assessing Emergent Capabilities in Multi-Modal Models

Researchers assessing open-source domains such as the internet, and particularly those studying information conflict, often have no single prescribed workflow. In the course of their research, they may need to perform a diverse array of tasks far beyond simply identifying an ever-changing set of objects. These analytical tasks can include ascertaining the provenance of images, understand an image in the context of accompanying text-based data, or identifying indicators of digital image manipulation. They must further be able to do this at the scale of tens of thousands of images or more. Traditional machine vision models have typically lacked the flexibility and breadth of performance sufficient for these needs. The research team from Pacific Northwest National Laboratory assessed the performance of a single baseline CLIP ViT-L model against a series of analytical tasks relevant for the study of online information conflict.

Robust Explanations using Diverse Adversarially Trained Ensembles, Multi-Modal Contrastive Learning, and Attribution-based Confidence Metrics

The primary objective of this project is to strengthen the trustworthiness of AI systems by designing algorithms that make their internal decision-making processes more understandable to human users. This involves creating clear, interpretable explanations for AI decisions and developing metrics to assess these explanations' validity and reliability. Significant progress has been achieved through (i) developing symbolic explanations, (ii) generating meaningful interpretive insights, (iii) establishing accuracy and confidence metrics, and (iv) devising methods to evaluate the knowledge boundaries of AI models. To date, the research findings have been shared in peer-reviewed publications, with accompanying scientific and technical information (STI) detailed below.

Vulcan-Forge: Architecture and Design of a Multi-Modal Forensic Analysis Plugin for CALDERA

Forge and VULCAN together describe an open-architecture cybersecurity analysis ecosystem that unifies forensic artifact processing, detection engineering, and vulnerability intelligence within integrated platforms. Forge operates as a plugin for MITRE CALDERA, ingesting diverse evidence formats—including EVTX, PCAP/PCAPNG, CSV, JSON, YAML, XML, binaries, and archives—to construct a unified artifact graph enriched with severity scoring, TLP classification, and audit trails. It provides subsystems for artifact parsing, streaming structured-data visualization, NetworkMiner-based packet inspection, PE/.NET binary analysis, and LLM-assisted triage and rule generation, with outputs validated against CCCS-YARA and pySigma schemas. VULCAN complements this by serving as a cybersecurity analyst platform that integrates a Neo4j knowledge graph, Qdrant vector retrieval, SSVC-based triage, and a local LLM to deliver CVE intelligence and forensic analysis through a multi-source ingest pipeline drawing from NVD, CISA KEV, EPSS, MITRE ATT&CK, and CAPEC. Together, they bridge structured threat intelligence with automated forensic analysis and detection workflows.
