Modeling from Local to Subsystem Level Effects in Analog and Digital Circuits Due to Space Induced Single Event Transients

Single Event Transients in analog and digital electronics from space generated high energetic nuclear particles can disrupt either temporarily and sometimes permanently the functionality and performance of electronics in space vehicles. This work first provides some insights into the modeling of SET in electronic circuits that can be used in SPICE-like simulators. The work is then directed to present methodologies, one of which was developed by this author, for the assessment of SET at different levels of integration in electronics, from the circuit level to the subsystem level.

Many-particle theory of nuclear systems with application to neutron star matter

The research is reported concerning energy-density relation for the normal state of neutron star matter, and the effects of superfluidity and polarization on neutron star matter. Considering constraints on variation, and the theory of quantum fluids, three methods for calculating the energy-density range are presented. The effects of polarization on neutron star structure, and polarization effects on condensation and superfluid-state energy are discussed.

Many-particle theory of nuclear systems with application to neutron star matter

The energy-density relation was calculated for pure neutron matter in the density range relevant for neutron stars, using four different hard-core potentials. Calculations are also presented of the properties of the superfluid state of the neutron component, along with the superconducting state of the proton component and the effects of polarization in neutron star matter.

Nuclear gamma rays from energetic particle interactions

Gamma ray line emission from nuclear deexcitation following energetic particle reactions is evaluated. The compiled nuclear data and the calculated gamma ray spectra and intensities can be used for the study of astrophysical sites which contain large fluxes of energetic protons and nuclei. A detailed evaluation of gamma ray line production in the interstellar medium is made.

Assessment of Coated Particle Fuels for Space Nuclear Power and Propulsion Systems: A Report for the NESC Nuclear Power & Propulsion Technical Discipline Team

This study evaluates terrestrial reactor fuel forms, with an emphasis on the coated particle fuel capability under development by interagency reactor programs, for application to space reactor systems of interest to NASA. A comprehensive review of coated particle fuel readiness and qualification status has been performed. Possible derivative fuel forms based on coated particle fuel manufacture technologies are identified and assessed for fission surface power, nuclear electric propulsion, and nuclear thermal propulsion systems. Assessments for terrestrial coated particle and historic fuels were compared for each system allowing for relative risk and common fuel qualification needs to be identified.

A study of the interaction of neutral and charged particles

Preliminary experimental data on the number of charged neutral nuclear-active particles were obtained at 200 BeV. The ratio of the number of charged particles to the number of neutral particles was 2.1 + or - 0.3. Nuclear cascade curves in iron and distributions over the portions of energy transferred to neutral pions in lead were obtained for avalanches generated by charged and neutral particles. The characteristics of interactions of the charged neutral particles at the existing experimental errors showed no difference.

Measurements of hadron mean free path for the particle-producing collisions in nuclear matter

It is not obvious a priority that the cross-section for a process in hadron collisions with free nucleons is the same as that for the process in hadron collisions with nucleons inside a target nucleus. The question arises: what is the cross-section for a process in a hadron collision with nucleon on inside the atomic nucleus. The answer to it must be found in experiments. The mean free path for particle-producing collisions of pions in nuclear matter is determined experimentally using pion-xenon nucleus collisions at 3.5 GeV/c momentum. Relation between the mean free path in question lambda sub in nucleons fm squared and the cross-section in units of fm squared/nucleon for collisions of the hadron with free nucleon is: lambda sub i = k/cross section sub i, where k = 3.00 plus or minus 0.26.

Nuclear gamma-rays from energetic particle interactions

Gamma-ray line emission due to nuclear deexcitation following energetic particle interactions with abundant constituents of cosmic matter is studied. Reactions induced by energetic protons and alpha particles in ambient nuclei (He, C, N, O, Ne, Mg, Al, Si, S, Ca, and Fe) are considered, along with inverse reactions in which energetic nuclei interact with ambient H and He. Line-production cross sections are evaluated by analyzing a large body of laboratory nuclear data. Both prompt gamma rays, produced by direct excitation of nuclear levels and by spallation reactions that leave the secondary nucleus in an excited state, and delayed emission from long-lived radioactive nuclei also produced in the energetic particle reactions are investigated. A line list is provided, and the shapes of the gamma-ray lines are determined. Gamma-ray line production in the interstellar medium is evaluated in detail.
