A Practical Approach to Inertia Assessment: Analyzing New York's Grid Response to Real Events

The non-uniform distribution of inverter-based resources (IBRs) such as solar and wind energy leads to the formation of weakly coupled regions within the broader interconnection. This highlights the urgency of investigating regional dynamics. This paper proposes a practical framework for estimating regional inertia using actual event measurements from the New York (NY) region. The regional frequency is determined using measurement data from frequency disturbance recorders (FDRs) deployed across NY. The rate-of-change of frequency (RoCoF) is estimated using a hybrid methodology that combines the benefits of both moving and non-moving window techniques. By utilizing the power mismatch value and the estimated RoCoF, various inertia metrics such as regional RoCoF, inertia arrival time, and inertia percentage relative to the interconnection inertia are calculated. The identified confirmed-events that took place between 2017–2022 in NY are used in the study. This assessment of inertia using real event data reveals the true behavior of the grid under stress. The results indicate that as the generation mix in NY evolves with the rise of IBRs, both the RoCoF levels and the regional inertia undergo significant changes.

A re-examination of the mechanism of whiting events: A new role for diatoms in Fayetteville Green Lake (New York, USA)

Whiting events—the episodic precipitation of fine-grained suspended calcium carbonates in the water column—have been documented across a variety of marine and lacustrine environments. Whitings likely are a major source of carbonate muds, a constituent of limestones, and important archives for geochemical proxies of Earth history. While several biological and physical mechanisms have been proposed to explain the onset of these precipitation events, no consensus has been reached thus far. Fayetteville Green Lake (New York, USA) is a meromictic lake that experiences annual whitings. Materials suspended in the water column collected through the whiting season were characterized using scanning electron microscopy and scanning transmission X-ray microscopy. Whitings in Fayetteville Green Lake are initiated in the spring within the top few meters of the water column, by precipitation of fine amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) phases nucleating on microbial cells, as well as on abundant extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) frequently associated with centric diatoms. Whiting particles found in the summer consist of 5–7 μm calcite grains forming aggregates with diatoms and EPS. Simple calculations demonstrate that calcite particles continuously grow over several days, then sink quickly through the water column. In the late summer, partial calcium carbonate dissolution is observed deeper in the water column. Settling whiting particles, however, reach the bottom of the lake, where they form a major constituent of the sediment, along with diatom frustules. The role of diatoms and associated EPS acting as nucleation surfaces for calcium carbonates is described for the first time here as a potential mechanism participating in whitings at Fayetteville Green Lake. This mechanism may have been largely overlooked in other whiting events in modern and ancient environments.

Market participation strategy of hybrid energy resources: A New York ISO case study

Drawing on existing market designs with independent resource participation in electricity markets, this study analyzes participation models for hybrid resources combining renewable generation and storage. Two models are considered: in the first, the components operate independently, with the Independent System Operator (ISO) managing the storage state of charge (SoC); in the second, the hybrid resource acts as an integrated unit, submitting offers as a “black box” and managing its SoC internally. Using a production cost model for the zonal New York Bulk Power System, we evaluate trade-offs in system reliability, market efficiency, and asset profitability. Our results provide several key insights for policymakers, showing that the ISO-managed granular model enhances social welfare through explicit SoC management, while the simpler integrated model is more computationally efficient, but may cause more real-time violations and lower overall profits.

New York State Household Travel Patterns: A Comprehensive Comparison Analysis

In 1969, the U.S. Department of Transportation began an initiative to collect detailed data on household and personal travel, with the most recent surveys being the 2017 and 2022 National Household Travel Surveys. The primary goal of these surveys is to collect trip-based data on the nature and characteristics of personal travel, allowing for an analysis of the relationships between travel patterns and the socio-economic and demographic characteristics of travelers and their households. In addition to the sample households allocated to New York State (NYS) in the national survey, they procured an additional sample of households in the 1995, 2001, 2009, and 2017 surveys. This report presents a comprehensive analysis of travel patterns, vehicle ownership trends, and travel behaviors across NYS regions and the rest of the nation.

An interpretable machine learning framework to understand bikeshare demand before and during the COVID-19 pandemic in New York City

In recent years, bikesharing systems have become increasingly popular as affordable and sustainable micromobility solutions. Advanced mathematical models such as machine learning are required to generate good forecasts for bikeshare demand. Here, this study proposes a machine learning modeling framework to estimate hourly demand in a large-scale bikesharing system. Two Extreme Gradient Boosting models were developed: one using data from before the COVID-19 pandemic (March 2019 to February 2020) and the other using data from during the pandemic (March 2020 to February 2021). Furthermore, a model interpretation framework based on SHapley Additive exPlanations was implemented. Based on the relative importance of the explanatory variables considered in this study, share of female users and hour of day were the two most important explanatory variables in both models. However, the month variable had higher importance in the pandemic model than in the pre-pandemic model.

Recovery of Oxpure 612C-50 Coconut Carbon Particles Using Bump Arrays

Cyanide is used to leach gold from crushed ore (solid matrix) into a gold cyanide solution. The gold is extracted from the cyanide solution by adsorption onto activated carbon. The gold extraction process occurs when the activated coconut carbon is placed into tanks that contain the gold cyanide solution either in a batch process or into a continuous flow circuit. The coconut carbon is then removed from the solution for gold recovery. The use of the mesofluidic separation system (a deterministic lateral displacement system) can significantly reduce costs and waste generated from the process of removing the coconut carbon from the solution. In the coconut carbon recovery process used at many gold mines in Nevada, the gold is attached to carbon particles that are still in the cyanide liquor. The mesofluidic system can rapidly remove the gold bearing carbon particles from the cyanide liquor quickly and with no operating costs. The benefits include: • Reduce operational costs related to filtration and hydro-cyclones • Reduced acid usage for the elution gold stripping phase as only 25% of the fluids will follow the carbon particles to the final express lane when two mesofluidic systems are used in series This alternative particle removal techniques would be advantageous. A promising technique for removing larger particles from slurries is mesofluidic separation, similar to deterministic lateral displacement arrays or “bump” arrays [1] but operates at much larger flow rates. As described by Pease, et al. [2], “Bump arrays in deterministic lateral displacement devices separate large particles from small particles using arrays of staggered posts. Large particles, defined as those with radii larger than the distance between the edge of a post and the stagnation streamline from the next downstream post, must bump toward one side of the device, whereas particles smaller than this distance slalom from entrance to exit without net lateral displacement.” Unlike filters or sieves, the posts in the arrays that cause separation do not block or occlude particle flow but work because particles go around the posts. Unlike hydrocyclones separation, separation is not driven by particle density, because gravitational forces are unimportant to mesofluidic separation. Burns, et al., and Pease, et al., have shown that particles may be separated from complex suspensions, under turbulent flow conditions, and at industrially important flow rates [3-5]. They have also recently shown that mesofluidic devices may be arranged in series to increase separation performance [6]. In this paper, we evaluate the mesofluidic system for the separation of commercial OxPure GR 612 Charred Coconut shell particles as a proof of principle test for the rapid separation using the 1500 micron cut mesofluidic separator. We first describe the experimental system and conditions. We then present the experimental results. [1] Huang, L.R., E.C. Cox, R.H. Austin, J.C. Sturm. 2004. Variable Refrigerant Flow Performance: Humidity and Efficiency in Multifamily Buildings in New York, NY

Variable refrigerant flow (VRF) systems have become common in large multifamily buildings. The upfront cost is appealing to developers, as a single system can provide all heating and cooling. VRF systems also use no on-site fossil fuels which can help avoid greenhouse gas emissions. However, there have been very few data on how VRF systems actually perform in buildings. Researchers monitored three new, multifamily buildings with a focus on VRF system sizing, humidity control, and energy efficiency.

Assessment of Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices Toward Ticks and Tickborne Disease among Healthcare Professionals Working in Schools in New York and Maryland

Healthcare Professionals Working in Schools (HPWS) are responsible for providing health services to students and play a role in providing education to prevent illnesses, including tickborne diseases (TBD). Providing TBD education to children has been shown to increase prevention behaviors and knowledge of TBD symptoms, but little is known regarding the current state of TBD awareness among HPWS. In spring 2019 we conducted a cross-sectional knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) survey of HPWS in two states with a high incidence of Lyme disease (LD) to inform design of TBD prevention programs. The survey queried general knowledge of TBDs, school practices regarding TBDs, and availability of TBD resources. Overall, higher confidence, experience, risk perception, prior training on TBD, and more years employed as a HPWS were independently associated with knowledge of LD transmission, symptoms, and correct tick removal practices. State and local health departments should consider prioritizing engagement with HPWS to provide educational opportunities about tickborne diseases.
