The distribution of NO2(plus) in the lower ionosphere

Data on the NO2(+)(46 AMU) were obtained with a rocket-borne quadrupole ion mass spectrometer. The ion 46(+) is most prevalent in the vicinity of 90 km and is always observed in the presence of 48(+), identified as NO(+)-H2O. The observed concentrations of O(+)(16), O2(+)(32), NO2(+)(46), NO(+)-H2O(48), electrons, and the ratio 48(+)/46(+) are tabulated for altitudes from 87.8 to 93.2 km. Reactions governing the distribution of NO2(+) are briefly discussed, and it is felt that photoionization and charge exchange reactions are insufficient to account for the NO2(+) concentration at 90 km.

The use of high altitude remote sensing in determining existing vegetation and monitoring ecological stress

High altitude color and multispectral black and white photography was used to survey existing vegetation and soil conditions on the Empire Ranch where large scale development will soon begin. Utilizing stereo pairs of the high altitude color photography, four vegetation classifications were discernable as a function of topography and foliage characteristics. In contrast to the undeveloped Ranch, the same photography was used to detect environmental changes in the Tucson metropolitan area as a result of rapid urbanization. The most prevalent change related to development is the removal of vegetation in high density areas to allow for housing starts. Erosion then occurs where vegetation has been removed.

Time-spectral characteristics of large-scale cloud systems in the tropical Pacific.

Study of time series of areal cloud coverage over the central Pacific to determine the large-scale variations of tropical disturbance activity for a four-month period in 1967. The persistent and fluctuating components are found to be more prevalent in regions of high and low mean cloudiness, respectively, with major longitudinal variations in activity most evident in the Southern Hemisphere. Normalized power spectra show that the transient activity occurring in the equatorial zone is dominated by shorter periods of about four days, while longer periods are dominant away from the equator. Coherency magnitudes and phases between different locations indicate that propagating cloud systems are most identifiable at lower frequencies in the Southern Hemisphere, and at somewhat higher frequencies in the Northern Hemisphere. Activity with periods in excess of five days consists largely of both westward and eastward propagation on the planetary wave scale. The shorter periods appear to consist of both synoptic-scale and planetary-scale modes, with westward propagation dominant near the equator.

Testing techniques and comparisons between theory and test for vibration modes of ring stiffened truncated-cone shells.

Vibration tests were carried out on truncated-cone shells with widely spaced ring stiffeners. The models were excited by an air shaker for LF modes and by small electrodynamic shakers for HF modes. The Novozhilov thin shell theory according to which a ring is an assembly of an arbitrary number of segments, each being a short truncated-cone shell of uniform thickness, is used in the analysis of the results. A mobile, noncontacting, displacement-sensitive sensor system developed by the author was used in the tests. Tests results are given for a free-free 60-deg cone and for a clamped-free 60-deg cone. The tests are characterized as having considerable value for the classification of prevalent multimode responses in shells of this type.

The Value of Continued Followup in a Preventive Medicine Program

Continued monitoring of hypertension and cholesterol levels in NASA employees by regularly scheduled medical examinations prevents an increase in employee disability and cardiovascular mortality rates. Adequate therapeutic control for younger hypertensive employees is demonstrated by records on mortality and heart diseases over a period of 28 months. It confirmed the importance of systolic blood pressure as diagnostic tool for the inherent risk factor. The prevalence of additional coronary risk factors among employees with hypercholesterolemia is considerably less than in employees with hypertension.

Investigation of use of space data in watershed hydrology

The author has identified the following significant results. Ground truth data have been compiled and 256 rainfall runoff events have been used to detemine coefficients for two storm runoff equations that apply to the 20 study watersheds. Two scenes have been processed using CCT data. Data pertinent to each of the study watersheds have been excerpted from the tapes. A computer program and display technique has been developed to retrieve the data from irregular shaped areas and store it in a format that allows future display of only the area desired. Means, standard deviations, and distributions have been determined for extreme dry and extreme wet conditions in the dormant season. Mean digital values show some variation between watersheds when dry, but no significant differences when wet. Standard deviations of digital values diminish drastically under wet dormant conditions. Thus the standard deviations may be a good indicator of influence of moisture. Distributions of seven bit values show that odd numbers are prevalent and irregular distribution may influence some classification schemes now in use.

Study of application of ERTS-A imagery to fracture related mine safety hazards in the coal mining industry

The author has identified the following significant results. The 70mm black and white infrared photography acquired in March 1973 at an approximate scale of 1:115,000 permits the identification of areas of mine subsidence not readily evident on other films. This is largely due to the high contrast rendition of water and land by this film and the excessive surface moisture conditions prevalent in the area at the time of photography. Subsided areas consist of shallow depressions which have impounded water. Patterns with a regularity indicative of the room and pillar configuration used in subsurface coal mining are evident.

Principal sources and dispersal patterns of suspended particulate matter in nearshore surface waters of the northeast Pacific Ocean and seasonal variation in snow cover in the Sierra Nevada

The author has identified the following significant results. ERTS-1 imagery used in conjunction with the surface-drift cards indicated a southerly flow direction of the central California near surface coastal currents during mid-June 1973. The near-surface currents off northern California and southern Oregon were more complex. Some drift cards were recovered north and some south of their release points; however, the prevalent direction of flow was northerly. General agreement in flow direction of coastal currents obtained from ERTS-1 imagery and drift card data reinforces the image interpretation. Complete seasonal coverage of nearshore circulation interpreted from ERTS-1 imagery will provide information necessary for proper coastal zone management. Extent of snow cover can be readily delimited on ERTS-1 band 5. In the central Sierra Nevada Mountains this past winter season, the snow line, as recorded by ERTS-1, reached an elevation of less than 1500 meters in January but had melted back to between 2500 and 3000 meters by the end of May. ERTS-1 imagery seems to provide sufficient resolution to make it a useful tool for monitoring changes in snow cover in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

Extending the life and recycle capability of earth storable propellant systems.

Rocket propulsion systems for reusable vehicles will be required to operate reliably for a large number of missions with a minimum of maintenance and a fast turnaround. For the space shuttle reaction control system to meet these requirements, current and prior related system failures were examined for their impact on reuse and, where warranted, component design and/or system configuration changes were defined for improving system service life. It was found necessary to change the pressurization component arrangement used on many single-use applications in order to eliminate a prevalent check valve failure mode and to incorporate redundant expulsion capability in propellant tank designs to achieve the necessary system reliability. Material flaws in pressurant and propellant tanks were noted to have a significant effect on tank cycle life. Finally, maintenance considerations dictated a modularized systems approach, allowing the system to be removed from the vehicle for service and repair at a remote site.

Artificial meteor ablation studies: Olivine

Artificial meteor ablation was performed on a Mg-rich olivine sample using an arc-heated plasma of ionized air. Experimental conditions simulated a meteor traveling about 12 km/sec at an altitude of 70 km. The mineral content of the original olivine sample was 98% olivine (including traces of olivine alteration products) and 2% chromite. Forsterite content of the original olivine was Fo-89. After ablation, the forsterite content had increased to Fo-94 in the recrystallized olivine. In addition, lamella-like intergrowths of magnetite were prevalent constituents. Wherever magnetite occurred, there was an increase in Mg and a corresponding decrease in Fe for the recrystallized olivine. The Allende fusion crust consisted of a recrystallized olivine, which was more Mg-rich and Fe-deficient than the original meteorite's olivine, and abundant magnetite grains. Although troilite and pentlandite were the common opaque mineral constituents in this meteorite, magnetite was the principal opaque mineral found in the fusion crust.

Subcritical flutter testing and system identification

Treatment is given of system response evaluation, especially in application to subcritical flight and wind tunnel flutter testing of aircraft. An evaluation is made of various existing techniques, in conjuction with a companion survey which reports theoretical and analog experiments made to study the identification of system response characteristics. Various input excitations are considered, and new techniques for analyzing response are explored, particularly in reference to the prevalent practical case where unwanted input noise is present, such as caused by gusts or wind tunnel turbulence. Further developments are also made of system parameter identification techniques.

Which electromagnetic equations apply in rotating coordinates

It was discovered some years ago by Schiff that two equations for fields in vacuum do not carry over without change from an inertial frame to a frame with rotating axes of space coordinates, even for a region with all velocities much lower than the speed of light. However, the belief that all four of the field equations are invariant under such conditions is still prevalent and causes misconceptions in physical applications, including astrophysical and geophysical ones. The purpose of the present paper is therefore to call attention to Schiff's discovery, discussing its basis and its extension to fields in material media, and to interpret the additional terms that must be added to the equations in order to obtain valid transformations to rotating axes of coordinates.

Artificial meteor ablation studies - Olivine

Artificial meteor ablation has been performed on a Mg-rich olivine sample by means of an arc-heated plasma of ionized air. Experimental conditions simulated a meteor traveling about 12 km/sec at an altitude of 70 km. The mineral content of the original olivine was 98% olivine (including traces of olivine alteration products) and 2% chromite. The forsterite content of the original olivine was Fo 89 and increased to Fo 94 in the recrystallized olivine after ablation. In addition, lamella-like intergrowths of magnetite were prevalent. Wherever magnetite occurred, Mg increased and Fe decreased in the recrystallized olivine. The Fe for the magnetite exsolved from the original olivine crystals. Individual particles (i.e., spherules) were also characterized by magnetite intergrowths. Fusion crusts on the Allende and Murchison meteorites were compared with the fusion crust on the olivine sample. The Allende fusion crust consisted of a recrystallized olivine, richer in Mg and deficient in Fe in comparison with the original meteorite's olivine, and abundant magnetite grains.

Microscale Alfven waves in the solar wind at 1 AU

Analysis of IMP 1 (Explorer 43) plasma and magnetic field fluctuations on a scale of one hour revealed that linearly and circularly polarized Alfven waves are rarely present in the solar wind at 1 AU. The most prevalent microscale fluctuations appeared to be large-amplitude Alfven waves with small but non-zero fluctuations in the magnetic field intensity. These waves are present about 40% of the time and are predominantly propagating away from the sun.

An observation on tone cut-off in static test data from jet engine fans

The far-field acoustic data for eight full-scale fans tested at a NASA-Lewis outdoor facility were analyzed for the effect of a cut-off design feature where the number of rotor and stator blades are proportioned so that the blade-passage tone will not propagate. Inlet flow distortions, prevalent during static testing, interact with the rotor to generate tones that generally mask this cut-off phenomenon. Distortion tone properties previously evaluated are used to analyze the tones propagating from the aft fan duct. The analyzed data clearly differentiated the fans that are and are not cut-off.

Scattering of helium nozzle beams from LiF/001/ and NaCl/001/ crystal surfaces. I - Elastic and inelastic transitions

Nozzle-type atomic beams and time-of-flight detection methods are employed in studies of the scattering of thermal-energy He-4 atoms from LiF (001) and NaCl (001) surfaces under conditions where diffraction is observed and where substantial inelastic scattering occurs. Intensity and speed-distribution measurements are obtained for the portion of the scattering within the plane of incidence. For these measurements, incident-beam orientation with respect to target (polar angle and azimuth), incident-beam de Broglie wavelength (0.38-0.60 A), and crystal temperature (300-1000 K) are varied. For LiF, the measured intensity distributions exhibit sharp peaks comprised essentially of elastically scattered atoms and corresponding to up to third-order diffraction, inelastic scattering in the form of local dispersion about each of the elastic peaks, and a component of nominally diffuse scattering distributed below and between the peaks. For NaCl, the same general types of scattering are observed, with elastic scattering less prevalent, intensity peaks not as sharp, and dispersions of inelastic scattering harder to resolve.

The gamma Cygni supernova remnant and nebula

The object is anomalous, and the existing data appear to be rather contradictory or ambiguous. We discuss previous and new observations. The new observations are: Palomar Schmidt plates in the blue, yellow, red, and near-infrared; radiofrequency-continuum maps at 7.875 and 15.5 GHz; flux densities at 31.4 and 85 GHz; and H 94 alpha-line data. A nebula, found only in the red, is identifiable with a small component of a supernova remnant which is altogether about 1 deg in diameter. The spectral index of the large, nonthermal remnant is prevalently about -0.8, but the index is probably not less than -0.5 in the small component. The amorphous structure of the red nebula suggests that its light is nonthermal, since it is not a reflection nebula of the star gamma Cygni.
