The FAA aging airplane program plan for transport aircraft

The FAA Aging Airplane Program is focused on five program areas: maintenance, transport airplanes, commuter airplanes, airplane engines, and research. These programs are complementary and concurrent, and have been in effect since 1988. The programs address the aging airplane challenge through different methods, including policies, procedures, and hardware development. Each program is carefully monitored and its progress tracked to ensure that the needs of the FAA, the industry, and the flying public are being met.

Nasa Program Plan

Major facts are given for NASA'S planned FY-1981 through FY-1985 programs in aeronautics, space science, space and terrestrial applications, energy technology, space technology, space transportation systems, space tracking and data systems, and construction of facilities. Competition and cooperation, reimbursable launchings, schedules and milestones, supporting research and technology, mission coverage, and required funding are considered. Tables and graphs summarize new initiatives, significant events, estimates of space shuttle flights, and major missions in astrophysics, planetary exploration, life sciences, environmental and resources observation, and solar terrestrial investigations. The growth in tracking and data systems capabilities is also depicted.

Solar electric propulsion system /SEPS/ program plans and system definition

The status of the NASA Solar Electric Propulsion System (SEPS) program is reviewed. The plans for SEPS definition and development include the initiation of the SEPS definition phase, the procurement for full-scale development in 1980, delivery of the SEPS for integration and tests with the comet rendezvous spacecraft in 1984, and a launch in 1985 that involves a flyby of Halley's comet in 1985 and a subsequent rendezvous with the comet Tempel 2 in 1988. In preparation for this, the acquisition process for SEPS has been initiated based on mission requirements rather than system requirements.

Solid earth science in the 1990s. Volume 1: Program plan

This is volume one of a three volume series. A plan for solid earth science research for the next decade is outlined. The following topics are addressed: scientific requirements; status of current research; major new emphasis in the 1990's; interagency and international participation; and the program implementation plan. The following fields are represented: plate motion and deformation; lithospheric structure and evolution; volcanology; land surface (processes of change); earth structure and dynamics; earth rotation and reference frames; and geopotential fields. Other topics of discussion include remote sensing, space missions, and space techniques.

Definition of space shuttle program plan, study

The preliminary definition of an economical space shuttle program in which the evolution to full operational capability is achieved through phased subsystem development is presented. The following aspects of the program are discussed: (1) definition of system and subsystem configurations, (2) definition of phased evolution to final configuration, (3) analysis of design, test, cost, and schedule requirements, (4) definition of candidate booster designs and programs to facilitate selection, and (5) definition of program, system, and vehicle requirements.

Space shuttle maintenance program planning document

A means for developing a space shuttle maintenance program which will be acceptable to the development centers, the operators (KSC and AF), and the manufacturer is presented. The general organization and decision processes for determining the essential scheduled maintenance requirements for the space shuttle orbiter are outlined. The development of initial scheduled maintenance programs is discussed. The remaining maintenance, that is non-scheduled or non-routine maintenance, is directed by the findings of the scheduled maintenance program and the normal operation of the shuttle. The remaining maintenance consists of maintenance actions to correct discrepancies noted during scheduled maintenance tasks, nonscheduled maintenance, normal operation, or condition monitoring.

Implications of Public Opinion for Space Program Planning, 1980 - 2000

The effect of public opinion on future space programs is discussed in terms of direct support, apathy, or opposition, and concern about the tax burden, budgetary pressures, and national priorities. Factors considered include: the salience and visibility of NASA as compared with other issues, the sources of general pressure on the federal budget which could affect NASA, the public's opinions regarding the size and priority of NASA'S budget, the degree to which the executive can exercise leverage over NASA's budget through influencing or disregarding public opinion, the effects of linkages to other issues on space programs, and the public's general attitudes toward the progress of science.

NASA program planning on nuclear electric propulsion

As part of the focused technology planning for future NASA space science and exploration missions, NASA has initiated a focused technology program to develop the technologies for nuclear electric propulsion and nuclear thermal propulsion. Beginning in 1990, NASA began a series of interagency planning workshops and meetings to identify key technologies and program priorities for nuclear propulsion. The high-priority, near-term technologies that must be developed to make NEP operational for space exploration include scaling thrusters to higher power, developing high-temperature power processing units, and developing high power, low-mass, long-lived nuclear reactors.

Space Tug - Mission and program planning

An additional propulsive stage, carried in the payload bay, will be necessary for delivery of payloads to orbits beyond those which can be reached by the Shuttle alone. The concept of a reusable third stage, or Space Tug, has been under study for several years. Aspects of space tug operations planning are discussed together with payload studies, shuttle third stage program options, expendable stage studies, growth stage studies, and engine studies. Studies concerning reusable space tugs are considered, giving attention to a minimum development cost tug, a direct developed tug for 1983 operational capability, and a phased developed tug. Payload requirements are examined along with shuttle interface requirements, ground operations, and program options.

Exploration Technology Program plans and directions

A summary of the proposed Space Exploration Initiative (SEI) needs that have been identified is presented along with a detailed review of the status of SEI technology planning. Plans are also being formulated to implement an Exploration Technology Program (ETP) that will develop the major technologies required for SEI. The ETP will provide in the near term clear demonstrations of potential exploration technologies, results of research to support SEI architecture decisions, and a foundation of mature technology that is ready to be applied in the first round of SEI missions. A family of functional building blocks has been defined from which both lunar and Mars SEI mission architectures can be constructed.

The space station program plan

The strategy that has been adopted for the NASA permanent manned space station development program is to provide a source of different modular components. Virtually any tactical requirements can then be accommodated through the specification of the appropriate inventory of orbitally assembled modular components. Some of the space station's subsystems are common to several elements, and must therefore be generally compatible, offering consistent interfaces with, for example, the Space Shuttle Orbiter. Tethered systems, including small platforms for controlled micro-g experiments, will be incorporated, and the occasional presence of two docked Space Shuttle Orbiters will be allowed for.
