Astronomical imaging by pupil plane interferometry

Comparing rotational shear interferometry to standard speckle interferometry, it is found that it is easier in the first case to separate the atmospheric phases from the object transform phases. Phase closure and blind deconvolution should be directly applicable. Laboratory simulations were conducted to verify theoretical predictions and computer simulations for the phase closure case, and preliminary results show promise.

Optical alignment of a pupil imaging spectrometer

The GOES Sounder is a 19-channel discrete filter spectrometer with an additional channel for star sensing. This paper presents the GOES Sounder's instrument optics and compensations, alignment rationale, and alignment mechanism and sensitivities. The results of a line of sight tolerance analysis of the instrument are described, and the prealignment and instrument coregistration are addressed.

Pupil configurations for an interferometric TPF mission

The primary goal of the proposed Terrestrial Planet Finder mission is the direct detection of radiation from potential terrestrial planets orbiting around nearby stars. However, the faintness of the expected signals leads to very stringent technical requirements on the optical performance. As a result, both of the candidate approaches currently under active development by the TPF project, infrared nulling interferometry with separated aperture telescopes, and optical coronagraphy with a large singl aperture telescope, require complex optical systems which push the state of the art.
