Dynamical ground state in the XY pyrochlore Yb2GaSbO7

Abstract The magnetic ground state of the pyrochlore Yb 2 GaSbO 7 has not been established. The persistent spin fluctuations observed by muon spin-relaxation measurements at low temperatures have not been adequately explained for this material using existing theories for quantum magnetism. Here we report on the synthesis and characterisation of Yb 2 GaSbO 7 to revisit the nature of the magnetic ground state. Through DC and AC magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, and neutron scattering experiments, we observe evidence for a dynamical ground state that makes Yb 2 GaSbO 7 a promising candidate for disorder-induced spin-liquid or spin-singlet behaviour. This state is quite fragile, being tuned to a splayed ferromagnet in a modest magnetic field μ 0 H c ~ 1.5 T.

Surface thermodynamics of yttrium titanate pyrochlore nanomaterials

Critical particle size can be determined with known surface energy. The surface enthalpy of yttrium titanate pyrochlores was determined to be 4.07 ± 0.32 J m −2 by calorimetry, and the lower limit of critical particle size for this is around 5.0 nm.

Magnetic ordering in the Ising antiferromagnetic pyrochlore Nd 2 ScNbO 7

The question of structural disorder and its effects on magnetism is relevant to a number of spin liquid candidate materials. Although commonly thought of as a route to spin glass behaviour, here we describe a system in which the structural disorder results in long-range antiferromagnetic order due to local symmetry breaking. Nd 2 ScNbO 7 is shown to have a dispersionless gapped excitation observed in other neodymium pyrochlores below T N = 0.37 K through polarized and inelastic neutron scattering. However the dispersing spin waves are not observed. This excited mode is shown to occur in only 14(2)% of the neodymium ions through spectroscopy and is consistent with total scattering measurements as well as the magnitude of the dynamic moment 0.26(2) μB . The remaining magnetic species order completely into the all-in all-out Ising antiferromagnetic structure. This can be seen as a result of local symmetry breaking due disordered Sc +3 and Nb +5 ions about the A-site. From this work, it has been established that B-site disorder restores the dipole-like behaviour of the Nd +3 ions compared to the Nd 2 ScNbO 7 parent series.

Decoding ionic conductivity and reordering in cation-disordered pyrochlores

The ordered structure A 2 B 2 O 6 O’ in pyrochlores engenders twin rows of inequivalent anion sublattices each centred on alternating cations. While it is known that cation antisite disorder augments the ionic conductivity by several orders of magnitude, the local cation environment around the anions and the dynamic anion reordering during the cation disordering are not well-elucidated. Using atomistic simulations on Gd 2 Zr 2 O 7 , we first show that the anions engage in concerted hops to the neighbouring tetrahedral sites mostly along with the $\langle$1 0 0$\rangle$ direction while completely avoiding the octahedral sites. While the initially vacant 8 a sites start accommodating oxygen ions with increasing cation disorder, they show noticeable reluctance even at significant levels of disorder. We have also tracked both the distribution of available oxygen sites following random cation disorder, which is dependent only on cation disordering, and the probability of occupation of these sites. Interestingly, the available oxygen sites show a non-monotonic dependence on the number of B ions in the nearest neighbouring shell while the occupation probability of all the available oxygen sites increases monotonically. A tetrahedral oxygen site thus has a better probability of being occupied when it has a greater number of second neighbour B ions. Softening of breathing elastic mode and trigonal elastic mode in the disordered pyrochlore magnet NaCaCo 2 F 7

Cobalt pyrochlore fluoride NaCaCo 2 F 7 is a disordered frustrated magnet that is composed of Co 2+ ions with an effective spin-12 magnetic moment and that exhibits spin freezing below $T_f ~$ 2.4 K. Here, we perform ultrasound velocity measurements on a single crystal of the cubic NaCaCo 2 F 7 . The temperature dependence of the bulk modulus (the breathing elastic mode) exhibits Curie-type softening upon cooling below ~20 K down to $T_f$, which is suppressed by the magnetic field. This Curie-type softening should be a precursor to the enhancement of the strength of exchange disorder via the spin-lattice coupling, which causes the spin freezing. In contrast to the magnetic-field-suppressed Curie-type softening in the bulk modulus, the trigonal shear modulus exhibits softening with a characteristic minimum upon cooling, which is enhanced by the magnetic field at temperatures below ~20 K. This magnetic-field-enhanced elastic anomaly in the trigonal shear modulus suggests a coupling of the lattice to the dynamical spin-cluster state. For NaCaCo 2 F 7 , the observed elastic anomalies reveal an occurrence of magnetic-field-induced crossover from an isostructural lattice instability toward the spin freezing to a trigonal lattice instability arising from the emergent dynamical spin-cluster state.

First-principles studies of the unconventional spin-phonon coupling mediated by spin-orbit coupling in pyrochlore Cd 2 Os 2 O 7

Here, we perform systematic first-principles calculations to investigate the spin-phonon coupling (SPC) mediated by spin-orbit coupling in pyrochlore Cd 2 Os 2 O 7 which has the peculiar all-in-all-out noncollinear magnetic ground state. A large SPC coefficient up to 34 cm –1 is found, showing the potential of using this material in thermal spin devices. We further split the SPC coefficients to contributions from symmetric exchange interaction, Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), and the single ion anisotropy. Unlike what was assumed in previous studies, the DMI contributions are rather important for most modes. These results provide insights for the understanding of the SPC in 5d transition metal oxides and useful guidance for the search of excellent spin caloritronic materials.

Pressure control of magnetic order and excitations in the pyrochlore antiferromagnet MgCr 2 ⁢O 4

MgCr 2 O 4 is one of the best-known realizations of the pyrochlore-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet. The strong antiferromagnetic exchange interactions are perturbed by small further-neighbor exchanges such that this compound may in principle realize a spiral spin liquid (SSL) phase in the zero-temperature limit. However, a spin Jahn-Teller transition below T N ≈ 13 K yields a complicated long-range magnetic order with multiple coexisting propagation vectors. We present neutron scattering and thermomagnetic measurements of MgCr 2 O 4 samples under applied hydrostatic pressure up to P = 1.7 GPa demonstrating the existence of multiple close-lying nearly degenerate magnetic ground states. We show that the application of hydrostatic pressure increases the ordering temperature by around 0.8 K per GPa and increases the bandwidth of the magnetic excitations by around 0.5 meV per GPa. We also evidence a strong tendency for the preferential occupation of a subset of magnetic domains under pressure. In particular, we show that the $k$ = (0,0,1) magnetic phase, which is almost negligible at ambient pressure, dramatically increases in spectral weight under pressure. This modifies the spectrum of magnetic excitations, which we interpret unambiguously as spin waves from multiple magnetic domains. Moreover, we report that the application of pressure reveals a feature in the magnetic susceptibility above the magnetostructural transition. We interpret this as the onset of a short-range ordered phase associated with $k$ = (0,0,1), previously not observed in magnetometry measurements.

Local distortion driven magnetic phase switching in pyrochlore Yb 2 ( Ti 1 - x Sn x ) 2 O 7

While it is commonly accepted that the disorder induced by magnetic ion doping in quantum magnets usually generates a rugged free-energy landscape resulting in slow or glassy spin dynamics, the disorder/distortion effects associated with nonmagnetic ion sites doping are still illusive. Here, using AC susceptibility measurements, we show that the mixture of Sn/Ti on the nonmagnetic ion sites of pyrochlore Yb 2 ⁢(Ti 1-x⁢ Sn x ) 2⁢ O 7 induces an antiferromagnetic ground state despite both parent compounds, Yb 2 ⁢Ti 2 ⁢O 7 and Yb 2 ⁢Sn 2⁢ O 7 , order ferromagnetically. Local structure studies through neutron total scattering reveals the local distortion in the nonmagnetic ion sites and its strong correlation with the magnetic phase switching. Further, our study demonstrates the local distortion as induced by the nonmagnetic ion site mixture could be a new path to achieve magnetic phase switching, which has been traditionally obtained by external stimuli such as temperature, magnetic field, pressure, strain, light, etc.

Inverse design of a pyrochlore lattice of DNA origami through model-driven experiments

Sophisticated statistical mechanics approaches and human intuition have demonstrated the possibility of self-assembling complex lattices or finite-size constructs. However, attempts so far have mostly only been successful in silico and often fail in experiment because of unpredicted traps associated with kinetic slowing down (gelation, glass transition) and competing ordered structures. Theoretical predictions also face the difficulty of encoding the desired interparticle interaction potential with the experimentally available nano- and micrometer-sized particles. To overcome these issues, we combine SAT assembly (a patchy-particle interaction design algorithm based on constrained optimization) with coarse-grained simulations of DNA nanotechnology to experimentally realize trap-free self-assembly pathways. In this paper, we use this approach to assemble a pyrochlore three-dimensional lattice, coveted for its promise in the construction of optical metamaterials, and characterize it with small-angle x-ray scattering and scanning electron microscopy visualization.

One-step solution combustion synthesis (SCS) methods for fabricating durable crystalline transuranic-doped rare earth zirconium pyrochlores are described. Methods are fast, amenable to upscaling, and present a simple strategy for producing crystalline ceramic materials that meet the minimum attractiveness criteria for special nuclear material. The methods include analysis of reactants and reaction conditions to select proper fuel as well as proper fuel content so as to encourage formation of the crystalline product in a single-step synthesis procedure.

Dynamical moment fragmentation in the all-in all-out pyrochlore Nd 2 ⁢Sn 2⁢ O 7

We report single crystal neutron spectroscopy and bulk characterization on hydrothermally grown Nd 2 Sn 2 O 7 , revealing magnetic moment fragmentation embedded within the all-in–all-out ordered state. The spectra reveal a nearly flat band with pinch-point momentum dependence accompanied by dispersive branches that produce half-moon features across multiple Brillouin zones. These defining signatures are captured quantitatively by a minimal dipolar-octupolar spin Hamiltonian, demonstrating excellent agreement between experiment and theory. The higher flat-mode energy helps account for the absence of dynamical interference in prior μSR studies, while the lack of any photon-like excitation imposes strict constraints on the proposed Coulombic antiferromagnet scenario. Furthermore, our results extend moment fragmentation to Nd 2 Sn 2 O 7 and identify it as a clean, tractable platform for quantitative exploration of emergent gauge field physics in frustrated magnets.

Soft-Chemical Synthesis, Structure Evolution, and Insulator-to-Metal Transition in Pyrochlore-like λ-RhO 2

λ-RhO 2 , a prototype 4d transition metal oxide, has been prepared by the oxidative delithiation of spinel LiRh 2 O 4 using ceric ammonium nitrate. Average-structure studies of this RhO 2 polytype, including synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction and electron diffraction, indicate the room-temperature structure to be tetragonal, in space group I4 1 /amd, with a first-order structural transition to cubic $Fd\bar{3}m$ at T = 345 K on warming. Synchrotron X-ray pair distribution function analysis and 7 Li solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance measurements suggest that the room-temperature structure displays local Rh-Rh bonding. The formation of these local dimers appears to be associated with a metal-to-insulator transition with a nonmagnetic ground state, as also supported by density functional theory-based electronic structure calculations. In conclusion, this contribution demonstrates the power of soft chemistry to kinetically stabilize a simple binary oxide compound.
