Quantum Computing and Simulations for Energy-Related Applications

Quantum Information Science (QIS) is an emerging field that has the potential to cause revolutionary advances in many areas of science and engineering, and nations around the world are vying for dominance in the field. To support DOE urgent task to make sure the U.S. wins the quantum race, in Spring of 2019 NETL started to establish and maintain QIS competency by focusing on energy-related applications. After more than five years’ hard-working, NETL QUEST (quantum for energy systems & technologies) team has made great progress on quantum sensing and quantum computing for energy applications. Significant outcomes have been achieved. To report our research progress and to propose new research directions, in this presentation at the American Physical Society (APS) annual meeting, I'm highlighting the progress of QUEST team on quantum computing for energy-related applications.

Large-scale simulations of Floquet physics on near-term quantum computers

Abstract Periodically driven quantum systems exhibit a diverse set of phenomena but are more challenging to simulate than their equilibrium counterparts. Here, we introduce the Quantum High-Frequency Floquet Simulation (QHiFFS) algorithm as a method to simulate fast-driven quantum systems on quantum hardware. Central to QHiFFS is the concept of a kick operator which transforms the system into a basis where the dynamics is governed by a time-independent effective Hamiltonian. This allows prior methods for time-independent simulation to be lifted to simulate Floquet systems. We use the periodically driven biaxial next-nearest neighbor Ising (BNNNI) model, a natural test bed for quantum frustrated magnetism and criticality, as a case study to illustrate our algorithm. We implemented a 20-qubit simulation of the driven two-dimensional BNNNI model on Quantinuum’s trapped ion quantum computer. Our error analysis shows that QHiFFS exhibits not only a cubic advantage in driving frequency ω but also a linear advantage in simulation time t compared to Trotterization.

Quantum Computing in Next-Generation Transportation Optimization

We explore how quantum computing (QC) can advance transportation optimization, with a focus on two high-impact areas: traffic signal control and vehicle electrification with grid integration. As transportation systems grow in complexity, classical optimization methods increasingly struggle to deliver scalable and efficient solutions, particularly for real-time, data-rich environments. This work identifies key challenges within these two domains where QC may offer advantages, particularly in handling combinatorial decision spaces and dynamic constraints. We begin by outlining the limitations of classical approaches for traffic signal control optimization and electric vehicle charging coordination, highlighting where computational limitations arise. Previous quantum formulations are presented and new formulations are proposed to demonstrate how emerging quantum algorithms, including quantum annealing and the Quantum Approximation Optimization Algorithm, could be leveraged to reformulate and address these problems. We also evaluate the suitability of current quantum hardware and discuss recent trends that indicate when QC may become a viable tool for transportation applications. While acknowledging the present limitations of QC technologies, this poster emphasizes the importance of preparing quantum-compatible models today. By reviewing and establishing formulations that align with the strengths of quantum algorithms, researchers and practitioners can better position themselves to take advantage of QC advancements as they occur. This work aims to provide a practical, forward-looking perspective on the near-term potential of quantum computing in transportation optimization.

Dependable classical-quantum computing systems engineering

Increasing evidence suggests quantum computing (QC) complements traditional High-Performance Computing (HPC) by leveraging its unique capabilities, leading to the emergence of a new, hybrid paradigm, QHPC. However, this integration introduces new challenges, with dependability–defined by reproducibility, resiliency, and security and privacy–emerging as a central concern for building trustworthy systems that provide an advantage to the users. This paper proposes a framework for dependable QHPC system design, organized around these three pillars. We identify integration challenges, anticipate roadblocks, and highlight productive synergies across QC, HPC, cloud platforms, and network security. Drawing from both classical computing principles and quantum-specific insights, we present a roadmap for co-design that supports robust hybrid architectures. Our approach offers concrete metrics for assessing dependability, provides design guidance for engineers working at the QC-HPC interface, and surfaces new engineering questions around complexity, scale, and fault tolerance. Ultimately, designing for dependability is key to realizing practical, scalable QHPC systems and accelerating the broader quantum ecosystem capable of translating quantum promises into actual application delivery.

Building a quantum computing architecture using 3D superconducting cavities

Quantum computers promise advantages over classical machines for solving certain complex problems, but building processors that truly deliver this advantage remains a central challenge, particularly due to limited coherence times. Three-dimensional superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) cavities offer an attractive platform due to their exceptionally long lifetimes. However, since these harmonic systems require nonlinear elements, such as transmons, for control, additional losses are often introduced. In this talk, I will present a multimode quantum system based on an elliptical SRF cavity hosting two cavity modes weakly coupled to an ancillary transmon circuit. This architecture is carefully engineered to preserve coherence while enabling efficient control. By optimizing the design to mitigate transmon-induced decoherence, we realize single-photon lifetimes of 20.6 ms and 15.6 ms in the two modes, with pure dephasing times exceeding 40 ms. Using sideband interactions and error-resilient protocols, such as measurement-based correction and post-selection, we demonstrate high-fidelity state control, including preparation of Fock states up to N=20 with fidelities above 95% (to our knowledge, the highest reported to date), as well as high-fidelity two-mode entanglement. These results highlight 3D SRF cavities as a robust foundation for qudit-based quantum information processing, harnessing the large Hilbert space of cavity modes. I will conclude by outlining strategies to further enhance coherence in both cavities and ancilla qubits, and discuss pathways toward scaling this architecture into a larger quantum computing platform.

Integrating Quantum Computing with High-Performance Computing: A Streamlined Approach

In recent years, quantum computing has demon-strated the potential to revolutionize specific algorithms and applications by solving problems exponentially faster than classical computers. However, its widespread adoption for general computing remains a future prospect. This paper discusses the integration of quantum computing within High-Performance Computing (HPC) environments, focusing on a resource management framework designed to streamline quantum simulators' use and enhance runtime performance and efficiency. The proposed framework facilitates hybrid applications' transition from simulation backends to real quantum hardware, optimizing resource utilization and providing a flexible infrastructure for developing and testing quantum algorithms.

Quantum Computation by Optically Coupled Steady Atoms/Quantum-Dots Inside a Quantum Cavity

We present a model for quantum computation using $n$ steady 3-level atoms kept inside a quantum cavity, or using $n$ quantum-dots (QDs) kept inside a quantum cavity. In this model one external laser is pointed towards all the atoms/QDs, and $n$ pairs of electrodes are addressing the atoms/QDs, so that each atom is addressed by one pair. The energy levels of each atom/QD are controlled by an external Stark field given to the atom/QD by its external pair of electrodes. Transition between two energy levels of an individual atom/ QD are controlled by the voltage on its electrodes, and by the external laser. Interactions between two atoms/ QDs are performed with the additional help of the cavity mode (using on-resonance condition). Laser frequency, cavity frequency, and energy levels are far off-resonance most of the time, and they are brought to the resonance (using the Stark effect) only at the time of operations. Steps for a controlled-NOT gate between any two atoms/QDs have been described for this model. Our model demands some challenging technological efforts, such as manufacturing single-electron QDs inside a cavity. However, it promises big advantages over other existing models which are currently implemented, and might enable a much easier scale-up, to compute with many more qubits.

MSD CoP Webinar: Quantum Computing Futures through a Multisector Lens

Context: This webinar featured two presentations examining quantum computing and its complex implications across the energy, water, and materials sectors. Olivier Ezratty introduced quantum computing, its anticipated applications and added value, and the hardware required to support these systems. He also discussed their energy demands and the role of the Quantum Energy Initiative in developing an interdisciplinary research field focused on these challenges. David McCollum then explored the opportunities and multisectoral challenges associated with next-generation, quantum-accelerated data centers, including their potential energy and resource impacts and the infrastructure chokepoints that could emerge. Together, the presentations emphasized the need for long-term planning and cross-cutting research collaboration as quantum computing technologies continue to develop. SRF-Based Quantum Transduction for Quantum Computing and Sensing

The next groundbreaking frontier in Quantum Information Science (QIS) is the development of low-noise interconnections over fiber optics between superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) quantum devices. High-efficiency microwave-optical transduction serves as a pivotal enabler for distributed quantum computing and sensor networks. This presentation will provide a comprehensive overview of quantum transduction achieved by coupling SRF cavities to electro-optic optical resonators, enabling efficient conversion between microwave and optical photons. This research, supported by the DOE Early Career Research Program, advances technologies for quantum computing and sensing, and complements the mission of the Superconducting Quantum Materials and Systems (SQMS) Center at Fermilab.

Assessing Ground State Energy of Molecules and Energy Profile of the NH3 Capturing CO2 System Using the Quantum Computing Algorithms

Molecule size correlates with the number of electrons on electronic energies and strength of anharmonicity on vibrational properties, however, it is challenging to address using classical computing. In this study, variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) algorithm was implemented on a quantum simulator to quantify electronic and vibrational energies and reaction pathways of CO2 + NH3 = NH2COOH. The VQE-based Hartree-Fock-Embedding algorithm was adopted to benchmark electronic energies for a series of molecules (doi.org/10.1063/5.0188249) and quantify the reaction energy profile of the CO2 capture reaction (doi.org/10.1116/5.0137750). The generated reaction profile is in good agreement with the classical high-level Coupled-Cluster-Singles-and-Doubles (CCSD) results. The quantum computing algorithm also helps enhance the calculation of vibrational ground-state energies by considering the many-body coupling using the Vibrational Self-Consistent Field method, providing results for CO2 and NH3 molecules with accuracy comparable to the direct diagonalization method. Our approach indicates quantum computing can be applied to solve practical problems.

Quantum computing universal thermalization dynamics in a (2 + 1)D Lattice Gauge Theory

Simulating non-equilibrium phenomena in strongly-interacting quantum many-body systems, including thermalization, is a promising application of near-term and future quantum computation. By performing experiments on a digital quantum computer consisting of fully-connected optically-controlled trapped ions, we study the role of entanglement in the thermalization dynamics of a Z 2 lattice gauge theory in 2+1 spacetime dimensions. Using randomized-measurement protocols, we efficiently learn a classical approximation of non-equilibrium states that yields the gap-ratio distribution and the spectral form factor of the entanglement Hamiltonian. These observables exhibit universal early-time signals for quantum chaos, a prerequisite for thermalization. Our work, therefore, establishes quantum computers as robust tools for studying universal features of thermalization in complex many-body systems, including in gauge theories.

The role of quantum computing in advancing scientific high-performance computing: A perspective from the ADAC institute

Quantum computing (QC) has gained significant attention over the past two decades due to its potential for speeding up classically demanding tasks. This transition from an academic focus to a thriving commercial sector is reflected in substantial global investments. While advancements in qubit counts and functionalities continue at a rapid pace, current quantum systems still lack the scalability for practical applications, facing challenges such as too high error rates and limited coherence times. Here, this perspective paper examines the relationship between QC and high-performance computing (HPC), highlighting their complementary roles in enhancing computational efficiency. It is widely acknowledged that even fully error-corrected QC will not be suited for all computational tasks. Rather, future compute infrastructures are anticipated to employ quantum acceleration within hybrid systems that integrate HPC and QC. While QC can enhance classical computing, traditional HPC remains essential for maximizing quantum acceleration. This integration is a priority for supercomputing centers and companies, sparking innovation to address the challenges of merging these technologies. The novelty of this work lies in its unique perspective, reflecting the collective insights of the Accelerated Data Analytics and Computing (ADAC) Institute, a global consortium of over 20 leading HPC centers. Recognizing the growing importance of QC, ADAC established a Quantum Computing Working Group in 2023 to foster collaboration and knowledge-sharing among its members. This paper synthesizes insights from the group’s collaborative efforts and incorporates findings from a member survey that captures shared experiences, ongoing projects, and strategic directions. By outlining the current landscape and challenges of QC integration into HPC ecosystems, this work offers HPC specialists practical and forward-looking guidance on the opportunities and implications of QC in computationally intensive endeavors.

SCB Quantum Computers Using iSWAP and 1-Qubit Rotations

Units of superconducting circuitry that exploit the concept of the single- Cooper-pair box (SCB) have been built and are undergoing testing as prototypes of logic gates that could, in principle, constitute building blocks of clocked quantum computers. These units utilize quantized charge states as the quantum information-bearing degrees of freedom. An SCB is an artificial two-level quantum system that comprises a nanoscale superconducting electrode connected to a reservoir of Cooper-pair charges via a Josephson junction. The logical quantum states of the device, .0. and .1., are implemented physically as a pair of charge-number states that differ by 2e (where e is the charge of an electron). Typically, some 109 Cooper pairs are involved. Transitions between the logical states are accomplished by tunneling of Cooper pairs through the Josephson junction. Although the two-level system contains a macroscopic number of charges, in the superconducting regime, they behave collectively, as a Bose-Einstein condensate, making possible a coherent superposition of the two logical states. This possibility makes the SCB a candidate for the physical implementation of a qubit. A set of quantum logic operations and the gates that implement them is characterized as universal if, in principle, one can form combinations of the operations in the set to implement any desired quantum computation. To be able to design a practical quantum computer, one must first specify how to decompose any valid quantum computation into a sequence of elementary 1- and 2-qubit quantum gates that are universal and that can be realized in hardware that is feasible to fabricate. Traditionally, the set of universal gates has been taken to be the set of all 1-qubit quantum gates in conjunction with the controlled-NOT (CNOT) gate, which is a 2-qubit gate. Also, it has been known for some time that the SWAP gate, which implements square root of the simple 2-qubit exchange interaction, is as computationally universal as is the CNOT operation.

Quantum Computing Technology Roadmaps and Capability Assessment for Scientific Computing - An analysis of use cases from the NERSC workload

The National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC), as the high-performance computing (HPC) facility for the Department of Energy’s Office of Science, recognizes the essential role of quantum computing in its future mission. In this report, we analyze the NERSC workload and identify materials science, quantum chemistry, and high-energy physics as the science domains and application areas that stand to benefit most from quantum computers. These domains jointly make up over 50% of the current NERSC production workload, which is illustrative of the impact quantum computing could have on NERSC’s mission going forward. We perform an extensive literature review and determine the quantum resources required to solve classically intractable problems within these science domains. This review also shows that the quantum resources required have consistently decreased over time due to algorithmic improvements and a deeper understanding of the problems. At the same time, public technology roadmaps from a collection of ten quantum computing companies predict a dramatic increase in capabilities over the next five to ten years. Our analysis reveals a significant overlap emerging in this time frame between the technological capabilities and the algorithmic requirements in these three scientific domains. We anticipate that the execution time of large-scale quantum workflows will become a major performance parameter and propose a simple metric, the Sustained Quantum System Performance (SQSP), to compare system-level performance and throughput for a heterogeneous workload.

Unitary coupled cluster theory (UCC) is a common wave function ansatz for quantum simulation of molecular electronic structure using the variational quantum eigenvalue solver (VQE). Even for small molecules using a double-ζ basis, the number of variational parameters required to minimize the electronic energy (i.e., optimize the circuit) is large and beyond the reach of current quantum computers. For example, a circuit simulating C2 using the UCCSD ansatz and the cc-pVDZ basis set with frozen-core will require over 10,000 variational parameters and a Hilbert space of over 10^(8) determinants. To make progress on simulating such molecular systems on near-term quantum computers, we explore how much of the optimization can be approximately prepared with classical simulation while reducing the number of optimization steps performed on a quantum device. Recently, Chen, Cheng, and Freericks [J. Chem. Theory Comput. 2021, 17, 841-847] presented an algorithm for the factorized form of the UCC ansatz that allows for efficient UCC optimizations on classical hardware. We flip the algorithm around and use it to prepare approximate quantum circuits for systems that require a large number of qubits to represent. We will present results from our implementation and discuss strategies for incorporating this implementation for algorithms involving near-term quantum computers.

Sub-Kelvin Cooling Systems for Quantum Computers

Future large-scale quantum processors (i.e. 100s of qubits), especially those based on superconducting circuits, will require large cooling powers (~10s of microW) at very low temperatures (<50 mK) with stringent temperature stabilities to avoid quantum decoherence and thus guarantee successful operation of such systems. One attractive option for providing this cooling is through Continuous Adiabatic Demagnetization Refrigerators (CADR). Scalable state-of-the-art CADRs at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center have successfully shown to lift 6 W of heat at 50 mK with a 1 K temperature stability while rejecting its heat to a cryocooler at 4K. Carefully planned and proper heat sinking of cables, attenuators, and microwave components at various temperature stages (between 4K and base temperature) is critical in the cooling architecture of quantum computers and can be provided through proper staging of each unit within the CADR system. As an alternative method of cooling, dilution refrigerators with the potential to meet cooling requirements of emerging large-scale quantum processors are also discussed.
