STS-75 Flight Day 1

On this first day of the STS-75 mission, the flight crew, Cmdr. Andrew Allen, Pilot Scott Horowitz, Payload Cmdr. Franklin Chang-Diaz, Payload Specialist Umberto Guidoni (Italy), and Mission Specialists Jeffrey Hoffman, Maurizio Cheli (ESA) and Claude Nicollier (ESA), were shown performing pre-launch and launching activities. This international space mission's primary objective is the deployment of the Tethered Satellite System Reflight (TSS-1R) to a 12 mile length from the shuttle, a variety of experiments, and the satellite retrieval. These experiments include: Research on Orbital Plasma Electrodynamics (ROPE); TSS Deployer Core Equipment and Satellite Core Equipment (DCORE/SCORE); Research on Electrodynamic Tether Effects (RETE); Magnetic Field Experiments for TSS Missions (TEMAG); Shuttle Electrodynamic Tether Systems (SETS); Shuttle Potential and Return Electron Experiment (SPREE); Tether Optical Phenomena Experiment (TOP); and Observations at the Earth's Surface of Electromagnetic Emissions by TSS (OESSE). The mission's secondary objectives were those experiments found in the United States Microgravity Payload-3 (USMP-3), which include: Advanced Automated Directional Solidification Furnace (AADSF); Material pour l'Etude des Phenomenes Interessant la Solidification sur Terre et en Orbite (MEPHISTO); Space Acceleration Measurement System (SAMS); Orbital Acceleration Research Experiment (OARE); Critical Fluid Scattering Experiment (ZENO); and Isothermal Dendritic Growth Experiment (IDGE).

Diazo processing of LANDSAT imagery: A low-cost instructional technique

Diazo processing of LANDSAT imagery is a relatively simple and cost effective method of producing enhanced renditions of the visual LANDSAT products. This technique is capable of producing a variety of image enhancements which have value in a teaching laboratory environment. Additionally, with the appropriate equipment, applications research which relys on accurate and repeatable results is possible. Exposure and development equipment options, diazo materials, and enhancement routines are discussed.

Life sciences payload definition and integration study. Volume 1: Executive summary

The definition and integration tasks involved in the development of design concepts for a carry-on laboratory (COL), to be compatible with Spacelab operations, were divided into the following study areas: (1) identification of research and equipment requirements of the COL; (2) development of a number of conceptual layouts for COL based on the defined research of final conceptual designs; and (4) development of COL planning information for definition of COL/Spacelab interface data, cost data, and program cost schedules, including design drawings of a selected COL to permit fabrication of a functional breadboard.

Transonic-flutter Investigation of Wings Attached to Two Low-acceleration Rocket-propelled Vehicles

Two low-acceleration transonic-flutter vehicles were launched and flown. The first carried two test wings, one of which fluttered at M = 0.92 at a frequency of 61.4 cycles per second. The reference flutter speed determined from two-dimensional theory for an unswept wing in incompressible flow is conservative when compared to the experimental flutter speed. The second vehicle carried two test wings, one of which failed at M = 0.71 because of low-frequency divergent oscillation. Since this failure was not caused by conventional flexure-torsion flutter, no comparison with a reference flutter speed can be made.

Adaptive-Wall Wind Tunnel

Side vents controlled automatically to compensate for interference by walls. Improved test station for 2- by 2-Foot Adaptive-Wall Wind Tunnel at Ames Research Center equipped for automatic sensing and correction of effects of walls on airflow in vicinity of test model. New facility well suited for advanced research and development. Velocities measured along lines near model used to calculate velocities observed along lines farther from model if model were in free air. Calculated values compared with velocities measured along farther lines.
