Connector locking device

Slidable spring-loaded locking device eliminates need for safety wiring. Locking device is placed between the connector plug and connector receptacle. The threaded plug cannot vibrate loose because the insert is wedged into slots formed on the outer diameter of the receptacle.

The 15th Aerospace Mechanisms Symposium

The purpose of the symposium was to provide a forum for the interchange of information among those active in the field of mechanism technology. To that end, 27 papers were presented on aeronautics and space flight, with special emphasis on actuators and aerospace applications for pointing systems, latches, connectors, and other mechanisms for large space structures. The papers were authored by engineers from a broad aerospace spectrum including the U. S. aerospace industry, NASA, and several European participants. Technological areas covered include: aerospace propulsion; aerodynamic devices; crew safety; space vehicle control; spacecraft deployment, positioning, and pointing; deployable antennas/reflectors; and large space structures. Devices for payload deployment, payload retention, and crew extravehicular activities on the space shuttle orbiter are also described.

Directional Hearing Aid

Hearing-aid device indicates visually whether sound is coming from left, right, back, or front. Device intended to assist individuals who are deaf in at least one ear and unable to discern naturally directions to sources of sound. Device promotes safety in street traffic, on loading docks, and in presence of sirens, alarms, and other warning sounds. Quadraphonic version of device built into pair of eyeglasses and binaural version built into visor.

Two-Way Tether Gun

Safety-tether device enables crewmembers on spacecraft to retrieve crewmember drifting away from spacecraft. Alternatively, drifting crewmember who carries device uses it to grasp and return to spacecraft. Also used on Earth. For example, rescuer on vessel or pier uses it to retrieve and haul drowning or unconscious person to safety; drifting person or rescuer in water uses it to grasp and hold onto support.

Digital Device Architecture and the Safe Use of Flash Devices in Munitions

Flash technology is being utilized in fuzed munition applications and, based on the development of digital logic devices in the commercial world, usage of flash technology will increase. Digital devices of interest to designers include flash-based microcontrollers and field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). Almost a decade ago, a study was undertaken to determine if flash-based microcontrollers could be safely used in fuzes and, if so, how should such devices be applied. The results were documented in the Technical Manual for the Use of Logic Devices in Safety Features. This paper will first review the Technical Manual and discuss the rationale behind the suggested architectures for microcontrollers and a brief review of the concern about data retention in flash cells. An architectural feature in the microcontroller under study will be discussed and its use will show how to screen for weak or failed cells during manufacture, storage, or immediately prior to use. As was done for microcontrollers a decade ago, architectures for a flash-based FPGA will be discussed, showing how it can be safely used in fuzes. Additionally, architectures for using non-volatile (including flash-based) storage will be discussed for SRAM-based FPGAs.

Radiation Data Portal: Connection of Radiation Measurements on Airplane Flights with Observations of Solar-Terrestrial Environment

The impact of solar radiation dramatically increases at high altitudes in the Earth’s atmosphere and in space. Therefore, continuous monitoring of the radiation environment is critical for the safety of aircraft and spacecraft crews and passengers. Addressing the problem requires a complex approach of integration of different data sources and enhancement of the visualization and search capabilities. The Radiation Portal Database represents an interactive web-based application for convenient search and visualization of in-flight radiation measurements and exploration of various properties related to the radiation environment. The primary element of the Radiation Portal back-end is a MySQL relational database that currently contains the radiation measurements obtained from the Automated Radiation Measurements for Aerospace Safety (ARMAS)device, and soft X-ray and proton fluxes from Geostationary Orbiting Environmental Satellite (GOES). The developed Application Programming Interface (API) and related Python routines allow a user to retrieve the database records directly and efficiently, without interaction with the web interface. As a use case of the Radiation Portal, we examine the properties of the ARMAS flights taken during the enhanced Solar Proton (SP) fluxes and compare them to the flights of similar time and location taken during SP-quiet periods.

Organizational Culture and Safety

'..only a fool perseveres in error.' Cicero. Humans will break the most advanced technological devices and override safety and security systems if they are given the latitude. Within the workplace, the operator may be just one of several factors in causing accidents or making risky decisions. Other variables considered for their involvement in the negative and often catastrophic outcomes include the organizational context and culture. Many organizations have constructed and implemented safety programs to be assimilated into their culture to assure employee commitment and understanding of the importance of everyday safety. The purpose of this paper is to examine literature on organizational safety cultures and programs that attempt to combat vulnerability, risk taking behavior and decisions and identify the role of training in attempting to mitigate unsafe acts.

Apollo Spacecraft and Saturn V Launch Vehicle Pyrotechnics/Explosive Devices

The Apollo Mission employs more than 210 pyrotechnic devices per mission. These devices are either automatic of commanded from the Apollo spacecraft systems. All devices require high reliability and safety and most are classified as either crew safety critical or mission critical. Pyrotechnic devices have a wide variety of applications including: launch escape tower separation, separation rocket ignition, parachute deployment and release and electrical circuit opening and closing. This viewgraph presentation identifies critical performance, design requirements and safety measures used to ensure quality, reliability and performance of Apollo pyrotechnic/explosive devices. The major components and functions of a typical Apollo pyrotechnic/explosive device are listed and described (initiators, cartridge assemblies, detonators, core charges). The presentation also identifies the major locations and uses for the devices on: the Command and Service Module, Lunar Module and all stages of the launch vehicle.
