Analytical Functions for 200 West Pump-and-Treat SCADA Sensor Data

Historical operations at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Hanford Site included disposal of waste fluids to the subsurface in the 200 West Area on the Hanford Central Plateau. Subsequent infiltration of fluids has resulted in groundwater contamination with carbon tetrachloride, nitrate, uranium, technetium-99, and other contaminants. A pump-and-treat (P&T) system, with an extraction/injection well network and an aboveground treatment plant, was implemented as part of interim and final remedies in the 200 West area. The HYPATIA single-page web application (part of the SOCRATES suite) is being developed to provide access to and analysis of chemistry and treatment facility sensor data for this 200 West P&T system. For the web application, analytical algorithms were developed to perform summing, differencing, smoothing, outlier detection, change-point detection, mass flow rate, and injectivity calculations on the data. Candidate algorithms were identified and tested, with the best-performing algorithms then assembled for implementation in HYPATIA. Because HYPATIA is hosted on the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud computing platform, algorithms were implemented in a back-end AWS Lambda function that can be called by the HYPATIA front end. The Lambda function applies the requested data processing to specified data via functions written in R, Python, and JavaScript. Development, testing, and review of the data analysis algorithms was completed under an NQA-1 quality program. This new HYPATIA functionality will provide information to support site decisions regarding P&T system performance and optimization.

At LANL, I have had the privilege and pleasure of working with Dr. Tika Kafle, an optics and condensed matter physicist at the MagLab in TA-35. Dr. Kafle’s research primarily involves the Angle Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy (ARPES) technique of characterizing materials. More specifically, Dr. Kafle works with Time Resolved ARPES (Tr-ARPES), which extends this technique into the time domain.

Identification of a Fusarium ear rot resistance gene in maize by QTL mapping and RNA sequencing

Fusarium ear rot (FER) caused by Fusarium verticillioides is a prevalent maize disease. To comprehensively characterize the genetic basis of the natural variation in FER resistance, a recombinant inbred line (RIL) population was used to map quantitative trait loci (QTL) for FER resistance. A total of 17 QTL were identified by linkage mapping in eight environments. These QTL were located on six chromosomes and explained 3.88–15.62% of the total phenotypic variation. Moreover, qFER1.03 had the strongest effect and accounted for 4.98–15.62% of the phenotypic variation according to analyses of multiple environments involving best linear unbiased predictions. The chromosome segment substitution lines (CSSLs) derived from a cross between Qi319 (donor parent) and Ye478 (recurrent parent) were used to verify the contribution of qFER1.03 to FER resistance. The line CL171, which harbored an introgressed qFER1.03 , was significantly resistant to FER. Further fine mapping of qFER1.03 revealed that the resistance QTL was linked to insertion/deletion markers InDel 8 and InDel 2, with physical distances of 43.55 Mb and 43.76 Mb, respectively. Additionally, qFER1.03 differed from the previous resistance QTL on chromosome 1. There were three annotated genes in this region. On the basis of the RNA-seq data, which revealed the genes differentially expressed between the FER-resistant Qi319 and susceptible Ye478, GRMZM2G017792 (MPK3) was preliminarily identified as a candidate gene in the qFER1.03 region. The Pr-CMV-VIGS system was used to decrease the GRMZM2G017792 expression level in CL171 by 34–57%, which led to a significant decrease in FER resistance. Using RIL and CSSL populations combined with RNA-seq and Pr-CMV-VIGS, the candidate gene can be dissected effectively, which provided important gene resource for breeding FER-resistant varieties.

Radiological Degradation of Tetraoctyl Diglycolamide in n-Alkyl Solvents: Influence of Solvent Ionization Potential

Reprocessing of used nuclear fuel reduces the requirements for long-term storage repositories. Cost-efficient processes depend on knowledge of radiation effects, but gaps occur in understanding how radiation results in the degradation of fuel separation molecules. This project investigates the influence of different n-alkyl solvents on the radiolytic fragmentation behavior of N,N,N',N'-Tetraoctyl-3-oxapentane-1,5-diamide (TODGA), a promising ligand for extraction of the lanthanides and minor actinides from dissolved nuclear fuel. Findings from this work suggest a linkage between the ionization potential of the solvent and the degradation products observed in the resulting mass spectrum.

Neutronics analysis of Full Size Plate–1 Experiment using MC21

Qualification and testing of Low Enriched Uranium fuel is desired so that it can be used in research reactors instead of High Enriched Uranium. The Full Size Plate - 1 (FSP-1) experiment involves irradiating a low enriched metallic fuel in the Advanced Test Reactor to assist in this general qualification. Prior to irradiation, an in-depth neutronics analysis is needed to ensure the safety requirements of the Advanced Test Reactor are met. To accomplish this, the MC21 software was used to analyze the FSP-1 experiment, which will allow a test run to be performed with this new fuel in the Advanced Test Reactor Critical facility. By verifying and validating the results of the MC21 software with comparisons to other codes and the preliminary irradiation in the Advanced Test Reactor Critical facility, the FSP-1 experiment will be ready to irradiate using the Advanced Test Reactor. This work is concerned with the neutronics analysis of the FSP-1 experiment using the MC21 software.

Poster: Hardware-Based Demonstration of Temperature Control Functions for Reactor Systems

Autonomous thermal regulation in nuclear reactors remains crucial for maintaining stable operation and ensuring the integrity of fuel. To alleviate public skepticism of the safety of nuclear reactors, demonstrating control over this key factor is pivotal. Utilizing electric heat pads to simulate the heat released in a reactor core, thermocouples for temperature monitoring, and an Arduino micro programmable logic controller (PLC) with an embedded proportional-integral-derivative (PID) algorithm for control, a hardware-based demonstration of a reactor heating system will validate the efficacy of reactor control over this key parameter.
