Heat Shields for Aerogravity Assist Vehicles Whose Deceleration at Titan Saves Mass for Future Flagship Class Exploration of Enceladus

A mission of great Astrobiological interest is one that would search for life signatures associated with the oceans and geysers of Enceladus [1]. Spilker et al., [2] have shown in a 2009 paper that use of an Aerogravity Assist (AGA) maneuver with a blunt body in Titan’s atmosphere could enable a Flagship Class Mission to Enceladus within reasonable cost ($3 B) and mission duration (14 years). This paper will summarize the 2023 Decadal Survey (DS) Whitepaper by Arnold, et al. [3] that estimated heat shield masses for an AGA vehicle whose deceleration in Titan’s atmosphere saves mass for future missions to explore Enceladus. This study focused on Titan AGA for an Enceladus lander corresponding to mission “E” in the Spilker, et al. paper [2]. The analysis is the first reported for heat shield requirements for an AGA aeroshell that accounts for the convective and radiation heating arising from flight in Titan’s atmosphere.

Cost savings through multimission code reuse for Mars image products

An overview of the library's design will be presented, along with mission adaptation experiences and lessons learned, and the kinds of additional functionality that have been added while still retaining its multimission character. The application programs using the library will also be briefly described.

Connector for thermocouple leads saves costly wire, makes reliable connectors

A connector for use in the thermocouple circuits which is silver-brazed to the metal thermocouple sheath on one end and crimped over the insulation of the flexible lead on the other, assures protection against breakage and abrasion. A moisture-proof insulating material is used to encapsulate the wire junctions.

Space-saving hoist for tank manholes

Working platform and collapsible basket facilitate entry of men with equipment into the overhead manhole of a deep tank. A winch and pulley rigging hold the basket which is suspended in the manhole. The basket is suspended at three points without the rig impinging on the area of the manhole.

Disc pack cleaning table saves computer time

Disc pack holding table is support frame upon which computer disc pack is loaded and protective cover released. This combination permits manual off-line cleaning of disc pack storage units at any time without shutting down the computer, and eliminates on-line disc drive unit to hold pack during cleaning.

Digital decorrelator saves time and expense in acoustic testing of structures

Instantaneous signals from coherent random sound field are summed and time delayed to avoid introducing vectorial addition errors. Resultant statistically independent signals are applied to spectrometer. Displayed sound pressure level is proportional to square root of sum of squares of sound pressure levels taken over frequency range of interest.

Saving Skylab

Initial difficulties encountered with the launch and operational deployment of the Skylab vehicle are described in terms of early indications of hardware failures, ground-based efforts at diagnosing the nature and significance of damage, and organization of improvized means and procedures for repair operations. Attention is given to heating and power-supply problems stemming from the loss of a micrometeoroid shield and a solar cell array. Systems engineering problems arising from the necessity of achieving a compromise among thermal, electrical, and stabilization requirements are explained, and repair solutions and operations in space and on the ground are described in detail.-

Ground testing and simulation. II - Aerodynamic testing and simulation: Saving lives, time, and money

The present work discusses in general terms the various kinds of ground facilities, in particular, wind tunnels, which support aerodynamic testing. Since not all flight parameters can be simulated simultaneously, an important problem consists in matching parameters. It is pointed out that there is a lack of wind tunnels for a complete Reynolds-number simulation. Using a computer to simulate flow fields can result in considerable reduction of wind-tunnel hours required to develop a given flight vehicle.

Cost saving synergistic shaft seal

Segmented carbon rings, used to replace elastomeric seal lip, provide resistance to high temperatures generated in lubricating film. Machining and close manufacturing tolerances of conventional segmented seal are avoided by mounting segmented rings in elastomeric flex section.

Save power in AC induction motors

Relatively simple and inexpensive circuitry improves power factor and reduces power dissipation in induction motors operating below full load. Electronic control loop conserves energy by reducing voltage applied to lightly loaded motor. Circuit forces motor to run at constant predetermined optimum power factor, regardless of load or line voltage variations. Solid-state switch varies voltage.

Computation-saving digital filter

Two stage digital low-pass filter circuit that averages input over given period and filters average over comparatively slow rate, reduces computation, speed, and word-length requirements. Applications include data preprocessing before entry to central processor.

Energy-saving thermostat

Thermostat for two-stage heating system adjusts turn-on time and thermostat setpoint so that reserve resistance electrical heaters are not activated in morning warm up. Thermostat monitors outside temperature and turns on heat earlier in cold weather so that room will be at desired temperature by specified time. Mechanical, electrical, electronic, pneumatic, or microprocessor versions of device are possible. Correctional factors can be included where second-stage operation is more cost-effective than prolonged first-stage operation.
