Formation of phosphorus monoxide through the $$\mathbf {P}(^{4}S)+\mathbf {O}_{\mathbf {2}}(^{3}\Sigma ^{-})\rightarrow \mathbf {O}(^{3}P)+\mathbf {PO}(^{2}\Pi )$$ reaction

Phosphorus is a key and vital element for a diverse set of important biological molecules, being indispensable for life as we know. A deeper comprehension of its role in astrochemistry and atmospheric chemistry may aid in finding answers to how this element became available on Earth. The PO molecule is one of the main reservoirs of phosphorus in the interstellar medium (ISM), and a better understanding of the mechanisms and rate coefficients for its formation in the ISM is important for modelling its abundances. Here in this work, we perform multireference configuration interaction calculations on the formation of PO via the P( 4 S) + O 2 (3 Σ - ) reaction, analyzing its potential energy surface and rate coefficients for the global reaction on both doublet and quartet states. We also perform DFT (M06-2X) and CCSD(T) calculations, in order to compare the results. We found that the OPO system possesses a high multiconfigurational character, making DFT and CCSD methodologies not suitable for its potential energy landscape calculation. The rate coefficients have been calculated using the master equation system solver (MESS) package, and the results compared to recent experimental data. It is shown that the quartet state contributes for temperatures higher than 700K. The computed rate coefficient can be described by a modified Arrhenius equation [α(T/300) β exp (-γ/T)] with α = 1.44 x 10 -12 cm 3 s -1 , β= -1.66 and γ= 704 K.

Universality of a truncated sigma-model

Bosonic quantum field theories, even when regularized using a finite lattice, possess an infinite dimensional Hilbert space and, therefore, cannot be simulated in quantum computers with a finite number of qubits. A truncation of the Hilbert space is then needed and the physical results are obtained after a double limit: one to remove the truncation and another to remove the regulator (the continuum limit). A simpler alternative is to find a model with a finite dimensional Hilbert space belonging to the same universality class as the continuum model (a “qubitization”), so only the space continuum limit is required. A qubitization of the 1 + 1 dimensional asymptotically free O(3) nonlinear σ-model based on ideas of non-commutative geometry was previously proposed [1] and, in this paper, we provide evidence that it reproduces the physics of the σ-model both in the infrared and the ultraviolet regimes.

Theory of sigma bond resonance in flat boron materials

Abstract In chemistry, theory of aromaticity or π bond resonance plays a central role in intuitively understanding the stability and properties of organic molecules. Here we present an analogue theory for σ bond resonance in flat boron materials, which allows us to determine the distribution of two-center two-electron and three-center two-electron bonds without quantum calculations. Based on this theory, three rules are proposed to draw the Kekulé-like bonding configurations for flat boron materials and to explore their properties intuitively. As an application of the theory, a simple explanation of why neutral borophene with ~1/9 hole has the highest stability and the effect of charge doping on borophene’s optimal hole concentration is provided with the assumption of σ and π orbital occupation balance. Like the aromaticity theory for carbon materials, this theory greatly deepens our understanding on boron materials and paves the way for the rational design of various boron-based materials.

Light baryon resonances from a coupled-channel study including $$\mathbf {K\Sigma }$$ photoproduction

The Jülich-Bonn dynamical coupled-channel approach is extended to include KΣ photoproduction off the proton. Differential cross section and (double) polarization data for K + Σ 0 and K 0 Σ + are analysed simultaneously with the pion- and photon-induced production of πN, ηN, KΛ, and KΣ final states, totaling almost 72,000 data points for center-of-mass energies W<2.4 GeV. Based on the fit results the spectrum of N * and Δ resonances is extracted in terms of pole positions and residues. We discuss the impact of the γp→KΣ channels in detail and investigate the influence of recent polarization data for ηp photoproduction.

Elastic differential cross-section ${\mathrm{d}}\sigma /{\mathrm{d}}t$ at $\sqrt{s}=2.76\hbox {TeV}$ and implications on the existence of a colourless C-odd three-gluon compound state

The proton-proton elastic differential cross section dσ/dt has been measured by the TOTEM experiment at √ s = 2.76 TeV energy with β* = 11 m beam optics. The Roman Pots were inserted to 13 times the transverse beam size from the beam, which allowed to measure the differential cross-section of elastic scattering in a range of the squared four-momentum transfer (|t|) from 0.36 GeV 2 to 0.74 GeV 2 . The differential cross-section can be described with an exponential in the |t|-range between 0.36 and 0.54 GeV 2 , followed by a diffractive minimum (dip) at |t dip | = (0.61 ± 0.03) GeV 2 and a subsequent maximum (bump). The ratio of the dσ/dt at the bump and at the dip is 1.7±0.2. When compared to the proton–antiproton measurement of the D0 experiment at √ s = 1.96 TeV, a significant difference can be observed. Under the condition that the effects due to the energy difference between TOTEM and D0 can be neglected, the result provides evidence for a colourless C-odd three-gluon bound state exchange in the t-channel of the proton-proton and proton–antiproton elastic scattering.

$\Sigma (1385)^{\pm }$ resonance production in Pb–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} = 5.02$ TeV

Hadronic resonances are used to probe the hadron gas produced in the late stage of heavy-ion collisions since they decay on the same timescale, of the order of 1–10 fm/c, as the decoupling time of the system. In the hadron gas, (pseudo)elastic scatterings among the products of resonances that decayed before the kinetic freeze-out and regeneration processes counteract each other, the net effect depending on the resonance lifetime, the duration of the hadronic phase, and the hadronic cross sections at play. In this context, the Σ(1385) ± particle is of particular interest as models predict that regeneration dominates over rescattering despite its relatively short lifetime of about 5.5 fm/c. The first measurement of the Σ(1385) ± resonance production at midrapidity in Pb–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=5.02 TeV with the ALICE detector is presented in this Letter. The resonances are reconstructed via their hadronic decay channel, Λπ, as a function of the transverse momentum (p T ) and the collision centrality. The results are discussed in comparison with the measured yield of pions and with expectations from the statistical hadronization model as well as commonly employed event generators, including PYTHIA8/Angantyr and EPOS3 coupled to the UrQMD hadronic cascade afterburner. None of the models can describe the data. For Σ(1385) ± , a similar behaviour as K*(892) 0 is observed in data unlike the predictions of EPOS3 with afterburner.

Surface Impedance of Nb$_3$Sn and YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-\sigma}$ in High Magnetic Fields

New potential rf applications of superconductors emerged with the need to operate in high dc magnetic fields (up to 16 T) where vortex motion dictates the response: the beam screen coating of the Future Circular Collider (FCC) [1] and haloscopes, i.e. rf cavities for the axions detection [2]. However, very few data are available in the required regimes. We present in this work measurements of the surface impedance Z up to 12 T on bulk Nb₃Sn and YBCO thin films grown by different techniques. The measurements are performed with a dielectric loaded resonator operating at 15 GHz. We obtained the vortex motion resistivity and extracted the high frequency vortex motion parameters [3]: the depinning frequency, the flux-flow resistivity and the pinning constant, as well as their temperature and field dependences. Substantial differences are highlighted in the high frequency pinning properties of the studied materials, providing useful information on possible improvements in view of applications. A comparison with the results obtained in the microwave frequency range at lower fields (up to 1 T) is given.
