International interface design for Space Station Freedom - Challenges and solutions

The definition of interfaces for the International Space Station is discussed, with a focus on negotiations between NASA and ESA. The program organization and division of responsibilities for the Space Station are outlined; the basic features of physical and functional interfaces are described; and particular attention is given to the interface management and documentation procedures, architectural control elements, interface implementation and verification, and examples of Columbus interface solutions (including mechanical, ECLSS, thermal-control, electrical, data-management, standardized user, and software interfaces). Diagrams, drawings, graphs, and tables listing interface types are provided.

The ORNL-SNAP shielding program

The effort in the ORNL-SNAP shielding program is directed toward the development and verification of computer codes using numerical solutions to the transport equation for the design of optimized radiation shields for SNAP power systems. A brief discussion is given for the major areas of the SNAP shielding program, which are cross-section development, transport code development, and integral experiments. Detailed results are presented for the integral experiments utilizing the TSF-SNAP reactor. Calculated results are compared with experiments for neutron and gamma-ray spectra from the bare reactor and as transmitted through slab shields.

Towards High-Assurance High-Performance Program Synthesis

Domain-specific automatic program synthesis tools, also called application generators, are playing an ever-increasing role in software development. However, high-performance application generators require difficult manual construction, and are very difficult to verify correct. This paper describes research and an implemented system that transforms program synthesis tools based on deductive synthesis into high-performance application generators. Deductive synthesis uses theorem-proving to construct solutions when given problem specifications. The verification condition for a deductive synthesis tool is essentially the soundness of the implemented inference rules. Theory Operationalization for Program Synthesis (TOPS) synergistically combines reformulation, automated mathematical classification, and compilation through partial deduction to decision procedures. It transforms general-purpose deductive synthesis, with exponential performance, into efficient special-purpose deductive synthesis, with near-linear performance. This paper describes our experience with and empirical results of PD(TH) theory-based partial deduction - in which partial deduction of a set of first-order formulae is performed within the context of a background theory. The implemented TOPS system currently performs a special variant of PD(TH) in which the compilation process results in the transformation of a set of first order formulae into the theory of an instantiated library decision procedure augmented by a compiled unit theory.

Extraction-Separation Performance and Dynamic Modeling of Orion Test Vehicles with Adams Simulation: 3rd Edition

NASA's Orion Capsule Parachute Assembly System (CPAS) Project is now in the qualification phase of testing, and the Adams simulation has continued to evolve to model the complex dynamics experienced during the test article extraction and separation phases of flight. The ability to initiate tests near the upper altitude limit of the Orion parachute deployment envelope requires extractions from the aircraft at 35,000 ft-MSL. Engineering development phase testing of the Parachute Test Vehicle (PTV) carried by the Carriage Platform Separation System (CPSS) at altitude resulted in test support equipment hardware failures due to increased energy caused by higher true airspeeds. As a result, hardware modifications became a necessity requiring ground static testing of the textile components to be conducted and a new ground dynamic test of the extraction system to be devised. Force-displacement curves from static tests were incorporated into the Adams simulations, allowing prediction of loads, velocities and margins encountered during both flight and ground dynamic tests. The Adams simulation was then further refined by fine tuning the damping terms to match the peak loads recorded in the ground dynamic tests. The failure observed in flight testing was successfully replicated in ground testing and true safety margins of the textile components were revealed. A multi-loop energy modulator was then incorporated into the system level Adams simulation model and the effect on improving test margins be properly evaluated leading to high confidence ground verification testing of the final design solution.

Automated Contingency Management for Water Recycling System

To enable effective management, planning, and operations for future missions that involve a crewed space habitat, operational support must be migrated from Earth to the habitat. Intelligent System Health Management technologies (ISHM) promise to enable the future space habitats to increase the safety and mission success while minimizing operational risks. In this paper, Water Recycling System (WRS) deployed at NASA Ames Research Center's Sustainability Base is used for verification and validation of the proposed solution. Our work includes the development of the WRS simulation model based on its dynamic physical characteristics and the design of Automatic Contingency Management (ACM) framework that integrates fault diagnosis and optimization. In WRS modeling, a nominal model with fault injectors is developed. Fault detection and isolation techniques are then developed for isolating causes and identifying the severity of the faults. Dynamic Programming (DP) based fault mitigation strategies are designed to accommodate the faults in the system. A series of simulations are presented with different fault modes and the results indicate that the proposed ACM system can alleviate the fault in the WRS optimally regarding energy consumption and effects of the fault.

A Deformed Geometry Synthesis Technique for Determining Stacking and Cryogenically Induced Preloads for the Space Launch System

The Space Launch System (SLS) stacking and Core Stage (CS) fueling induce significant preloads that contribute to the liftoff pad separation “twang”. To accurately capture this, an approach is required that can replicate the physics of all SLS physical stacking steps, CS cryogenic shrinkage, associated geometric nonlinearities, and the transient behavior and decay of the preloads with changing boundary conditions as the vehicle separates from the pad. The Deformed Geometry Synthesis (DGS) approach presented here satisfies the above requirements. DGS determines induced preloads by modeling components in their deformed geometry states and then enforcing compatibility by closing the resulting “deadbands”. DGS seamlessly integrates into the multibody modal synthesis framework and does not require the use of artificial external loads to enforce preloads or post-processing steps to remove their influence. Since DGS iterates to solve for the deformed state inclusive of geometric nonlinearities, running linearized parametrics to exercise different potential orientations of ball jointed struts that connect the CS to Boosters for cryo-shrinkage analyses is entirely avoided. Relative to the transient behavior and decay of stacking and cryo-induced preloads with SLS liftoff pad separation, this is an area of considerable interest to the SLS program. To capture this in the most accurate way possible, DGS algorithms are designed to work with Henkel-Mar nonlinear pad separation algorithms which operate on the separating longitudinal and lateral degrees of freedom (DoFs) between the vehicle and the pad. As the separating DoFs release, in whatever manner as dictated by the interface geometries, interface loads and interface flexibilities as well as the external loading on the vehicle, the subject preloads generate a complex twang/decay time-trace as dictated by the physics of the problem. This paper presents DGS numerical verification against the closed-form solution for Timoshenko’s 3 ball-jointed strut preload problem. This problem is then extended by the authors to the geometric nonlinear case where DGS is compared to the Newton-Raphson solution of the nonlinear equations. Next, DGS is utilized to solve the SLS stacking and cryogenic shrinkage coupled loads analyses. Finally, Henkel-Mar pad separation simulations are executed that isolate the impact of the induced preloads’ twang and decay characteristics.

Challenges in the Verification of Reinforcement Learning Algorithms

Machine learning (ML) is increasingly being applied to a wide array of domains from search engines to autonomous vehicles. These algorithms, however, are notoriously complex and hard to verify. This work looks at the assumptions underlying machine learning algorithms as well as some of the challenges in trying to verify ML algorithms. Furthermore, we focus on the specific challenges of verifying reinforcement learning algorithms. These are highlighted using a specific example. Ultimately, we do not offer a solution to the complex problem of ML verification, but point out possible approaches for verification and interesting research opportunities.

High-Fidelity CFD Verification Workshop 2024 Summary: Spalart-Allmaras QCR2000-R Turbulence Model

This paper summarizes solutions submitted for the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) test suite of the High-Fidelity CFD Verification Workshop. The goal of the workshop is to establish standards for verification of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approaches to simulations of steady and unsteady turbulent flows. The RANS verification studies focus on a one-equation Spalart-Allmaras model with quadratic constitutive relation and rotation correction, SA-neg-QCR2000-R. The verification test cases are a two-dimensional subsonic flow around a Joukowski airfoil, a three-dimensional subsonic flow around an extruded NACA 0012 wing in a tunnel, and a subsonic flow around a wing-body configuration developed for verification of solvers participating in the 5 𝑡 ℎ High-Lift Prediction Workshop. The turbulencemodel formulation, geometry, flow conditions, grids, and reference solutions are described in detail. Solutions for the test cases are computed by seven established CFD solvers on adaptedand fixed-grid families using different discretization approaches. While some noticeable differences between solutions remain, the results achieved by contributing solvers show that different solutions computed for the same RANS model on different grid families can converge to a common limit with grid refinement. The apparent requirements for grid convergence are a well designed family of grids that provide sufficient resolution in important areas and a strong solver capable of deep iterative convergence on each grid. For each test case in the study, the variation between aerodynamic forces computed by different solvers on the finest grids of different families is less than 2%.

Verification of elastic-wave static displacement in solids

The solution of the nonlinear differential equation which describes an initially sinusoidal finite-amplitude elastic wave propagating in a solid contains a static-displacement term in addition to the harmonic terms. The static-displacement amplitude is theoretically predicted to be proportional to the product of the squares of the driving-wave amplitude and the driving-wave frequency. The first experimental verification of the elastic-wave static displacement in a solid (the 111 direction of single-crystal germanium) is reported, and agreement is found with the theoretical predictions.

Space System Verification Approach Based on MEAL and Mission Risk Posture

There is no "one size fits all" solution for verifying space avionics systems to ensure safety and mission success. This paper presents a verification approach based on MEAL and risk posture for space systems. MEAL refers to Mission, mission Environment, Application, and Lifetime of the application. In addition to the description of the verification approach, the paper also provides the awareness of the different levels of risks associated with verification tests and inspections when performed at part-, board- and box-level, and discusses the applications of the approach for flight heritage verification, commercial off the shelf (COTS) verification and radiation-effects verification.

Gas-Liquid Supersonic Cleaning and Cleaning Verification Spray System

NASA Kennedy Space Center (KSC) recently entered into a nonexclusive license agreement with Applied Cryogenic Solutions (ACS), Inc. (Galveston, TX) to commercialize its Gas-Liquid Supersonic Cleaning and Cleaning Verification Spray System technology. This technology, developed by KSC, is a critical component of processes being developed and commercialized by ACS to replace current mechanical and chemical cleaning and descaling methods used by numerous industries. Pilot trials on heat exchanger tubing components have shown that the ACS technology provides for: Superior cleaning in a much shorter period of time. Lower energy and labor requirements for cleaning and de-scaling uper.ninih. Significant reductions in waste volumes by not using water, acidic or basic solutions, organic solvents, or nonvolatile solid abrasives as components in the cleaning process. Improved energy efficiency in post-cleaning heat exchanger operations. The ACS process consists of a spray head containing supersonic converging/diverging nozzles, a source of liquid gas; a novel, proprietary pumping system that permits pumping liquid nitrogen, liquid air, or supercritical carbon dioxide to pressures in the range of 20,000 to 60,000 psi; and various hoses, fittings, valves, and gauges. The size and number of nozzles can be varied so the system can be built in configurations ranging from small hand-held spray heads to large multinozzle cleaners. The system also can be used to verify if a part has been adequately cleaned.

Recent Progress on Rans-Based Transition Model Verification

The current efforts to assess and improve the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS)-coupled transition models in the NASA FUN3D and OVERFLOW codes are summarized in this study. The first AIAA Transition Modeling Workshop and the NATO AVT-313 Transition Workshop both emphasized the need for code verification for transport equations based transition models as a top priority. We discuss the methods used for the model verification, the resulting grid families, the flow solutions, and other supporting information collected with at least two established NASA flow solvers, namely, FUN3D and OVERFLOW. These results, which will be uploaded onto the NASA Turbulence Modeling Resource, should assist other members of the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) community in verifying their own implementations of various transition models, such as the Langtry-Menter (LM2009) model, the one-equation γ model, and Coder’s amplification factor transport (AFT) model. Grid convergence is assessed using both global and local flow metrics of interest such as lift and drag as well as local skin-friction coefficients. We also explore the anisotropic unstructured metric-based adaptive mesh refinement library known as refine with the NASA FUN3D solver to determine if this capability can achieve the same accuracy as handcrafted structured grids with a significantly smaller node count and to learn the characteristics of the resulting grid distribution, especially in the vicinity of the transition zone.

Stratway: A Modular Approach to Strategic Conflict Resolution

In this paper we introduce Stratway, a modular approach to finding long-term strategic resolutions to conflicts between aircraft. The modular approach provides both advantages and disadvantages. Our primary concern is to investigate the implications on the verification of safety-critical properties of a strategic resolution algorithm. By partitioning the problem into verifiable modules much stronger verification claims can be established. Since strategic resolution involves searching for solutions over an enormous state space, Stratway, like most similar algorithms, searches these spaces by applying heuristics, which present especially difficult verification challenges. An advantage of a modular approach is that it makes a clear distinction between the resolution function and the trajectory generation function. This allows the resolution computation to be independent of any particular vehicle. The Stratway algorithm was developed in both Java and C++ and is available through a open source license. Additionally there is a visualization application that is helpful when analyzing and quickly creating conflict scenarios.

High-Lift Prediction Workshop 5: Summary of Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes Technology Focus Group Summary

The fifth High-Lift Prediction Workshop (HLPW-5), which involved the high-lift version of the NASA common research model in several configurations, assessed various computational fluid dynamics methods, including Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) and hybrid large-eddy simulations. This paper summarizes RANS solutions computed on fixed grids. Case 1, a verification case, considered a simple wing-body configuration and focused on grid convergence of lift, drag, and pitching moment coefficients. Case 2 is a configuration buildup case that focused on predicting the effects of increasing geometric complexity. For buildup configurations with slats, flaps, and a nacelle/pylon (configurations 2.2, 2.3, and 2.4), wind-tunnel data were provided by ONERA. Case 3 focused on the reference landing configuration at four Reynolds-number conditions. For Case 1, grid-converged RANS solutions were achieved using the standard Spalart-Allmaras (SA) turbulence model and the SA model with a quadratic constitutive relation and a rotation correction. Agreement between RANS solutions was observed for the simplest configuration 2.1 of Case 2 with the standard SA model. For other configurations, agreement between RANS solutions was hampered by insufficient iterative and grid convergence, especially at high angles of attack. In comparison with the experiment, RANS solutions qualitatively showed the correct configuration buildup trend but underpredicted lift and overpredicted both drag and pitching moment at high angles of attack.

Computational control of flexible aerospace systems

The main objective of this project is to establish a distributed parameter modeling technique for structural analysis, parameter estimation, vibration suppression and control synthesis of large flexible aerospace structures. This report concentrates on the research outputs produced in the last two years. The main accomplishments can be summarized as follows. A new version of the PDEMOD Code had been completed based on several incomplete versions. The verification of the code had been conducted by comparing the results with those examples for which the exact theoretical solutions can be obtained. The theoretical background of the package and the verification examples has been reported in a technical paper submitted to the Joint Applied Mechanics & Material Conference, ASME. A brief USER'S MANUAL had been compiled, which includes three parts: (1) Input data preparation; (2) Explanation of the Subroutines; and (3) Specification of control variables. Meanwhile, a theoretical investigation of the NASA MSFC two-dimensional ground-based manipulator facility by using distributed parameter modeling technique has been conducted. A new mathematical treatment for dynamic analysis and control of large flexible manipulator systems has been conceived, which may provide an embryonic form of a more sophisticated mathematical model for future modified versions of the PDEMOD Codes.

HDL to verification logic translator

The increasingly higher number of transistors possible in VLSI circuits compounds the difficulty in insuring correct designs. As the number of possible test cases required to exhaustively simulate a circuit design explodes, a better method is required to confirm the absence of design faults. Formal verification methods provide a way to prove, using logic, that a circuit structure correctly implements its specification. Before verification is accepted by VLSI design engineers, the stand alone verification tools that are in use in the research community must be integrated with the CAD tools used by the designers. One problem facing the acceptance of formal verification into circuit design methodology is that the structural circuit descriptions used by the designers are not appropriate for verification work and those required for verification lack some of the features needed for design. We offer a solution to this dilemma: an automatic translation from the designers' HDL models into definitions for the higher-ordered logic (HOL) verification system. The translated definitions become the low level basis of circuit verification which in turn increases the designer's confidence in the correctness of higher level behavioral models.
