Futureproofing through 2035 for the AI and HPC Power Density Trend

HPC and AI are businesses necessitating growth for providing performance improvement with increased power and cooling. As HPC and AI computers and their supporting facilities approach utility scale with a frequency of technology innovation outpacing utility and construction timelines, understanding and designing for this trend has become critical. This paper will provide historical trend data for facilities and compute racks, relate power trend data to cooling technology capabilities, and reason through constraints impacting anticipated future power densities to aid the reader in futureproofing a facility’s power and cooling systems through the mid-2030’s.

LES ARM Symbiotic Simulation and Observation Scenario for CACTI

The Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Symbiotic Simulation and Observation (LASSO) deep-convection scenario for the Cloud, Aerosol, and Complex Terrain Interactions (CACTI) field campaign. The LASSO-CACTI scenario consists of a library of mesoscale and LES simulations spanning grid spacings from 7.5 km to 100 m for convection near the Sierras de Córdoba mountain range, roughly centered on the ARM Mobile Facility. Supporting skill scores and observation comparisons complement the simulations in addition to subsets of the model output for various categories of model output variables. More information can be found at https://www.arm.gov/capabilities/modeling/lasso.

Non-Nuclear Test Facility Development to Support Verification and Validation Needs

This study focuses on developing a non-nuclear test facility to help meet the verification and validation (V&V) requirements of a water-cooled small modular reactor (SMR) system. The scaling analysis necessary for reactor system experimentation and assessment model V&V considers various reactor system accident scenarios such as main steam line break (MSLB), steam generator tube rupture (SGTR), and containment condensation and heat transfer. The goal is to identify key physics based phenomena of interest (POI), specific figures of merit (FOMs), and the state of knowledge (SOK) by employing phenomena identification and ranking table (PIRT) studies. Important physics phenomena such as heat transfer, fluid dynamics, structural integrity, and material selection must be addressed when scaling a thermal-hydraulics system. Alongside these considerations, modifications to the facility may be needed to align the scaled system with the available footprint (height and space) of the facility. These modifications may include infrastructure upgrades, changes to the piping layout, implementation of safety measures, and installation of new instrumentation and control systems. The test facility aims to provide a scaled-down version of prototypic facilities for comprehensive V&V activities by overcoming these challenges and making the necessary modifications. This approach minimizes scaling distortion, simulates prototypic plant conditions, and accurately models accident event progressions. Thus, the facility will be capable of adequately modeling a scaled SMR system to support the design, development and licensing needs.

Collaborative Computing Support for Analysis Facilities Exploiting Software as Infrastructure Techniques

Prior to the public release of Kubernetes it was difficult to conduct joint development of elaborate analysis facilities due to the highly non-homogeneous nature of hardware and network topology across compute facilities. However, since the advent of systems like Kubernetes and OpenShift, which provide declarative interfaces for building fault-tolerant and self-healing deployments of networked software, it is possible for multiple institutes to collaborate more effectively since resource details are abstracted away through various forms of hardware and software virtualization. In this whitepaper we will outline the development of two analysis facilities: "Coffea-casa" at University of Nebraska Lincoln and the "Elastic Analysis Facility" at Fermilab, and how utilizing platform abstraction has improved the development of common software for each of these facilities, and future development plans made possible by this methodology.

Adaptation of the Fermilab Proton Source to Support New Muon Facilities

he PIP-II proton accelerator will provide the intensity sufficient to power a new generation of high energy facilities at Fermilab. Extension of that linac to higher energy with following acceleration and bunching rings could provide the intensity needed to feed a muon production target for a high-energy $\mu^{+} - \mu^{-}$ collider. Scenarios using a rapid-cycling synchrotron or an $\sim$8 GeV Linac are presented and discussed. Some near-term opportunities at Fermilab for muon collider R&D are introduced.
