Discharged cleaned surface effect on accuracy and reliability of electron density and temperature measurements by Langmuir probes
Significant effects have been observed on surfaces in the Shuttle Orbiter payload bay and on some experiments due to exposure to the LEO environment. These effects, which are predominantly manifested as surface recession and therefore mass loss, appear to arise from oxidation from exposure to atomic oxygen, the major LEO component. Rates of interaction were measured on two experiments for a large group of materials and specifically for thin organic films, and are in the range of 2-3 x 10 to the 24th cu cm/atom. These rates are large enough to present significant problems for solar arrays which use similar thin films for solar-cell support.
Effect of surface finish on diffuse spectral directional reflectance of metals
The effect of finite span on the jet-surface interaction noise source and the jet mixing noise shielding and reflection effects is considered using recently acquired experimental data. First, the experimental setup and resulting data are presented with particular attention to the role of surface span on far-field noise. These effects are then included in existing empirical models that have previously assumed that all surfaces are semi-infinite. This extended abstract briefly describes the experimental setup and data leaving the empirical modeling aspects for the final paper.

Radiative heat transfer between opaque interacting surfaces, investigating surface roughness effects
An overview of the fast integral RF evaluation (FIRE) program is presented. This program uses surface current integration to evaluate RF performance of antenna systems. It requires modeling of surfaces in X, Y, Z coordinates along equally spaced X and Y grids with Z in the focal directon. The far field contribution of each surface point includes the effects of the Z-component of surface current which is not included in the aperture integration technique. Because of this, surface current integration is the most effective and inclusive technique for predicting RF performance on non-ideal reflectors. Results obtained from use of the FIRE program and an aperture integration program to predict RF performance of a LSS antenna concept are presented.
The effects of surface preparation and gas flow on the recombination of nitrogen atoms at copper and platinum surfaces were determined. Atoms were generated by an electrodeless 2450-megacycle-per-second discharge, and their concentration was measured by gas-phase titration with nitric oxide. Test surfaces were either vacuum-evaporated films or spheres machined from bulk metal and cemented around small glass-bead thermistors. Heat released by recombination was measured as the difference in electrical energy required to maintain a given thermistor temperature with and without a catalytic surface exposed. Recombination coefficients measured at flow velocities of 1120, 1790, 2250, and 3460 centimeters per second and at pressures of 0.42 and 0.59 millimeter of mercury showed that flow conditions had no effect. The results were also independent of atom concentration. A rough indication of the temperature dependence was obtained; it was greater for copper than for platinum. Platinum films deposited on platinum or on glass had the same activity - about 3 percent of the atoms impinging recombined. With copper, however, the glass substrate greatly reduced the percent of atoms recombining over that of a bulk copper substrate where 4 percent of the impinging atoms recombined. This effect could be overcome by depositing a second film on top of the first. Bulk metal samples were subjected to various surface treatments including polishing, degreasing with a chlorinated hydrocarbon, washing with nitric acid, and rinsing with water. Polished, degreased platinum had low activity compared to an evaporated film, but nitric acid treatment made it equivalent. Polished, degreased copper was only slightly less active than a copper film; nitric acid etching decreased the activity still further, probably by preferentially exposing facets of low catalytic efficiency.

In the process of ion implantation, ion beams bombard the surface and create undesirable surface effects. The surface effects were investigated, and surface leakage currents were shown to be reduced by surface treatment. I-V characteristics and C-V measurements were obtained for the Zn-GaAs and Zn-(In,Ga)As junction is considered as a p-i-n heterojunction, without generation-recombination current. The Zn-GaAs junction is considered as a p-n homojunction with appreciable generation-recombination currents.

A theoretical analysis on the performance of hydrodynamic oil bearings is made considering surface roughness effect. The hydrodynamic as well as asperity contact load is found. The contact pressure was calculated with the assumption that the surface height distribution was Gaussian. The average Reynolds equation of partially lubricated surface was used to calculate hydrodynamic load. An analytical expression for average gap was found and was introduced to modify the average Reynolds equation. The resulting boundary value problem was then solved numerically by finite difference methods using the method of successive over relaxation. The pressure distribution and hydrodynamic load capacity of plane slider and journal bearings were calculated for various design data. The effects of attitude and roughness of surface on the bearing performance were shown. The results are compared with similar available solution of rough surface bearings. It is shown that: (1) the contribution of contact load is not significant; and (2) the hydrodynamic and contact load increase with surface roughness.
