Field-free platform for Majorana-like zero mode in superconductors with a topological surface state

Superconducting materials exhibiting topological properties are emerging as an exciting platform to realize fundamentally new excitations from topological quantum states of matter. In this letter, we explore the possibility of a field-free platform for generating Majorana zero energy excitations by depositing magnetic Fe impurities on the surface of candidate topological superconductors, LiFeAs and PbTaSe 2 . We use scanning tunneling microscopy to probe localized states induced at the Fe adatoms on the atomic scale and at sub-Kelvin temperatures. We find that each Fe adatom generates a striking zero-energy bound state inside the superconducting gap, which do not split in magnetic fields up to 8 T, underlining a nontrivial topological origin. Finally, our findings point to magnetic Fe adatoms evaporated on bulk superconductors with topological surface states for exploring Majorana zero modes and quantum information science under field-free conditions.

Conduction via surface states in antiferromagnetic Mott-insulating Ni S 2 single crystals

Pyrite structure transition-metal disulfides exhibit diverse ground states vs d-band filling, spanning diamagnetic semiconducting, ferromagnetic metallic, antiferromagnetic Mott insulating, and superconducting in FeS 2 , CoS 2 , NiS 2 , and CuS 2 . NiS is particularly interesting and poorly understood as its Mott insulating behavior is accompanied by complex antiferromagnetic ordering below ~38 K and perplexing weak ferromagnetism below ~30 K. Temperature-, pressure-, and composition-dependent insulator-metal transitions also occur, particularly in bandwidth-controlled NiS 2–x Se x , hole-doped Ni 1–x Co x S 2 , etc. Here, we use high-quality chemical-vapor-transport-grown NiS 2 single crystals characterized by x-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, magnetometry, and extensive transport and magnetotransport measurements, to generate new insight into this system. In particular, resistivity, magnetoresistance, and Hall effect analyses vs temperature, thickness, and surface preparation, provide unequivocal evidence of surface conduction, where the more conductive surface shunts essentially all current at low temperatures. The surface transport changes from two dimensional and insulating to three dimensional and metallic as the surface preparation is varied (also displaying intriguing sensitivity to magnetic ordering), significantly clarifying literature ambiguities with respect to the electronic ground state. These results have immediate implications. First, the temperature-, pressure-, and composition-dependent insulator-metal transitions deduced in the extensive prior work on NiS 2-x Se x , Ni 1–x Co x S 2 , etc., must clearly be reexamined in light of rife metallic surface conduction, not previously taken into account. Second, NiS 2 now joins FeS 2 and CoS 2 as systems in which bulk and surface electronic behaviors are strikingly different, suggesting that metallic surface states could be a universal feature of pyrite structure transition-metal disulfides.

Direct Measurement of Helicoid Surface States in RhSi Using Nonlinear Optics

Despite the fundamental nature of the edge state in topological physics, direct measurement of electronic and optical properties of the Fermi arcs of topological semimetals has posed a significant experimental challenge, as their response is often overwhelmed by the metallic bulk. However, laser-driven currents carried by surface and bulk states can propagate in different directions in nonsymmorphic crystals, allowing for the two components to be easily separated. Motivated by a recent theoretical prediction G. Chang et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 124, 166404 (2020), we have measured the linear and circular photogalvanic effect currents deriving from the Fermi arcs of the nonsymmorphic, chiral Weyl semimetal RhSi over the 0.45-1.1 eV incident photon energy range. Our data are in good agreement with the predicted spectral shape of the circular photogalvanic effect as a function of photon energy, although the direction of the surface photocurrent departed from the theoretical expectation over the energy range studied. In conclusion, surface currents arising from the linear photogalvanic effect were observed as well, with the unexpected result that only two of the six allowed tensor element were required to describe the measurements, suggesting an approximate emergent mirror symmetry inconsistent with the space group of the crystal.

Valence transition and termination-dependent surface states in the topological Kondo semimetal YbPtBi

Here, the Yb-terminated and Bi-terminated (111) surface electronic structure of topological Kondo semimetal YbPtBi is investigated using both density-functional-theory (DFT) -based calculations and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). The cleavage plane is found to be between Yb-layers and Bi-layers in both experiment and theory, and the broken inversion symmetry ensures the Yb-terminated surface does not mix with the Bi-terminated surface. The ARPES results at the Bi-terminated surface are similar to those reported for YPtBi or LuPtBi, and they can be well explained using DFT calculations assuming trivalent Yb atoms. In contrast, at the Yb-terminated surface, a trivalent to divalent transition and reduced hybridization with conduction electrons for the topmost Yb atoms are observed, as a result of reduced bonding with Bi-atoms. In addition, the Fermi arc features induced by the triply degenerate-points, which are missing at the Bi-terminated surface, can be identified at the Yb-terminated surface. Our study demonstrates unambiguously the reconstruction of surface electronic structure due to the valence transition of the lanthanide element in a Kondo lattice system.

Pinning of energy transitions of defects, complexes, and surface states in AlGaN alloys

In this work, we determine the dependence of the defect transition energies, electronic bands, and surface charge neutrality levels in AlGaN. With Vacuum level as reference, we show that energy transitions of localized defects and the surface Fermi level are independent of the alloy composition as electronic bands diverge with the increase in the bandgap as a function of alloy composition. The invariance of localized states on the alloy composition creates a convenient internal reference energy with respect to which other energy states may be measured. We demonstrate a higher generality to the universality rule with the independence of deep transition states of otherwise shallow donor type defects [(+1/+3) transition for VN] and defect complexes (C N +Si III ) in addition to the earlier predicted independent nature of mid-gap states when they are either the antibonding state between cationic impurities and host anion or acceptors at anion sites.

Pairing around a single Dirac point: A unifying view of Kohn-Luttinger superconductivity in Chern bands, quarter metals, and topological surface states

Superconductivity of a single two-dimensional Dirac fermion offers a natural route to topological superconductivity. While usually considered extrinsic—arising from proximity to a conventional superconductor—we investigate when a doped Dirac cone can develop superconductivity from a short-range repulsive interaction 𝑈 via the Kohn–Luttinger mechanism. We show that an ideal, linear Dirac cone is immune to pairing at leading order in 𝑈 2 . Superconductivity instead emerges only through higher-order in 𝑘 corrections to the dispersion, which are unavoidable in any lattice realization and crucially dictate the pairing symmetry. The form of the pairing thus reflects how the well-known obstruction to realizing a single Dirac cone on a lattice is circumvented. When a Dirac cone arises from broken time-reversal symmetry—for instance, at a transition between Chern insulators or in a valley-polarized phase—we find a topological 𝑝−𝑖⁢𝑝 state whose chirality is opposite to that of the parent chiral metal above 𝑇 𝑐 . By contrast, for a surface Dirac cone of a 3D topological insulator, superconductivity is stabilized by anisotropies in the dispersion. For 𝐶 3⁢𝑣 -symmetric warping, as in , pairing is strongest when the Fermi surface becomes hexagonal, leading to order in the (𝑑±𝑖⁢𝑑)×(𝑝+𝑖⁢𝑝) channel with accidental near-nodes. In the highly anisotropic limit 𝑣 𝑥 ≫𝑣 𝑦 , relevant to side surfaces of layered materials, the Fermi surface splits into two branches, and nesting favors a pairing symmetry 𝛥∼s⁢g⁡n⁢(𝑘 𝑥 )⁢cos⁡(𝑘 𝑦 ) reminiscent of organic superconductors.

Metallic surface states in a correlated d-electron topological Kondo insulator candidate FeSb 2

The resistance of a conventional insulator diverges as temperature approaches zero. The peculiar low-temperature resistivity saturation in the 4f Kondo insulator (KI) SmB 6 has spurred proposals of a correlation-driven topological Kondo insulator (TKI) with exotic ground states. However, the scarcity of model TKI material families leaves difficulties in disentangling key ingredients from irrelevant details. Here we use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) to study FeSb 2 , a correlated d-electron KI candidate that also exhibits a low-temperature resistivity saturation. On the (010) surface, we find a rich assemblage of metallic states with two-dimensional dispersion. Measurements of the bulk band structure reveal band renormalization, a large temperature-dependent band shift, and flat spectral features along certain high-symmetry directions, providing spectroscopic evidence for strong correlations. Our observations suggest that exotic insulating states resembling those in SmB 6 and YbB 12 may also exist in systems with d instead of f electrons.

Pair wave function symmetry in UTe2 from zero-energy surface state visualization

Although nodal spin-triplet topological superconductivity appears probable in uranium ditelluride (UTe 2 ), its superconductive order parameter Δ k remains unestablished. In theory, a distinctive identifier would be the existence of a superconductive topological surface band, which could facilitate zero-energy Andreev tunneling to an s-wave superconductor and also distinguish a chiral from a nonchiral Δ k through enhanced s-wave proximity. In this study, we used s-wave superconductive scan tips and detected intense zero-energy Andreev conductance at the UTe 2 (0-11) termination surface. Imaging revealed subgap quasiparticle scattering interference signatures with a-axis orientation. The observed zero-energy Andreev peak splitting with enhanced s-wave proximity signifies that Δ k of UTe 2 is a nonchiral state: B 1u , B 2u , or B 3u . However, if the quasiparticle scattering along the a axis is internodal, then a nonchiral B 3u state is the most consistent for UTe 2 .

Conductive surface states and Kondo exhaustion in insulating YbIr 3 Si 7

The interplay of Kondo screening and magnetic ordering in strongly correlated materials containing local moments is a subtle problem. Usually the number of conduction electrons per unit cell matches or exceeds the number of moments, and a Kondo-screened heavy Fermi liquid develops at low temperatures. Changing the pressure, magnetic field, or chemical doping can displace this heavy Fermi liquid in favor of a magnetically ordered state. Alternatively, Kondo singlet formation can be suppressed when the number of conduction electrons is small compared to the number of magnetic moments, known as the Kondo exhaustion scenario. Furthermore we report the discovery of such an “exhausted” Kondo lattice material, YbIr 3 Si 7 , where the bulk electrical conductivity tends to zero in the antiferromagnetic state below the Néel temperature T N = 4.1 K, as all the free carriers are consumed in the formation of Kondo singlets. By contrast, the surface is conducting, as the Yb 3+ ions relax into larger nonmagnetic Yb 2+ in the presence of reduced chemical pressure, which shifts the chemical potential.

Untangling charge-order dependent bulk states from surface effects in a topological kagome metal ScV 6 Sn 6

Kagome metals with charge density wave (CDW) order exhibit a broad spectrum of intriguing quantum phenomena. The recent discovery of the novel kagome CDW compound ScV 6 Sn 6 has spurred significant interest. However, understanding the interplay between CDW and the bulk electronic structure has been obscured by a profusion of surface states and terminations in this quantum material. Here, in this study, we employ photoemission spectroscopy and potassium dosing to elucidate the complete bulk band structure of ScV 6 Sn 6 , revealing multiple van Hove singularities near the Fermi level. We surprisingly discover a robust spin-polarized topological Dirac surface resonance state at the M point within the twofold van Hove singularities. Assisted by first-principles calculations, the temperature dependence of the k z -resolved angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy spectrum provides unequivocal evidence for the proposed $\sqrt{3}$×$\sqrt{3}$×3 charge order over other candidates. Our work not only enhances the understanding of the CDW-dependent bulk and surface states in ScV 6 Sn 6 , but also establishes an essential foundation for potential manipulation of the CDW order in kagome materials.

Insights into the laser-assisted photoelectric effect from solid-state surfaces

Photoemission from a solid surface provides a wealth of information about its electronic structure and dynamic evolution. Ultrafast pump-probe experiments offer real-time access to photon-surface interactions and the resulting electron dynamics. Here, we present a femtosecond time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy study of laser-assisted photoemission (LAPE) from two different metal surfaces, tungsten and platinum. Utilizing synchronized IR laser and x-ray pulses, photoelectron sideband generation up to the sixth order is observed. A significant material-dependent variation of the LAPE response has not been predicted by previous theoretical models, to the best of our knowledge. The observed phenomena are semiquantitatively reproduced by considering distinct dynamic dielectric responses of the two materials. In conclusion, these findings provide a deeper understanding of the LAPE process and insights into the dynamic interplay between optical laser fields and metal surfaces.

Modeling of surface-state induced inter-electrode isolation of n -on- p devices in mixed-field and γ -irradiation environments

Position sensitive n-on-p silicon sensors will be utilized in the tracker and in the High Granularity Calorimeter (HGCAL) of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment at High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). The detrimental effect of the radiation-induced accumulation of positive net oxide charge on position resolution in n-on-p sensors has typically been countered by the application of isolation implants like p-stop or p-spray between n + -electrodes. In addition to the positively charged layer inside the oxide and close to the Si/SiO 2 -interface, surface damage introduced by ionizing radiation in SiO 2 -passivated silicon particle detectors includes the accumulation of trapped-oxide-charge and interface traps. A previous study of either n/γ (mixed field)- or γ-irradiated Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor (MOS) capacitors showed evidence of substantially higher introduction rates of acceptor- and donor-type deep interface traps (N it,acc/don ) in mixed-field environment. Here, in this work, an inter-pad and -strip resistance (or resistivity (ρ int )) simulation study of n-on-p sensors with and without p-stop isolation implants was conducted for both irradiation types. Higher levels of ρint showed correlation to higher densities of deep N it,acc/don , with the inter-pad isolation performance of the mixed-field irradiated sensors becoming independent of the presence of p-stop implant between the n + - electrodes up to about 100 kGy. The low introduction rates of deep N it,acc/don in γ-irradiated sensors resulted in high sensitivity of ρ int to the presence and peak doping of p-stop above the lowest dose of about 7 kGy in the study. As a consequence of the advantageous influence of radiation-induced accumulation of deep N it on the inter-electrode isolation, position sensitive n-on-p sensors without isolation implants may be considered for future HEP-experiments where the radiation is largely due to hadrons.
