Amino-tethering synthesis strategy toward highly accessible sub-3-nm L1 0 -PtM catalysts for high-power fuel cells

Because of the poor accessibility of embedded active sites, platinum (Pt)-based electrocatalysts suffer from insufficient Pt utilization and mass transport in membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs), limiting their performance in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells. Here, we report a simple and universal approach to depositing sub-3-nm L1 0 -PtM nanoparticles over external surfaces of carbon supports through pore-tailored amino (NH 2 )-modification, which enables not only excellent activity for the oxygen reduction reaction, but also enhanced Pt utilization and mass transport in MEAs. Using a low loading of 0.10 mg Pt ∙cm -2 , the MEA of PtCo/KB-NH 2 delivered an excellent mass activity of 0.691 A∙mgPt -1 , a record-high power density of 0.96 W∙cm -2 at 0.67 V, and only a 30-mV drop at 0.80 A∙cm -2 after 30,000 voltage cycles, which meets nearly all targets set by the Department of Energy. Finally, this work provides an efficient strategy for designing advanced Pt-based electrocatalysts and realizing high-power fuel cells.

Charge Tethering Drives Intermediate-Range Order and Slow Dynamics in Zwitterionic Liquids

We have synthesized and characterized a family of zwitterionic liquids (ZwLs) based on the poly(ethylene oxide) imidazolium cation and the alkyl sulfonate anion. To better rationalize ZwLs′ structural behavior and networkforming properties, we have computationally studied them in contrast to isostructural but chemically untethered ionic liquid (IL) analogues. Perhaps surprisingly, it is the molecular liquids and not the ILs that show the most selfassembly and intermediate-range order associated with scattering prepeaks; the ZwLs display also the slowest dynamics. This is consistent with prior work showing the importance of networks in considering the viscoelastic relaxation of liquids. We find that, because of their significantly large molecular dipoles, these zwitterions are versatile network-building blocks that result in highly viscous liquids. From a structural perspective, networks in these ZwLs sit somewhere in between what would be true chemical connectivity and the Coulombic networks observed in ionic liquids.

Tethered from the Head and from the Tail: The Structure of Hydroxyl-Functionalized Ionic Liquids

Ionic liquids with special functionalities are synthesized with the specific purpose of creating new patterns of interaction in the condensed phase. This Letter discusses the case of alcohol-functionalized ILs, the so-called HFILs, which are part of the larger cohort of task-specific ionic liquids. We find that this small chemical modification can cause massive changes in the liquid landscape when the cationic tails are longer. For prototypical ionic liquids, larger alkyl tails act as separators of charge networks, but in the case of HFILs these become physical charge network linkers. The OH functionality adds a large repertoire of interactions and correlations that were mostly unavailable to traditional ILs.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa Adhesion and Biofilm Formation on Poly(l-lysine)-Tethered Hydrogels: Synergistic Effect of Substrate Stiffness and Positive Charge Density

Infections associated with antibacterial-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) are the major cause of morbidity and mortality of patients, presenting one of the greatest therapeutic challenges for treatment of community-acquired and nosocomial infections. To develop antimicrobial hydrogel coatings to control the adhesion and subsequent biofilm formation of P. aeruginosa, we have used photo-cross-linked poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) hydrogels with varied cross-linking densities and covalently grafted poly(l-lysine) (PLL) at different weight compositions (ϕ PLL ). Both surface stiffness and positive charge density of the hydrogels were efficiently tuned over a broad range to investigate their effects on two main strains of P. aeruginosa, PA01 and PA14. We found that both number and viability of attached cells were positively correlated with the hydrogel stiffness, leading to thicker and larger coverage of cell colonies at 72 h postseeding on the stiffer substrates. The dependence of both PA01 and PA14 strains on ϕ PLL , however, was nonmonotonic. Positive charges from dissociated amine groups in the grafted PLL chains significantly promoted initial adhesion and proliferation of both strains at low ϕ PLL and developed into the thickest biofilms on the stiffest hydrogels grafted with ϕ PLL of 1–2%. Nevertheless, on the softest hydrogels grafted with PLL at high ϕ PLL of 7–10%, the bacteria no longer attached or survived. These results not only improved our fundamental understanding of bacteria-material interactions but also provided a series of PLL-grafted PEGDA hydrogels with controlled stiffness and positive charge density as ideal surface coating materials to prevent bacterial infections.

A Cation-Tethered Flowable Polymeric Interface for Enabling Stable Deposition of Metallic Lithium

A fundamental challenge, shared across many energy storage devices, is the complexity of electrochemistry at the electrode–electrolyte interfaces that impacts the Coulombic efficiency, operational rate capability, and lifetime. Specifically, in energy-dense lithium metal batteries, the charging/discharging process results in structural heterogeneities of the metal anode, leading to battery failure by short-circuit and capacity fade. In this work, we take advantage of organic cations with lower reduction potential than lithium to build an electrically responsive polymer interface that not only adapts to morphological perturbations during electrodeposition and stripping but also modulates the lithium ion migration pathways to eliminate surface roughening. As a result, we find that this concept can enable prolonging the long-term cycling of a high-voltage lithium metal battery by at least twofold compared to bare lithium metal.

Profile observations of the Arctic atmospheric boundary layer with the BELUGA tethered balloon during MOSAiC

During the Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate (MOSAiC) expedition, the Balloon-bornE moduLar Utility for profilinG the lower Atmosphere (BELUGA) was deployed from an ice floe drifting in the Fram Strait from 29 June to 27 July 2020. The BELUGA observations aimed to characterize the cloudy Arctic atmospheric boundary layer above the sea ice using a modular setup of five instrument packages. The in situ measurements included atmospheric thermodynamic and dynamic state parameters (air temperature, humidity, pressure, and three-dimensional wind), broadband solar and terrestrial irradiance, aerosol particle microphysical properties, and cloud particle images. In total, 66 profile observations were collected during 33 balloon flights from the surface to maximum altitudes of 0.3 to 1.5 km. The profiles feature a high vertical resolution of 0.01 m to 1 m, including measurements below, inside, and above frequently occurring low-level clouds. This publication describes the balloon operations, instruments, and the obtained data set. We invite the scientific community for joint analysis and model application of the freely available data on PANGAEA.

Sarecycline interferes with tRNA accommodation and tethers mRNA to the 70S ribosome

Sarecycline is a new narrow-spectrum tetracycline-class antibiotic approved for the treatment of acne vulgaris. Tetracyclines share a common four-ring naphthacene core and inhibit protein synthesis by interacting with the 70S bacterial ribosome. Sarecycline is distinguished chemically from other tetracyclines because it has a 7-[[methoxy(methyl)amino]methyl] group attached at the C7 position of ring D. To investigate the functional role of this C7 moiety, we determined the X-ray crystal structure of sarecycline bound to the Thermus thermophilus 70S ribosome. Our 2.8-Å resolution structure revealed that sarecycline binds at the canonical tetracycline binding site located in the decoding center of the small ribosomal subunit. Importantly, unlike other tetracyclines, the unique C7 extension of sarecycline extends into the messenger RNA (mRNA) channel to form a direct interaction with the A-site codon to possibly interfere with mRNA movement through the channel and/or disrupt A-site codon–anticodon interaction. Based on our biochemical studies, sarecycline appears to be a more potent initiation inhibitor compared to other tetracyclines, possibly due to drug interactions with the mRNA, thereby blocking accommodation of the first aminoacyl transfer RNA (tRNA) into the A site. Overall, our structural and biochemical findings rationalize the role of the unique C7 moiety of sarecycline in antibiotic action.

Leading the way out: how a plant myosin facilitates vesicle tethering during exocytosis

Exocytosis is a process by which molecules, such as lipids, proteins, and polysaccharides, are delivered to the plasma membrane (PM) and the extracellular space via vesicular transport. Precise orchestration of this process ensures the spatiotemporal specificity of cargo delivery and therefore plays a vital role in cell growth, function, and response to environmental cues (reviewed in Wu and Guo, 2015; Ravikumar et al., 2017). Lastly, while sophisticated mechanisms for exocytosis have been described in animal and yeast cells, the extent of conservation of these mechanisms in plant systems is far less clear.
