Quantum spin state transitions in the spin-1 equilateral triangular lattice antiferromagnet Na 2 BaNi(PO 4 ) 2

We report we have grown single crystals of Na 2 BaNi(PO 4 ) 2 , a spin-1 equilateral triangular lattice antiferromagnet (ETLAF), and performed magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, and thermal conductivity measurements at ultralow temperatures. The main results are as follows: (i) At zero magnetic field, Na 2 BaNi(PO 4 ) 2 exhibits a magnetic ordering at 430 mK with a weak ferromagnetic moment along the $\textit{c}$ axis. This suggests a canted 120° spin structure, which is in a plane including the crystallographic $\textit{c}$ axis due to the existence of an easy-axis anisotropy and ferromagnetically stacked along the $\textit{c}$ axis. (ii) With increasing field along the $\textit{c}$ axis, a 1/3 magnetization plateau is observed, which means that the canted 120° spin structure is transformed into an up-up-down (UUD) spin structure. With even higher fields, the UUD phase further evolves into possible V and V' phases. (iii) With increasing field along the $\textit{a}$ axis, the canted 120° spin structure is possibly transformed into an umbrella phase and a V phase. Therefore Na 2 BaNi(PO 4 ) 2 is a rare example of a spin-1 ETLAF with single-crystalline form that exhibits easy-axis spin anisotropy and a series of quantum spin state transitions.

Nature of quantum spin liquids of the S = 1 2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the triangular lattice: A parallel DMRG study

Here we study the ground-state properties of the quantum spin liquid (QSL) phases of the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice with nearest- (J 1 ), next-nearest- (J 2 ), and third-neighbor (J 3 ) interactions by using density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method. By combining parallel DMRG with SU(2) spin rotational symmetry, we are able to obtain accurate results on large cylinders with length up to L x =48 and circumference L y =6–12. Our results suggest that the QSL phase of the J 1 -J 2 Heisenberg model is gapped which is characterized by the absence of gapless mode, short-range spin-spin and dimer-dimer correlations. In the presence of J 3 interaction, we find that a new critical QSL with a single gapless mode emerges. While both spin-spin and scalar chiral-chiral correlations are short-ranged, dimer-dimer correlations are quasi-long-ranged which decays as a power-law at long distances.

Non-magnetic ion site disorder effects on the quantum magnetism of a spin-1/2 equilateral triangular lattice antiferromagnet

Here, with the motivation to study how non-magnetic ion site disorder affects the quantum magnetism of Ba 3 CoSb 2 O 9 , a spin-1/2 equilateral triangular lattice antiferromagnet, we performed DC and AC susceptibility, specific heat, elastic and inelastic neutron scattering measurements on single crystalline samples of Ba 2.87 Sr 0.13 CoSb 2 O 9 with Sr doping on non-magnetic Ba 2+ ion sites. The results show that Ba 2.87 Sr 0.13 CoSb 2 O 9 exhibits (i) a two-step magnetic transition at 2.7 K and 3.3 K, respectively; (ii) a possible canted 120 degree spin structure at zero field with reduced ordered moment as 1.24 μ B /Co; (iii) a series of spin state transitions for both H∥ab-plane and H∥c-axis. For H∥ab-plane, the magnetization plateau feature related to the up–up–down phase is significantly suppressed; (iv) an inelastic neutron scattering spectrum with only one gapped mode at zero field, which splits to one gapless and one gapped mode at 9 T. All these features are distinctly different from those observed for the parent compound Ba 3 CoSb 2 O 9 , which demonstrates that the non-magnetic ion site disorder (the Sr doping) plays a complex role on the magnetic properties beyond the conventionally expected randomization of the exchange interactions. We propose the additional effects including the enhancement of quantum spin fluctuations and introduction of a possible spatial anisotropy through the local structural distortions.

Geometrical frustration and competing orders in the dipolar trimerized triangular lattice

Here, we introduce and explore low-energy configurations in two-dimensional arrays consisting of Ising-type dipolar coupled nanomagnets lithographically defined onto three-nanomagnet vertices arranged in a triangular coordination. Thus, the system is dubbed the trimerized triangular lattice. Employing synchrotron-based photoemission electron microscopy, we perform temperature-dependent magnetic imaging of moment configurations. These states are then characterized in terms of spin correlations and magnetic structure factors. The results reveal a competition between ferromagnetic and vortex dominated orders, which can be controlled by varying the relevant lattice parameter and the corresponding competing interactions.

Neutron scattering investigation of proposed Kosterlitz-Thouless transitions in the triangular-lattice Ising antiferromagnet TmMgGaO 4

In this study, we use a variety of neutron scattering techniques to investigate the nature of the unusual magnetism in the compound TmMgGaO 4 . The crystal structure of this material hosts a triangular lattice of Tm spins exhibiting strong geometrical frustration. Theoretical predictions have suggested an unusual topological magnetic phase transition known as a Kosterlitz-Thouless transition at low temperature. By combining and comparing the various neutron scattering results, we have compelling evidence that such a transition indeed occurs at temperatures around 4 K in TmMgGaO 4 . This establishes TmMgGaO 4 as a valuable system to study Kosterlitz-Thouless physics in a dense spin system.

Mapping the three-dimensional fermiology of the triangular lattice magnet EuAg 4 Sb 2

In this paper, we report the temperature-field phase diagram as well as present a comprehensive study of the electronic structure and three-dimensional fermiology of the triangular-lattice magnet EuAg 4 ⁢Sb 2 , utilizing quantum oscillation measurements, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, and first-principles calculations. The complex magnetic phase diagram of EuAg 4 ⁢Sb 2 highlights many transitions through nontrivial AFM states. Shubnikov-de Haas and de Haas-van Alphen oscillations were observed in the polarized ferromagnetic state of EuAg 4 ⁢Sb 2 , revealing three pairs of distinct spin-split frequency branches with small effective masses. A comparison of the angle-dependent oscillation data with first-principles calculations in the ferromagnetic state and angle-resolved photoemission spectra shows good agreement, identifying tubular hole pockets and hourglass-shaped hole pockets at the Brillouin zone center, as well as diamond-shaped electron pockets at the zone boundary. As the temperature increases, the frequency branches of the tiny hourglass pockets evolve into a more cylindrical shape, while the larger pockets remain unchanged. This highlights that variations in exchange splitting, driven by changes in the magnetic moment, primarily impact the small Fermi pockets without significantly altering the overall band structure. As a result, this is consistent with first-principles calculations, which show minimal changes near the Fermi level across ferromagnetic and simple antiferromagnetic states or under varying on-site Coulomb repulsion.

Magnetic order in the S eff =1/2 triangular-lattice compound NdCd 3 ⁢P 3

Here, we present and characterize a new member of the R⁢Cd 3 ⁢P 3 (R=rare earth) family of materials, NdCd 3 ⁢P 3 , which possesses Nd 3+ cations arranged on well-separated triangular lattice layers. Via measurements of magnetization, heat capacity, and electrical resistivity, we characterize the electronic properties of NdCd 3 ⁢P 3 and compare results to density functional theory calculations.

Synthesis, crystal structure and magnetic properties of K Ln Se 2 ( Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Nd) structures: A family of 2D triangular lattice frustrated magnets

Here, we report the detail synthesis, single crystal structure characterization and magnetic properties of KLnSe 2 series obtained via solid state molten flux growth method. The crystal structures were characterized using single crystal x-ray diffraction. The KLnSe 2 (Ln = La, Ce, Pr and Nd) series crystallizes in the trigonal crystal system with the space group of R-3m (No. 166). The overall structure contains two-dimensional (2D) layers made from edged shared LnSe 6 -octahedra. Ln 3+ ions form a perfect triangular magnetic lattice which propagates along ab-plane. These triangular lattices are separated by the K + ions. The magnetic properties confirm that, Ce, Pr and Nd do not show any long-range ordering down to 0.4 K indicating frustrated magnetism in the KLnSe 2 series.

Magnetic structure and Ising-like antiferromagnetism in the bilayer triangular lattice compound NdZnPO

Here, the complex interplay of spin frustration and quantum fluctuations in low-dimensional quantum materials leads to a variety of intriguing phenomena. This research focuses on a detailed analysis of the magnetic behavior exhibited by NdZnPO, a bilayer spin-1/2 triangular lattice antiferromagnet. The investigation employs magnetization, specific heat, and powder neutron scattering measurements. At zero field, a long-range magnetic order is observed at T N = 1.64 K. Powder neutron diffraction experiments show the Ising-like magnetic moments along the c-axis, revealing a stripe like magnetic structure with magnetic propagation vector (1/2, 0, 1/2). Application of a magnetic field along the c-axis suppresses the antiferromagnetic order, leading to a fully polarized ferromagnetic state above B c = 4.5 T. This transition is accompanied by notable enhancements in the nuclear Schottky contribution. Moreover, the absence of spin frustration and expected field-induced plateau-like phases are remarkable observations. Detailed calculations of magnetic dipolar interactions revealed complex couplings reminiscent of a honeycomb lattice, suggesting the potential emergence of Kitaev-like physics within this system. This comprehensive study of the magnetic properties of NdZnPO highlights unresolved intricacies, underscoring the imperative for further exploration to unveil the underlying governing mechanisms.

Quantum Spin Dynamics Due to Strong Kitaev Interactions in the Triangular-Lattice Antiferromagnet CsCeSe 2

The extraordinary properties of the Kitaev model have motivated an intense search for new physics in materials that combine geometrical and bond frustration. In this Letter, we employ inelastic neutron scattering, spin wave theory, and exact diagonalization to study the spin dynamics in the perfect triangular-lattice antiferromagnet (TLAF) CsCeSe 2 . This material orders into a stripe phase, which is demonstrated to arise as a consequence of the off-diagonal bond-dependent terms in the spin Hamiltonian. By studying the spin dynamics at intermediate fields, we identify an interaction between the single-magnon state and the two-magnon continuum that causes decay of coherent magnon excitations, level repulsion, and transfer of spectral weight to the continuum that are controlled by the strength of the magnetic field. Our results provide a microscopic mechanism for the stabilization of the stripe phase in TLAF and show how complex many-body physics can be present in the spin dynamics in a magnet with strong Kitaev coupling even in an ordered ground state. Hidden orders and phase transitions for the fully packed quantum loop model on the triangular lattice

Abstract Quantum loop and dimer models are prototypical correlated systems with local constraints, which are not only intimately connected to lattice gauge theories and topological orders but are also widely applicable to the broad research areas of quantum materials and quantum simulation. Employing our sweeping cluster quantum Monte Carlo algorithm, we reveal the complete phase diagram of the triangular-lattice fully packed quantum loop model. Apart from the known lattice nematic (LN) solid and the even$${{\mathbb{Z}}}_{2}$$ Z 2 quantum spin liquid (QSL) phases, we discover a hidden vison plaquette (VP) phase, which had been overlooked and misinterpreted as a QSL for more than a decade. Moreover, the VP-to-QSL continuous transition belongs to the (2 + 1)D cubic * universality class, which offers a lattice realization of the (fractionalized) cubic fixed point that had long been considered as irrelevant towards the O(3) symmetry until corrected recently by conformal bootstrap calculations. Our results are therefore of relevance to recent developments in both experiments and theory, and facilitate further investigations of hidden phases and transitions.

Triangular lattice quantum dimer model with variable dimer density

Abstract Quantum dimer models are known to host topological quantum spin liquid phases, and it has recently become possible to simulate such models with Rydberg atoms trapped in arrays of optical tweezers. Here, we present large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulation results on an extension of the triangular lattice quantum dimer model with terms in the Hamiltonian annihilating and creating single dimers. We find distinct odd and even $${{\mathbb{Z}}}_{2}$$ Z 2 spin liquids, along with several phases with no topological order: a staggered crystal, a nematic phase, and a trivial symmetric phase with no obvious broken symmetry. We also present dynamic spectra of the phases, and note implications for experiments on Rydberg atoms.

Magnetic properties of Tm 3+ in layered triangular lattices

Rare-earth chalcogenides, ARCh 2 (A = alkali metal or monovalent ion; R = rare-earth elements; Ch = O, S, and Se), have been identified as promising candidates for exploring a variety of novel frustrated quantum magnetic phenomena. Tm-based series, ATmCh 2 , where Tm 3+ ions are arranged on various frustrated geometric lattices, provide a platform for investigating the competitions among spin–orbit coupling, crystal field effects, and magnetic exchange interactions in the context of geometric frustration. In this study, we present how the crystallographic structures of newly synthesized ATmSe 2 (A = Li and Na) influence their frustrated magnetic behaviors. Both NaTmSe 2 and LiTmSe 2 adopt a delafossite-type structure with a two-dimensional (2D) triangular lattice, but LiTmSe 2 has a much shorter c-axis parameter compared to this in NaTmSe 2 . Both heat capacity and magnetic susceptibility measurements confirm the absence of long-range magnetic order in either compound. However, magnetic measurements data reveals the differences in magnetic interactions: NaTmSe 2 exhibits features of low-dimensional magnetism, likely driven by its layered crystal structure, compared to LiTmSe 2 .

Topological Superconductivity in the Doped Chiral Spin Liquid on the Triangular Lattice

It has been established that the undoped, i.e., δ = 0 , system has a CSL ground state in the parameter region 0.32 ≤ J χ / J ≤ 0.56 . Upon light doping, we find that the ground state of the system is consistent with a Luther-Emery liquid with power-law superconducting and charge-density-wave correlations but short-range spin-spin correlations. In particular, the superconducting correlations, whose pairing symmetry is consistent with d ± i d wave, are dominant at all hole doping concentrations. Overall, our results provide direct evidences that doping the CSL on the triangular lattice can naturally give rise to topological superconductivity.

Large adiabatic temperature change and magnetic frustration in triangular lattice antiferromagnet Dy 2 IrSi 3

While previous studies reveal that the formation of polycrystalline R 2 TX 3 (R = rare-earth, T = transition metal, X = p-block element) type compounds with T = Ir and Co is not achievable without deliberate introduction of atomic vacancies of Ir/Co and Si, here we report successful synthesis of Dy 2 IrSi 3 with fully stoichiometric ratio of constituent elements. An antiferromagnetic transition is manifested in the compound at 6.6 K where only about 50 % of Dy spins take part, while the rest remain in highly frustrated state due to edge-sharing triangular lattice geometry. The magnetic frustration is conclusively probed through magnetization, heat capacity and magnetocaloric study and the frustration parameter (f = |θ p |/T N , θ p , T N being Curie-Weiss and Néel temperatures, respectively) in this case is as large as ~ 3. An additional cluster-glass type transition at ~2.8 K observed in this system has likely been originated due to this magnetic frustration. The magnetocaloric effect reveals an adiabatic temperature change of ~7.5 K for 70 kOe magnetic field, which is one of the largest values reported in intermetallic compounds.

Dimer description of the SU(4) antiferromagnet on the triangular lattice

In systems with many local degrees of freedom, high-symmetry points in the phase diagram can provide an important starting point for the investigation of their properties throughout the phase diagram. In systems with both spin and orbital (or valley) degrees of freedom such a starting point gives rise to SU(4)-symmetric models. Here we consider SU(4)-symmetric "spin" models, corresponding to Mott phases at half-filling, i.e. the six-dimensional representation of SU(4). This may be relevant to twisted multilayer graphene. In particular, we study the SU(4) antiferromagnetic "Heisenberg" model on the triangular lattice, both in the classical limit and in the quantum regime. Carrying out a numerical study using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG), we argue that the ground state is non-magnetic. We then derive a dimer expansion of the SU(4) spin model. An exact diagonalization (ED) study of the effective dimer model suggests that the ground state breaks translation invariance, forming a valence bond solid (VBS) with a 12-site unit cell. Finally, we consider the effect of SU(4)-symmetry breaking interactions due to Hund's coupling, and argue for a possible phase transition between a VBS and a magnetically ordered state.

Observation of the spiral spin liquid in a triangular-lattice material

The spiral spin liquid (SSL) is a highly degenerate state characterized by a continuous contour or surface in reciprocal space spanned by a spiral propagation vector. Although the SSL state has been predicted in a number of various theoretical models, very few materials are so far experimentally identified to host such a state. Via combined single-crystal wide-angle and small-angle neutron scattering, we report observation of the SSL in the quasi-two-dimensional delafossite-like AgCrSe 2 . We show that it is a very close realization of the ideal Heisenberg J 1 –J 2 –J 3 frustrated model on the triangular lattice. By supplementing our experimental results with microscopic spin-dynamics simulations, we demonstrate how such exotic magnetic states are driven by thermal fluctuations and exchange frustration.

Interleaved bond frustration in a triangular lattice antiferromagnet

Frustration of long-range order via lattice geometry amplifies fluctuations and generates ground states that are highly sensitive to perturbations. Traditionally, geometric frustration is used to engineer unconventional magnetic states; however, the charge degree of freedom and bond order can be similarly frustrated. Finding materials that host both frustrated magnetic and bond networks holds promise for engineering structural and magnetic states with the potential of coupling to one another via either magnetic or strain fields. Here we identify an unusual instance of this coexistence in the triangular lattice antiferromagnets LnCd 3 P 3 (Ln = lanthanides). These compounds feature two-dimensional planes of unique trigonal planar CdP 3 units with an underlying bond instability that is frustrated via emergent kagome ice correlations. This bond instability is interleaved in between layers of frustrated magnetic moments. Furthermore, our results establish LnCd 3 P 3 as a rare materials class in which frustrated magnetism is embedded within a dopable semiconductor with a frustrated bond order instability.
