Total ozone derived from UV spectrophotometer measurements on the NASA CV-990 aircraft for the fall 1976 latitude survey flights

An ultraviolet interference filter spectrophotometer was modified to use a photodiode and was flown on latitude survey flights in the fall of 1976. Comparison with Dobson station total ozone values shows agreement between UVS and Dobson total ozone of + or - 2 percent. The procedure used to convert UVS measured ozone above the aircraft altitude to total ozone above ground level introduces an additional 2 percent deviation for very high altitude UVS ozone data. Under stable aircraft operating conditions, the UVS derived ozone values have a variability, or reproducibility, of better than + or -1 percent. The UVS data from the latitude survey flights yield a detailed latitude profile of total ozone over the Pacific Ocean during November 1976. Significant latitudinal structure in total ozone is found at the middle latitudes (30 deg to 40 deg N and S).

ROCOZ-A (improved rocket launched ozone sensor) for middle atmosphere ozone measurements

An improved interference filter based ultraviolet photometer (ROCOZ-A) for measuring stratospheric ozone is discussed. The payload is launched aboard a Super-Loki to a typical apogee of 70 km. The instrument measures the solar ultraviolet irradiance as it descends on a parachute. The total cumulative ozone is then calculated based on the Beer-Lambert law. The cumulative ozone precision measured in this way is 2.0% to 2.5% over an altitude range of 20 and 55 km. Results of the intercomparison with the SBUV overpass data and ROCOZ-A data are also discussed.

Vacuum ultraviolet thin films. I - Optical constants of BaF2, CaF2, LaF3, MgF2, Al2O3, HfO2, and SiO2 thin films. II - Vacuum ultraviolet all-dielectric narrowband filters

An iteration process matching calculated and measured reflectance and transmittance values in the 120-230 nm VUV region is presently used to ascertain the optical constants of bulk MgF2, as well as films of BaF2, CaF2, LaF3, MgF2, Al2O3, HfO2, and SiO2 deposited on MgF2 substrates. In the second part of this work, a design concept is demonstrated for two filters, employing rapidly changing extinction coefficients, centered at 135 nm for BaF2 and 141 nm for SiO2. These filters are shown to yield excellent narrowband spectral performance in combination with narrowband reflection filters.

Effects of long-duration exposure on optical system components

The optical materials and UV detectors experiment (SOO50-1) was a set of 15 optical windows, filters, and ultraviolet detectors. The optical specimens were all retrieved in excellent condition. No discoloration of the bulk optical window materials occurred, but the optical windows did experience several types of contamination. The most notable degradation of the optics were the deposition of an organic film on both surfaces. The films' absorptions were measured using a Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer and UV spectrometers. The UV absorptions were almost 100 percent at 200 nm and about 50 percent at 380 nm.

Precision Select Mechanisms for the GLAS and SOLSE2 Instruments

The Geoscience Laser Altimeter System (GLAS) instrument had requirements for a 2-position mechanism to rotate mirrors into and out of the optical path of the altimetry detectors and the lasers. The Solar Ozone Limb Sounding Experiment II (SOLSE2) instrument had a similar requirement of rotating a visible (VIS) or ultraviolet (W) filter into the instrument optical path. Both GLAS and SOLSE2 had similar operational and survival environments and lifetime requirements. A novel, precision rotational latching mechanism was designed to fulfill the needs of both missions. The GLAS instrument had driving stability and repeatability requirements, such that if the mechanism met these stringent requirements, it would more than surpass the required performance for the SOLSE2 mechanism. The resulting mechanism, referred to as a 'select mechanism' since it allows selection between 2 positions, was successfully designed and implemented for both missions.

Ultraviolet photometry from the Orbiting Astronomical Observatory. XXXIV - Filter photometry of 531 stars of diverse types

Ultraviolet magnitudes for 531 stars observed with the Wisconsin Experiment Package on OAO 2 are tabulated. It is noted that these data constitute a subset of the OAO 2 data on file at the National Space Science Data Center. The tabulation contains previously published data all reduced to a uniform magnitude system. It is pointed out that the observations were obtained with the medium band interference filter photometers. Eleven magnitudes are given designated by their centroid wavelengths.

Instrumental sensing of stationary source emissions

A variety of programs have been conducted within EPA to evaluate the capability of various ground-based remote-sensing techniques for measuring the SO2 concentration, velocity, and opacity of effluents from coal-burning power plants. The results of the remote measurements were compared with the results of instack measurements made using EPA reference methods. Attention is given to infrared gas-filter correlation radiometry for SO2 concentration, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy for SO2 concentration, ultraviolet matched-filter correlation spectroscopy for SO2 concentration, infrared and ultraviolet television for velocity and SO2 concentration, infrared laser-Doppler velocimetry for plume velocity, and visible laser radar for plume opacity.

Enhanced Aluminum Reflecting and Solar-Blind Filter Coatings for the Far-Ultraviolet

The advancement of far-ultraviolet (FUV) coatings is essential to meet the specified throughput requirements of the Large UV/Optical/IR (LUVOIR) Surveyor Observatory which will cover wavelengths down to the 100 nm range. The biggest constraint in the optical thin film coating design is attenuation in the Lyman-Alpha Ultraviolet range of 100-130 nm in which conventionally deposited thin film materials used in this spectral region (e.g. aluminum [Al] protected with Magnesium fluoride [MgF2]) often have high absorption and scatter properties degrading the throughput in an optical system. We investigate the use of optimally deposited aluminum and aluminum tri-fluoride (AlF3) materials for reflecting and solar blind band-pass filter coatings for use in the FUV. Optical characterization of the deposited designs has been performed using UV spectrometry. The optical thin film design and optimal deposition conditions to produce superior reflectance and transmittance using Al and AlF3 are presented.

Ultraviolet spectrophotometer for measuring columnar atmospheric ozone from aircraft

An ultraviolet spectrophotometer (UVS) to measure downward solar fluxes from an aircraft or other high altitude platform is described. The UVS uses an ultraviolet diffuser to obtain large angular response with no aiming requirement, a twelve-position filter wheel with narrow (2-nm) and broad (20-nm) bandpass filters, and an ultraviolet photodiode. The columnar atmospheric ozone above the UVS (aircraft) is calculated from the ratios of the measured ultraviolet fluxes. Comparison with some Dobson station measurements gives agreement to 2%. Some UVS measured ozone profiles over the Pacific Ocean for November 1976 are shown to illustrate the instrument's performance.

Effects of simulated space radiation on selected optical materials

The effect of simulated Nimbus spacecraft orbital (1100 km, circular, and polar) radiation on wide bandpass glass filters, narrow bandpass thin film interference filters, and several fused silicas was determined by transmittance measurements over the 200 to 3400 nanom wavelength region. No changes were observed in the filters, which were shielded with fused silica during irradiation, after exposure to a 1-year equivalent orbital dose of electrons, nor in the fused silicas after the same electron exposure plus a 1-year equivalent dose of protons. Exposure to a 1/2-year equivalent dose of solar ultraviolet radiation caused a significant degradation in the transmittance of two ultraviolet-transmitting interference filters but had no effect on two colored glass filters that transmitted in the visible and near infrared regions. As a result of the ultraviolet exposure the fused silicas exhibited losses of several percent over the 200- to 300 nanom wavelength region.

Improved photoionization mass spectrometer

Improved spectrometer for gas analysis lessens the intensity problem that occurs in obtaining dispersed ultraviolet radiation. A filter, consisting of a selectively transmitting gas cell, a thin film or mirror, or a predispersing grating, alleviates problems of interference from higher-order spectral lines and from scattered ultraviolet light.

Mass absorption coefficients of Parylene N at soft X-ray and vacuum-ultraviolet wavelengths

Parylene N was selected as a bandpass filter for the extreme-ultraviolet telescope, flown on the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project in July 1975. The telescope measures stellar and diffuse cosmic radiation in the wavelength region from 45 to 170 A. In connection with this application, a systematic study was conducted of the mass absorption coefficient of the Parylene N. The results of the study for the wavelength region from 44 to 2536 A are reported.

The Transition Region And Coronal Explorer (TRACE)

The objectives and the characteristics of TRACE, selected as a NASA small explorer mission for development and flight in late 1997, is presented. The TRACE science investigation explores the connections between fine-scale magnetic fields and the associated plasma structures on the sun. The instrument collects images of solar plasmas at temperatures from 10(exp 4) to 10(exp 7) K, with an arc second spatial resolution and good temporal resolution and continuum. TRACE and SOHO will gather simultaneous, digital measurements of all temperature regimes of the solar atmospheric, in both high-resolution imaging and spectroscopy, and magnetogram to photosphere. The 30 cm aperture TRACE telescope uses three normal-incidence coatings for the extreme ultraviolet and one for the ultraviolet on quadrants of the primary and secondary mirrors. Interference filters isolate five different ultraviolet bands. The images are aligned and internally stabilized against spacecraft jitter. TRACE will be launched into a sun-synchronous orbit, allowing continuous observing for eight months of the baseline one-year mission. It will be operated in coordination with the SOHO experiment operations facility.

Flight of a UV spectrophotometer aboard Galileo 2, the NASA Convair 990 aircraft

An ultraviolet interference-filter spectrophotometer (UVS) fabricated for aircraft-borne use on the DOT Climatic Impact Assessment Program (CIAP) has been successfully tested in a series of flights on the NASA Convair 990, Galileo II. UV flux data and the calculated total ozone above the flight path are reported for several of the flights. Good agreement is obtained with the total ozone as deducted by integration of an ozone sonde vertical profile obtained at Wallops Island, Virginia near the time of a CV-990 underpass. Possible advantages of use of the UVS in the NASA Global Atmospheric Sampling Program are discussed.
