Ground based studies of the vibrational and rotational dynamics of acoustically levitated drops and shells

A substantial amount of experimental data can be gathered on the dynamics of acoustically positioned liquids in a ground-based laboratory and during short duration low-gravity parabolic flights of the KC-135. The preliminary results of a set of measurements of the static shape, of the vibrational spectrum, and the rotation equilibrium shapes of simple drops and liquid shells carried out using ultrasonic levitators working between 19 and 40 kHz is presented. The droplet diameter ranges between 1 and 5 mm, the surface tension of the liquid used varies between 25 and 70 dynes/cm, and the viscosity is changed between 1 to 1,000 cP. Of particular interest is the variation of the frequency of the fundamental mode of shape oscillation with various factors, and the effects of static drop shape deformation on the limit of stability of the axisymmetric shape of a drop in solid-body rotation.

Dynamic Characteristics and Stability Analysis of Space Shuttle Main Engine Oxygen Pump

The dynamic characteristics of the Space Shuttle high pressure oxygen pump are presented. Experimental data is presented to show the vibration spectrum and response under actual engine operation and also in spin pit testing for balancing. The oxygen pump appears to be operating near a second critical speed and is sensitive to self excited aerodynamic cross coupling forces in the turbine and pump. An analysis is presented to show the improvement in pump stability by the application of turbulent flow seals, preburner seals, and pump shaft cross sectional modifications.

Analysis of a spatial tracking subsystem for optical communications

Spatial tracking plays a very critical role in designing optical communication systems because of the small angular beamwidth associated with the optical signal. One possible solution for spatial tracking is to use a nutating mirror which dithers the incoming beam at a rate much higher than the mechanical disturbances. A power detector then senses the change in detected power as the signal is reflected off the nutating mirror. This signal is then correlated with the nutator driver signals to obtain estimates of the azimuth and elevation tracking signals to control the fast scanning mirrors. A theoretical analysis is performed for a spatial tracking system using a nutator disturbed by shot noise and mechanical vibrations. Contributions of shot noise and mechanical vibrations to the total tracking error variance are derived. Given the vibration spectrum and the expected signal power, there exists an optimal amplitude for the nutation which optimizes the receiver performance. The expected performance of a nutator based system is estimated based on the choice of nutation amplitude.

Deformation of Fluid Column by Action of Axial Vibration and Some Aspects of High-Rate Thermocapillary Convection

The deformation of the fluid column by an action of a low-frequency vibration is considered. It is shown that behavior of the free fluid surface depends on the frequency of applied vibration and its amplitude. In the area of very low frequencies when fluid has time to comment on travel of bounding solid walls limiting column, the harmonical oscillations of free surface with given frequency are observed. With increase of vibration frequency the steady-state relief on free fluid surface is formed. If the amplitude of vibration is very small and the frequency corresponding to the first peak in the vibration spectrum on the Mir orbital station, the deformation of free surface tends to zero. Fluid flow induced thermocapillary effect on deformed free surface is more unstable as in the case of smooth cylindrical surface. It was shown that width of heating zone affects very essentially the flow pattern and transition to oscillatory regime of thermocapillary convection.

In Site Analysis of a High Temperature Cure Reaction in Real Time Using Modulated Fiber-Optic FT-Raman Spectroscopy

The vibrational spectrum of a high temperature (330 C) polymerization reaction was successfully monitored in real time using a modulated fiber-optic FT-Raman spectrometer. A phenylethynyl terminated monomer was cured, and spectral evidence for two different reaction products was acquired. The products are a conjugated polyene chain and a cyclized trimer. This is the first report describing the use of FT-Raman spectroscopy to monitor a high temperature (greater than 250 C) reaction in real time.

Ab Initio Studies of Stratospheric Ozone Depletion Chemistry

An overview of the current understanding of ozone depletion chemistry, particularly with regards the formation of the so-called Antarctic ozone hole, will be presented together with an outline as to how ab initio quantum chemistry can be used to further our understanding of stratospheric chemistry. The ability of modern state-of-the art ab initio quantum chemical techniques to characterize reliably the gas-phase molecular structure, vibrational spectrum, electronic spectrum, and thermal stability of fluorine, chlorine, bromine and nitrogen oxide species will be demonstrated by presentation of some example studies. The ab initio results will be shown to be in excellent agreement with the available experimental data, and where the experimental data are either not known or are inconclusive, the theoretical results are shown to fill in the gaps and to resolve experimental controversies. In addition, ab initio studies in which the electronic spectra and the characterization of excited electronic states of halogen oxide species will also be presented. Again where available, the ab initio results are compared to experimental observations, and are used to aid in the interpretation of experimental studies.

Small Business Innovations

Under a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract to Kennedy Space Center, EIC Laboratories invented a Raman Spectrograph with fiber optic sampling for space applications such as sensing hazardous fuel vapors and making on-board rapid analyses of chemicals and minerals. Raman spectroscopy is a laser-based measurement technique that provides through a unique vibrational spectrum a molecular 'fingerprint,' and can function in aqueous environments. EIC combined optical fiber technology with Raman methods to develop sensors that can be operated at a distance from the spectrographic analysis instruments and the laser excitation source. EIC refined and commercialized the technology to create the Fiber Optic Raman Spectrograph and the RamanProbe. Commercial applications range from process control to monitoring hazardous materials.

Conceptual Design of the Nuclear Electronic Xenon Ion System (NEXIS)

In support of the NEXIS program, Aerojet-Redmond Operations, with review and input from the JPL and Boeing, has completed the design for a development model (DM) discharge chamber assembly and main discharge cathode assembly. These efforts along with the work by JPL to develop the carbon-carbon-composite ion optics assembly have resulted in a complete ion engine design. The goal of the NEXIS program is to significantly advance the current state of the art by developing an ion engine capable of operating at an input power of 20kW, an Isp of 7500 sec and have a total xenon through put capability of 2000 kg. In this paper we will describe the methodology used to design the discharge chamber and cathode assemblies and describe the resulting final design. Specifics will include the concepts used for the mounting of the ion optics along with the concepts used for the gimbal mounts. In addition, we will present results of a vibrational analysis showing how the engine will respond to a typical Delta IV heavy vibration spectrum.

Python & Qt, Powerful Tools for Technical Computing

The objective of this presentation is to give a brief overview of Python computer language and Qt for Python which provides an interface to Python for building graphical applications. The Qt language provides a method for rapid programming of Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs) that are highly scalable, robust and platform independent. Both Python and Qt provide a powerful set of tools for Dynamic Analysis which are based on Open-Source software. Many problems and calculations in Structural Dynamics such as Power Spectral Density, Shock Response Spectrum and Vibration Response Spectrum can be easily calculated using these tools. The advantage of using Open-Source software is the ability to create custom graphical user interfaces similar to Matlab without the expense of software licensing and the ability to customize the software to an organization's specific needs. Also, another advantage is the ability to know which algorithms are being used by the GUI, know the numerical limitations and scale to large size data sets. I will end the presentation by demonstrating a Structural Dynamics GUI I created that was designed primarily to interactively analyze Post Flight high speed data provided by the ground station telemetry networks.

Synthesis of vibration systems, having group symmetry or quasi-symmetry, according to the frequency spectrum

Torsional vibration systems, with finite numbers of degrees of freedom are investigated. In designing such systems, it is important to select parameters, so that the frequency spectrum of the natural vibrations is beyond the limits of the resonance danger region. In the case when the system has a large number of degrees of freedom, calculation of its natural frequencies, as well as tuning out the resonance danger zones is laborious. When the system being investigated has one group symmetry or another, solution of the problem mentioned above is facilitated, as a consequence of breaking down the frequency equations into several, which are smaller in size. An algorithm is given for tuning out the natural frequency spectrum from the forbidden region, by means of varying the rigidity of systems having group symmetries or group quasi-symmetries.
