EPCAPE-PT-LANL Measurements: Aerodynamic Part Sizer

Coastal cities offer a unique environment for studying aerosol-cloud interactions and the effects of urban emissions on cloud properties. As part of the Eastern Pacific Cloud Aerosol Precipitation Experiment (EPCAPE), the Partitioning Thrust by Los Alamos National Laboratory (EPCAPE-PT-LANL) was conducted. Our campaign focused on measuring the optical and chemical properties of aerosols and their interactions within marine stratocumulus clouds in La Jolla, California. EPCAPE-PT-LANL enhances the primary goals of EPCAPE through innovative observations of vapor-phase transitions between aerosols and cloud droplets, the impact of black carbon on aerosol-cloud dynamics, and the effects of cloud processing on aerosol optical properties. Instrument: Aerodynamic particle sizer (TSI) Files data_10min_APS.csv Header: - List [0.54 to 19.81] middle of the size bin in microns: Data reports the concentration particles in this size bin per cubic centimeter, dN/dLog(dp). - CVI_Flag[bool]: A boolean flag indicating whether the Counterflow Virtual Impactor (CVI) was active (true) or inactive (false) during the measurement.

High-Fidelity Simulation Aerodynamics Dataset of NACA 0012 and 0021 Airfoils

The repository contains time series data of pressure, viscous and moment forces for the NACA 0012 and 0021 airfoils at angles of attack (AOA), 5, 17, 30, 45, 60 and 90 degrees. The data was generated during the high-fidelity simulations of the airfoils using the open-source CFD code, Nalu-Wind (https://github.com/Exawind/nalu-wind). The research objective was to study the effects of mesh resolution and turbulence model on the three-dimensional deep stall aerodynamics of the airfoils, which has been published in the Journal of Turbulence (https://doi.org/10.1080/14685248.2023.2225141). Several meshes of the O-grid type were generated using the modified Pointwise Glyph script of Carrigan (https://github.com/pointwise/AirfoilMesh) by varying the wall normal and spanwise resolutions. Note that, the geometry was extruded by four chord lengths in the spanwise direction. In the paper, we showed that Improved Delayed Detached Eddy Simulation (IDDES) hybrid RANS/LES turbulence model with a minimum of 24 cells per chord length in the spanwise direction is necessary to correctly predict the loads in the deep stall regime. Under the NACA 0012 airfoil directory, the data for several combinations of wall-normal and spanwise resolutions are presented in each of the AOA subdirectories. The corresponding experimental data for the lift and drag polars can be found in the "exp_data" subdirectory. The directory for the NACA 0021 airfoil consists of CFD force data and airfoil polars for Reynolds numbers 2.7e5 and 2.0e6.

Aerodynamic Rotor Design for a 25 MW Offshore Downwind Turbine

Continuously increasing offshore wind turbine scales require rotor designs that maximize power and performance. Downwind rotors offer advantages in lower mass due to reduced potential for tower strike, and is especially true at large scales, e.g., for a 25 MW turbine. In this study, three 25 MW downwind rotors, each with different prescribed lift coefficient distributions were designed (chord, geometry, and twist) and compared to maximize power production at unprecedented scales and Reynolds numbers, including a new approach to optimize rotor tilt and coning based on aeroelastic effects. To achieve this objective the design process was focused on achieving high power coefficients, while maximizing swept area and minimizing blade mass. Maximizing swept area was achieved by prescribing pre-cone and shaft tilt angles to ensure the aeroelastic orientation when the blades point upwards was nearly vertical at nearly rated conditions. Maximizing the power coefficient was achieved by prescribing axial induction factor and lift coefficient distributions which were then used as inputs for an inverse rotor design tool. The resulting rotors were then simulated to compare performance and subsequently optimized for minimum rotor mass. To achieve these goals, a high Reynolds number design space was developed using computational predictions as well as new empirical correlations for flatback airfoil drag and maximum lift. Within this design space, three rotors of small, medium and large chords were considered for clean airfoil conditions (effects of premature transition were also considered but did not significantly modify the design space). The results indicated that the medium chord design provided the best performance, producing the highest power in Region 2 from simulations while resulting in the lowest rotor mass, both of which support minimum LCOE. The methodology developed herein can be used for the design of other extreme-scale (upwind and downwind) turbines.

Aerodynamic Analysis of Wind Loading on Parabolic Trough Collectors Using High-Fidelity CFD Modeling

Wind loading on parabolic solar collector support structures is the key driver for material costs. As identified by NREL's CSP Best Practices project [1], ability to predict wind-loading in deep-arrays and the impact of edge effects has potential to decrease levelized cost of electricity (LCoE) by 15%. In this study, we present a high-fidelity computational model that can model the flow around deep arrays of parabolic troughs under varying turbulent inflow conditions. Ability to accurately reproduce atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) profiles is first demonstrated through Large Eddy Simulation (LES) simulations and compared against wind tunnel measurements. Thereafter, unsteady turbulent flow past single row and six row configurations is computed using hybrid RANS/LES simulations. Investigations of wind loading, through parametric tilt angle variations of single row and on waked collectors in six-row configuration, are used to highlight design considerations for parabolic troughs only possible through high-fidelity unsteady calculations.

G2Aero (Separable shape tensors for aerodynamic design) [SWR-22-44]

G2Aero is a flexible and practical tool for design and deformation of 2D airfoils and 3D blades using data-driven approaches. G2Aero utilizes the geometry of matrix manifolds—specifically the Grassmannian—to build a novel framework for representing physics-based separable deformations of shapes. G2Aero offers the flexibility to generate perturbations in a customizable way over any portion of the blade. The G2Aero framework utilizes data-driven methods based on a curated database of physically relevant airfoils. Specific tools include: - principal geodesic analysis over normal coordinate neighborhoods of matrix manifolds; - a variety of data-regularized deformations to nominal 2D airfoil shapes; - Riemannian interpolation connecting a sequence of airfoil cross-sections to build 3D blades from 2D data; - consistent perturbations over the span of interpolated 3D blades based on dominant modes from the data-driven analysis.
