Evaluation of Oak Ridge National Laboratory Health Physics Research Reactor Operation Data for Critical Benchmark Creation [Slides]

During the evaluation of Oak Ridge National Laboratory Health Physics Research Reactor operation data for critical benchmark creation, a detailed, functional SCALE model was built, and experimental data was evaluated for the creation of a critical benchmark. The estimated experimental uncertainty is about 3800 pcm, which is considered very high. The relative difference between expected and calculated keff values is about 1.5 %, also considered very high. It was concluded that a good quality critical benchmark worthy of the ICSBEP standards cannot be created from HPRR data in the present conditions. Locating the HPRR fuel to obtain an uncertainty on the density would aid in solving this issue.

A bi-level data-driven framework for fault-detection and diagnosis of HVAC systems

Long-term operation of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems will eventually lead to a range of HVAC system failures, resulting in excessive energy consumption and maintenance costs. Here, to avoid HVAC malfunctioning, fault detection diagnostic (FDD) is utilized as a common practice. Machine learning methods have lately received considerable interest for FDD analysis of HVAC systems due to their high detection accuracy. Meanwhile, HVAC malfunctions are regarded as rare occurrences, hence normal operating data samples are much more accessible than data samples in faulty and malfunctioning conditions. The dominating frequency of normal operation in HVAC datasets has also led to heavily biased classification algorithms within the literature. Moreover, the focus of previous literature has been on increasing the accuracy of the models which leads to a high number of false positives (misleading alarms) in the system. In order to enhance the performance of diagnostic procedures and fill the mentioned gaps, this study proposes a novel data-driven framework. A bi-level machine learning framework is developed for diagnosing faults in air handling units (AHUs) and rooftop units (RTUs) based on principal component analysis (PCA), time series anomaly detection, and random forest (RF). It is shown that PCA can reduce the dataset dimension with one principal component accounting for 95% of data variance. Also, the random forest could classify the faults with 89% precision for single-zone AHU, 85% precision for RTU, and 79% for multi-zone AHU. By proposing this framework, three persistent challenges are addressed: (I) minimizing false positives; (II) accounting for data imbalance; and (III) normal condition monitoring of equipment.

Microcam: A Low Power and Privacy Preserving Multi-modal Platform for Occupancy Detection (Final Report)

Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) consumes a significant portion of the energy used in buildings. Much of this is wasted energy, used when buildings are either not occupied at all, or occupied well under their maximum design conditions. This project has focused on residential occupancy detection to autonomously control HVAC systems and save energy. Limitations of existing occupancy sensors include one or more of the following: (i) they employ sensors or algorithms that are not able to detect stationary occupants; (ii) they cannot classify the source of the motion (such as a pet); (iii) depending on the camera resolution and employed algorithms, they do not allow for embedded or onboard computation, and require external or cloud-based processing; (iv) many algorithms developed for camera-based systems are sensitive to lighting changes, and thus prone to missed detections or false alarms; (v) Most existing systems depend on adjustment of settings for different scenarios, complicating self-commissioning; (vi) they cannot provide high enough accuracy; (vii) they are costly; (viii) they are not battery-powered, thus limiting ease of use and installation. In this project, Syracuse University and its partner SRI have developed a low-cost, high accuracy, standalone residential occupancy sensing platform, referred to as the MicroCam, to address all of the aforementioned challenges. MicroCam can operate on typical alkaline batteries without relying on the “cloud” or external computing resources, and consists of low-power, Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based, IoT platforms. Each platform has multi-modal sensors and can process motion, audio and video data, and send binary occupancy result to a lead platform. All sensor data is processed locally on platforms, and the only transmitted data is the binary occupancy state. In addition, preliminary work has been done on images wherein occupants are not discernable. Thus, MicroCam is a standalone solution preserving privacy of the occupants.

CPAP Ventilators Needed for Rapid Response to COVID-19 by Modification of CPAP Equipment

Early on in the COVID-19 pandemic, potential ventilator shortages were a critical issue identified by national health care providers. Capacity modeling at the time suggested patient demand may exceed ventilator supply. Thus, the challenge became finding an urgent interim solution to meet health care needs. Our initial hypothesis was that CPAP technology could be modified to provide similar functionality to a ventilator, relieving demand and allowing physicians to decide which patients need high end machines, ultimately saving lives. In conjunction with medical experts and pulmonologists, we were able to identify three key thrusts associated with this research problem: (1) modification of CPAP technology to allow for 02 input that would be capable of providing ventilation; (2) development of an alarming function that would provide real-time audible alarms to alert medical personnel to critical conditions, which would be used inline with CPAP technology; and (3) a method of sterilizing expiratory air from such a system in order to protect medical personnel from biohazard, since CPAPs vent to the atmosphere. We were unable to realize results for thrust 1 (CPAP modification for 02); we identified potential safety issues associated with utilizing medical grade oxygen with a common CPAP device. In order to characterize and mitigate these issues, we would need to partner closely with a device manufacturer; such a partnership could not be achieved in the timeframe needed for this rapid response work. However, we determined that some medical grade BiPAP devices do not need this modification and that the significant progress on thrusts 2 and 3 would be sufficient to buy down risk of a massive ventilator shortage. Our team built a prototype alarm system that can be utilized with any assistive respiratory device to alert on all key conditions identified by medical personnel (high pressure, low pressure, apnea, loss of power, low battery). Finally, our team made significant progress in the rapid prototyping and demonstration of an inline UV air purifier device. The device is cost efficient and can be manufactured at scale with both commercially available and additively manufactured parts. Initial tests with SARS-CoV-2 analog bacteriophage MS2 show 99% efficacy at reducing bioburden. Following a successful demonstration of the prototype device with medical personnel, we were able to obtain follow-on (non-LDRD) funding to provide additional device characterization, validation, and production in order to respond to an immediate regional need.

Control Systems Design for STS Accelerator

The Second Target Station (STS) Project will expand the capabilities of the existing Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), with a suite of neutron instruments optimized for long wavelengths. A new accelerator transport line will be built to deliver one out of four SNS pulses to the new target station. The Integrated Control Systems (ICS) will provide remote control, monitoring, OPI, alarms, and archivers for the accelerator systems, such as magnets power supply, vacuum devices, and beam instrumentation. The ICS will upgrade the existing Linac LLRF controls to allow independent operation of the FTS and STS and support different power levels of the FTS and STS proton beam. The ICS accelerator controls are in the phase of preliminary design for the control systems of magnet power supply, vacuum, LLRF, Timing, Machine protection system (MPS), and computing and machine network. The accelerator control systems build upon the existing SNS Machine Control systems, use the SNS standard hardware and EPICS software, and take full advantage of the performance gains delivered by the PPU Project at SNS.

(Paper) TRIPWIRE: Multi-modal Distributed Sensing For Repository Verification

Underground geological repositories for storing used nuclear fuel are being planned and developed around the world. Research is being performed to understand technical aspects of sealing entombed materials and underground repositories to ensure the radiological and nuclear materials remain contained. To support safeguards verification for these facilities research at Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is underway to develop and demonstrate a multi-modal sensor system, TRIPWIRE, for containment verification in inaccessible radiological and nuclear waste repositories. The TRIPWIRE system will continuously monitor ionizing radiation and electromagnetic fields in the vicinity of emplaced nuclear materials buried in a repository, reporting on disturbances with a real-time alarm control station. The system will use long-length scintillating fiber bundles (SFBs) to perform area radiation monitoring; these will be coupled to kilometer-scale multimodal optical communication fibers – all light sensors and electronic components used with this system will be located above ground. Electromagnetic fields, and changes in local dielectric conditions caused by intrusion and soil movement, will be monitored using commercial grade, ported "leaky" coaxial cables (PCCs), with control electronics also located above ground. Tamper-indicating self-diagnostic assessments will be done using optical and electronic time domain reflectometry in the SFBs and PCCs, respectively. The result will be a long, kilometer-scale multi-modal SFB-PCC system. Simulation and modeling are being used to inform the work and a demonstration of the system's utility is planned at a nuclear storage facility in the future.

Evaluating Probability of Assessment for Central Alarm Station Operators

This project focused on developing and analyzing a method that could be employed by operational nuclear facilities to evaluate their CAS operators and determine a probability of assessment for each operator. This method is agnostic of alarm communication and display system (AC&D), sensors and cameras in place in the field, and any other technical security measures. This security-measure-agnostic method enables operational facilities to adopt it to determine the effectiveness of their alarm station operators.

Enhancements and Deployment of the TDAQ System for the Mu2e Experiment

The Real Time Processing Systems Division at Fermilab has deployed new features to the Off-The-Shelf Data Acquisition framework (otsdaq) for the Mu2e experiment. The Mu2e experiment will search for the coherent neutrino-less conversion of a muon into an electron in the field of an aluminum nucleus with a sensitivity improvement of 10,000 times over existing limits. Such a charged lepton flavor-violating reaction probes new physics at a scale unavailable at present or planned high-energy colliders. The Mu2e Trigger and Data Acquisition (TDAQ) system uses otsdaq as its online Data Acquisition System (DAQ) framework. otsdaq integrates the artdaq and art frameworks for event transfer, filtering, and processing. otsdaq is a web-based DAQ software suite focusing on flexibility and scalability and provides a multi-user interface accessible through a web browser. artdaq handles the entire data stream, which is read over the peripheral component interconnect express (PCIe) bus to a software filter algorithm that selects events combined with the data flux coming from a cosmic-ray veto (CRV) system. Detector front-ends are configured through the PCIe bus by customized otsdaq plugins. The otsdaq slow controls infrastructure has been further developed using the experimental physics and industrial control system (EPICS) open-source platform for monitoring, controlling, alarming, and archiving. The detector control system (DCS) for Mu2e has been integrated into otsdaq. The production TDAQ and DCS system has been deployed at the experimental hall and is being debugged and optimized for experiment operations. We report on the feature enhancements and deployment of otsdaq for Mu2e.

The detector Read Out Controller (ROC), from the tracker and calorimeter, stream out zero-suppressed data continuously to the Data Transfer Controller (DTC). Data is then read over the PCIe bus to a software filter algorithm that selects events which are finally combined with the data flux that comes froma Cosmic Ray Ve to System (CRV). A Detector Control System (DCS) for monitoring, controlling, alarming, and archiving has been developed using the Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System (EPICS) Open Source Platform. The DCS System has also been itegrated into otsdaq. The installation of the TDAQ and the DCS systems in the Mu2e building is planned for 2021-2022, and a prototype has been built at Fermilab's Feynman Computing Center. We report here on the developments and achievements of the integration of Mu2e's DCS system into the online otsdaq software.
