Ultralow-Loading Pt/Zn Hybrid Cluster in Zeolite HZSM-5 for Efficient Dehydroaromatization

Minimizing Pt loading without sacrificing catalytic performance is critical, particularly for designing cost-efficient hydrocarbon transformation catalysts. Here, we show that ultralow-loading (0.001–0.05 wt %) Pt- and Zn-functionalized HZSM-5 catalysts, prepared through simple ion exchange and impregnation, are highly active and stable for light alkane dehydroaromatization (DHA). The specific activity of benzene, toluene, and xylene is up to 8.2 mol/g Pt /min (or 1592 min –1 ) over the 0.001 wt % Pt–Zn 2 /HZSM-5 catalyst during ethane DHA at 550 °C under atmospheric pressure. Additionally, such bimetallic Pt x –Zn y /HZSM-5 catalysts are highly stable in contrast to the monometallic Pt/HZSM-5 catalysts. The rate constant of deactivation (k deactiv ), according to the first-order generalized power law equation model, for the bimetallic catalysts is up to 120 times lower than that of the monometallic counterparts, depending on the Pt loading. In conclusion, this breakthrough is achieved through the formation of the [Pt 1 –Zn n ] δ+ hybrid cluster, instead of Pt 0 cluster–proton adducts, in the micropores of the ZSM-5 zeolite.

Structural and Reactivity Effects of Secondary Metal Doping into Iron-Nitrogen-Carbon Catalysts for Oxygen Electroreduction

While improved activity was recently reported for bimetallic iron-metal-nitrogen-carbon (FeMNC) catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in acid medium, the nature of active sites and interactions between the two metals are poorly understood. Here, FeSnNC and FeCoNC catalysts were structurally and catalytically compared to their parent FeNC and SnNC catalysts. While CO cryo-chemisorption revealed a twice lower site density of M-N x sites for FeSnNC and FeCoNC relative to FeNC and SnNC, the mass activity of both bimetallic catalysts is 50–100% higher than that of FeNC due to a larger turnover frequency in the bimetallic catalysts. Electron microscopy and X-ray absorption spectroscopy identified the coexistence of Fe-N x and Sn-N x or Co-N x sites, while no evidence was found for binuclear Fe-M-N x sites. 57 Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy revealed that the bimetallic catalysts feature a higher D 1 /D 2 ratio of the spectral signatures assigned to two distinct Fe-N x sites, relative to the FeNC parent catalyst. Furthermore, the addition of the secondary metal favored the formation of D 1 sites, associated with the higher turnover frequency.

Luminescent Bimetallic Two-Coordinate Gold(I) Complexes Utilizing Janus Carbenes

A series of bimetallic carbene-metal-amide (cMa) complexes have been prepared with bridging biscarbene ligands to serve as a model for the design of luminescent materials with large oscillator strengths and small energy differences between the singlet and triplet states (ΔE ST ). The complexes have a general structure (R 2 N)Au(:carbene—carbene:)Au(NR 2 ). The bimetallic complexes show solvation-dependent absorption and emission that is analyzed in detail. It is found that the molar absorptivity of the bimetallic complexes is correlated with the energy barrier to rotation of the metal–ligand bond. The bimetallic cMa complexes also exhibit short emission lifetimes (τ = 200–300 ns) with high photoluminescence efficiencies (Φ PL > 95%). The radiative rates of bimetallic cMa complexes are 3–4 times faster than that of the corresponding monometallic complexes. Analysis of temperature-dependent luminescence data indicates that the lifetime for the singlet state (τS 1 ) of bimetallic cMa complexes is near 12 ns with a ΔE ST of 40–50 meV. Here the presented compounds provide a general design for cMa complexes to achieve small values for ΔE ST while retaining high radiative rates. Solution-processed organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs) made using two of the complexes as luminescent dopants show high efficiency and low roll-off at high luminance.
