Centrosymmetric or Noncentrosymmetric? Transition Metals Talking in K 2 TGe 3 S 8 (T = Co, Fe)

Two new quaternary sulfides K 2 TGe 3 S 8 (T=Co, Fe) have been synthesized by a high-temperature solid-state routine and flux growth method. The crystal growth process of K 2 TGe 3 S 8 (T=Co, Fe) was elucidated by in-situ powder X-ray diffraction and DSC thermal analysis. The mm-sized crystals of K 2 TGe 3 S 8 (T=Co, Fe) were grown. K 2 CoGe 3 S 8 crystallizes in a new structure type in centrosymmetric space group P1¯ (No. 2) with unit cell parameters of a = 7.016(1) Å, b = 7.770(1)Å, c = 14.342(1) Å, α = 93.80(1)°, β = 92.65(1)°, γ = 114.04(1)°. K 2 FeGe 3 S 8 crystallizes in K 2 FeGe 3 Se 8 structure type and the noncentrosymmetric space group P2 1 (No. 4) with unit cell parameters of a = 7.1089(5)Å, b = 11.8823(8)Å, c = 16.7588(11)Å, β = 96.604(2)°. There is a high structural similarity between K 2 CoGe 3 S 8 and K 2 FeGe 3 S 8 . The larger volume coupled with higher degrees of distortion of [FeS 4 ] tetrahedra compared to [CoS 4 ] tetrahedra accounts for the structure’s shift from centrosymmetric to noncentrosymmetric. The theory simulation confirms that [TS 4 ]T= Co or Fe tetrahedra play a crucial role in controlling the structure and properties of K 2 TGe 3 S 8 (T = Co, Fe). The measured optical bandgaps of K 2 CoGe 3 S 8 and K 2 FeGe 3 S 8 are 2.1(1) eV and 2.6(1) eV respectively. K 2 FeGe 3 S 8 shows antiferromagnetic ordering at 24K while no magnetic ordering was detected in K 2 CoGe 3 S 8 . In conclusion, the magnetic measurements also demonstrate the divalent nature of transition metals in K 2 TGe 3 S 8 (T = Co, Fe).

Spatially Resolved Performance Analysis for Perovskite Solar Cells

This review explores the current state of the art in spatially resolved characterization of mixed-halide perovskite solar cells. As the size of perovskite cells and modules continues to grow, quantification of the spatial distribution of key cell parameters will become increasingly valuable in predicting ultimate cell-level performance and tracking process homogeneity. Here, both high resolution microscopic approaches using scanning techniques and camera-based methods for full-area cell and/or module analysis are discussed. The value of this local data in predicting performance losses at the cell level is particularly emphasized. Measurable physical parameters sensitive to losses of voltage, current, fill factor, and efficiency are discussed together with selected experimental results. It is demonstrated that a combination of spatially resolved cell parameter mapping/imaging can be used to quantitatively discriminate various loss contributions at high resolution. The impact and control of inhomogeneities become particularly important when upscaling from small devices to large formats compatible with industrial mass production.

The Zintl phases A In 2 As 2 (A = Ca, Sr, Ba): new topological insulators and thermoelectric material candidates

Recently, there has been a lot of interest in topological insulators (TIs), being electronic materials, which are insulating in their bulk but with the gapless exotic metallic state on their surface. The surface states observed in such materials behave as a perfect conductor thereby making them more suited for several cutting-edge technological applications such as spintronic devices. Here, we report the synthesis and structural characterization of the Zintl phases AIn 2 As 2 (A = Ca, Sr, Ba), which could become a new class of TIs. Crystal structure elucidation by single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that CaIn 2 As 2 and SrIn 2 As 2 are isostructural and crystallize in the EuIn 2 P 2 structure type (space group P6 3 /mmc, no. 194, Z = 2) with unit cell parameters a = 4.1482(6) Å, c = 17.726(4) Å; and a = 4.2222(6) Å, c = 18.110(3) Å, respectively. Their hexagonal structure is made up of alternating [In 2 As 2 ] 2– layers separated by slabs of A 2+ cations. BaIn 2 As 2 on the other hand crystallizes in the monoclinic EuGa 2 P 2 structure type (space group P2/m, no. 10, Z = 4) with unit cell parameters a = 10.2746(11) Å, b = 4.3005(5) Å, c = 13.3317(14) Å and β = 95.569(2)°. This structure is also layered, and it is made up of different type of polyanionic [In 2 As 2 ] 2– units and Ba 2+ cations. The valence electron count for all three compounds adheres to the Zintl-Klemm formalism, and all elements achieve closed-shell electronic configurations. Bulk electronic structure calculations indicate the opening of a bandgap E g ~ 0.03 eV (CaIn 2 As 2 and Sr 2 In 2 As 2 ), and E g ~0.21 eV (BaIn 2 As 2 ) in the absence of strain and spin–orbit coupling (SOC). Furthermore, these results argue in favor of the realization of a nontrivial topological insulator state under the influence of tensile strain and SOC. Preliminary transport properties on BaIn 2 As 2 are suggestive of a degenerate p-type semiconductor—a behavior which is sought after in thermoelectric (TE) materials. Since both TIs and excellent TE materials are known to favor the same material properties such as narrow bandgap, heavy elements, and strong SOC, these three Zintl phases are also projected as candidates TE materials.

Chemical Preparation, Crystal Structure Reinvestigation and Vibrational Study of CoNa 3 P 3 O 10 ·12H 2 O and X-ray Characterization of the New Anhydrous Triphosphate CoNa 3 P 3 O 10

The triphosphate dodecahydrate of cobalt and sodium CoNa 3 P 3 O 10 ·12H 2 O was prepared by the ion exchange resin process. Its structure was studied by X-ray diffraction and determined in the monoclinic space group P12 1 /c1 with the unit-cell parameters a = 14.6650(5) Å, b=9.1916(3) Å, c = 15.0239(5) Å,β =90.2210(10)°, Z = 4 and V = 2025.13(12) Å 3 . The thermal dehydration of this compound was performed, leading to an anhydrous new form, CoNa 3 P 3 O 10 , which was characterized by X-ray diffraction. The obtained CoNa 3 P 3 O 10 crystallized in monoclinic space group P21/n with the unit-cell parameters a=15,3774 Å, b=7,6988 A°, c=14,2832A°, β=92,9115°. The characteristic IR wavenumbers of the P 3 O 10 5- ions observed in the vibrational spectra were calculated using isotopic substitutions, which confirms the existence of these groups in the studied compound. A comparison between the IR and Raman wavenumbers of CoNa 3 P 3 O 10 ·12H 2 O, CoNa 3 P 3 O 10 and Na 5 P 3 O 10 ·12H 2 was performed. A kinetic study was also made for CoNa 3 P 3 O 10 ·12H 2 O.

Summary of high-efficiency solar-cell research

High-efficiency solar-cell activities supporting efforts to achieve the DOE Five-Year Plan goals are summarized. Specific objectives are to identify and resolve key generic problems that limit cell efficiency to below theoretically predicted values and to design and fabricate cells having efficiences equal to or greater than 20% (AM1.5). Theoretical curves for various p-n junction cells were shown. The effects of practical barriers on cell efficiency was depicted along with the modeling parameters. Cell design parameters used in the analyses were described. The usefulness and present limitations of the existing modeling capabilities were presented. The historical evolution of the efficiencies of cells made from web and edge-defined film-fed growth (EFG) silicon ribbons were also described. The status of contemporary higher-efficiency technical capabilities and future activities to raise efficiencies were stated.

Magnetism in EuAlSi and the Eu 1−𝑥 ⁢Sr 𝑥 ⁢ AlSi solid solution solid solution

The magnetic properties of EuAlSi, a compound comprising a honeycomb lattice of Al/Si atoms and a triangular lattice of Eu atoms, are presented. By means of single-crystal x-ray diffraction, we find that EuAlSi crystallizes in an AlB 2 -type structure with space group 𝑃⁢6/mmm and unit cell parameters 𝑎 = 4.2229⁢ (10) ⁢Å and 𝑐 = 4.5268 ⁢(12)⁢ Å. Our magnetic measurements indicate that EuAlSi is a soft ferromagnetic material with 𝑇 Curie = 25.8 K. The susceptibility follows the Curie-Weiss law at high temperatures, which allowed us to determine the paramagnetic Curie temperature 𝜃 𝑃 = 36.2 ⁢(1) ⁢K and an effective magnetic moment 𝜇 eff = 8.07 ⁢(1)⁢ µ 𝐵 /Eu. This value is in agreement with the theoretical value of 7.9 µ 𝐵 for Eu 2+ free ion. Moreover, we have prepared the Eu 1−𝑥 ⁢Sr 𝑥 ⁢ AlSi solid solution, where the atoms in the triangular lattice were systematically exchanged, in order to study the evolution of the collective quantum properties from the ferromagnetic EuAlSi toward the superconducting SrAlSi. Across the Eu 1−𝑥 ⁢Sr 𝑥 AlSi solid solution, the unit cell parameters change linearly, following Vegard’s law, and making the system reliable for studying composition dependence of the interplay between the crystal structure and physical properties. As the Sr content increases, i.e., 𝑥 increases, we note a consistent reduction of 𝜇 eff and 𝑇 Curie . Long-range magnetic order in Eu 1−𝑥 ⁢Sr 𝑥 ⁢ AlSi persists up to 𝑥 = 0.95, whereas superconductivity is only observed for samples with 𝑥 > 0.97.
