Phosphate anion-quaternary ammonium ion pair coordinated polymer membranes

Ion exchange membranes materials according to the present disclosure exhibit improved conductivity at low and intermediate relative humidity without sacrificing mechanical strength. Polymers are provided that include a backbone with one or more aryl groups, a halocarbyl group, and a halocarbyl side chain attached to the backbone, wherein the halocarbyl side chain includes a halide separated from the backbone by a hydrocarbyl chain, a hydrocarbyl ring, or combinations thereof. The halide is substituted with a tertiary amine and halide anions are then exchanged with hydroxide anions. The polymers are then contacted with phosphoric acid, which is deprotonated by the hydroxide ions, forming anions which enhance interactions with adjacent quaternary ammonium groups and induce excess phosphoric acid molecules to cluster around those quaternary ammonium groups. The membranes exhibit negligible dopant leaching even at high relative humidity.

Structures of five salt forms of disulfonated monoazo dyes

The structures of five s -block metal salt forms of three disulfonated monoazo dyes are presented. These are poly[di-μ-aqua-diaqua[μ 4 -3,3'-(diazane-1,2-diyl)bis(benzenesulfonato)]disodium(I)], [Na 2 (C 12 H 8 N 2 O 6 S 2 )(H 2 O) 4 ] n , (I), catena -poly[[tetraaquacalcium(II)]-μ-3,3'-(diazane-1,2-diyl)bis(benzenesulfonato)], [Ca(C 12 H 8 N 2 O 6 S 2 )(H 2 O) 4 ] n , (II), catena -poly[[[diaquacalcium(II)]-μ-2-(4-amino-3-sulfonatophenyl)-1-(4-sulfonatophenyl)diazenium] dihydrate], {[Na(C 12 H 10 N 3 O 6 S 2 )(H 2 O) 2 ]·2H 2 O} n , (III), hexaaquamagnesium bis[2-(4-amino-3-sulfonatophenyl)-1-(4-sulfonatophenyl)diazenium] octahydrate, [Mg(H 2 O) 6 ](C 12 H 10 N 3 O 6 S 2 ) 2 ·8H 2 O, (IV), and poly[[{μ 2 -4-[2-(4-amino-2-methyl-5-methoxyphenyl)diazen-1-yl]benzene-1,3-disulfonato}di-μ-aqua-diaquabarium(II)] dihydrate], {[Ba(C 14 H 13 N 3 O 7 S 2 )(H 2 O) 4 ]·2H 2 O} n , (V). Compound (III) is that obtained on crystallizing the commercial dyestuff Acid Yellow 9 [74543-21-8]. The Mg species is a solvent-separated ion-pair structure and the others are all coordination polymers with bonds from the metal atoms to sulfonate groups. Compound (I) is a three-dimensional coordination polymer, (V) is a two-dimensional coordination polymer and both (II) and (III) are one-dimensional coordination polymers. The coordination behaviour of the azo ligands and the water ligands, the dimensionality of the coordination polymers and the overall packing motifs of these five structures are contrasted to those of monosulfonate monoazo congers. It is found that (I) and (II) adopt similar structural types to those of monosulfonate species but that the other three structures do not.

In situ mechanical reinforcement of polymer hydrogels via metal-coordinated crosslink mineralization

Biological organic-inorganic materials remain a popular source of inspiration for bioinspired materials design and engineering. Inspired by the self-assembling metal-reinforced mussel holdfast threads, we tested if metal-coordinate polymer networks can be utilized as simple composite scaffolds for direct in situ crosslink mineralization. Starting with aqueous solutions of polymers end-functionalized with metal-coordinating ligands of catechol or histidine, here we show that inter-molecular metal-ion coordination complexes can serve as mineral nucleation sites, whereby significant mechanical reinforcement is achieved upon nanoscale particle growth directly at the metal-coordinate network crosslink sites.

Combining coordination and chelation moieties to engineer a new linker for lanthanide coordination chemistry

Organic linkers play a crucial role in constructing lanthanide (Ln) coordination polymers (CPs), influencing structural topologies and physicochemical properties. Herein, we introduce 6-oxo-1,6-dihydro-2,5-pyridinedicarboxylic acid (2,5-H 3 PODC) as a new ligand for constructing lanthanide coordination polymers that integrates the structural features of terephthalic acid with the chelation capabilities of pyridinone-based functional groups. Six lanthanide-based coordination polymers were synthesized with 2,5-H 3 PODC, forming two types of CPs – type 1: [Ln(HPODC)(Ox) 0.5 (H 2 O) 2 ] (where (Ox) = oxalic acid and Ln = Pr 3+ (1), Nd 3+ (2)) and type 2: [Ln(H 2 PODC)(HPODC)(H 2 O)] (Ln = Eu 3+ (3), Gd 3+ (4), Dy 3+ (5), Er 3+ (6)). All compounds were structurally characterized by single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, and both compound types are 2D ladder-like networks with cem topologies where the trivalent metal centers are bridged via HPODC 2− and Ox 2− ligands in type 1 structures and H 2 PODC − and HPODC 2− linkers in type 2 structures. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) demonstrated that the metal–organic networks of type 1 and type 2 compounds exhibit distinct decomposition patterns, and the photoluminescent properties of 3 were also examined, revealing efficient ligand based sensitization and characteristic emission bands for Eu(III).

Template-free fabrication of fractal porous Y 2 O 3 monolithic foam and its functional modification by Ni-doping

Fractal structures which display nearly the same character at every scale exist widely in nature, however, it is still a great challenge to fabricate a fractal nanostructure. Herein, a Y 2 O 3 monolith with unique hierarchically fractal porous structure was fabricated via calcination of a fractal porous coordination polymer precursor. The monolith exhibits porous feature with the pore-size ranging from micrometers to nanometers. Interestingly, each level of the pore-wall is composed of secondary porous structures, whose pore-wall is composed of sub-level self-similar porous feature. Moreover, by Ni-doping in the coordination polymer precursor, fractal porous Ni@Y 2 O 3 was prepared, and exhibited enhanced activity in ethanol steam reforming compared with that of a common supported NiO catalyst.

Coordination Stoichiometry Effects on the Binding Hierarchy of Histamine and Imidazole–M 2+ Complexes

Histidine–M 2+ coordination bonds are a recognized bond motif in biogenic materials with high hardness and extensibility, which has led to growing interest in their use in soft materials for mechanical function. However, the effect of different metal ions on the stability of the coordination complex remains poorly understood, complicating their implementation in metal-coordinated polymer materials. Herein, rheology experiments and density functional theory calculations are used to characterize the stability of coordination complexes and establish the binding hierarchy of histamine and imidazole with Ni 2+ , Cu 2+ , and Zn 2+ . It is found that the binding hierarchy is driven by the specific affinity of the metal ions to different coordination states, which can be macroscopically tuned by changing the metal-to-ligand stoichiometry of the metal-coordinated network. These findings facilitate the rational selection of metal ions for optimizing the mechanical properties of metal-coordinated materials.

Americium Oxalate: An Experimental and Computational Investigation of Metal–Ligand Bonding

A novel actinide-containing coordination polymer, [Am(C 2 O 4 )(H 2 O) 3 Cl] (Am-1), has been synthesized and structurally characterized. The crystallographic analysis reveals that the structure is two-dimensional and comprised of pseudo-dimeric Am 3+ nodes that are bridged by oxalate ligands to form sheets. Each metal center is nine-coordinate, forming a distorted capped square antiprism geometry with a C 1 symmetry, and features bound oxalate, aqua, and chloro ligands. The Am 3+ –ligand bonds were probed computationally using the quantum theory of atoms in molecules nd natural localized molecular orbital approaches to investigate the underlying mechanisms and hybrid atomic orbital contributions therein. The analyses indicate that the bonds within Am-1 are predominantly ionic and the 5f shell of the Am 3+ metal centers does not add a significant covalent contribution to the bonds. Further, our bonding assessment is supported by measurements on the optical properties of Am-1 using diffuse reflectance and photoluminescence spectroscopies. The position of the principal absorption band at 507 nm ( 5 L 6' ← 7 F 0' ) is notable because it is consistent with previously reported americium oxalate complexes in solution, indicating similarities in the electronic structure and ionic bonding. Compound Am-1 is an active phosphor, featuring strong bright-blue oxalate-based luminescence with no evidence of metal-centered emission.

Corrosion resistant hot melt adhesive to bind metals

Hot melt adhesives (HMAs) play an important role in many industries, and their demand is expected to grow. HMAs don't require any solvents, and their application results in the formation of strong bonds with the substrate upon cooling within seconds. These properties differentiate them from liquid glues and make them preferable for practical application. Currently, commercial HMAs are used in bonding lightweight materials such as paper, polymers, and cartons, and have limited usage in areas necessitating the bonding of heavier objects like metals. Here, in this study, we report a design and testing of versatile platform comprising an ion-coordinating polymer and ionic fillers for performance optimization and understanding of structure–property relationships, enabling the rational design of HMAs with improved adhesion to metal surfaces. All-atom Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and various characterization methods are used to elucidate the adhesion mechanism in model composite system containing polyethylene oxide mixed with chemically diverse salt particles. The maximum adhesion strength is found in composites with Al(OH) 3 and FeCl 3 fillers. Interestingly, the presence of Al(OH) 3 also provides a multifunctional anticorrosion property as measured electrochemically using the Tafel method. The discovered path to formulations with improved adhesion to metal surfaces constitutes an important step toward advancing HMAs for use in the structural and semi-structural metal work domain.

Broadening the scope of high structural dimensionality nanomaterials using pyridine-based curcuminoids

We present a new heteroditopic ligand (3pyCCMoid) that contains the typical skeleton of a curcuminoid (CCMoid) decorated with two 3-pyridyl groups. The coordination of 3pyCCMoid with ZnII centres results in a set of novel coordination polymers (CPs) that display different architectures and dimensionalities (from 1D to 3D). Our work analyses how synthetic methods and slight changes in the reaction conditions affect the formation of the final materials. Great efforts have been devoted toward understanding the coordination entities that provide high dimensional systems, with emphasis on the characterization of 2D materials, including analyses of different types of substrates, stability and exfoliation in water. Here, we foresee the great use of CCMoids in the field of CPs and emphasize 3pyCCMoid as a new-born linker.

Cation–polymer interactions and local heterogeneity determine the relative order of alkali cation diffusion coefficients in PEGDA hydrogels

Current research efforts are focused on endowing polymer membranes with ion–ion selectivity by incorporating ion–polymer interactions into materials to bias the selective partitioning and or diffusivity of one species over another. However, little is known about the impact of such interactions on the mechanisms of ion transport. In this study, we probe the influence of cation–polymer interactions on cation, anion, and salt diffusivity in a model membrane material, poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) by modeling concentrated polyethylene oxide solutions via molecular dynamics simulations. These results are compared to published experimental data for LiCl, NaCl, and KCl diffusion in PEGDA. Experimentally, the order of salt and cation diffusion coefficients for LiCl, NaCl, and KCl deviate from the order in aqueous solutions. Here, simulations identify these deviations to arise from cation–polymer coordination in the membrane. Both the fraction of bound cations and the average binding lifetime increases with decreasing cation hydration free energy (moving down the alkali series), leading to different diffusivity trends in the membrane compared to solution. However, to recover the experimentally observed order of diffusivities cations and salt in our simulations, we needed to incorporate membrane heterogeneity explicitly via a polymer charge scaling procedure. Together, our results indicate that cation–polymer interactions, as well as spatial heterogeneity within the membrane, play a critical role in dictating the observed order of alkali cation and salt diffusion coefficients in membranes.

Ligand Influence on Indium–Sulfide Cluster Formation and Reactivity

An indium–sulfide tetramer ([InMe 2 (SSiMe 3 )] 4 ), which contains reactive silyl and methyl groups, is shown to be an isolable intermediate in cluster synthesis. The reactive groups allow it to act as a synthon in the formation of multinuclear indium–sulfide architectures, evidenced by the crystallization of a coordination polymer ([In 20 S 14 Me 32 (4,4’-bpy) 5 ·5CH 2 Cl 2 ] n ) utilizing In 10 S 7 clusters as nodes. The reaction between trimethylindium (InMe 3 ) and bis(trimethylsilyl)sulfide (S(SiMe 3 ) 2 ) is explored with and without the presence of a ligating bipyridine. In both cases, a sulfide-indium adduct is formed, which slowly converts into a multimetallic complex. Here, the ligand 2,2’-bipyridine (2,2’-bpy) is coordinated to InMe 3 to form the adduct InMe 3 (bpy), which upon addition of sulfide, eliminates tetramethylsilane (TMS) and binds two additional InMe 3 moieties (InMe 2 (bpy)(μ 3 -SSiMe 3 )(InMe 3 ) 2 ). When reacted neatly without bipyridine, InMe 3 and S(SiMe 3 ) 2 form the adduct InMe 3 (S(SiMe 3 ) 2 ), which subsequently eliminates TMS and intermolecularly associates to yield [InMe 2 (SSiMe 3 )] 4 . Although stable in an inert atmosphere, [InMe 2 (SSiMe 3 )] 4 undergoes facile hydrolysis to yield [InMeS] n when exposed to air. The effect of ligand addition (4,4’-bipyridine (4,4’-bpy)) to [InMe 2 (SSiMe 3 )] 4 is then examined. In every case, it is shown that the presence of the bpy ligand has a profound influence on the resulting structure, as shown by the unexpected formation of a trimer and In 10 S 7 cluster network.

Atomically Precise Crystalline Materials Based on Kinetically Inert Metal Ions via Reticular Mechanopolymerization

Abstract Atomistic control of the coordination environment of lattice ions and the distribution of metal sites within crystalline mixed‐metal coordination polymers remain significant synthetic challenges. Herein is reported the mechanochemical synthesis of a reticular family of crystalline heterobimetallic metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) is now achieved by polymerization of molecular Ru 2 [II,III] complexes, featuring unprotected carboxylic acid substituents, with Cu(OAc) 2 . The resulting crystalline heterobimetallic MOFs are solid solutions of Ru 2 and Cu 2 sites housed within [M 3 L 2 ] phases. The developed mechanochemical strategy is modular and allows for systematic control of the primary coordination sphere of the Ru 2 sites within an isoreticular family of materials. This strategy is anticipated to provide a rational approach to atomically precise mixed‐metal materials.

Mechanochemical synthesis and structural analysis of trivalent lanthanide and uranium diphenylphosphinodiboranates

Phosphinodiboranates (H 3 BPR 2 BH 3 – ) are a class of borohydrides that have merited a reputation as weakly coordinating anions, which is attributed in part to the dearth of coordination complexes known with transition metals, lanthanides, and actinides. We recently reported how K(H 3 BP t Bu 2 BH 3 ) exhibits sluggish salt elimination reactivity with f-metal halides in organic solvents such as Et 2 O and THF. Here we report how this reactivity appears to be further attenuated in solution when the t Bu groups attached to phosphorus are exchanged for R = Ph or H, and we describe how mechanochemistry was used to overcome limited solution reactivity with K(H 3 BPPh 2 BH 3 ). Grinding three equivalents of K(H 3 BPPh 2 BH 3 ) with UI 3 (THF) 4 or LnI 3 (Ln = Ce, Pr, Nd) allowed homoleptic complexes with the empirical formulas U(H 3 BPPh 2 BH 3 ) 3 (1), Ce(H 3 BPPh 2 BH 3 ) 3 (2), Pr(H 3 BPPh 2 BH 3 ) 3 (3), and Nd(H 3 BPPh 2 BH 3 ) 3 (4) to be prepared and subsequently crystallized in good yields (50–80%). Single-crystal XRD studies revealed that all four complexes exist as dimers or coordination polymers in the solid-state, whereas 1 H and 11 B NMR spectra showed that they exist as a mixture of monomers and dimers in solution. Treating 4 with THF breaks up the dimer to yield the monomeric complex Nd(H 3 BPPh 2 BH 3 ) 3 (THF) 3 (4-THF). XRD studies revealed that 4-THF has one chelating and two dangling H 3 BPPh 2 BH 3 – ligands bound to the metal to accommodate binding of THF. In contrast to the results with K(H 3 BPPh 2 BH 3 ), attempting the same mechanochemical reactions with Na(H 3 BPH 2 BH 3 ) containing the simplest phosphinodiboranate were unsuccessful; only the partial metathesis product U(H 3 BPH 2 BH 3 )I 2 (THF) 3 (5) was isolated in poor yields. Here, despite these limitations, our results offer new examples showing how mechanochemistry can be used to rapidly synthesize molecular coordination complexes that are otherwise difficult to prepare using more traditional solution methods.
