Maturation and Status of the Lockheed Martin Micro1-2 Cryocooler

This paper describes the maturation and status of the Lockheed Martin “High Power” Micro1-2 pulse tube cryocooler. This cryocooler, which was qualified to technology readiness level 6 in 2014, is the baseline cooler for the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) Mapping Imaging Spectrometer for Europa (MISE) instrument aboard the Europa Clipper mission, and the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (JHU-APL) Gamma Ray and Neutron Spectrometer (GRNS) aboard the planned Psyche asteroid mission. This paper will describe enhancements to the cryocooler made for the MISE program, specifically modifications to maximize the cooler efficiency at low heat rejection temperature (220 K) and to increase the operating frequency. The paper will also describe minor modifications for the GRNS program, specifically modification of the coldfinger for low thermal emissivity and the addition of a cold tip interface tab. Finally, the paper will describe modifications made for operation with 150 K heat rejection temperature and 35 K cold tip temperature for the Deep Space Cooling System (DSCS) project with Iris Technology.

Random vibration, exported vibration, and passive isolation testing of the Ricor K508N cryocooler

The Ricor K508N is a rotary Stirling Cryocooler whose predecessor, the K508, has extensive flight heritage. The K508N has significant potential as a low-cost option for CubeSat infrared electro-optical payload applications. This paper will explore the work done by the ATA project on the exported vibration characterization of a set of standard K508N cryocoolers (35 atm) and the implementation and performance comparison of several passive vibration isolation and damping technologies to help mitigate the jitter effect of COTS cryocoolers. Kistler Force dynamometers and accelerometers were used to measure the K508N’s body and cold tip Multicomponent Exported Forces and Torques (EFT). Wire rope and Pyrolytic Graphite Sheet thermal straps are used as vibration isolation technologies. The K508N also underwent sine sweep resonant and peak profile testing as well as random vibration testing to GEVS launch loads in a NanoRacks soft stow configuration.

Post-Flight Analysis of a 10K Sorption Cryocooler

In May 1996, the Brilliant Eyes Ten-Kelvin Sorption Cryocooler Experiment (BETSCE) was flown aboard the Space Shuttle flight STS-77 in the first space-flight demonstration of chemisorption cryocooler technology. While on orbit, BETSCE successfully met its science objectives of cooling from 70 K to 10 K in less than two minutes, sustaining a 100 mW heat load below 11 K for over then minutes, and demonstrating recycle times of approximately eleven hours.

Effect of Heat Rejection Conditions on Cryocooler Operational Stability

It is well known that cryocooler thermal efficiency is a strong function of heat rejection temperature, roughly following the dependency described by carnot. An equally important and generally overlooked implication of cryocooler heat-rejection thermodynamics is the effect of the heat rejection temparature control mode on cyrocooler performance and operational stability.

Investigation of Gas Effects on Cryocooler Resonance Characteristics

Cryocooler thermal and vibrational performance is determined, fundamentally, by the dynamic interactions between the mechanical system and the working fluid. This paper explores the effect of working-fluid characteristics on the mechanical response of the cooler. Experimental data collected from two coolers characterized under the Jet Propulsion Laboratory's extensive program of cryocooler testing and characterization show that a classical single-degree-of-freedom spring-mass-damper model does not capture the full frequency dependence of the mechanical response. The data from the two modes of cooler operation (slosh and head-to-head) are used to motivate the explanation that working-fluid characteristics dominate at high frequencies, and mechanical system characteristics dominate at lower frequencies. Operating temperature is shown to be a significant factor in determining resonance behavior. Finally, the discussion provides a framework within which resonate parameters and cooler characteristics can be extracted from the experimental data.

An approach to optimization of low-power Stirling cryocoolers

A method for optimizing the design (shape of the displacer) of low power Stirling cryocoolers relative to the power required to operate the systems is described. A variational calculation which includes static conduction, shuttle and radiation losses, as well as regenerator inefficiency, was completed for coolers operating in the 300 K to 10 K range. While the calculations apply to tapered displacer machines, comparison of the results with stepped displacer cryocoolers indicates reasonable agreement.

Experiments with a fully instrumented split Stirling cryocooler

A practical model that can be used to accurately size and optimally split stirling cryocoolers is discussed. A practical model that could be used to extrapolate existing designs to meet different specifications was developed. However, to do this detailed knowledge of the dynamic operating parameters of this type of cryocooler is required. The first stage is to fully instrument a refrigerator so that various dynamic parameters can be measured. The second stage involves the application of these measurements to the design and optimization of a range of coolers.

A nonproprietary, nonsecret program for calculating Stirling cryocoolers

A design program for an integrated Stirling cycle cryocooler was written on an IBM-PC computer. The program is easy to use and shows the trends and itemizes the losses. The calculated results were compared with some measured performance values. The program predicts somewhat optimistic performance and needs to be calibrated more with experimental measurements. Adding a multiplier to the friction factor can bring the calculated rsults in line with the limited test results so far available. The program is offered as a good framework on which to build a truly useful design program for all types of cryocoolers.

Joule-Thomson valves for long term service in space cryocoolers

Joule-Thomson valves for small cryocoolers have throttling passages on the order of 0.1 millimeter in diameter. Consequently, they can become plugged easily and stop the operation of the cooler. Plugging can be caused by solid particles, liquids or gases. Plugging is usually caused by the freezing of contaminant gases from the process stream. In small open loop coolers and in closed loop coolers where periodic maintenance is allowed, the problem is overcome by using careful assembly techniques, pure process gases, warm filters and cold adsorbers. A more thorough approach is required for closed loop cryocoolers which must operate unattended for long periods. This paper presents the results of an effort to solve this problem. The causes of plugging are examined, and various ways to eliminate plugging are discussed. Finally, the development of a J-T defroster is explained. It is concluded that a combination of preventive measures and a defroster will reduce the chance of cooler failure by plugging to such a degree that J-T coolers can be used for long term space missions.

Improving adsorption cryocoolers by multi-stage compression and reducing void volume

It is shown that the performance of gas adsorption cryocoolers is greatly improved by using adsorbents with low void volume within and between individual adsorbent particles (reducing void volumes in plumbing lines), and by compressing the working fluid in more than one stage. Refrigerator specific power requirements and compressor volumetric efficiencies are obtained in terms of adsorbent and plumbing line void volumes and operating pressures for various charcoal adsorbents using an analytical model. Performance optimization curves for 117.5 and 80 K charcoal/nitrogen adsorption cryocoolers are given for both single stage and multistage compressor systems, and compressing the nitrogen in two stages is shown to lower the specific power requirements by 18 percent for the 117.5 K system.
