Utah FORGE: Direct Shear Test Data for Investigating Seismic Precursors to Shear Failure of Fractures

This dataset includes results of direct shear tests to investigate the mechanical and geophysical response of dry and saturated fractures in Indiana limestone and Sierra White granite. Direct shear tests were performed on tensile-induced fractures in Indiana limestone and Sierra White granite in a custom water-pressurized chamber. The provided Excel files include the representative seismic wave signals and the normalized wave amplitudes of ultrasonic wave transducers. A link to the published journal article presenting the data and describing the experiment in detail is provided as well.

An astrophysics data program investigation of cluster evolution

A preliminary status report is given on studies using the Einstein x ray observations of distant clusters of galaxies that are also candidates for gravitational lenses. The studies will determine the location and surface brightness distribution of the x ray emission from clusters associated with selected gravitational lenses. The x ray emission comes from hot gas that traces out the total gravitational potential in the cluster, so its distribution is approximately the same as the mass distribution causing gravitational lensing. Core radii and x ray virial masses can be computed for several of the brighter Einstein sources, and preliminary results are presented on A2218. Preliminary status is also reported on a study of the optical data from 0024+16. A provisional value of 1800 to 2200 km/s for the equivalent velocity dispersion is obtained. The ultimate objective is to extract the mass of the gravitational lens, and perhaps more detailed information on the distribution of matter as warranted. A survey of the Einstein archive shows that the clusters A520, A1704, 3C295, A2397, A1722, SC5029-247, A3186 and A370 have enough x ray counts observed to warrant more detailed optical observations of arcs for comparison. Mass estimates for these clusters can therefore be obtained from three independent sources: the length scale (core radius) that characterizes the density dropoff of the x ray emitting hot gas away from its center, the velocity dispersion of the galaxies moving in the cluster potential, and gravitational bending of light by the total cluster mass. This study will allow the comparison of these three techniques and ultimately improve the knowledge of cluster masses.

ERTS-1 data user investigation of wetlands ecology

The author has identified the following significant results. ERTS-1 imagery (enlarged to 1:250,000) is an excellent tool by which large area coastal marshland mapping may be undertaken. If states can sacrifice some accuracy (amount unknown at this time) in placing of boundary lines, the technique may be used to do the following: (1) estimate extent of man's impact on marshes by ditching and lagooning and accelerated successional trends; (2) place boundaries between wetland and upland and hence estimate amount of coastal marshland remaining in the state; (3) distinguish among relatively large zones of various plant species including high and low growth S. alterniflora, J. roemerianus, and S. cynosuroides; and (4) estimate marsh plant species productivity when ground based information is available.

ERTS data user investigation to develop a multistage forest sampling inventory system

The author has identified the following significant results. A system to provide precision annotation of predetermined forest inventory sampling units on the ERTS-1 MSS images was developed. In addition, an annotation system for high altitude U2 photographs was completed. MSS bulk image accuracy is good enough to allow the use of one square mile sampling units. IMANCO image analyzer interpretation work for small scale images demonstrated the need for much additional analyses. Continuing image interpretation work for the next reporting period is concentrated on manual image interpretation work as well as digital interpretation system development using the computer compatible tapes.

Investigation using data from ERTS to develop and implement utilization of living marine resources

The author has identified the following significant results. A feasibility study to demonstrate the potential of satellites for providing fisheries significant information was conducted in the Mississippi Sound and adjacent offshore waters. Attempts were made to relate satellite acquired imagery to selected oceanographic parameters and then to relate these parameters to aircraft remotely sensed distribution patterns of resident surface schooling fishes. Initial results suggest that this approach is valid and that the satellite acquired imagery may have important fisheries resource assessment implications.

Investigation using data from ERTS to develop and implement utilization of living marine resources

The author has identified the following significant results. The feasibility of utilizing ERTS-1 data in conjunction with aerial remote sensing and sea truth information to predict the distribution of menhaden in the Mississippi Sound during a specific time frame has been demonstrated by employing a number of uniquely designed empirical regression models. The construction of these models was made possible through innovative statistical routines specifically developed to meet the stated objectives.
