BNF Radar b1 Data Processing Report: Spring 2025

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) User Facility supports atmospheric science through an integrated network of fixed and mobile observatories. These facilities collect continuous and campaign-based observations of atmospheric properties, with the goal of improving the representation of clouds, aerosols, precipitation, and radiation in Earth system models. The Bankhead National Forest (BNF) site, established as an ARM Mobile Facility (AMF) on 1 October 2024, is situated in a forested region of northern Alabama. Its strategic location in a southeastern U.S. environment characterized by complex terrain, diverse land cover, and frequent convective storms provides a valuable opportunity to examine coupled land-atmosphere processes under natural variability.

Eddy Covariance Flux / Processed Data

This dataset consists of estimates of mean and turbulent quantities from a vertical array of instruments installed on the barge met mast, including: sonic anemometers, relative humidity and temperature, pressure, and rain. One of the levels consists of a paired sonic anemometer and infrared gas analyzer for direct covariance sensible and latent heat fluxes. Mean and turbulent quantities are determined over 20-minute averaging periods.

Avian Radar / Processed Data

This dataset contains radar track data of avian targets from DeTect's 7360 s-band radar during the large barge deployment from June 2024 though September 2024.

17 WIND ENERGY

Ceilometer / Processed Data

This dataset consists of BARG Site netCDF L1 data files containing level 1 (L1) data from the ceilometer.

17 WIND ENERGY

Micro Rain Radar / Processed Data

This dataset includes the reflectivity, estimated rainfall rate, liquid water content, and vertical velocity recorded by the MRR2 averaged over 30-second intervals.

Present Weather Detector / Processed Data

The present weather detector data provide NWS weather type and codes and visibility metrics. These data would be helpful to easily detect fog over the barge.

RHOD Site - Surface Meteorological Station / Processed Data

This dataset contains raw data from the WFIP3 RHOD site supplementary meteorological sensors: T/RH and barometer; 1-sec average. The supplementary meteorological suite was added to PNNL Surface Flux Station to provide independent measurements of air temperature, relative humidity, and atmospheric pressure.
