High-efficiency solar cells fabricated from direct-current magnetron sputtered n-indium tin oxide onto p-InP grown by atmospheric pressure metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy

An attempt is made to improve device efficiencies by depositing indium tin oxide onto epitaxially grown p-InP on p(+)-InP substrates. This leads to a reduction in the device series resistance, high-quality reproducible surfaces, and an improvement in the transport properties of the base layer. Moreover, many of the facets associated with badly characterized bulk liquid encapsulated Czochralski substrates used in previous investigations are removed in this way.

A linearly controlled direct-current power source for high-current inductive loads in a magnetic suspension wind tunnel

The NASA Langley 6 inch magnetic suspension and balance system (MSBS) requires an independently controlled bidirectional DC power source for each of six positioning electromagnets. These electromagnets provide five-degree-of-freedom control over a suspended aerodynamic test model. Existing power equipment, which employs resistance coupled thyratron controlled rectifiers as well as AC to DC motor generator converters, is obsolete, inefficient, and unreliable. A replacement six phase bidirectional controlled bridge rectifier is proposed, which employs power MOSFET switches sequenced by hybrid analog/digital circuits. Full load efficiency is 80 percent compared to 25 percent for the resistance coupled thyratron system. Current feedback provides high control linearity, adjustable current limiting, and current overload protection. A quenching circuit suppresses inductive voltage impulses. It is shown that 20 kHz interference from positioning magnet power into MSBS electromagnetic model position sensors results predominantly from capacitively coupled electric fields. Hence, proper shielding and grounding techniques are necessary. Inductively coupled magnetic interference is negligible.

Measurement of direct current electric fields and plasma flow speeds in Jupiter's magnetosphere

During the encounter of Ulysses with Jupiter, we have measured two components of the dc electric field and deduced from them the flow speed in the Io toms, as well as the presence of a polar cap region end what we interpret as a cleft region. Within the toms the flow speed is approximately equal to the speed of a plasma corotating with Jupiter but has significant deviations. The dominant deviations have an apparent period of the order of Jupiter's rotation period, but this might be a latitudinal effect. Other important periods are about 40 min and less than 25 min.

Design and Development of High Voltage Direct Current (DC) Sources for the Solar Array Module Plasma Interaction Experiment

Two programmable, high voltage DC power supplies were developed as part of the flight electronics for the Solar Array Module Plasma Interaction Experiment (SAMPIE). SAMPIE's primary objectives were to study and characterize the high voltage arcing and parasitic current losses of various solar cells and metal samples within the space plasma of low earth orbit (LEO). High voltage arcing can cause large discontinuous changes in spacecraft potential which lead to damage of the power system materials and significant Electromagnetic Interference (EMI). Parasitic currents cause a change in floating potential which lead to reduced power efficiency. These primary SAMPIE objectives were accomplished by applying artificial biases across test samples over a voltage range from -600 VDC to +300 VDC. This paper chronicles the design, final development, and test of the two programmable high voltage sources for SAMPIE. The technical challenges to the design for these power supplies included vacuum, space plasma effects, thermal protection, Shuttle vibrations and accelerations.

A Theoretical Treatment of the Steady-Flow, Linear, Crossed-Field, Direct-Current Plasma Accelerator for Inviscid, Adiabatic, Isothermal, Constant-Area Flow

The theory is developed from the individual equations of motion of the three components of the plasma. The effect of the ion cyclotron angle (omega tau), which is the product of the ion cyclotron frequency and the ion mean free time between collisions with neutral particles and which is proportional to the axial component of the ion slip velocity, on both Joule heating rate and accelerator length is included in the results and is shown to be small only for values of about 10(exp -3) radian or less.

Fourier Transform Ultraviolet Spectroscopy of the A Pi-2(3/2) Direct Current X Pi-2(3/2) Transition of BrO

The first spectra of the A (2)Pi(sub 3/2) from X (2)Pi(sub 3/2) electronic transition of BrO using Fourier transform ultraviolet spectroscopy are obtained. Broadband vibrational spectra acquired at 298 +/- 2 K and 228 +/- 5 K, as well as high-resolution rotational spectra of the A from X 7,0 and 12,0 vibrational bands are presented. Wavenumber positions for the spectra are obtained with high accuracy, and cross section assignments are made, incorporating the existing literature. With 35 cm(exp -1) (0.40 nm) resolution the absolute cross section at the peak of the 7,0 band is determined to be (1.58 +/- 0.12) x 10(exp -17) sq cm/molecule at 298 +/- 2 K and (1.97 +/- 0.15) x 10(exp -17) sq cm/molecule at 228 +/- 5 K. BrO dissociation energies are determined with a graphical Birge-Sponer technique, using Le Roy-Bernstein theory to place an upper limit on the extrapolation. From the ground-state dissociation energy, D(sub o)" = 231.0 +/- 1.7 kJ/mol, the heat of formation of BrO(g) is calculated, del(sub f)H(0 K) = 133.7 +/- 1.7 kJ/mol and del(sub f)H(298.15 K) = 126.2 +/- 1.7 kJ/mol. Cross sections for the high-resolution 7,0 and 12,0 rotational peaks are the first to be reported. The band structures are modeled, and improved band origins, rotational constants, centrifugal distortion constants, and linewidths are determined. In particular, J-dependent linewidths and lifetimes are observed for the both the 7,0 and 12,0 bands.

Advanced Health Management of a Brushless Direct Current Motor/Controller

This effort demonstrates that health management can be taken to the component level for electromechanical systems. The same techniques can be applied to take any health management system to the component level, based on the practicality of the implementation for that particular system. This effort allows various logic schemes to be implemented for the identification and management of failures. By taking health management to the component level, integrated vehicle health management systems can be enhanced by protecting box-level avionics from being shut down in order to isolate a failed computer.

Directional solidification of a planar interface in the presence of a time-dependent electric current

Directional solidification of pure materials and binary alloys with a planar crystal-metal interface in the presence of a time-dependent electric current is considered. For a variety of time-dependent currents, the temperature fields and the interface velocity as functions of time are presented for indium antimonide and bismuth and for the binary alloys germanium-gallium and tin-bismuth. For the alloys, the solid composition is calculated as a function of position. Quantitative predictions are made of the effect of an electrical pulse on the solute distribution in the solidified material.

Soft-Fault Detection Technologies Developed for Electrical Power Systems

The NASA Glenn Research Center, partner universities, and defense contractors are working to develop intelligent power management and distribution (PMAD) technologies for future spacecraft and launch vehicles. The goals are to provide higher performance (efficiency, transient response, and stability), higher fault tolerance, and higher reliability through the application of digital control and communication technologies. It is also expected that these technologies will eventually reduce the design, development, manufacturing, and integration costs for large, electrical power systems for space vehicles. The main focus of this research has been to incorporate digital control, communications, and intelligent algorithms into power electronic devices such as direct-current to direct-current (dc-dc) converters and protective switchgear. These technologies, in turn, will enable revolutionary changes in the way electrical power systems are designed, developed, configured, and integrated in aerospace vehicles and satellites. Initial successes in integrating modern, digital controllers have proven that transient response performance can be improved using advanced nonlinear control algorithms. One technology being developed includes the detection of "soft faults," those not typically covered by current systems in use today. Soft faults include arcing faults, corona discharge faults, and undetected leakage currents. Using digital control and advanced signal analysis algorithms, we have shown that it is possible to reliably detect arcing faults in high-voltage dc power distribution systems (see the preceding photograph). Another research effort has shown that low-level leakage faults and cable degradation can be detected by analyzing power system parameters over time. This additional fault detection capability will result in higher reliability for long-lived power systems such as reusable launch vehicles and space exploration missions.
