Particle and fluid simulations of resistive current-driven electrostatic ion cyclotron waves

The results from 1-D numerical simulations of electrostatic ion cyclotron waves (EIC) are presented for a model in which the electrons are a resistive (collisional) fluid. Simulations of both the kinetic and fluid descriptions are performed and compared in order to assess the fundamental limitations of fluid theory for EIC waves. The effect of ion-neutral collisions is also included using a simple Monte Carlo technique. It is found that a small ion-neutral collision frequency destroys the frequency harmonic coupling of kinetic EIC waves and tends to validate the fluid description. The saturation amplitude of the current-driven EIC instability is in agreement with recent laboratory experiments. The coherent nature (extremely narrow spectral width) and phase velocity agree with ground based (coherent backscatter radars) and in situ observations of current-driven EIC waves in the high latitude ionosphere.

Contact regrowth technique for low-resistance nonalloyed contacts to the hot-electron transistor

A novel contact regrowth technique for the formation of extremely low nonalloyed ohmic contacts is reported. The successful demonstration of this technique is reported on an InGaAs/InAlAs hot-electron transistor device. For the investigated InGaAs-based structure, the regrown contacting scheme reported includes an In(0.53)Ga(0.47)As layer, an InAs/GaAs strained-layer superlattice, and an InAs cap, all heavily doped n type with Si. A very low specific contact resistance of 1.8 x 10 to the -7th ohm sq cm to the base layer is obtained. The higher current densities achieved in the transistor characteristics are in close agreement with calculations, and a contact model is presented explaining the poor results of conventional nonalloyed contacts.

'Self-consistent' production of ion conics on return current region auroral field lines - A time-dependent, semi-kinetic model

We describe initial results from a time-dependent, semi-kinetic model of plasma outflow incorporating wave-particle interactions along current-carrying auroral field lines. Electrostatic waves are generated by the current driven ion cyclotron instability (CDICI), causing perpendicular velocity diffusion of ions plus electron heating via anomalous resistivity when and where the relative drift between electrons and ions exceeds certain critical velocities. Using the local bulk parameters we calculate these critical velocities, and so are able to self-consistently switch on and off the heating of the various particle species. Due to the dependence of these critical velocities on the bulk parameters of the species the heating effects exhibit quite complex spatial and temporal variations. A wide range of ion distribution functions are observed in these simulations, including conics with energies of a few electron volts and 'ring' distributions. The rings are seen to be a natural result of transverse heating and velocity filter effects and do not require coherent acceleration processes. We also observe the formation of a density depletion in hydrogen and enhanced oxygen densities at high altitudes.

Bending fatigue of electron-beam-welded foils. Application to a hydrodynamic air bearing in the Chrysler/DOE upgraded automotive gas tubine engine

A hydrodynamic air bearing with a compliment surface is used in the gas generator of an upgraded automotive gas turbine engine. In the prototype design, the compliant surface is a thin foil spot welded at one end to the bearing cartridge. During operation, the foil failed along the line of spot welds which acted as a series of stress concentrators. Because of its higher degree of geometric uniformity, electron beam welding of the foil was selected as an alternative to spot welding. Room temperature bending fatigue tests were conducted to determine the fatigue resistance of the electron beam welded foils. Equations were determined relating cycles to crack initiation and cycles to failure to nominal total strain range. A scaling procedure is presented for estimating the reduction in cyclic life when the foil is at its normal operating temperature of 260 C (500 F).

A simulation study of the critical ionization velocity process

The critical ionization velocity process is studied by first investigating a coupled system of equations describing the production of several ion species and electrons by impact ionization, their collisions with neutrals, and the heating of electrons. Analytic relations derived from this were tested with the help of a particle simulation, including collisional processes between neutrals and plasma particles. It was found that resistive heating of electrons plays an important role when the density of the neutrals is high, and that electron heating due to lower hybrid waves is significant when the neutral density is low. In both cases, the control of the plasma production rate by the ratio of the beam velocity to the critical velocity was verified.

Simulated space environment effects on the optical properties of poly(arylene ethers)

Results are reported from a study of the stability of poly(arylene ethers) formed in a reaction of 1,3 -bis(4-chlorobenzoyl)benzene and various bisphenols after experiencing long-term exposure to space conditions. Transparent poly(arylene ethers) films were subjected to separate electron and UV bombardments, as were polysulfone and Kapton films for comparisons. The order of exposure to the two types of radiation was reversed for two sample populations. The optical properties and glass transition temperatures of the samples were determined after irradiation. The poly(arylene ethers) films exhibited good resistance to the electron radiation but suffered severe degradation in the UV environment. The loss of optical transmissivity was proportional to the UV radiation dose.

Lithium-Counterdoped Solar Cells

Resistance to damage by energetic electrons increased. Lithiumcounterdoped cells produce more output power than presently-used, conventional n + p silicon cells, after irradiation by MeV electrons. In addition to possessing increased radiation resistance, lithium-counterdoped silicon solar cells show significant performance restoration when annealed at temperature of 100 degrees C. Performances compared after irradiation with 1-MeV electrons. Lithium-counterdoped solar cell offers potential for in situ annealing in space. Process increases electrical power available from solar-cell array during use in space missions subject to degrading particulate environment of space.

Synthesis and Characterization of Chalcopyrite (CuInS2 and CuhInSe2) Colloidal Nanoparticles for Optoelectronic Applications via Low-Temperature Pyrolysis of Single-Source Precursors

Nanocrystalline (or quantum dot) materials hold potential as components of next-generation photovoltaic (PV) devices. The inclusion of quantum dots in PV devices has been proposed as a means to improve the efficiency of photon conversion (quantum dot solar cell), enable low-cost deposition of thin-films, provide sites for exciton dissociation, and pathways for electron transport. Quantum dots are also expected to be more resistant to degradation from electron, proton, and alpha particle radiation than the corresponding bulk material, a requirement for use in space solar ~sells. Chalcopyrite nanocrystals can be produced by low-temperature thermal decomposition of single-source precursors such as (PR3)2CuIn(ER')4 (R = Ph, R' = Et, E = S; R = R' = Ph, E = Se). Single-source precursors are molecules which contain all the necessary elements for synthesis of a desired material. Thermal decomposition of the precursor results in the formation of material with the correct stoichiometry as a nanocrystalline powder or a thin film, often at significantly lower temperatures than those typically employed for thin-film deposition by multi-source evaporation techniques, typically less than 500 C. We show that CuInSz and CuInSe2 nanocrystals can be synthesized from the precursors at temperatures as low as 250 C. The nanocrystals are characterized by optical spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and electron microscopy.

Effect of thermal exposure, forming, and welding on high-temperature, dispersion-strengthened aluminum alloy: Al-8Fe-1V-2Si

The feasibility of applying conventional hot forming and welding methods to high temperature aluminum alloy, Al-8Fe-1V-2Si (FVS812), for structural applications and the effect of thermal exposure on mechanical properties were determined. FVS812 (AA8009) sheet exhibited good hot forming and resistance welding characteristics. It was brake formed to 90 deg bends (0.5T bend radius) at temperatures greater than or equal to 390 C (730 F), indicating the feasibility of fabricating basic shapes, such as angles and zees. Hot forming of simple contoured-flanged parts was demonstrated. Resistance spot welds with good static and fatigue strength at room and elevated temperatures were readily produced. Extended vacuum degassing during billet fabrication reduced porosity in fusion and resistance welds. However, electron beam welding was not possible because of extreme degassing during welding, and gas-tungsten-arc welds were not acceptable because of severely degraded mechanical properties. The FVS812 alloy exhibited excellent high temperature strength stability after thermal exposures up to 315 C (600 F) for 1000 h. Extended billet degassing appeared to generally improve tensile ductility, fatigue strength, and notch toughness. But the effects of billet degassing and thermal exposure on properties need to be further clarified. The manufacture of zee-stiffened, riveted, and resistance-spot-welded compression panels was demonstrated.

Samples were prepared by melting the metals, followed by annealing to various temperatures. The result was a structurally weak material. Sputtered films on sapphire substrates were prepared and studied. The substrates give the films mechanical strength and permit easy attachment of electrical leads. Materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, electrical resistance vs. temperature, and critical current measurements. Some of the results on CuMo6S8 are presented.

Surface acoustic wave/silicon monolithic sensor/processor

A new technique for sputter deposition of piezoelectric zinc oxide (ZnO) is described. An argon-ion milling system was converted to sputter zinc oxide films in an oxygen atmosphere using a pure zinc oxide target. Piezoelectric films were grown on silicon dioxide and silicon dioxide overlayed with gold. The sputtered films were evaluated using surface acoustic wave measurements, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, Auger electron spectroscopy, and resistivity measurements. The effect of the sputtering conditions on the film quality and the result of post-deposition annealing are discussed. The application of these films to the generation of surface acoustic waves is also discussed.
