High-energy $η^{(')}π$ photoproduction and the nature of exotic waves

The observation of hybrid mesons in photoproduction experiments can provide essential insight into the inner workings of quantum chromodynamics in the strong coupling regime. In particular, the study of final $η^{(')}π$ states is of great interest due to the presence of the lowest lying hybrid candidate with manifestly exotic quantum numbers, the $π_1$(1600). In this work, a double-vector exchange model with Reggeized $ρ$ and $ω$ trajectories is developed to describe the photoproduction of $η^{(')}π$ in the high-mass region. Results are presented for the differential cross sections and forward-backward asymmetries in the energy region of interest to the GlueX experiment. The model contains no free parameters, and reproduces the magnitude and t-dependence of existing CLAS data at $E_γ$ = 5 GeV. The model predicts a stronger asymmetry in the $η'π$ channel than in the $ηπ$ channel, consistent with what has previously been observed in pion beam experiments. This suggests that the sizeable production of exotic odd waves in $η'π$ is not necessarily related to the presence of gluon-rich environments. Confirmation of these predicted asymmetries from forthcoming GlueX data would enable further predictions of the low-energy spectrum.

Production of meson molecules in ultraperipheral heavy ion collisons

In this work we present a calculation of exotic charmonium production in ultraperipheral collisions, in which the exotic state is explicitly treated as a meson molecule. Our formalism is general, but we focus on the lightest possible exotic charmonium state: a 𝐷 + ⁢𝐷 − molecular bound state. It was proposed some time ago, and it has been an object of experimental searches. Here we study the production of the open charm pair in the process 𝛾⁢𝛾 → 𝐷 + ⁢𝐷 − . Then we use a prescription to project the free pair |𝐷 + ⁢𝐷 − ⟩ onto a bound state at the amplitude level and compute the cross section of the process 𝛾⁢𝛾 → 𝐵 (where 𝐵 is the bound state). Finally, we convolute this last cross section with the equivalent photon distributions coming from the projectile and target in an ultraperipheral collision and find the 𝐴⁢𝐴 → 𝐴⁢𝐴⁢𝐵 cross section, which, for 𝑃⁢𝑏 −𝑃⁢𝑏 collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ =5.02 TeV, is of the order of 3 μ⁢b.

Search for Exotic Hadrons in eta (') pi at GlueX

The theoretical description of the strong interaction between quarks and gluons that form hadrons is provided by Quantum Chromodynamics. However, the impact of gluonic excitations on the characteristics of hadrons and their role in hadronic structure is yet to be determined. Recent discoveries of several possibly exotic hadrons highlight the significance of spectroscopic measurements in comprehending the nature of the strong interaction. These proceedings focus on the status of the hunt for exotic contributions in photoproduction data obtained with the GlueX experiment at Jefferson Lab in ?(?)? systems. Specifically, we discuss the investigation of the a2(1320) meson production in these key channels, which is an initial step towards identifying exotic quantum number hybrid mesons. Furthermore, the discussion will cover the application of an amplitude analysis that exploits the polarization of the photon beam available to the GlueX experiment and its implications for identifying the lightest hybrid meson.

Universal mass equation for equal-quantum excited-states sets I

The masses of fifteen baryon sets and twenty-four meson sets of three or more equal-quantum excited states, using Breit-Wigner PDG masses and their uncertainties at fixed J P for baryons and J PC for mesons, are fitted by a simple two-parameter logarithmic function, M n = αLn(n)+β, where n is the level of radial excitation. The conjecture is made that accurately measured masses of all equal-quantum baryons (including LHCb exotic P$_{c\bar{c}}^+$s) and meson excited states (including s$\bar{s}$, s$\bar{c}$, c$\bar{c}$, c$\bar{b}$, and b$\bar{b}$ states) are related by the logarithmic function used here; at least for the mass range of currently known excited states. The baryon “star” rating case is evaluated. The Cornell potential is an example of how a logarithmic behavior can be explained by an appropriate potential. Thus, a “universal mass equation” (UME) for equal-quantum excited-state sets is presented.

Strange Mesons and Gluonic Excitations

In the standard model of particle physics, the interactions between the fundamental constituents of nuclear matter, quarks and gluons, are governed by the theory of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). A central goal of nuclear physics is to understand how hadrons, such as protons and neutrons, are formed from these underlying quark and gluon degrees of freedom. A hadron is primarily constructed from three quarks or a quark-antiquark pair; however, the theory of QCD allows for much more exotic configurations. One of the predicted exotic configurations is known as a hybrid meson, which contains an excited gluonic field in addition to the usual quark-antiquark pair. This project aims to search for and study these gluonic excitations using the Gluonic Excitation (GlueX) experiment at Jefferson Lab in Newport News, VA. The discovery potential of the experiment will be significantly extended by studying the quark flavor composition of the meson spectrum through the completion and use of an enhanced detector to identify mesons containing strange quarks. The unprecedented statistical precision of the data collected at GlueX will allow us to search for a pattern of light-quark hybrid mesons, providing new insight into the interactions that bind the fundamental quarks and gluons into the hadrons we observe in nature.

Observation of an exotic narrow doubly charmed tetraquark

Conventional, hadronic matter consists of baryons and mesons made of three quarks and a quark–antiquark pair, respectively. Here, we report the observation of a hadronic state containing four quarks in the Large Hadron Collider beauty experiment. This so-called tetraquark contains two charm quarks, a \(\overline{{{{{u}}}}}\) and a \(\overline{{{{{d}}}}}\) quark. This exotic state has a mass of approximately 3,875 MeV and manifests as a narrow peak in the mass spectrum of D 0 D 0 π + mesons just below the D *+ D 0 mass threshold. The near-threshold mass together with the narrow width reveals the resonance nature of the state.

Elliptic anisotropy measurement of the f 0 (980) hadron in proton-lead collisions and evidence for its quark-antiquark composition

Despite the f 0 (980) hadron having been discovered half a century ago, the question about its quark content has not been settled: it might be an ordinary quark-antiquark ($q\bar{q}$) meson, a tetraquark ($q\bar{q}$$q\bar{q}$) exotic state, a kaon-antikaon ($K\bar{K}$) molecule, or a quark-antiquark-gluon ($q\bar{q}$g) hybrid. This paper reports strong evidence that the f 0 (980) state is an ordinary $q\bar{q}$ meson, inferred from the scaling of elliptic anisotropies (v 2 ) with the number of constituent quarks (n q ), as empirically established using conventional hadrons in relativistic heavy ion collisions. The f 0 (980) state is reconstructed via its dominant decay channel f 0 (980) → π + π − , in proton-lead collisions recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC, and its v 2 is measured as a function of transverse momentum (p T ). It is found that the n q = 2 ($q\bar{q}$ state) hypothesis is favored over n q = 4 ($q\bar{q}$$q\bar{q}$ or $K\bar{K}$ states) by 7.7, 6.3, or 3.1 standard deviations in the p T < 10, 8, or 6 GeV/c ranges, respectively, and over n q = 3 ($q\bar{q}$g hybrid state) by 3.5 standard deviations in the p T < 8 GeV/c range. This result represents the first determination of the quark content of the f 0 (980) state, made possible by using a novel approach, and paves the way for similar studies of other exotic hadron candidates.

Constituent model of light hybrid meson decays

A model of light hybrid mesons and their strong decays is developed. The model employs a gluonic quasiparticle to describe low energy gluodynamics and uses the QCD Hamiltonian in Coulomb gauge to guide the construction of states and decay amplitudes. We compute the partial widths of the twelve low lying isovector and vector hybrids. Implications of these results on hybrid searches are also made, with the chief conclusions being that direct observation of the vector states will be difficult, that a hybrid π ( 1800 ) has distinctive decay characteristics, a narrow η ( 1900 ) hybrid should exist, an η 1 ( 1750 ) should be sought, and that the exotic nature of J P C = 2 − + hybrid mesons should be discernible with sufficient data. We argue that the isovector π 2 hybrid has been discovered, giving a total of four possible hybrid mesons, π 1 ( 1600 ) , η 1 ( 1855 ) , π ( 1800 ) , and π 2 ( 2360 ) , which appear to be filling out the low lying hybrid supermultiplet in the expected fashion. Limits on an exotic Higgs decay from a recast ATLAS four-lepton analysis

The ATLAS collaboration, using 139 fb −1 of 13 TeV collisions from the Large Hadron Collider, has placed limits on the decay of a Z boson to three dark photons. We reproduce the results of the ATLAS analysis, and then recast it as a limit on a exotic Higgs decay mode, in which the Higgs boson decays via a pair of intermediate (pseudo)scalars a to four dark photons V (or some other spin-one meson). Across the mass range for m a and m V , we find limits on the exotic Higgs branching fraction BR(H → aa → V V V V ) in the range of 4 × 10 −5 to 1 × 10 −4 .

An Updated Simulation of the Booster Neutrino Beam

For accelerator neutrino experiments, an accurate prediction of the incoming neutrino flux is crucial for reducing uncertainties for all physics measurements. In this exciting period for the Short-Baseline Neutrino program at Fermilab, with far detector (ICARUS) already operating and the near detector (SBND) nearing operation, an updated flux model for the Booster Neutrino Beam (BNB) is presented. The BNB delivers 8 GeV protons to a beryllium target, subsequently producing neutrinos from the decay of the secondary beam of hadrons. A updated Monte-Carlo simulation of beam production in GEANT4 has been created, allowing predictions to be made for detectors with different baselines, offsets and sizes. This new simulation contains new features, such as a full neutrino ancestry to handle hadron production systematics with more precision, with a view to storing all resulting particles - including neutral mesons - from the proton-Beryllium scatter to allow the study of exotic BSM scenarios. Results are presented, with comparisons to the original flux simulated for the MiniBooNE experiment.

Towards An Updated Simulation of the Booster Neutrino Beam

Precise, accurate neutrino flux predictions for neutrino beam experiments are crucial for physics results. Flux predictions for the Booster Neutrino Beam at Fermilab were first published in 2009 by the MiniBooNE collaboration. It is no longer possible to run the simulation used to create these predictions due to outdated software versions. In this exciting period for the Short-Baseline Neutrino Program at Fermilab, with both the far detector (ICARUS) and the near detector (SBND) operating, an updated flux model for the BNB is necessary. For the purpose of using a dynamic, up-to-date beam model, the SBN program has created a new simulation named G4BNB. This framework contains new features, such as a full neutrino ancestry to handle hadron production systematics with more precision, and the inclusion of neutral mesons from the proton-beryllium scatter to allow the study of exotic BSM scenarios.

Why quarkonium hybrid coupling to two $S$-wave heavy-light mesons is not suppressed

We examine the couplings of quarkonium hybrids to heavy-light meson pairs in the Born-Oppenheimer approximation for QCD. The lowest hybrid multiplets consist of bound states of the Π u and Σ$^{-}_{u}$ potentials. We find that the Σ$^{-}_{u}$ potential can couple to pairs of S-wave mesons through string breaking, while the Π u potential cannot. From this observation, we derive model-independent selection rules that contradict previous expectations that quarkonium hybrids are forbidden to decay into pairs of S-wave mesons. These Born-Oppenheimer selection rules are consistent with the partial decay widths of the lowest charmonium hybrid with exotic quantum numbers J PC = 1 -+ recently calculated using lattice QCD.

DK/Dπ scattering and an exotic virtual bound state at the SU(3) flavour symmetric point from lattice QCD

Abstract ElasticS-wave scattering of a charm meson with a light pseudoscalar meson inJ P = 0 + is investigated in the flavour$$ \overline{\textbf{3}} $$ 3 ¯ ,6and$$ \overline{\textbf{15}} $$ 15 ¯ sectors at the SU(3) f flavour point using lattice QCD, working on three volumes withm π ≈ 700 MeV. Large bases of interpolating operators are employed to extract finite-volume spectra, which are subsequently used with the Lüscher method to provide constraints on infinite-volume scattering amplitudes. Examining the singularities of the amplitudes, theS-wave amplitude in the flavour$$ \overline{\textbf{3}} $$ 3 ¯ sector is found to contain a deeply bound state, strongly coupled to elastic threshold, corresponding to the$$ {J}^P={0}^{+}\ {D}_{s0}^{\ast }(2317) $$ J P = 0 + D s 0 ∗ 2317 . In the exotic flavour6sector a virtual bound state is found at$$ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{pole}}} $$ s pole = 2510 – 2610 MeV, roughly 40 – 140 MeV below threshold, whereas the$$ \overline{\textbf{15}} $$ 15 ¯ channel shows weak repulsion.

J/ψ photoproduction at the threshold with GlueX

High-statistics total cross sections for the vector meson photoproduction at the threshold: γp → ωp (from A2 at MAMI, ELPH, and CBELSA), γp → ϕp (from CLAS6 at JLab and LEPS at SPring-8), and γp → J/ψp (from GlueX at JLab) allow one to extract the absolute value of vector meson nucleon scattering length using Vector Meson Dominance (VMD) model. The “young” vector meson hypothesis may explain the fact that the obtained scattering length values for the nucleon. ϕ-meson compared to the typical hadron size of approximately ∼ 1 fm indicates that the proton is more transparent for the ϕ-meson compared to the ω-meson and is much less transparent than the J/ψ-meson. The extended analysis of Υ-meson photoproduction using quasi-data from the QCD approach is in perfect agreement with the light-meson findings using experimental data. Finally, the ability of J-PARC to measure $π^{–}p → ϕn$ and $π^{–}p → J/ψn$ at the threshold, which are free from the VMD model, is presented. It enables one to understand the dynamics of $s\bar{s}$ and $c\bar{c}$ production at threshold and to search for the effects of LHCb’s heavy quark exotic states.

Determination of the spin and parity of all-charm tetraquarks

The traditional quark model accounts for the existence of baryons, such as protons and neutrons, which consist of three quarks, as well as mesons, composed of a quark–antiquark pair. Only recently has substantial evidence started to accumulate for exotic states composed of four or five quarks and antiquarks. The exact nature of their internal structure remains uncertain. Here we report the first measurement of quantum numbers of the recently discovered family of three all-charm tetraquarks, using data collected by the CMS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider from 2016 to 2018 . The angular analysis techniques developed for the discovery and characterization of the Higgs boson have been applied to the new exotic states. Here we show that the quantum numbers for parity P and charge conjugation C symmetries are found to be +1. The spin J of these exotic states is determined to be consistent with 2ħ, while 0ħ and 1ħ are excluded at 95% and 99% confidence levels, respectively. The J PC = 2 ++ assignment implies particular configurations of constituent spins and orbital angular momenta, which constrain the possible internal structure of these tetraquarks.

Study of the doubly charmed tetraquark $\mathrm{T}$ $^+_{cc}$

Quantum chromodynamics, the theory of the strong force, describes interactions of coloured quarks and gluons and the formation of hadronic matter. Conventional hadronic matter consists of baryons and mesons made of three quarks and quark-antiquark pairs, respectively. Particles with an alternative quark content are known as exotic states. Here a study is reported of an exotic narrow state in the D 0 D 0 π + mass spectrum just below the D *+ D 0 mass threshold produced in proton-proton collisions collected with the LHCb detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The state is consistent with the ground isoscalar T$^{+}_{cc}$ tetraquark with a quark content of cc$\bar{u}\bar{d}$ and spin-parity quantum numbers J P = 1 + . Study of the DD mass spectra disfavours interpretation of the resonance as the isovector state. The decay structure via intermediate off-shell D *+ mesons is consistent with the observed D 0 π+ mass distribution. To analyse the mass of the resonance and its coupling to the D*D system, a dedicated model is developed under the assumption of an isoscalar axial-vector T$^{+}_{cc}$ state decaying to the D*D channel. Using this model, resonance parameters including the pole position, scattering length, effective range and compositeness are determined to reveal important information about the nature of the T$^{+}_{cc}$ state. In addition, an unexpected dependence of the production rate on track multiplicity is observed.

Excited J -- Resonances in Meson-Meson Scattering from Lattice QCD

Understanding the excited light meson spectrum is vital to our understanding of how quarks and gluons bind to become hadrons. This sector is home to a plethora of states including hadrons laying outside the quark model. Distinguishing the exotics from the rest of the spectrum would be made easier if we first had a handle on the light qq¯ spectrum. I present the first determination of excited light JP C = 1--, 2--, 3-- resonances in meson-meson scattering at the SU(3) flavor point from lattice QCD. This system can be described in the context of pseudoscalar-vector elastic scattering and I determine two 1-- resonances; a lighter broader state followed by a heavier narrow state, one broad 2-- resonance, and one narrow 3-- resonance. This is the first calculation in lattice QCD that successfully extracts two resonances from the same partial wave, as well as the first calculation of a light 2-- resonance. I present the results in terms of the physical omega*/J , phi*/J resonances decaying into final states pi rho, KK¯*, eta omega and others, and compare to experiment as well as a popular phenomenological model.
