Machine tools and fixtures: A compilation

As part of NASA's Technology Utilizations Program, a compilation was made of technological developments regarding machine tools, jigs, and fixtures that have been produced, modified, or adapted to meet requirements of the aerospace program. The compilation is divided into three sections that include: (1) a variety of machine tool applications that offer easier and more efficient production techniques; (2) methods, techniques, and hardware that aid in the setup, alignment, and control of machines and machine tools to further quality assurance in finished products: and (3) jigs, fixtures, and adapters that are ancillary to basic machine tools and aid in realizing their greatest potential.

Spacecraft utensil/hand cleansing fixture

A system concept for an inflight utensil/hand cleansing fixture is described which includes the following features: (1) capability for efficient cleansing and rinsing of utensils or hands, and (2) provision for general waste fluid disposal. The design concept provides for the capability of functioning for a 30 day shuttle mission containing seven occupants/users. The long range goal is to provide a functioning system capable of operating for missions of at least 120 days. The fixture is a self-contained unit that can be installed in the standard water interface requirements. Service to the unit is a single source of unheated potable water and water is discharged from the unit into a single return waste connection. In addition, the design includes provisions for the intake and discharge of purge air and the discharge of evolved gases. Both the air and the gases are filtered or processed in the assembly before releasing them into the habitability area.

"Three-dimensional" vibration fixture

Simple cube-shaped fixture reduces vibration-test time to one-third required previously. Three units are supported at once. During one run each unit is tested along one of axes. Units are repositioned on second run for tests along different axes. Three runs complete test; fixture can be set up to test small, lightweight high-production units.

Development of a ferromagnetic rotary vacuum sealed spacecraft spin fixture

A number of successful spacecraft tests were conducted on an environmental spin fixture which utilizes a ferrofluidic rotary vacuum seal. The 27 cm (10.5 inch) diameter fixture drive shaft supports and spins communications satellites during flight acceptance testing in a thermal vacuum chamber. The drive shaft rotary seal serves to maintain the canned drive system electro-mechanical components at ambient pressure within the space simulator. The ferromagnetic fluid seal was chosen over conventional mechanical sealing devices for its zero-leakage, zero-wear, and minimum friction drag characteristics, as well as its high reliability potential.

X-band slotted array test panel and test fixture

Data from the development of the X-band slotted array test band, X-band array test fixture, and the X/L-band test fixture for the Support Instrumentation Requirements program are documented. An X-band array was built and installed with an existing L-band module in such a way as to permit antenna pattern measurements in a series of nonplanar configurations that might simulate the thermal effects of nonuniform solar illumination on the array in a space environment. This was accomplished with eight X-band subpanels mounted adjacently on individually adjusted supports which were then co-mounted to a larger frame which served to mount and physically distort the existing L-band module. The L-band module is a heavy electrical breadboard array section that was fabricated to demonstrate the performance capabilities of a slotted waveguide array at L-band frequencies. Drawings, mechanical analysis, and descriptions of test configurations are presented.

Honing fixture for welded electrodes

Fixture for refacing electrodes mounts directly on welding machine. Up-and-down movement of stone against electrode is done manually or with designed motor drive. Fixture is used in lieu of manually refinishing electrodes with emory paper or other abrasive. It produces uniformly flat, parallel electrodes in less time, saving cost on production time.

Handling Fixture for Solar-Cell Arrays

Thin cells processed and stored safely. Major parts of handling fixture hold components of solar cell array modules safely, yet allow assembly process to proceed without interference. Fixture used with or without internal vacuum. Concept allows handling of thin, relatively-fragile cells, and offers potential for savings in silicon material and cost.

Description of a magnetic bearing test fixture

A description of a microcomputer controlled magnetic bearing test fixture is presented. Parameters which are controlled are magnetic bearing current and gaps. Parameters which are measured are magnetic bearing gaps, magnetic flux in the bearing gaps, and bearing forces. The test fixture is configured for bearing elements similar to those used in a laboratory test model Annular Momentum Control Device (AMCD).

Universal test fixture for monolithic mm-wave integrated circuits calibrated with an augmented TRD algorithm

The design and evaluation of a novel fixturing technique for characterizing millimeter wave solid state devices is presented. The technique utilizes a cosine-tapered ridge guide fixture and a one-tier de-embedding procedure to produce accurate and repeatable device level data. Advanced features of this technique include nondestructive testing, full waveguide bandwidth operation, universality of application, and rapid, yet repeatable, chip-level characterization. In addition, only one set of calibration standards is required regardless of the device geometry.

Calibration Fixture For Welding Robot

Compact, lightweight device used in any position or orientation. Calibration fixture designed for use on robotic gas/tungsten-arc welding torch equipped with vision-based seam-tracking system. Through optics in hollow torch cylinder, video camera obtains image of weld, viewing along line of sight coaxial with welding electrode. Attaches to welding-torch cylinder in place of gas cup normally attached in use. By use of longer or shorter extension tube, fixture accommodates welding electrode of unusual length.
