An Extensible Software and Communication Platform for Distributed Energy Resource Management

This paper introduces a novel Distributed Extensible Grid Control (DEGC) software and communication platform to facilitate the control of distributed energy resources on electric grids. The DEGC software platform leverages state-of-the-art advances in secure, distributed communication and decentralized authorization and authentication. We discuss how these advances enable the kind of robust and secure communication required for a distributed grid control platform, and show how DEGC applies these technologies to the agile development and deployment of grid software through an extensible and flexible API. Here, we describe how DEGC can implement both Volt-VAR voltage magnitude control and Phasor-Based Control as sample applications and demonstrate the DEGC platform in hardware with the demanding Phasor-Based Control test case, and provide performance metrics.

Current Observer Based Predictive Decoupled Power Control Grid-Interactive Inverter

This paper presents a sensor-less current model predictive control (MPC) scheme via a full state observer based current estimator. The grid interactive inverters’ control schemes require current and voltage sensors. Elimination of current sensor enhances the inverter reliability. This paper leverages the inherent characteristics of MPC towards robust current sensor-less grid interactive inverter with LC filter. The observer for inductor current is developed based on the existing capacitor voltage measurement. The estimator dynamic state-space matrices are then obtained through reconstruction of the inverter model with the capacitor voltage and inductor current being the state variables. The controller objectives are to regulate active and reactive power in a decoupled manner. The theoretical expectation, controller performance, and accuracy of the current estimation are verified by conducting a real-time simulation via Typhoon HIL.

Grid Voltage Control Analysis for Heavy-Duty Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

This paper presents an analysis of grid voltage control strategies for heavy-duty electric vehicle charging stations. The performance of three voltage control approaches—including power factor control, standardized volt-volt ampere reactive (VAR) curve control, and customized volt-VAR curve control—are investigated and evaluated for three different sizes of charging stations, including a single-port charging station, a midsized three-port charging station, and six-port travel center. The charging stations are placed on multiple locations of four different types of distribution systems to obtain a comprehensive performance analysis of the voltage control approaches under different scenarios. To quantitively compare the performance of the three voltage control approaches, a series of metrics are designed to quantify the performance and contribute to the comprehensive analysis.

User Manual for Beta Version of TURBO-GRD: A Software System for Interactive Two-Dimensional Boundary/ Field Grid Generation, Modification, and Refinement

TURBO-GRD is a software system for interactive two-dimensional boundary/field grid generation. modification, and refinement. Its features allow users to explicitly control grid quality locally and globally. The grid control can be achieved interactively by using control points that the user picks and moves on the workstation monitor or by direct stretching and refining. The techniques used in the code are the control point form of algebraic grid generation, a damped cubic spline for edge meshing and parametric mapping between physical and computational domains. It also performs elliptic grid smoothing and free-form boundary control for boundary geometry manipulation. Internal block boundaries are constructed and shaped by using Bezier curve. Because TURBO-GRD is a highly interactive code, users can read in an initial solution, display its solution contour in the background of the grid and control net, and exercise grid modification using the solution contour as a guide. This process can be called an interactive solution-adaptive grid generation.

High-Efficiency Food Production in a Renewable Energy Based Micro-Grid

Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) systems can be used to produce high-quality, desirable food year round, and the fresh produce can positively contribute to the health and well being of residents in communities with difficult supply logistics. While CEA has many positive outcomes for a remote community, the associated high electric demands have prohibited widespread implementation in what is typically already a fully subscribed power generation and distribution system. Recent advances in CEA technologies as well as renewable power generation, storage, and micro-grid management are increasing system efficiency and expanding the possibilities for enhancing community supporting infrastructure without increasing demands for outside supplied fuels. We will present examples of how new lighting, nutrient delivery, and energy management and control systems can enable significant increases in food production efficiency while maintaining high yields in CEA.Examples from Alaskan communities where initial incorporation of renewable power generation, energy storage and grid management techniques have already reduced diesel fuel consumption for electric generation by more than 40 and expanded grid capacity will be presented. We will discuss how renewable power generation, efficient grid management to extract maximum community service per kW, and novel energy storage approaches can expand the food production, water supply, waste treatment, sanitation and other community support services without traditional increases of consumable fuels supplied from outside the community. These capabilities offer communities with a range of choices to enhance their communities. The examples represent a synergy of technology advancement efforts to develop sustainable community support systems for future space-based human habitats and practical implementation of infrastructure components to increase efficiency and enhance health and well-being in remote communities today and tomorrow.

Cold Climate Integrated Heat Pump with Energy Storage for Grid-Responsive Control

An air-source integrated heat pump (ASIHP) is a multifunctional unit, capable of space cooling, space heating, and water heating. We developed a packaged cold climate ASIHP, using a multi-stage compressor, capable of working down to -25°C, and providing 100% rated capacity down to -15°C with a heating COP > 2.2. An innovative system configuration and related controls were developed to solve charge balance in the integrated heat pump, smooth charge migration, and mode transition among multiple working modes. Extensive laboratory investigations for individual modes were performed to verify the performance. Its integrated heating capability provides speedy water heating to meet domestic hot water use and store heating energy in a phase change material ceiling/panel. The heating energy storage can be used to shift the load when the electricity price is high. Based on the performance data and a calibrated model from the laboratory testing, we conducted building energy simulations driven by a model predictive control, using EnergyPlus in one U.S. cold climate zone to investigate the grid-responsive control strategy and estimate the utility cost reduction potential.

Grid spacing control with variation diminishing splines

Methods used to specify and control two and three dimensional grids on which numerical solutions of partial differential equations may be obtained were studied. While initially focusing on grid generation, the research will evolve into a consideration of the interaction of grid generation with the solution of a partial differential equation. The multisurface method of grid generation was used to continuously patch a grid onto an existing grid. In the resulting grid the elements of the Jacobian matrix must be continuous across the boundary between the original grid and the patched grid. Programs were written which accept as input the coordinates of the original grid and the desired new boundary, and then use the three-surface or four-surface version of the multisurface method to extend the original grid out to a new boundary.

Positive-Sequence Modeling of Droop-Controlled Grid-Forming Inverters for Transient Stability Simulation of Transmission Systems

Here, this paper describes a positive-sequence model to represent two widely reported droop-controlled grid-forming inverters for bulk power systems simulation study. Methods of how to develop the equivalent voltage source behind impedance to represent inverters with and without inner control loops, modeling of P-f and Q-V droop controls, active and reactive power limiting modeling, and modeling of fault current limiting controls are described in detail. The model is implemented in commercially available positive-sequence simulation tools and compared with detailed electromagnetic transient models in both a single-grid-forming-inverter infinite-bus system and a modified IEEE 39-bus system. Finally, the model is tested on the full US Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC) system. Study results show that the model has a good level of accuracy compared to the detailed EMT models, and at the same time also achieves a high computational efficiency, which is suitable for the bulk power system simulation study.

Grid Application and Controls Development for Medium-Voltage SiC-Based Grid Interconnects

This paper studies, the grid-interconnection requirements of directly connected medium-voltage (MV) Silicon Carbide-based (SiC-based) converters and details the necessary control implementations. These power electronic converters follow the interconnection standard IEEE 1547-2018, but can also have additional controls supported by the microgrid standards in IEEE 2030.7, which is demonstrated in this work. Additionally, this paper defines the grid applications realized by these directly connected medium-voltage power electronic converters at the distribution scale and demonstrates results. The controls for the studied grid applications are then developed and implemented on the controller. The paper also includes details of the control algorithm development and validations of the control algorithm through hardware-in-the-loop results.

Grid-forming Control of Single- and Two-Stage Solar PV Systems with Mode Transition

Legacy power systems once dominated by con-ventional synchronous machines are transitioning into systems driven by fast-acting power-electronic converters that integrate renewable resources. The majority of integrated renewables such as PV and wind bring down system inertia and can cause stability issues due to their volatile nature. The state-of-the-art grid-forming (GFM) control is proven to enhance system inertia and stability in low-inertia systems. However, most of the existing GFM inverters are applied for battery systems, which are much more expensive than PV. Motivated by this, in this paper we propose a holistic grid-forming (GFM) control strategy for PV systems without the need of energy storage. The proposed strategy is developed on the secondary level of the grid-forming control that enables the PV inverter to operate smoothly among islanded, synchronization, GFM, and limited grid-forming (LGF) modes. The practical criteria for determining the operation modes are established and implemented based on the grid operation scenarios. Here, the proposed design is successfully validated by case studies with a laboratory prototype using Siemens Software Defined Inverters.
