In situ polymerized succinonitrile-based solid polymer electrolytes for lithium ion batteries

Novel solid polymer electrolytes based on succinonitrile (SN) plastic crystal electrolyte (SN-PCE) and polymerized ionic liquid (PIL) has been successfully synthesized via an in-situ method. The fabricated electrolyte (PIL-SN-PCE) is uniformly inlayed into the supporting matrix of polyimide, which effectively ameliorates the mechanical properties of the electrolyte. PIL can effectively enhance the thermal stability of electrolytes up to 300 °C and mitigate the parasitic reactions between the electrolytes and the electrodes. PIL-SN-PCE exhibits a remarkable oxidation ability up to 5.4 V vs Li/Li + and a high room temperature ionic conductivity of 6.54 × 10 -4 S cm -1 . Furthermore, in-situ formed interface in PIL-SN-PCE guarantee an excellent compatibility with different electrodes, which can effectively improve the cycle stability and rate performances of both half-cells and full cells. Finally, PIL-SN-PCE is considered as a promising electrolyte for high energy density lithium-ion batteries.

What limits the efficiency of GaN-based superluminescent light-emitting diodes (SLEDs)?

Gallium-nitride-based SLEDs are attractive light sources for augmented reality displays and other applications. However, the electrical-to-optical power conversion efficiency (PCE) of SLEDs is still far below the record-high values reported for LEDs. Utilizing advanced numerical device simulation, this paper investigates the internal physical processes that cause the low PCE of SLEDs. The poor hole conductivity strongly reduces the electrical efficiency, similar to laser diodes. However, in contrast to laser diodes, the rising carrier density in the active layers is identified as main reason for enhanced Auger recombination that severely limits the internal quantum efficiency. Design improvement options are demonstrated.

Over 15% Efficiency Polymer Solar Cells Enabled by Conformation Tuning of Newly Designed Asymmetric Small‐Molecule Acceptors

Abstract The prosperous period of polymer solar cells (PSCs) has witnessed great progress in molecule design methods to promote power conversion efficiency (PCE). Designing asymmetric structures has been proved effective in tuning energy level and morphology, which has drawn strong attention from the PSC community. Two hepta‐ring and octa‐ring asymmetric small molecular acceptors (SMAs) (IDTP‐4F and IDTTP‐4F) with S‐shape and C‐shape confirmations are developed to study the relationship between conformation shapes and PSC efficiencies. The similarity of absorption and energy levels between two SMAs makes the conformation a single variable. Additionally, three wide‐bandgap polymer donors (PM6, S1, and PM7) are chosen to prove the universality of the relationship between conformation and photovoltaic performance. Consequently, the champion PCE afforded by PM7: IDTP‐4F is as high as 15.2% while that of PM7: IDTTP‐4F is 13.8%. Moreover, the S‐shape IDTP‐4F performs obviously better than their IDTTP‐4F counterparts in PSCs regardless of the polymer donors, which confirms that S‐shape conformation performs better than the C‐shape one. This work provides an insight into how conformations of asymmetric SMAs affect PCEs, specific functions of utilizing different polymer donors to finely tune the active‐layer morphology and another possibility to reach an excellent PCE over 15%.

Area-Scalable Zn 2 SnO 4 Electron Transport Layer for Highly Efficient and Stable Perovskite Solar Modules

The development of a scalable chemical bath deposition (CBD) process facilitates the realization of electron-transporting layers (ETLs) for large-area perovskite solar modules (PSMs). In this work, a method to prepare a uniform and scalable thick Zn 2 SnO 4 ETL by CBD, which yielded high-performance PSMs, is reported. This Zn 2 SnO 4 ETL exhibits excellent electrical properties and enhanced optical transmittance in the visible region. Moreover, the Zn 2 SnO 4 ETL influences the perovskite layer formation, yielding enhanced crystallinity, increased grain size, and a smoother surface, thus facilitating electron extraction and collection from the perovskite to the ETL. Zn 2 SnO 4 thereby yields PSMs with a remarkable photovoltaic performance, low hysteresis index, and high device reproducibility. The champion PSM exhibited a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 22.59%, being among the highest values published so far. In addition, the CBD Zn 2 SnO 4 -based PSMs exhibit high stability, retaining more than 88% of initial efficiency over 1000 h under continuous illumination. This demonstrates that CBD Zn 2 SnO 4 is an appropriate ETL for high-efficiency PSMs and a viable new process for their industrialization.

Low Temperature Aggregation Transitions in N3 and Y6 Acceptors Enable Double‐Annealing Method That Yields Hierarchical Morphology and Superior Efficiency in Nonfullerene Organic Solar Cells

Abstract Thermal transition of organic solar cells (OSCs) constituent materials are often insufficiently researched, resulting in trial‐and‐error rather than rational approaches to annealing strategies to improve domain purity to enhance the power conversion efficiency. Despite the potential utility, little is known about the thermal transitions of the modern high‐performance acceptors Y6 and N3. Here, by using an optical method, it is discovered that the acceptor N3 has a clear solid‐state aggregation transition at 82 °C. This unusually low transition not only explains prior optimization protocols, but the transition informs and enables a double‐annealing method that can fine‐tune aggregation and the device morphology. Compared with 16.6% efficiency for PM6:N3:PC 71 BM control devices, higher efficiency of 17.6% is obtained through the improved protocol. Morphology characterization with x‐ray scattering methods reveals the formation of a multilength scale morphology. Moreover, the double‐annealing method is illustrated and easily transferred and validated with Y6‐based devices, using the transition of Y6 at 102 °C. As a result, the PCE improved from 16.0% to 16.8%. Design of high‐performance acceptors with yet lower aggregation transitions might be required for OSCs to successfully transition to low thermal budget industrial processing methods where annealing temperatures on plastic substrates have to be kept low.

The first experimental evidence for improved nanomechanical properties of calcium silicate hydrate by polycarboxylate ether and graphene oxide

Graphene oxide (GO) efficiently enhances macroscale mechanical properties of cement-based materials. Yet the nanoscale reinforcing mechanism of GO for calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H), the key binding phase of concrete, remains poorly understood. Moreover, how polycarboxylate ether (PCE)-based superplasticizers affect the nanomechanical properties of C-S-H remains unclear. The intrinsic mechanical properties of the nanocomposites are measured using high-pressure X-ray diffraction. The influences of GO and PCE on the local Ca and Si environments are probed using X-ray absorption spectroscopy. For the first time, we evidence that PCE-induced well-dispersed GO nanoplatelets strengthen the C-S-H basal planes, whereas poorly water-dispersed GO weakly interacts with basal planes and does not strengthen in plane Casingle bondO bonds. Both PCE and GO only slightly strengthen C-S-H's c-axis. Here, the bulk modulus of C-S-H/PCE/GO nanocomposite is 190% than pure C-S-H. Functional groups of PCE and GO prefer interacting with the Casingle bondO sheets of C-S-Hs instead of silicate tetrahedra.

Carbazole-Based Hole Transport Polymer for Methylammonium-Free Tin-Lead Perovskite Solar Cells with Enhanced Efficiency and Stability

As the most commonly used hole transport material (HTM) in tin-lead (Sn-Pb) perovskite solar cells (PSCs), poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrenesulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) limits the power conversion efficiency (PCE) and stability of the PSCs due to its acidic characteristics. Herein, an easily synthesized polymer HTM poly[(phenyl)imino[9-(2-ethylhexyl)carbazole]-2,7-diyl] (CzAn) with a shallow highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) level of -4.95 eV is used in a p-i-n structure, methylammonium-free, Sn-Pb PSC to replace PEDOT:PSS. Upon optimization using doping and surface engineering, high quality Sn-Pb PSCs could be successfully fabricated, boosting the PCE to 22.6% (stabilized PCE of 21.3%) compared with 21.2% for PEDOT:PSS. The perovskite films prepared on the modified CzAn HTM possess improved crystallinity, reduced trap-state density, and larger carrier mobility resulting in PSCs with greatly improved stability.

A review of Sb 2 Se 3 photovoltaic absorber materials and thin-film solar cells

Energy generated from environmentally friendly, cost-effective solar cells is a key aspect for developing a clean renewable-energy economy. Non-toxic and Earth-abundant materials with high absorption coefficient (>10 5 cm -1 ) and optimal bandgap (1-1.5 eV) have received great attention as photovoltaic (PV) absorber layers during the last few decades. Among them, antimony selenide (Sb 2 Se 3 ) has been a promising PV absorber, with steadily increasing power-conversion efficiency (PCE) compared to other emerging compounds. Very recent studies showed that high-quality ZnO:Al/ZnO/CdS/TiO 2 /Sb 2 Se 3 /MoSe 2 /Mo devices with PCE of 9.2% can be fabricated using cost-effective novel compounds. Considering these recent advances, this article provides an overview of the material properties of Sb2Se3 thin films and the recent progress made with Sb 2 Se 3 -based solar cells. Furthermore, analysis of Sb 2 Se 3 -based thin-film solar cells has also shown that the devices have relatively good light management due to their suitable bandgap and high absorption coefficient, whereas carrier management, i.e. collection efficiency of photo-generated carriers, needs significant improvement. Overall, this study provides background knowledge on material properties and device performance and suggests main research directions to overcome the limiting factors of solar cell performance.

Nonfullerene Acceptor Featuring Unique Self‐Regulation Effect for Organic Solar Cells with 19 % Efficiency

Abstract The blend nanomorphology of electron‐donor (D) and ‐acceptor (A) materials is of vital importance to achieving highly efficient organic solar cells. Exogenous additives especially aromatic additives are always needed to further optimize the nanomorphology of blend films, which is hardly compatible with industrial manufacture. Herein, we proposed a unique approach to meticulously modulate the aggregation behavior of NFAs in both crystal and thin film nanomorphology via self‐regulation effect. Nonfullerene acceptor Z9 was designed and synthesized by tethering phenyl groups on the inner side chains of the Y6 backbone. Compared with Y6, the tethered phenyl groups participated in the molecular aggregation via the π–π stacking of phenyl‐phenyl and phenyl‐2‐(5,6‐difluoro‐3‐oxo‐2,3‐dihydro‐1H‐inden‐1‐ylidene)malononitrile (IC‐2F) groups, which induced 3D charge transport with phenyl‐mediated super‐exchange electron coupling. Moreover, ordered molecular packing with suitable phase separation was observed in Z9‐based blend films. High power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 19.0 % (certified PCE of 18.6 %) for Z9‐based devices were achieved without additives, indicating the great potential of the self‐regulation strategy in NFA design.

Scalable Two–Step Production of High–Efficiency Perovskite Solar Cells and Modules

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) fabricated in laboratories have already achieved power conversion efficiency (PCE) comparable to market-dominant crystalline silicon solar cells. However, this promising photovoltaic technology suffers from severe loss of PCE during scaling up, limiting its progress toward commercialization. One critical question is to develop scalable, low-cost, high throughput, and well-controlled production methods to deposit high-quality perovskite films. Among various approaches, two-step sequential deposition methods have their unique advantages but have been long overlooked. This review provides an overview of two-step methods for fabricating efficient and stable perovskite solar modules (PSMs). We first discuss the mechanisms of two-step perovskite conversion and advanced engineering approaches to modulate the perovskite formation process. We survey the progress of efficient PSCs prepared by different two-step methods and compare the advantages and disadvantages of each method for scalable production of PSMs. Particularly, we highlight that the vapor-based two-step methods are promising for high-throughput in-line production of PSMs. Finally, we provide insights into the challenges and outlook of the industrialization of two-step processes for producing PSMs.

Chemometric modeling of power conversion efficiency of organic dyes in dye sensitized solar cells for the future renewable energy

The present study reports chemometric modeling of power conversion efficiency (PCE) of dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) using the biggest available data set till date which comprises around 1200 dyes covering 7 chemical classes. To extract the best structural features required for higher PCE, we have developed multiple partial least squares (PLS) quantitative structure-property relationship (QSPR) models for the Triphenylamine, Phenothiazine, Indoline, Porphyrin, Coumarin, Carbazole and Diphenylamine chemical classes using descriptors derived from the best subset selection method followed by selection of best five models in each dataset based on the Mean Absolute Error (MAE) values. The models were validated both internally and externally followed by the consensus predictions employing “Intelligent Consensus Predictor” tool to examine whether the quality of predictions can be improved with the “intelligent” selection of multiple PLS models. The quality of predictions for the respective external sets showed that the consensus models (CM) are better than the individual models (IM) in most of the cases. From the insights of the developed models, we concluded that attributes like a packed structure toward higher conductivity of electrons, auxiliary donor fragment of aromatic tertiary amines, number of thiophenes inducing the bathochromic shift and augmenting the absorption, presence of additional electron donors, enhancement of electron-donating abilities, number of non-aromatic conjugated C(sp 2 ) which helps as conjugation extension units to broaden the absorption and highly conjugated $π$-systems exert positive contributions to the PCE. On the contrary, features negatively contributing to PCE are the followings: fragments which lower the tendency of localized $π–π*$ transition, fragments related to larger volume and surface area of dyes along with hydrophobicity resulting in poor adhesion, fragment RC = N causing dye hydrolysis, steric hindrance for π electronic mobility, fragments enhancing polarity, etc. Finally, the identified features from the best QSPR model of the coumarin dataset was employed in designing of ten more efficient coumarin dyes (predicted %PCE ranging from 8.93 to 10.62) than the existing ones.

High‐Speed Slot‐Die Coating with Donor‐Priority Rapid Aggregation Kinetics for Improved Morphology and Efficiency in Ecofriendly Organic Solar Cells

Abstract Solution‐processable organic solar cells (OSCs) represent a promising renewable photovoltaic technology with significant potential for eco‐compatible production. While high power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) have been achieved in OSCs, scaling this technology for high‐throughput manufacturing remains challenging. Key reason lies in the lack of efficient control strategies for the complex and long‐duration morphology evolution during high‐speed coating process with ecofriendly solvents. Here, a donor‐priority rapid aggregation process (DP‐RAP) scheme is proposed to solve this issue by adjusting the aggregation kinetics of donor and acceptor components. DP‐RAP enables blends with a nanoscale fiber network structure and favorable crystallinity, which contributes to balanced carrier transport and reduced recombination losses. As a result, the PCE is improved from 14.3% (reference) to 17.4% (DP‐RAP) for ultra‐high speed coated PM6:BTP‐eC9 devices in atmosphere, which is one of the highest values for non‐halogenated solvent‐processed solar cells at coating speeds of 500 mm s −1 . Moreover, the DP‐RAP based devices remain a stable PCE of approximately 17.4% across a broad range of coating speeds (20–500 mm s −1 ), illustrating its tolerance to the varied manufacturing conditions. This work highlights a promising avenue for the high‐speed, ecofriendly production of efficient OSCs, pushing the boundaries of practical manufacturing in renewable energy technologies.

On the influence of over-parameterization in manifold based surrogates and deep neural operators

Constructing accurate and generalizable approximators (surrogate models) for complex physico-chemical processes exhibiting highly non-smooth dynamics is challenging. The main question is what type of surrogate models we should construct and should these models be under-parameterized or over-parameterized. In this work, we propose new developments and perform comparisons for two promising approaches: manifold-based polynomial chaos expansion (m-PCE) and the deep neural operator (DeepONet), and we examine the effect of over-parameterization on generalization. While m-PCE enables the construction of a mapping by first identifying low-dimensional embeddings of the input functions, parameters, and quantities of interest (QoIs), a neural operator learns the nonlinear mapping via the use of deep neural networks. Here, we demonstrate the performance of these methods in terms of generalization accuracy by solving the 2D time-dependent Brusselator reaction-diffusion system with uncertainty sources, modeling an autocatalytic chemical reaction between two species. We first propose an extension of the m-PCE by constructing a mapping between latent spaces formed by two separate embeddings of the input functions and the output QoIs. To further enhance the accuracy of the DeepONet, we introduce weight self-adaptivity in the loss function. We demonstrate that the performance of m-PCE and DeepONet is comparable for cases of relatively smooth input-output mappings. However, when highly non-smooth dynamics is considered, DeepONet shows higher approximation accuracy. We also find that for m-PCE, modest over-parameterization leads to better generalization, both within and outside of distribution, whereas aggressive over-parameterization leads to over-fitting. In contrast, an even highly over-parameterized DeepONet leads to better generalization for both smooth and non-smooth dynamics. Furthermore, we compare the performance of the above models with another recently proposed operator learning model, the Fourier Neural Operator, and show that its over-parameterization also leads to better generalization. Taken together, our studies show that m-PCE can provide very good accuracy at very low training cost, whereas a highly over-parameterized DeepONet can provide better accuracy and robustness to noise but at higher training cost. In both methods, the inference cost is negligible.

Triple-Halide Bandgap Tuning in Top Cells for Perovskite/Si Tandems

We found Br/I mixed perovskite with high fraction of Cs can steadily incorporate Cl-based perovskite to tune the bandgap. The resulting films exhibit significant improvement in the mobility and lifetime of photocarriers. In 1.67eV wide-bandgap perovskite top cells optimized for perovskite/Si tandems, we achieved a great reducing of voltage-of-open-circuit (VOC) deficit from 0.57eV to 0.45eV, which is among the best of perovskite top cells in Si tandems reported so far. The stabilized PCE is improved from 17-18% to 20%, featured with high VOC (1.22V) and high FF (83%). This advance in wide-bandgap top cells holds promise for improving perovskite/Si tandems.

Dielectric constant engineering of nonfullerene acceptors enables a record fill factor of 83.58% and a high efficiency of 20.80% in organic solar cells

Organic solar cells (OSCs) have achieved power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) surpassing 20%, but their development remains hindered by the inherently low dielectric constant (εr) of organic semiconductors, which limits charge transport and contributes to serious recombination losses. Herein, we present a comprehensive strategy to overcome the challenge by engineering the dielectric properties of nonfullerene acceptors (NFAs). Two Y-series NFAs of BTP-N3F and BTP-C3F have been synthesized featuring trifluoromethyl (CF 3 ) end-capped alkyl side chains. This molecular design significantly enhances the dipole moment and ε r (up to ∼5.9) when compared to the reference acceptor Y6 (∼3), reducing the exciton binding energy (E b ) and improving charge transport. Furthermore, the incorporation of a high-εr polymer additive, poly(pentafluorostyrene) (PPFS), synergistically improves the active layer morphology and dielectric properties, enabling efficient charge extraction and reduced recombination losses. Devices based on the optimized D18-Cl/BTP-C3F system have achieved a record-high fill factor (FF) of 83.58% and an impressive PCE of 20.80%, setting a new benchmark for OSCs. Finally, our results underscore the pivotal role of ε r in enhancing device performance and establish a versatile pathway for advancing OSC efficiency and stability through molecular and morphological optimization.

Ultrarapid crystallization of low-dimensional perovskite with excellent stability for future high-throughput fabrication

We report perovskite solar cells (PSCs) as an emerging photovoltaic technique have achieved exceptional power conversion efficiency (PCE) up to 25.7% after fast development over the past decade. But currently some critical issues are still not well addressed in terms of realizing large-scale fabrication, for example, fast fabrication of high-quality perovskite film with good stability. Here, we demonstrate the use of stable and fast-crystallizing low-dimensional (LD) perovskite thin films as the light absorber with only a 10 s annealing time at 250 °C, delivering a PCE of 18.16%. The crystallization and photoelectric properties of LD perovskite are well illustrated. The reduction in the annealing time will dramatically increase the productivity of PSCs. The PSCs based on rapidly annealed LD perovskite thin films exhibit excellent stability, with only 12% loss of PCE after 1000 h storage at 85 °C and 40-70% relative humidity.

Risk Assessment of Rare Events in Probabilistic Power Flow via Hybrid Multi-Surrogate Method

The risks associated with rare events threatening the security of power system operation are of paramount importance to power system planners and operators. To analyze the risks caused by high-impact, low-frequency rare events, an immensely large number of samples are typically required for the Monte-Carlo (MC) method on the high-fidelity power system model to achieve a sufficient accuracy, thereby rendering this approach computationally prohibitive. To handle this problem efficiently, it is desirable to construct a surrogate model for the power system response. However, the straightforward MC sampling of the low-fidelity surrogate can lead to biased results in the low-probability tail regions that are vital to risk assessment. Moreover, a single surrogate is unable to handle the topology uncertainties caused by random branch outages. To overcome these issues, we propose a hybrid multi-surrogate (HMS) method based on the polynomial chaos expansion (PCE) with low-probability tail events reevaluated by the high-fidelity model through a probabilistic analysis. This method improves the computational efficiency of the MC method for rare-event risk assessment by leveraging multi-fidelity models while retaining the desired accuracy. Simulations conducted in three test systems verify the excellent performances of the HMS method.
