ERTS-A data as a teaching and research tool in the Department of Geology

The author has identified the following significant results. The project was an attempt to integrate ERTS-1 data into teaching introductory, specialized, and graduate courses in the Department of Geology, University of Alaska. This data was to be utilized principally through a specially selected, high quality collection of black and white, and color 9.5 mosaics of the State of Alaska. In completing these tasks, the data accumulated has proved highly useful in a variety of ways including: (1) discussions of the uses and availability of ERTS imagery; (2) as a medium for talking about and showing various areas of Alaska; (3) in discussing geology in general; and (4) as an aid in doing research and as possible research topics themselves. Use of ERTS-1 imagery in geology proved highly successful and its use is now an integral part of many courses.

Redox flow cell energy storage systems

The redox flow cell energy storage system being developed by NASA for use in remote power systems and distributed storage installations for electric utilities is presented. The system under consideration is an electrochemical storage device which utilizes the oxidation and reduction of two fully soluble redox couples (acidified chloride solutions of chromium and iron) as active electrode materials separated by a highly selective ion exchange membrane. The reactants are contained in large storage tanks and pumped through a stack of redox flow cells where the electrochemical reactions take place at porous carbon felt electrodes. Redox equipment has allowed the incorporation of state of charge readout, stack voltage control and system capacity maintenance (rebalance) devices to regulate cells in a stack jointly. A 200 W, 12 V system with a capacity of about 400 Wh has been constructed, and a 2 kW, 10kWh system is planned.

Compositions of energetic particle populations in interplanetary space

Study of the compositions of energetic particle populations in interplanetary space is reviewed emphasizing observations of helium and heavier particles with energies below about 10 to 20 MeV/nucleon. Three dominant constituents of interplanetary particles are considered: solar flare particles, co-rotating particle streams, and a so-called 'anomalous cosmic ray' component. The recent discovery of a class of solar flare particle events with heavy elements indicates highly selective solar injection mechanisms. Observations of positive radial intensity gradients and anisotropies in co-rotating particle streams suggest the existence of large-scale interplanetary acceleration in a region extending from about 2 to 4 AU. Although present observations exclude the sun as a direct source of the 'anomalous cosmic ray' component, its origin is still debated.

ROLM computers in the flight testing of the Fokker F29 aircraft

The design, development, installation, and operation of the test equipment (MRVS) is discussed. The main feature of the MRVS is continuous recording on an instrumentation recorder data of up to 1500 parameters with a total sample rate of up to 10,000 samples per second. In order to compress the evaluation and calibration time period, the following additional requirements were set for two test systems: (1) recording of selected parameters, time tagged on computer compatible tape (CCT); (2) recording of selected high bandwidth signals and ad hoc parameters on analog tape; (3) onboard presentation of calibrated parameter data, in engineering units, in numerical as well as graphical form for: system checkout during pre-, in- and post-flight, and quick look analysis during in-flight; (4) real time presentation on the ground by telemetry for: flight monitoring, takeoff and landing measurements, and noise measurements; and (5) data processing on the ground on the Fokker-NLR computer network.

Functional membranes. Present and future

The present situation and the future development of the functional membrane are discussed. It is expected that functional membranes will play increasingly greater roles in the chemical industry of the coming decade. These membranes are formed from polymer films, liquid membranes or bilayer membranes. The two most important technologies based on the polymeric membrane are reverse osmosis and ion exchange. The liquid membrane is used for separation of ionic species; an extension of the solvent extraction process. By using appropriate ligands and ionophores, highly selective separations are realized. The active transport is made possible if the physical and chemical potentials are applied to the transport process. More advanced functional membranes may be designed on the basis of the synthetic bilayer membrane.

Calculated performance of a Wolter type I X-ray telescope coated by multilayers

Deposition of multilayered diffraction coatings on the reflecting surfaces of a Wolter type I X-ray telescope offers the potential of using Bragg reflection to achieve enhanced effective area in selected high energy bandpasses. The structure of a gold-carbon multilayer has been optimized for study of 1.8 A iron-line emission with an X-ray telescope designed for observations from Spacelab. The response of this mirror assembly has been calculated as a function of X-ray energy and the resulting effective area is enhanced by a factor of 10 and peaks at 160 sq cm with a bandpass of 0.4 keV FWHM. This enhanced response is sufficient to allow study of the angular distribution of iron-line emission from the 20 brightest cluster X-ray sources during a 7 day Spacelab mission. The possibility of achieving X-ray imaging in narrow bandpasses at even higher energies has been investigated. It is concluded that it should be possible to achieve effective areas of approximately 5 sq cm in bandpasses approximately 1 keV wide for energies in the 15-25 keV range, a spectral region of much importance during the impulsive phase of solar flares.

High-order low-pass implicit tangent filters for use in finite area calculations

High-order implicit tangent filters are developed. The implicit tangent filters possess a highly selective amplitude response function and they can be applied relatively close to a boundary. Comparisons are made between the implicit and the traditional or explicit filters. Numerical simulations are performed to test the response in a limited-area model. An algorithm to maximize computing efficiency is presented. All tests indicate the desirability and utility of the implicit tangent filter.

Enhanced spectral efficiency using bandwidth switchable SAW filtering for mobile satellite communications systems

Currently proposed mobile satellite communications systems require a high degree of flexibility in assignment of spectral capacity to different geographic locations. Conventionally this results in poor spectral efficiency which may be overcome by the use of bandwidth switchable filtering. Surface acoustic wave (SAW) technology makes it possible to provide banks of filters whose responses may be contiguously combined to form variable bandwidth filters with constant amplitude and phase responses across the entire band. The high selectivity possible with SAW filters, combined with the variable bandwidth capability, makes it possible to achieve spectral efficiencies over the allocated bandwidths of greater than 90 percent, while retaining full system flexibility. Bandwidth switchable SAW filtering (BSSF) achieves these gains with a negligible increase in hardware complexity.

New class of Si-based superlattices - Alternating layers of crystalline Si and porous amorphous Si(1-x)Ge(x) alloys

Superlattices consisting of alternating layers of crystalline Si and porous amorphous Si(1-x)Ge(x) have been fabricated. This is accomplished by first growing a Si/Si(0.7)Ge(0.3) superlattice by molecular beam epitaxy, followed by Ar-ion milling to form mesa structures, and finally by immersion in HF:HNO3:H2O. This solution creates a porous structure similar to that created by anodic etching, and a high selectivity is observed for the conversion of the alloy layers relative to the Si layers. The degree of selectivity is found to depend on alloy-layer thickness and strain. Superlattices have been fabricated from 1-micron wide mesas with Si(0.7)Ge(0.3) layers fully converted to 5-nm thick porous amorphous material.

Investigation of etching techniques for superconductive Nb/Al-Al2O3/Nb fabrication processes

Wet etching, CF4 and SF6 reactive ion etching (RIE), RIE/wet hybrid etching, Cl-based RIE, ion milling, and liftoff techniques have been investigated for use in superconductive Nb/Al-Al2O3/Nb fabrication processes. High-quality superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) junctions have been fabricated using a variety of these etching methods; however, each technique offers distinct tradeoffs for a given process an wafer design. In particular, it was shown that SF6 provides an excellent RIE chemistry for low-voltage anisotropic etching of Nb with high selectivity to Al. The SF6 tool has greatly improved the trilevel resist junction insulation process. Excellent repeatability, selectivity with respect to quartz, and submicron resolution make Cl2 + BCl3 + CHCl3 RIE a very attractive process for trilayer patterning.

SAW based systems for mobile communications satellites

Modern mobile communications satellites, such as INMARSAT 3, EMS, and ARTEMIS, use advanced onboard processing to make efficient use of the available L-band spectrum. In all of these cases, high performance surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices are used. SAW filters can provide high selectivity (100-200 kHz transition widths), combined with flat amplitude and linear phase characteristics; their simple construction and radiation hardness also makes them especially suitable for space applications. An overview of the architectures used in the above systems, describing the technologies employed, and the use of bandwidth switchable SAW filtering (BSSF) is given. The tradeoffs to be considered when specifying a SAW based system are analyzed, using both theoretical and experimental data. Empirical rules for estimating SAW filter performance are given. Achievable performance is illustrated using data from the INMARSAT 3 engineering model (EM) processors.

A linguistic geometry for 3D strategic planning

This paper is a new step in the development and application of the Linguistic Geometry. This formal theory is intended to discover the inner properties of human expert heuristics, which have been successful in a certain class of complex control systems, and apply them to different systems. In this paper we investigate heuristics extracted in the form of hierarchical networks of planning paths of autonomous agents. Employing Linguistic Geometry tools the dynamic hierarchy of networks is represented as a hierarchy of formal attribute languages. The main ideas of this methodology are shown in this paper on the new pilot example of the solution of the extremely complex 3D optimization problem of strategic planning for the space combat of autonomous vehicles. This example demonstrates deep and highly selective search in comparison with conventional search algorithms.
