The distribution of helium, neon, and argon isotopes within Apollo 15 samples results primarily from fractionated solar wind gases, accompanied by small quantities of cosmogenic gases. No unequivocal primordial lunar gases have been detected within various mineral, rock, or glass fragments. A vug from 15555 contains solar wind gases that have abundance ratios similar to those found in the Apollo 12 aluminum foil experiments. A comparison of these Apollo 15 results with previous laser probe mass spectrometric measurements from the gas-rich Kapoeta and Fayetteville meteorites, as well as with analyses of the Apollo 12 and 14 samples, indicates that the mechanism of solar wind implantation, followed by subsequent fractionation of the gases by impact brecciation and heating, was primarily responsible for the incorporation of the original gas phase within solid bodies of the solar system.
Wind-tunnel tests were performed to determine the aerodynamic characteristics of three full-scale vehicles incorporating a unique folding metal wing, and to investigate its deployment characteristics. The static aerodynamic data are presented without analysis.
An electromagnetic levitation apparatus incorporating an electron beam for auxiliary heating and melting has been developed for experiments on containerless vacuum purification and undercooled solidification of high melting materials. Stable levitation of 10-g specimens of molten tungsten has been achieved and a variety of containerless solidification experiments is being performed, including pure polycrystalline castings and single tungsten crystals grown from the undercooled levitated melts.
Cost estimates are determined for redesigned modules. Consideration is given to incorporation of NASA approved components, component screening and documentation, as well as reduced power consumption. Results show that r designed modules will function reliably in a space environment of 50 C and withstand greater than 15 G's of random vibration between 40 Hz and 400 Hz.
A methodology was developed and implemented to allow silicon samples containing intentionally incorporated impurities to be fabricated into finished solar cells under carefully controlled conditions. The electrical and spectral properties were then measured for each group processed.
The paper shows that accuracies of computer classification of species-specific forest cover types from Landsat imagery can be improved by 27% or more through the incorporation of topographic information from digital terrain tapes registered to multidate Landsat imagery. The topographic information improves classification accuracies because many common forest tree species have preferred elevation ranges and slope aspects. These preferences allow the separation of forest cover types which have similar spectral signatures but different species compositions. It is noted that the development of a classification system which uses prior probabilities and sets of prior probabilities conditioned by one or two external variables represents a significant increase in classification power.
A series of static and dynamic tests performed on an Air Cushion Landing System (ACLS) incorporating inelastic trunk are described. The tests were performed on an apparatus which had provisions to isolate heave-pitch and roll motion on the prototype cushion. The results of the test show that the sides of the trunk behave differently from the trunk ends. The tests also demonstrate that the current ACLS designs suffer from low heave damping, low roll stiffness and fan stall problems.
A forced limitation of the motor activity in rats (from 5 to 60 days) results in reduced incorporation of glycine 2-C14 in the total acid insoluble proteins of limb bones and its increase in the teeth and mandibular-maxillary bones. Daily administration of five micrograms of thyrocalcitonine together with polyvinylpyrrolidone normalizes the protein metabolism in the bone tissues during the 40 days of experimentation.
The effects of the incorporation of metal ions into various polyimides on polyimide properties are investigated. Polyimide films derived from 3,3',4,4'-benzophenone tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride (BDTA) 3,3'-diaminobenzophenone (m,m'-DABP), 4,4'-diaminobenzophenone (p,p'-DABP) or 4,4'-oxydianiline were prepared with the concurrent addition of approximately 20 metals in a variety of forms. In general, it is found that the films derived from BDTA + p,p'-DABP were brittle and of poor quality, with brittle films also produced in most of the BDTA + m, m'-DABP polyimides regardless of whether the added metal was hydrate or anhydrous. Thermomechanical analysis, torsional braid analysis, thermal gravimetric analysis, infrared spectral analysis and isothermal studies on many of the polyimide films produced indicate that the softening temperature is generally increased upon the addition of metal ions, at the expense of thermal stability, while no changes in chemical functionality are observed. The best system studied in regard to polymer property enhancement appears to be tri(acetylacetonato)aluminum(III) added to the m, m'-DABP polyamide, which has been found to exhibit four times the lap shear strength of the polyimide alone.
The Small Community Solar Thermal Power Experiment (SCSE) selected an organic rankine cycle (ORC) engine driving a high speed permanent magnet alternator (PMA) as the baseline power conversion subsystem (PCS) design. The back-up conceptual PCS design is a steam engine driving an induction alternator delivering power directly to the grid. The development of the automotive reciprocating simple rankine cycle steam engine and how an engine of similar design might be incorporated into the SCSE is discussed. A description of the third generation automotive engine is included along with some preliminary test data. Tests were conducted with the third generation engine driving an induction alternator delivering power directly to the grid. The purpose of these tests is to further verify the effects of expander inlet temperature, input thermal power level, expansion ratio, and other parameters affecting engine performance to aid in the development of an SCSE PCS.
