Mild Hydrothermal Crystal Growth of Two Luminescing Uranyl Phosphates Exhibiting an Autunite-Type Sheet Structure

Two new layered uranyl phosphate compounds, K(UO 2 )PO 4 (H 2 O) 3 and Na(UO 2 )PO 4 (H 2 O) 1.52 , crystallizing in an autunite-type sheet structure, were successfully synthesized as both single-crystals and polycrystalline powders under mild hydrothermal conditions. The compound K(UO 2 )PO 4 (H 2 O) 3 crystallizes in the tetragonal crystal system with the space group P4/ncc, exhibiting lattice parameters of a = b = 6.99320(7) Å and c = 17.8389(3) Å. Similarly, Na(UO 2 )PO 4 (H 2 O) 1.52 also crystallizes in the tetragonal crystal system, however, in the space group P4/nmm and exhibits lattice parameters of a = b = 6.9787 Å and c = 8.6303(17) Å. Both compounds adopt layered structures, a characteristic feature of uranyl phosphates, and exhibit intense green fluorescence typical for uranyl-containing materials. As a result, the infrared spectroscopy, photoluminescence, and scintillation properties of these compounds were investigated.

Effects of Sn substitution in SrRuO 3 epitaxial films

Epitaxial SrRu 1–x Sn x O 3 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) thin films were deposited on SrTiO 3 (001) substrates by sequential two-target synthesis using pulsed laser deposition to achieve stable phases in this family of quaternary perovskites. The SrRu 1–x Sn x O 3 films exhibit a good crystalline quality, a sharp interface between film and substrate, and an atomically smooth surface. A gradual expansion of the c-axis lattice parameter was observed with Sn doping serving as a means to tune chemical pressure and magnetism. With an increase in Sn doping, the resistivity of the film increased, and the ferromagnetism decreased. These results illustrate use of lattice engineering, e.g., tuning of c-axis lattice parameter with chemical doping, to control electronic and magnetic properties of epitaxial thin films for applications in oxide electronics.

Optimized structure and electronic band gap of monolayer GeSe from quantum Monte Carlo methods

Here, we have used highly accurate quantum Monte Carlo methods to determine the chemical structure and electronic band gaps of monolayer GeSe. Two-dimensional (2D) monolayer GeSe has received a great deal of attention due to its unique thermoelectric, electronic, and optoelectronic properties with a wide range of potential applications. Density functional theory (DFT) methods have usually been applied to obtain optical and structural properties of bulk and 2D GeSe. For the monolayer, DFT typically yields a larger band-gap energy than for bulk GeSe but cannot conclusively determine if the monolayer has a direct or indirect gap. Moreover, the DFT-optimized lattice parameters and atomic coordinates for monolayer GeSe depend strongly on the choice of approximation for the exchange-correlation functional, which makes the ideal structure-and its electronic properties-unclear. In order to obtain accurate lattice parameters and atomic coordinates for the monolayer, we use a surrogate Hessian-based parallel line search within diffusion Monte Carlo to fully optimize the GeSe monolayer structure. The DMC-optimized structure is different from those obtained using DFT, as are calculated band gaps. The potential energy surface has a shallow minimum at the optimal structure. This, combined with the sensitivity of the electronic structure to strain, suggests that the optical properties of monolayer GeSe are highly tunable by strain.

Nanoscale mapping of point defect concentrations with $\mathrm{4D-STEM}$

Vacancies are missing atoms in a crystalline material, and occur both at equilibrium (varying with temperature) and out of equilibrium such as when crystalline materials are damaged with radiation or corrosion. While we know of their importance, particularly regarding diffusive mechanisms, it is not straightforward to experimentally measure their concentration or to visualize them directly. Traditionally, measurements such as positron annihilation spectroscopy and to some degree X-ray diffraction can measure average concentrations, but generally lack the ability to visualize or quantify a heterogenous concentration of vacancies that can occur at the level of individual defects and microstructural features. Here, we present a method to map vacancy concentrations and their distribution using local lattice parameter measurements with a high-resolution electron microscope. Our method utilizes a Au thin film as a model to demonstrate the method via four-dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy (4D-STEM) by correlating the differences between changes in lattice parameter and the volumetric thermal expansion during in situ heating experiments. The vacancy mapping methodology is also applied to non-equilibrium defects accumulated in pure Al via knock-on electron beam irradiation. Our method demonstrates the ability to map point defect concentrations in heterogeneous systems in situ with nanometer spatial resolution. The result is a technique that can provide direct measurements of vacancy concentrations at the level of individual defects in studies of materials in and out of equilibrium.

Low-temperature nanoscale heat transport in a gadolinium iron garnet heterostructure probed by ultrafast x-ray diffraction

Time-resolved x-ray diffraction has been used to measure the low-temperature thermal transport properties of a Pt/Gd3Fe5O12//Gd3Ga5O12 metal/oxide heterostructure relevant to applications in spin caloritronics. A pulsed femtosecond optical signal produces a rapid temperature rise in the Pt layer, followed by heat transport into the Gd3Fe5O12 (GdIG) thin film and the Gd3Ga5O12 (GGG) substrate. The time dependence of x-ray diffraction from the GdIG layer was tracked using an accelerator-based femtosecond x-ray source. The ultrafast diffraction measurements probed the intensity of the GdIG (1 −1 2) x-ray reflection in a grazing-incidence x-ray diffraction geometry. The comparison of the variation of the diffracted x-ray intensity with a model including heat transport and the temperature dependence of the GdIG lattice parameter allows the thermal conductance of the Pt/GdIG and GdIG//GGG interfaces to be determined. Complementary synchrotron x-ray diffraction studies of the low-temperature thermal expansion properties of the GdIG layer provide a precise calibration of the temperature dependence of the GdIG lattice parameter. The interfacial thermal conductance of the Pt/GdIG and GdIG//GGG interfaces determined from the time-resolved diffraction study is of the same order of magnitude as previous reports for metal/oxide and epitaxial dielectric interfaces. The thermal parameters of the Pt/GdIG//GGG heterostructure will aid in the design and implementation of thermal transport devices and nanostructures.

Thermal Processing Conditions for the Synthesis of Near Theoretical Density Li 5 La 3 Ta 2 O 12 Ceramics for Ceramic Dual-Mode Detectors

A family of Li-containing garnet compounds, extensively investigated for Li-ion solid electrolyte applications, show great potential to be developed into transparent ceramic dual-mode scintillators. In particular, Li 5 La 3 Ta 2 O 12 (LLTaO) shows promise as an efficient dual-mode scintillator due to its high Li content, high density, non-hygroscopicity, and high effective-Z. Often the synthesis of LLTaO ceramics involves solid state processing techniques starting with oxide and carbonate powders, calcining, sintering for the removal of residual porosity, and post-processing. This study focuses on two objectives: (1) establishing thermal processing boundary conditions for a flexible alkoxide-based sol-gel method for synthesizing fine-grained powders; and (2), consolidating powders via hot-pressing to form high-density ceramics. In this study, near single-phase ceramics were achieved by hot-pressing sol-gel powders with varying amounts of excess Li. Rietveld refinements were used to analyze X-ray diffraction data and provide a quantitative evaluation of the phases present in the hot pressed ceramics. Some of the diffraction data showed large low angle peak asymmetry, suggesting the presence of two cubic Li 5 La 3 Ta 2 O 12 garnet phases with different lattice parameters. Depending on the synthesis and processing conditions, the refinement revealed ~ 90 wt% concentration of a phase with a ≈ 12.8 Å and ~ 10 wt% concentration of a phase with a ≈ 12.9 Å, indicating a remaining excess of Li in the hot pressed ceramics in the large lattice parameter phase. These synthesis experiments allowed for the determination of a baseline for Li loss during hot-pressing. X-ray excited radioluminescence and photoluminescence excitation and emission spectra were obtained from the hot pressed ceramics. In conclusion, the measured emission spectra featured broad tantalate emission and line emissions likely from a rare-earth impurity.

Stoichiometric Control and Optical Properties of BaTiO 3 Thin Films Grown by Hybrid MBE

BaTiO 3 is a technologically relevant material in the perovskite oxide class with above-room-temperature ferroelectricity and a very large electro-optical coefficient, making it highly suitable for emerging electronic and photonic devices. An easy, robust, straightforward, and scalable growth method is required to synthesize epitaxial BaTiO 3 thin films with sufficient control over the film's stoichiometry to achieve reproducible thin film properties. Here the growth of BaTiO 3 thin films by hybrid molecular beam epitaxy is reported. A self-regulated growth window is identified using complementary information obtained from reflection high energy electron diffraction, the intrinsic film lattice parameter, film surface morphology, and scanning transmission electron microscopy. Subsequent optical characterization of the BaTiO 3 films by spectroscopic ellipsometry revealed refractive index and extinction coefficient values closely resembling those of stoichiometric bulk BaTiO 3 crystals for films grown inside the growth window. Even in the absence of a lattice parameter change of BaTiO 3 thin films, degradation of optical properties is observed, accompanied by the appearance of a wide optical absorption peak in the IR spectrum, attributed to optical transitions involving defect states present. Therefore, the optical properties of BaTiO 3 can be utilized as a much finer and more straightforward probe to determine the stoichiometry level present in BaTiO 3 films.

Local Lattice Deformation of Tellurene Grain Boundaries by Four-Dimensional Electron Microscopy

Two-dimensional (2D) tellurene is a promising competitor for the fabrication of ultrathin optoelectronic devices belonging to a new family of monoelemental 2D materials. Furthermore, the precise fabrication and characterization of tellurene and its lattice defects is of utmost importance to determine device reliability and predict functionality, yet it remains experimentally challenging. The rapid growth of the four-dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy (4D-STEM) technique as well as postprocessing tools now allows for structural analysis with nanometer-scale resolution over a broad range of length scales. Here, we use 4D-STEM to reveal the three-dimensional (3D) atomic structure of the characteristic grain boundary in 2D tellurium formed through a new microwave-enabled chemical self-assembly. Strain and lattice parameter maps permit the reconstruction of the roughness of the grain boundary and suggest that its formation is promoted by a wedge of helical atomic chains along the [0001] crystallographic direction. The observation of wrinkles at the grain boundary is found to be the dominant relaxation mechanism. Insights into the formation mechanism are elucidated by mapping the lattice parameters as the first demonstration of local in-plane and out-of-plane unit cell variation in a nanometer-by-nanometer real-space array.

Derived crystal structure of martensitic materials by solid–solid phase transformation

A mathematical description of crystal structure is proposed consisting of two parts: the underlying translational periodicity and the distinct atomic positions up to the symmetry operations in the unit cell, consistent with the International Tables for Crystallography. By the Cauchy–Born hypothesis, such a description can be integrated with the theory of continuum mechanics to calculate a derived crystal structure produced by solid–solid phase transformation. In addition, the expressions for the orientation relationship between the parent lattice and the derived lattice are generalized. Additionally, the derived structure rationalizes the lattice parameters and the general equivalent atomic positions that assist the indexing process of X-ray diffraction analysis for low-symmetry martensitic materials undergoing phase transformation. The analysis is demonstrated in a CuAlMn shape memory alloy. From its austenite phase (L2 1 face-centered cubic structure), it is identified that the derived martensitic structure has orthorhombic symmetry Pmmn with the derived lattice parameters a d = 4.36491, b d = 5.40865 and c d = 4.2402 Å, by which the complicated X-ray Laue diffraction pattern can be well indexed, and the orientation relationship can be verified.

Lattice-Mismatched van der Waals Epitaxy and Photoluminescence of Two-Dimensional GaxIn1-xSe Alloys on Si(111)

GaxIn1-xSe (GIS) alloys are two-dimensional (2D) layered materials with band gaps and lattice parameters of interest for many energy and electronic applications. They can be fabricated using van der Waals epitaxy, which is an emerging technique that offers unprecedented opportunities for 2D optoelectronic devices and epitaxy processes. This work has demonstrated van der Waals epitaxy of GIS alloys for the first time. Films with x compositions of 0, 0.062, 0.164, 0.680, 0.894, and 1 and tunable lattice constants were grown on Si(111) substrates, and characterized by X-ray diffraction pole figure and transmission electron microscope analysis. In spite of the lattice mismatches (InSe is 4.1% too large and GaSe is 2.8% too small), these alloys grow epitaxially, with Si(111) || GIS(001) and Si[1-10] || GIS[100] orientation. Photoluminescence was used to measure tunable band gaps in the absorber-relevant 1.3-2.0 eV range as a function of x composition and showed GIS did not degrade after capping with Se and prolonged storage. Therefore, GIS alloys exhibit a technologically advantageous combination of tunable band gap and photoluminescence with relaxed lattice parameter and rotational registry with the substrate.

Lattice Refinements for Nonlinear Integrable Optics in IOTA

Nonlinear integrable optics of the type proposed by Danilov and Nagaitsev place strict constraints on the lattice parameters in the matching section outside of the nonlinear insert. In particular, the effects of energy spread in the beam have significant effects on the stability of the system. Typical chromatic compensation using sextupoles has significant perturbative effects on the dynamics but is operationally necessary to suppress fast losses. Fast decoherence of kicked beam measurements limits the available signal for studies. Refinements to the IOTA lattice parameters based on this experience with electron beam operation are presented.

Luminescence and Scintillation in the Niobium Doped Oxyfluoride Rb4Ge5O9F6:Nb

A new niobium-doped inorganic scintillating oxyfluoride, Rb4Ge5O9F6:Nb, was synthesized in single crystal form by high-temperature flux growth. The host structure, Rb4Ge5O9F6, crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pbcn with lattice parameters a = 6.98430(10) Å, b = 11.7265(2) Å, and c = 19.2732(3) Å, consisting of germanium oxyfluoride layers made up of Ge3O9 units connected by GeO3F3 octahedra. In its pure form, Rb4Ge5O9F6 shows neither luminescence nor scintillation but when doped with niobium, Rb4Ge5O9F6:Nb exhibits bright blue luminescence and scintillation. The isostructural doped structure, Rb4Ge5O9F6:Nb, crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pbcn with lattice parameters a = 6.9960(3) Å, b = 11.7464(6) Å, and c = 19.3341(9) Å. X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) measurements suggest that the niobium is located in an octahedral coordination environment. Optical measurements inform us that the niobium dopant acts as the activator. The synthesis, structure, and optical properties are reported, including radioluminescence (RL) measurements under X-ray irradiation.

Synthesis and characterization of Pt(Cu 0.67 Sn 0.33 )

Pt(Cu 0.67 Sn 0.33 ) has recently been found in a natural sample. In order to be able to characterize this new ternary compound, we synthesized it from the elements. Samples were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, thermal relaxation calorimetry, and scanning electron microscopy studies. Density functional theory-based model calculations complemented the experimental studies. Pt(Cu 0.67 Sn 0.33 )was already formed at a relatively low temperature of 773 K. Rietveld refinement of Pt(Cu 0.67 Sn 0.33 ) has been carried out in CuAu-type or L1 0 -type structure, space group P4/mmm, with Pt on 0,0,0 and disordered Cu and Sn on 1/2, 1/2, 1/2 and Z = 1. The lattice parameters are a = 2.823(1) Å, c = 3.64(1) Å, and V = 29.00(4) Å which are in good agreement with values obtained earlier on the natural sample and with the results of DFT calculations. The vibrational entropy for Pt(Cu 0.67 Sn 0.33 ) is $S_{298.15}^{vib}$ = 79.9(7) J mol -1 K -1 . The pressure dependence up to 36(2) GPa of the unit-cell volume and the lattice parameters and unit-cell volume have been obtained by synchrotron based powder diffraction using a diamond anvil cell. A fit of a 3rd-order Birch–Murnaghan equation of state to the Pt(Cu 0.67 Sn 0.33 )) (p,V)-data results in a bulk modulus of B 0 = 215(27) GPa and B' = 5(2).

Structure–Composition Relationships for Mg–Ni and Mg–Fe Olivine

Olivine is a dynamic and important mineral in the crust and mantle with relevance to processes important to climate change technology, such as geologic carbon storage and critical mineral recovery. In this work, we critically evaluated and compiled a new database of olivine diffraction data, lattice parameters, and composition to enable rapid Ni-Mg-Fe olivine composition determination. A compilation of olivine X-ray diffraction data and chemical compositions from both the literature and the International Centre for Diffraction Data (ICDD) powder database was assembled to plot both the forsterite-fayalite and forsterite-liebenbergite solid solution lines. Here we present an expanded dataset to delineate equations and relationships used for quantifying the correlations between olivine lattice parameters and chemical compositions in Mg 2 SiO 4 -Fe 2 SiO 4 (forsterite-fayalite) and Mg 2 SiO 4 -Ni 2 SiO 4 (forsterite-liebenbergite) olivine solid solution series.

Critical differences in 3D atomic structure of individual ligand-protected nanocrystals in solution

Precise three-dimensional (3D) atomic structure determination of individual nanocrystals is a prerequisite for understanding and predicting their physical properties. Nanocrystals from the same synthesis batch display what are often presumed to be small but possibly important differences in size, lattice distortions, and defects, which can only be understood by structural characterization with high spatial 3D resolution. We solved the structures of individual colloidal platinum nanocrystals by developing atomic-resolution 3D liquid-cell electron microscopy to reveal critical intrinsic heterogeneity of ligand-protected platinum nanocrystals in solution, including structural degeneracies, lattice parameter deviations, internal defects, and strain. These differences in structure lead to substantial contributions to free energies, consequential enough that they must be considered in any discussion of fundamental nanocrystal properties or applications.

Structural and electronic properties of rare-earth chromites: A computational and experimental study

Here, in this work, the structural, optical, and electronic properties of rare-earth perovskites of the general formula R⁢ CrO 3 , where R⁢ represents the rare-earth Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, and Tm, have been studied in detail. These compounds were synthesized through a facile citrate route. X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and UV-Visible spectroscopy were utilized to reveal the structural evolutions in R⁢ ⁢CrO 3 . The lattice parameters, Cr 3+ –O 2 –Cr 3+ bond angle, and CrO 6 octahedral distortions were found to strongly depend on the ionic radii of R⁢ . First-principles calculations based on density-functional theory within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) of Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) and strongly constrained and appropriately normed (SCAN) meta-GGA were also employed to calculate the structural and electronic properties of R⁢ ⁢CrO 3 . The ground-state energy, lattice constants, electronic structures, and density of states of R⁢ ⁢CrO 3 were calculated. These provide some insights into the electronic characteristics of the R⁢ ⁢CrO 3 compounds. The calculated values of lattice parameters and band gaps with Hubbard U correction (SCAN+ U ) agree well with values measured experimentally and show more accuracy in predicting the ground-state crystal structure and band structure compared to PBE+ U approximation. The band gap of R⁢ ⁢CrO 3 is found to be independent of the ionic radii of R⁢ from both experiments and calculations.
