Neural-network analysis of Parton Distribution Functions from Ioffe-time pseudodistributions

In this work, we extract two nonsinglet nucleon Parton Distribution Functions from lattice QCD data for reduced Ioffe-time pseudodistributions. We perform such analysis within the NNPDF framework, considering data coming from different lattice ensembles and dis- cussing in detail the treatment of the different source of systematics involved in the fit. We introduce a recipe for taking care of systematics and use it to perform our extraction of light-cone PDFs.

Parton distribution function for topological charge at one loop

We present results for the gg-part of the one-loop corrections to the recently introduced “topological charge” GPD F~(x, q 2 ). In particular, we give expression for its evolution kernel. To enforce strict compliance with the gauge invariance requirements, we have used on-shell states for external gluons, and have obtained identical results both in Feynman and light-cone gauges. No “zero mode” δ(x) terms were found for the twist-4 gluon GPD F~(x, q 2 ).

Polarized gluon pseudodistributions at short distances

We formulate the basic points of the pseudo-PDF approach to the lattice calculation of polarized gluon PDFs. We present the results of our calculations of the one-loop corrections for the bilocal G μα (z)G~ λβ (0) correlator of gluonic fields. Expressions are given for a general situation when all four indices are arbitrary, and also for specific combinations of indices corresponding to three matrix elements that contain the twist-2 invariant amplitude related to the polarized PDF. We study the evolution properties of these matrix elements, and derive matching relations between Euclidean and light-cone Ioffe-time distributions. These relations are necessary for extraction of the polarized gluon distributions from the lattice data.

Three-dimensional imaging of pion using lattice QCD: generalized parton distributions

In this work, we report a lattice calculation of x-dependent valence pion generalized parton distributions (GPDs) at zero skewness with multiple values of the momentum transfer −t. The calculations are based on an N f = 2 + 1 gauge ensemble of highly improved staggered quarks with Wilson-Clover valence fermion. The lattice spacing is 0.04 fm, and the pion valence mass is tuned to be 300 MeV. We determine the Lorentz-invariant amplitudes of the quasi-GPD matrix elements for both symmetric and asymmetric momenta transfers with similar values and show the equivalence of both frames. Then, focusing on the asymmetric frame, we utilize a hybrid scheme to renormalize the quasi-GPD matrix elements obtained from the lattice calculations. After the Fourier transforms, the quasi-GPDs are then matched to the light-cone GPDs within the framework of large momentum effective theory with improved matching, including the next-to-next-to-leading order perturbative corrections, and leading renormalon and renormalization group resummations. We also present the 3-dimensional image of the pion in impact-parameter space through the Fourier transform of the momentum transfer −t.

Soft-collinear gravity beyond the leading power

We construct “soft-collinear gravity”, the effective field theory which describes the interaction of collinear and soft gravitons with matter (and themselves), to all orders in the soft-collinear power expansion. Despite the absence of collinear divergences in gravity at leading power, the construction exhibits remarkable similarities with soft-collinear effective theory of QCD (gauge fields). It reveals an emergent soft background gauge symmetry, which allows for a manifestly gauge-invariant representation of the interactions in terms of a soft covariant derivative, the soft Riemann tensor, and a covariant generalisation of the collinear light-cone gauge metric field. The gauge symmetries control both the unsuppressed collinear field components and the inherent inhomogeneity in λ of the invariant objects to all orders, resulting in a consistent expansion.

Helicity evolution at small x: the single-logarithmic contribution

We calculate single-logarithmic corrections to the small-x flavor-singlet helicity evolution equations derived recently [1–3] in the double-logarithmic approximation. The new single-logarithmic part of the evolution kernel sums up powers of α s ln(1/x), which are an important correction to the dominant powers of α s ln 2 (1/x) summed up by the double-logarithmic kernel from [1–3] at small values of Bjorken x and with α s the strong coupling constant. The single-logarithmic terms arise separately from either the longitudinal or transverse momentum integrals. Consequently, the evolution equations we derive employing the light-cone perturbation theory simultaneously include the small-x evolution kernel and the leading-order polarized DGLAP splitting functions. We further enhance the equations by calculating the running coupling corrections to the kernel.

Asymptotic behavior of meson transition form factors

One of the open issues in evaluations of the contribution from hadronic light-by-light scattering to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon (g - 2)µ concerns the role of heavier scalar, axial-vector, and tensormeson intermediate states. The coupling of axial vectors to virtual photons is suppressed for small virtualities by the Landau–Yang theorem, but otherwise there are few rigorous constraints on the corresponding form factors. In this paper, we first derive the Lorentz decomposition of the two-photon matrix elements into scalar functions following the general recipe by Bardeen, Tung, and Tarrach. Based on this decomposition, we then calculate the asymptotic behavior of the meson transition form factors from a light-cone expansion in analogy to the asymptotic limits for the pseudoscalar transition form factor derived by Brodsky and Lepage. Finally, we compare our results to existing data as well as previous models employed in the literature.

Two-loop radiative jet function for exclusive B-meson and Higgs decays

The rare radiative B -meson decay \( {B}^{-}\to \gamma {\mathrm{\ell}}^{-}\overline{v} \) and the radiative Higgs-boson decay h → γγ mediated by light-quark loops both receive large logarithmic corrections in QCD, which can be resummed using factorization theorems derived in soft-collinear effective theory. In these factorization theorems the same radiative jet function appears, which is a central object in the study of factorization beyond the leading order in scale ratios. We calculate this function at two-loop order both in momentum space and in a dual space, where its renormalization-group evolution takes on a simpler form. We also derive the two-loop anomalous dimension of the jet function and present the exact solution to its evolution equation at two-loop order. Another important outcome of our analysis is the explicit form of the two-loop anomalous dimension of the B -meson light-cone distribution amplitude in momentum space.

Subleading power resummation of rapidity logarithms: the energy-energy correlator in $ \mathcal{N} $ = 4 SYM

We derive and solve renormalization group equations that allow for the resummation of subleading power rapidity logarithms. Our equations involve operator mixing into a new class of operators, which we term the “rapidity identity operators”, that will generically appear at subleading power in problems involving both rapidity and virtuality scales. To illustrate our formalism, we analytically solve these equations to resum the power suppressed logarithms appearing in the back-to-back (double light cone) limit of the Energy-Energy Correlator (EEC) in \( \mathcal{N} \) = 4 super-Yang-Mills. These logarithms can also be extracted to \( \mathcal{O}\left({\alpha}_s^3\right) \) from a recent perturbative calculation, and we find perfect agreement to this order. Instead of the standard Sudakov exponential, our resummed result for the subleading power logarithms is expressed in terms of Dawson’s integral, with an argument related to the cusp anomalous dimension. We call this functional form “Dawson’s Sudakov”. Our formalism is widely applicable for the resummation of subleading power rapidity logarithms in other more phenomenologically relevant observables, such as the EEC in QCD, the p T spectrum for color singlet boson production at hadron colliders, and the resummation of power suppressed logarithms in the Regge limit.

A new Wilson line-based action for gluodynamics

We perform a canonical transformation of fields that brings the Yang-Mills action in the light-cone gauge to a new classical action, which does not involve any triple-gluon vertices. The lowest order vertex is the four-point MHV vertex. Higher point vertices include the MHV and $\overline{\mathrm{MHV}}$ vertices, that reduce to the corresponding amplitudes in the on-shell limit. In general, any n -leg vertex has 2 ≤ m ≤ n - 2 negative helicity legs. The canonical transformation of fields can be compactly expressed in terms of path-ordered exponentials of fields and their functional derivative. We apply the new action to compute several tree-level amplitudes, up to 8-point NNMHV amplitude, and find agreement with the standard methods. The absence of triple-gluon vertices results in fewer diagrams required to compute amplitudes, when compared to the CSW method and, obviously, considerably fewer than in the standard Yang-Mills action.

Lattice QCD calculation of the pion distribution amplitude with domain wall fermions at physical pion mass

We present a direct lattice QCD calculation of the x-dependence of the pion distribution amplitude (DA), which is performed using the quasi-DA in large momentum effective theory on a domain-wall fermion ensemble at physical quark masses and spacing a ≈ 0.084 fm. The bare quais-DA matrix elements are renormalized in the hybrid scheme and matched to $\overline{MS}$ with a subtraction of the leading renormalon in the Wilson-line mass. For the first time, we include threshold resummation in the perturbative matching onto the light-cone DA, which resums the large logarithms in the soft gluon limit at next-to-next-to-leading log. The resummed results show controlled scale-variation uncertainty within the range of momentum fraction x ϵ [0.25, 0.75] at the largest pion momentum P z ≈ 1.85 GeV. In addition, we apply the same analysis to quasi-DAs from a highly-improved-staggered-quark ensemble at physical pion mass and a = 0.076 fm. By comparison we find with 2σ confidence level that the DA obtained from chiral fermions is flatter and lower near x = 0.5.

Perturbative calculations of gravitational form factors at large momentum transfer

We perform a perturbative QCD analysis of the gravitational form factors (GFFs) of nucleon at large momentum transfer. We derive the explicit factorization formula of the GFFs in terms of twist-3 and twist-4 light-cone distribution amplitudes of nucleon. Power behaviors for these GFFs are obtained from the leading order calculations. Numeric results of the quark and gluon contributions to various GFFs are presented with model assumptions for the distribution amplitudes in the literature. We also present the perturbative calculations of the scalar form factor $\langle P$' $|F^2|P \rangle$ for pion and proton at large momentum transfer.

One-Loop effective action approach to quantum MHV theory

It is well known that the MHV action, i.e. the action containing all the maximally helicity violating vertices, is alone not sufficient for loop computations. In order to develop loop contributions systematically and to ensure that there are no missing terms, we propose to formulate the quantum MHV action via one-loop effective action approach. The quadratic field fluctuations in the light cone Yang-Mills theory are explicitly integrated, followed by the classical canonical field transformation. We test the approach by calculating one loop (++++) and (+++) amplitudes, i.e. amplitudes that cannot be calculated from ordinary MHV action. Such an approach can be further used to unambiguously define loop corrections in other theories related to Yang-Mills theory by field transformations.

Small circle expansion for adjoint QCD 2 with periodic boundary conditions

We study 1 + 1-dimensional SU(N) gauge theory coupled to one adjoint multiplet of Majorana fermions on a small spatial circle of circumference L. Using periodic boundary conditions, we derive the effective action for the quantum mechanics of the holonomy and the fermion zero modes in perturbation theory up to order (gL) 3 . When the adjoint fermion mass-squared is tuned to g 2 N/(2π), the effective action is found to be an example of supersymmetric quantum mechanics with a nontrivial superpotential. We separate the states into the ℤN center symmetry sectors (universes) labeled by p = 0, . . . , N – 1 and show that in one of the sectors the supersymmetry is unbroken, while in the others it is broken spontaneously. These results give us new insights into the (1, 1) supersymmetry of adjoint QCD 2 , which has previously been established using light-cone quantization. When the adjoint mass is set to zero, our effective Hamiltonian does not depend on the fermions at all, so that there are 2 N−1 degenerate sectors of the Hilbert space. This construction appears to provide an explicit realization of the extended symmetry of the massless model, where there are 2 2N−2 operators that commute with the Hamiltonian. We also generalize our results to other gauge groups G, for which supersymmetry is found at the adjoint mass-squared g 2 h ∨ /(2π), where h ∨ is the dual Coxeter number of G.

One-loop structure of parton distribution for the gluon condensate and “zero modes”

We present results for one-loop corrections to the recently introduced “gluon condensate” PDF F(x). In particular, we give expression for the gg-part of its evolution kernel. To enforce strict compliance with the gauge invariance requirements, we have used on-shell states for external gluons, and have obtained identical results both in Feynman and light-cone gauges. No “zero mode” δ(x) terms were found for the twist-4 gluon PDF F(x). However a q 2 δ(x) term was found for the ξ = 0 GPD F(x, q 2 ) at nonzero momentum transfer q. Overall, our results do not agree with the original attempt of one-loop calculations of F(x) for gluon states, which sets alarm warning for calculations that use matrix elements with virtual external gluons and for lattice renormalization procedures based on their results.

Entanglement between valence and sea quarks in hadrons of 1+1 dimensional QCD

The conceptual interpretation of valence- and sea-quark separation, which is a key aspect of the parton model and of an intuitive picture of hadron structure, becomes obscured by quantum effects in QCD. This suggests that there may be measures of entanglement between quark degrees of freedom that are present in QCD, but absent in the intuitive picture with a clear valence-sea (VS) separation. In this paper, we define the first rigorous measure of VS entanglement in QCD in an attempt to bring conceptual clarity to this issue, and, potentially, to find a measure of the applicability of the parton model to QCD bound states. This VS entanglement vanishes in the large-N c limit, and it remains low when finite-N c states resemble their large-N c counterparts. We perform a numerical study of VS entanglement in 1 + 1 dimensional discrete light-cone quantized QCD, and in the process develop a method for building the color-singlet basis of 1 + 1d QCD that is manifestly complete and orthogonal by construction. We calculate this VS entanglement entropy for the first time and find that it is relatively low for the first few excited states of both mesons and baryons compared to all other states in the spectrum, with the VS entropy of ground state hadrons providing a minimum. We also see that for ground state mesons the entropy is well described in the 1/N c approximation. These results suggest that low energy hadrons may be the only QCD bound states for which the large-N c expansion, and perhaps the parton model, provide an accurate description. This work also provides the first evidence that the VS entanglement entropy of QCD in 3 + 1d, which would likely serve as an order parameter for the transition between quark and hadron degrees of freedom, may be perturbatively accessible through a large-N c expansion.

Challenges for the statistical gravitational-wave method to measure the Hubble constant

Gravitational waves (GW) can be employed as standard sirens that will soon measure the Hubble constant with sufficient precision to weigh in on the ~5σ Hubble tension. Most GW sources will have no identified electromagnetic counterpart, leading to uncertainty in the redshift of the source, and in turn a degeneracy between host galaxy distance, redshift, and H 0 . In the case where no electromagnetic counterparts are identified, it has been proposed that a statistical canvassing of candidate GW hosts, found in a large galaxy survey for example, can be used to accurately constrain the Hubble constant. We study and simulate this "galaxy voting" method to compute H 0 . Here, we find that the Hubble constant posterior is in general biased relative to the true value even when making optimistic assumptions about the statistical properties of the sample. Using the MICECAT light-cone catalog, we find that the bias in the H0 posteriors depends on the realization of the underlying galaxy sample and the precision of the GW source distance measurement.

Measuring short-range correlations and quasi-elastic cross sections in A(e,e’) at x > 1 and modest Q 2

We present results from the Jefferson Lab E08-014 experiment, investigating short-range correlations (SRC) through measurements of inclusive quasi-elastic scattering from 2 H, 3 He, 4 He, 12 C, 40 Ca, and 48 Ca. The kinematics were selected to isolate scattering from SRCs, yielding a plateau in the A/ 2 H cross-section ratios due to the universal two-body structure of the 2N-SRCs in light and heavy nuclei. We observe approximate plateaus in the A/ 2 H ratios and provide the first extractions of the A/ 2 H ratio for 40 Ca and 48 Ca. We also examine the A/ 3 He ratio, aiming to identify three-nucleon SRCs (3N-SRCs). Following the approach for isolating 2N-SRCs, searching for 3N-SRC dominance involved measuring the A/ 3 He cross section ratio at modest-to-large Q 2 values and looking for a plateau ratios for x ≳ 2.5. This was not observed in the data, and in fact increasing Q 2 values moved the data further away from the predicted plateau. We show here that, when analyzed in terms of the struck nucleon’s light-cone momentum, the data exhibited the expected trend, progressively approaching the predicted 3N-SRC plateau. These observations suggest that future measurements at higher energies may facilitate a definitive isolation and identification of 3N-SRCs.
