Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Trends from the Alternative Fueling Station Locator: Second Quarter 2024

Electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure continues to rapidly change and grow. Using data from the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE's) Alternative Fueling Station Locator, this report provides a snapshot of the state of EV charging infrastructure in the United States in the second calendar quarter of 2024 (Q2 2024) by charging level, network, and location. Additionally, this report measures the current state of charging infrastructure compared to the infrastructure requirement scenario outlined in the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) report, "The 2030 National Charging Network: Estimating U.S. Light-Duty Demand for Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure" (https://www.nrel.gov/docs/fy23osti/85654.pdf). This information is intended to help transportation planners, policymakers, researchers, infrastructure developers, and others understand the rapidly changing landscape of EV charging infrastructure. This is the 18th report in a series. Reports from previous quarters can be found in the Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC) and NREL publication databases, as well as the AFDC Charging Infrastructure Trends page (https://afdc.energy.gov/fuels/electricity_infrastructure_trends.html).

Capacity Investment under Bayesian Information Updates at Reporting Periods: Model and Application

We consider capacity addition decisions by a new product manufacturer faced with uncertain technology alternatives. The manufacturing capacity addition and technology development occurs in parallel, with preliminary results from a technology project's success providing valuable information to the manufacturer in adding capacity. We solve a stochastic dynamic program with Bayesian updates to obtain the manufacturer's expected profit‐maximizing capacity investment decision. Our model and applications are motivated by the Critical Materials Institute (CMI) (funded by the Department of Energy), which manages research projects focused on mitigating critical material constraints, vital to renewable energy technologies such as direct‐drive wind turbines, electric vehicles, and energy‐efficient lighting. We capture three unique aspects of the problem: first, the learning from project progress depends on task‐based stochastic outcomes and a project's percent‐done. Second, the underlying technology's profitability is based on a model of competition. Third, we evaluate the impact of progress across a portfolio of projects based on a manufacturer's capacity addition. We develop a heuristic that produces results that are close to optimal and can thus be used for large problem sizes. The managerial insights from an application of our model to CMI projects include: (i) technology projects that report the percent‐done of a project earlier increase expected manufacturer profit; (ii) careful choice of “safe bets,” that is, technologies with low profitability but a high probability of success, can increase expected manufacturer profit; (iii) a portfolio of projects can increase profits significantly over separate project evaluation; and (iv) dynamic management of project resources can increase overall profit.

ReachNow EV Driving Data From Seattle, WA, Portland, OR, and New York, NY

ReachNow provided Idaho National Laboratory (INL) with a dataset describing approximately 49,000 trips taken by customers and employees in approximately 100 BMW i3 EVs operating in ReachNow's free-floating car-sharing fleets in Seattle, WA, Portland, OR, and New York, NY between May 2016 and February 2017. Data fields include vehicle rental period start and end timestamps, the location where vehicles were parked at the start and end of rental periods, and distance driven during rental periods. A field categorizing the user during each rental period is also included. This field makes it possible to identify when vehicles were rented by customers and when vehicles were driven by fleet management team employees to reposition, charge, or service the vehicles.

The dataset contains EVI-RoadTrip outputs, minute-by-minute load profiles in kW for each station in the simulation based on assumed utilization and network density. The load profiles are aggregated to lower spatial resolution (e.g., state-level, corridor-level) by summation of all station loads associated with the respective geography. This results in a load profile for each scenario that summarizes the corridor's, state's, or county's load profile in minute-level resolution.

Downloadable Dynamometer Database (D3): Public Test Data on Advanced-Technology Vehicles

Access to high-quality, independent vehicle test data is critical to advancing energy-efficient transportation research. The Downloadable Dynamometer Database (D3) is a public repository of dynamometer test data on advanced-technology vehicles, generated at the Advanced Mobility Technology Laboratory (AMTL) at Argonne National Laboratory and hosted by the Transportation and Power Systems Division. The database has been made available to support researchers, students, and professionals engaged in energy-efficient vehicle research, development, and education. A wide range of vehicle categories has been tested (i.e., alternative fuel vehicles, conventional gasoline and diesel vehicles, all-electric vehicles, hybrid electric vehicles, and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles), as well as various drive cycles and test conditions documented in the accompanying D3 user presentation. Stakeholders can select a vehicle type, identify a vehicle of interest, and download the associated test data for use in their own analyses. Data downloaded from D3 must be accompanied by the required attribution: "This data is from the Downloadable Dynamometer Database and was generated at the Advanced Mobility Technology Laboratory (AMTL) at Argonne National Laboratory." These data are critical to vehicle modeling, validation, technology assessment, and educational use.

Dispenser Reliability: Materials R&D. A Hydrogen Fueling Infrastructure Research and Station Technology (H2FIRST) Report

Dispensers are the top cause of maintenance events and down-time at hydrogen fueling stations. In an effort to help characterize and enable improvements in dispenser reliability, an extensive accelerated lifetime testing set-up was designed and built at NREL involving components typically part of dispensing operations at fueling stations. Device Under Test (DUTs) included different components such as normally open valves, normally closed valves, fueling nozzles, breakaways devices and filters. Conditions of testing included pressures, and flow rates similar to light duty fuel cell electric vehicles fueling at -40°C, and -20°C for thousands of cycles in hydrogen. Tested components (failed and non-failed) were disassembled at SNL and polymeric O-rings were carefully retrieved and cataloged for chemical and physical characterization. Data collected was compared to similar O-rings from unexposed or non-tested components for hydrogen effects, and failure modes. Degradation analyses, based on select polymer chemistries common across all component types, their location within components, visual assessment of damage coupled with strong hydrogen effects from chemical characterization, was completed and presented to NREL and DOE. Overall, the failure rate amongst the components was not as high as expected for the test conditions. Among the component types tested, breakaways were the most susceptible to damage under these test conditions, with fueling nozzles a close second. The proper combination of selection of the right polymer and optimum component design was found to make a strong difference in component reliability under severe dispenser operating conditions. Physical degradation of polymers, rather than chemical changes due to low temperature hydrogen exposure, is more prevalent as failure mode for these test conditions. The nature and the extent of the degradation was much less at -20°C as compared to -40°C. The damage and failure rates were higher at lower temperatures than at higher test temperatures. As expected, increasing the number of cycles at the lowest test temperature (-40°C) increased damage. This indicates that cycling at the low temperature of -40°C required by SAE J2601 can reduce component life in fuel dispensing operations
