Topographic effects on reflected acoustic waves from the OSIRIS-REx reentry observed from stratospheric balloons

During long-distance sound propagation in planetary atmospheres, acoustic waves may reflect off the air/surface interface one or more times. For low sound frequencies and flat interfaces, the incident and reflected wave tend to be nearly identical. However, this may not be the case when the downgoing acoustic wave encounters topography. Here, we describe a set of direct and reflected acoustic signals recorded on free-flying balloons during the hypersonic entry of the OSIRIS-REx sample return capsule (SRC). In two of the three cases presented here, an impulsive reflected arrival similar in form to the direct sonic boom of the SRC is observed, followed by a diffuse coda. In contrast, one of the floating stations lacked an impulsive reflection entirely, with only the coda present. We use full waveform modeling to show how reflection in the presence of complex topography can explain coda seen in all three examples as well as the lack of impulsive arrival on the third. Our results indicate that the complex signals often observed in long range acoustic propagation could be due, in part, to interactions with topography during transmission.

A Critical Review on the History of Fabricating Monolithic U-Mo Fuel Plates

Fabrication of uranium-molybdenum alloy fuels has been occurring since the early 2000s in support of the development of a high-uranium-density low-enrichment fuel for use in high-performance research and test reactors which operate at relatively low temperatures. The primary fuel form—a thin foil of uranium, alloyed with 10wt% molybdenum, which is coated in a layer of zirconium and then encapsulated with aluminum 6061 as a cladding material—was developed over a number of years.

FAST Discovery of a Fast Neutral Hydrogen Outflow

Abstract In this letter, we report the discovery of a fast neutral hydrogen outflow in SDSS J145239.38+062738.0, a merging radio galaxy containing an optical type I active galactic nucleus (AGN). This discovery was made through observations conducted by the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) using redshifted 21 cm absorption. The outflow exhibits a blueshifted velocity likely up to ∼−1000 km s −1 with respect to the systemic velocity of the host galaxy with an absorption strength of ∼−0.6 mJy beam −1 corresponding to an optical depth of 0.002 atv= −500 km s −1 . The mass outflow rate ranges between 2.8 × 10 −2 and 3.6M ⊙ yr −1 , implying an energy outflow rate ranging between 4.2 × 10 39 and 9.7 × 10 40 erg s −1 , assuming 100 K s< 1000 K. Plausible drivers of the outflow include the starbursts, AGN radiation, and radio jet, the last of which is considered the most likely culprit according to the kinematics. By analyzing the properties of the outflow, AGN, and jet, we find that if the Hioutflow is driven by the AGN radiation, the AGN radiation does not seem powerful enough to provide negative feedback, whereas the radio jet shows the potential to provide negative feedback. Our observations contribute another example of a fast outflow detected in neutral hydrogen and demonstrate the capability of FAST in detecting such outflows.

Toyota Highlander FCHV (CRADA CRD-12-00469 Final Report)

This project relates to the loan of four Toyota Mirai FCEV-adv vehicles to NLR to provide a load (vehicles to fill with hydrogen) to our fueling station research facility to study hydrogen fueling infrastructure performance using 700 bar precooled hydrogen at ESIF’s Hydrogen Infrastructure Testing and Research Facility (HITRF) facility.

Nuclear Security Risks for HALEU Fuels

There is growing interest in high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU) for use in advanced nuclear reactors as a high-energy fuel source. The primary objectives of this report are to identify the security risks that directly result from HALEU and to identify the gaps and challenges it presents from a theft and sabotage perspective. This study focuses on HALEU security risks for the front end of the fuel cycle and includes a review of the supply chain, fuel fabrication, and transport for terrestrial reactors.

Photon-Counting Interferometry to Detect Geontropic Space-Time Fluctuations with GQuEST

The gravity from the quantum entanglement of space-time (GQuEST) experiment uses tabletop-scale Michelson laser interferometers to probe for fluctuations in space-time. We present a practicable interferometer design featuring a novel photon-counting readout method that provides unprecedented sensitivity, as it is not subject to the interferometric standard quantum limit. We evaluate the potential of this design to measure space-time fluctuations motivated by recent “geontropic” quantum gravity models. The accelerated accrual of Fisher information offered by the photon-counting readout enables GQuEST to detect the predicted quantum gravity phenomena within measurement times at least 100 times shorter than equivalent conventional interferometers. The GQuEST design, thus, enables a fast and sensitive search for signatures of quantum gravity in a laboratory-scale experiment.

Salt to Metal to Salt Heat Transfer in Narrow Fuel Pins (Final CRADA Report)

This work focused on improving the understanding and modeling of conjugate heat transfer in the Stable Salt Reactor (SSR), particularly the transfer of heat from molten fuel salt inside narrow fuel pins, through the metal cladding and into the surrounding coolant salt.
