Molecular Weight Dependence of Block Copolymer Micelle Fragmentation Kinetics

The effect of molecular weight (M) on the fragmentation kinetics of micelles formed by 1,2-polybutadiene-block-poly(ethylene oxide) (PB-PEO) copolymers was studied in the ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide. A series of six samples, with total M ranging from 10 4 to 10 5 g mol –1 and nearly constant composition (f PEO ≈ 0.4), were examined; all six formed spherical micelles with PEO coronas. Nonequilibrium PB-PEO micelles were prepared by direct dissolution, a process that systematically produces nanoparticles with mean aggregation numbers more than twice the equilibrium values. When subjected to high temperature annealing (170 °C), the average micelle radius was found to decrease substantially, as determined by temperature-jump dynamic light scattering (T-jump DLS) and time-resolved small-angle X-ray scattering (TR-SAXS). Furthermore, the characteristic fragmentation times (τ) were found to increase strongly with increasing degree of polymerization N, as τ ~ N 1.8 . This result compares favorably with the prediction of a previously untested model.

Search for decays of the Higgs boson into scalar particles decaying into four or six 𝑏 quarks using 𝑝⁢𝑝 collisions at $\sqrt{𝑠}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for exotic decays of the Higgs boson 𝐻 into new scalar or pseudoscalar particles that subsequently decay into 𝑏-quarks is presented. The search considers 𝑍⁢𝐻 production with several decay scenarios for the Higgs boson; first to a pair of identical scalars, 𝐻 → 2⁢𝑎 → 4⁢𝑏, second to a pair of scalars with different masses (𝑚 𝑎⁢1 < 𝑚 𝑎⁢2 ), either directly, 𝐻 → 𝑎 1 ⁢𝑎 2 → 4⁢𝑏, or via a longer decay chain, 𝐻 → 𝑎 1 ⁢𝑎 2 → 3⁢𝑎 1 → 6⁢𝑏. The analysis uses proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{𝑠}$ = 13 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb −1 . No significant excess above the Standard Model prediction is observed. The search sets upper limits at 95% confidence level on the ratio of the Higgs boson production cross section to the SM prediction times the branching ratio of Higgs bosons decaying into 4⁢𝑏 or 6⁢𝑏, between 4% and 25% for 𝜎⁡(𝑍⁢𝐻)/𝜎 SM ⁡(𝑍⁢𝐻) × ℬ⁡(𝐻→ 2⁢𝑎→ 4⁢𝑏), between 24% and 38% for 𝜎⁡(𝑍⁢𝐻)/𝜎 SM ⁡(𝑍⁢𝐻) × ℬ⁡(𝐻 → 𝑎 1 ⁢𝑎 2 → 4⁢𝑏), and between 10% and 20% for 𝜎⁡(𝑍⁢𝐻)/𝜎 SM ⁡(𝑍⁢𝐻) × ℬ⁡(𝐻→𝑎 1⁢ 𝑎 2 → 3⁢𝑎 1 → 6⁢𝑏), depending on the masses of the scalar particles.

Molecular homing and retention of muscle membrane stabilizing copolymers by non-invasive optical imaging in vivo

First-in-class membrane stabilizer Poloxamer 188 (P188) has been shown to confer membrane protection in an extensive range of clinical conditions; however, elements of the systemic distribution and localization of P188 at the organ, tissue, and muscle fiber levels in vivo have not yet been elucidated. Here we used non-invasive fluorescence imaging to directly visualize and track the distribution and localization of P188 in vivo. The results demonstrated that the Alx647 probe did not alter the fundamental properties of P188 to protect biological membranes. Distribution kinetics in mdx mice demonstrated that Alx647 did not interface with muscle membranes and had fast clearance kinetics. In contrast, the distribution kinetics for P188-Alx647 was significantly slower, indicating a dramatic depot and retention effect of P188. Results further demonstrated the significant retention of P188-Alx647 in the skeletal muscle of mdx mice, showing a significant genotype effect with a higher fluorescence signal in the mdx muscles over BL10 mice. High-resolution optical imaging provided direct evidence of P188 surrounding the sarcolemma of skeletal and cardiac muscle cells. Taken together, these findings provide direct evidence of muscle-disease-dependent molecular homing and retention of synthetic copolymers in striated muscles thereby facilitating advanced studies of copolymer-membrane association in health and disease.

Influence of Added Salt on Chain Conformations in Poly(ethylene oxide) Melts: SANS Analysis with Complications

Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based electrolytes have gained increasing attention in both the rechargeable battery industry and fundamental research, but any influence of the ions on the polymer conformation is not fully understood. Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) is a powerful means to determine single-polymer chain conformations. We conducted SANS experiments on 50:50 blends of perdeuterated PEO (dPEO) and hydrogenous PEO (hPEO) of two different molecular weights (20 and 40 kDa) doped with two different salts (LiTFSI and LiClO 4 ) at various concentrations. An additional measurement with LiI is also reported. The scattering profiles of salt-doped dPEO/hPEO blends were measured, and the incoherent scattering from dPEO and hPEO doped with salt was measured separately. A strong low q upturn was observed in some of the blends and in the pure dPEO homopolymers. The statistical segment lengths of PEO–salt mixtures were derived using a Kratky analysis. The segment length decreases modestly with increasing amounts of LiTFSI but apparently first increases then decreases with added LiClO 4 . At the highest salt concentration examined (r = [Li+]/[EO] = 0.125), a roughly 10% decrease in the statistical segment length was observed in both LiTFSI and LiClO 4 -doped PEOs, for both molecular weights. This work confirms that added salt causes a contraction of the PEO chain dimensions, but the effect appears slightly weaker than reported recently. Certain difficulties in data analysis are also discussed, including the unexplained low q scattering even in pure deuterated polymers, uncertainties in background subtraction, and inappropriate application of the Debye function.

Grain Growth and Coarsening Dynamics in a Compositionally Asymmetric Block Copolymer Revealed by X-ray Photon Correlation Spectroscopy

The dynamics of nanostructured soft materials crucially impact their associated macroscopic material properties, yet they are often difficult to measure due to spatiotemporal limitations of conventional instrumentation. Herein, we use X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) to directly observe particle-scale dynamics during grain growth and coarsening in a BCC- forming diblock polymer melt, with specific attention to the distribution of structural relaxation times associated with the interplanar (110) distance. Following sample quenching from the disordered state, these dynamical phenomena surprisingly exhibit little dependence on time and thermal quench depth. We posit that these relaxations stem from collective particle motions during grain rotation. We also observe unusual internally-referenced heterodyne correlations, which enable measurements of speed distributions within the sample. In this work, these speeds are significantly slower and appear at much longer annealing times than those previously reported during grain nucleation and growth in microphase separated block polymer melts. Drawing on analogies between polycrystalline hard and soft materials, we ascribe these speed distributions to misorientation-dependent grain boundary migration during ordered domain coarsening and anomalously fast, cooperative string-like particle motion along the grain boundaries. Thus, these coherent X-ray measurements provide new opportunities to interrogate grain boundary structure and dynamics in polycrystalline soft materials.

Nondestructive Photo-Cross-Linking of Microphase-Separated Diblock Polymers through Coumarin Dimerization

The effect of long-wavelength ultraviolet photocrosslinking on microphase-separated coumarin-containing block polymers was studied by photo-rheometry and small-angle X-ray scattering. This model system consisted of three photocrosslinkable diblock polymers of poly(methoxyethyl acrylate)-b-poly(hexyl methacrylate-co-coumarin methacrylate) with different volume fractions of the crosslinkable coumarin-containing block, which microphase separated into lamellar and cylindrical morphologies. All polymers stiffened upon exposure to 365 nm light, with much greater relative increases in moduli recorded for lamellae-forming polymers (ca. 3200% increase) compared to the cylinder-forming polymer (ca. 550% increase). Disordering transitions that were evident in uncrosslinked samples were no longer observed after crosslinking in the ordered state, and domain sizes were found to remain stable to heating. The photocrosslinking reaction only proceeded under active irradiation, indicating a high degree of spatiotemporal control over curing in this system. Finally, at constant concentration of couamarin within the crosslinkable block, the cure rate was largely independent of polymer composition, suggesting a constant local concentration of coumarin moieties within the segregated crosslinkable domains. Lastly, these findings establish a set of specific structure-property relationships governing the phase-selective photocrosslinking of diblock polymers that can guide the design of robust nanostructured materials.
