Terahertz quantum-cascade patch-antenna VECSEL with low power dissipation

We report a terahertz quantum-cascade vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting laser (QC-VECSEL) based upon a metasurface consisting of an array of gain-loaded resonant patch antennas. Compared with the typical ridge-based metasurfaces previously used for QC-VECSELs, the patch antenna surface can be designed with a much sparser fill factor of gain material, which allows for reduced heat dissipation and improved thermal performance. Here, it also exhibits larger amplification thanks to enhanced interaction between the incident radiation and the QC-gain material. We demonstrate devices that produce several milliwatts of continuous-wave power in a single mode at ~4.6 THz and dissipate less than 1 W of pump power. Use of different output couplers demonstrates the ability to optimize device performance for either high power or high operating temperature. Maximum demonstrated power is 6.7 mW at 4 K (0.67% wall-plug efficiency, WPE) and 0.8 mW at 77 K (0.06% WPE). Directive output beams are measured throughout with divergence angles of ~5°.

A Low-Power 1 Gb/s Line Driver with Configurable Pre-Emphasis for Lossy Transmission Lines

A line driver with configurable pre-emphasis is implemented in a 65 nm CMOS process. The driver utilizes a three-tap feed-forward equalization (FFE) architecture. The relative delays between the taps are selectable in increments of 1/16th of the unit interval (UI) via an 8-stage delay-locked loop (DLL) and digital interpolator. It is also possible to control the output amplitude and source impedance for each tap via a programmable array of eight source-series terminated (SST) drivers. The entire design consumes 9 mW from a 1.2 V supply at 1 Gb/s.

Signatures of vacuum birefringence in low-power flying focus pulses

Vacuum birefringence produces a differential phase between orthogonally polarized components of a weak electromagnetic probe in the presence of a strong electromagnetic field. Despite representing a hallmark prediction of quantum electrodynamics, vacuum birefringence remains untested in pure light configurations due to the extremely large electromagnetic fields required for a detectable phase difference. Here, we exploit the programmable focal velocity and extended focal range of a flying focus laser pulse to substantially lower the laser power required for detection of vacuum birefringence. In the proposed scheme, a linearly polarized x-ray probe pulse counterpropagates with respect to a flying focus pulse, whose focus moves at the speed of light in the same direction as the x-ray probe. The peak intensity of the flying focus pulse overlaps the probe over millimeter-scale distances and induces a polarization ellipticity on the order of 10 − 10 , which lies within the detection sensitivity of existing x-ray polarimeters. Low-Power Characterization and Integration of Carbon Black Resistive Ink for Aerosol Jet-Printed RF Components

Aerosol jet printing (AJP) is gaining attention in additive manufacturing research, especially in the discipline of microwave engineering. Currently, no reliable AJP method exists to fabricate resistors that are both electrically small and with a resistance compatible with waveguide impedances for use in microwave components. In this work, the commercially available Metalon JR-038 is characterized and used to fabricate a resistor that is 100 μ m long by 250 μ m wide for the first time to the best of our knowledge. Furthermore, this resistor was then used to fabricate a Ka-band Wilkinson power divider using only the AJP process.

Low Power Hardware-In-The-Loop Neuromorphic Training Accelerator

The training process for spiking neural networks can be very computationally intensive. Approaches such as evolutionary algorithms may require evaluating thousands or millions of candidate solutions. In this work, we propose using neuromorphic cores implemented on a Xilinx Zynq system on chip to accelerate and improve the energy efficiency of the evaluation step of an evolutionary training approach. We demonstrate this can significantly reduce the required energy to evolve a network with some cases showing greater than 10 times improvement as compared to a CPU-only system.

Low-Power Deep Learning Inference using the SpiNNaker Neuromorphic Platform

n this presentation we will discuss recent results on using the SpiNNaker neuromorphic platform (48-chip model) for deep learning neural network inference. We use the Sandia Labs developed Whet stone spiking deep learning library to train deep multi-layer perceptrons and convolutional neural networks suitable for the spiking substrate on the neural hardware architecture. By using the massively parallel nature of SpiNNaker, we are able to achieve, under certain network topologies, substantial network tiling and consequentially impressive inference throughput. Such high-throughput systems may have eventual application in remote sensing applications where large images need to be chipped, scanned, and processed quickly. Additionally, we explore complex topologies that push the limits of the SpiNNaker routing hardware and investigate how that impacts mapping software-implemented networks to on-hardware instantiations.

All Optical Neural Networks for Low Power Edge Computing

We developed a simplistic physics-based model of an all-optical neural network that mimics the encoder part of an autoencoder neural network for image compression. Our approach relies on the generation of a MATLAB-based model for both data compression and decompression and utilizes MATLAB's built-in autoencoder networks in combination with simple propagation of optical fields between layers constituting phase elements via Fourier transform. We optimize the phase elements using the particle swarm optimization technique and using our model, we demonstrate a compression ratio of 25% for 2828-pixel input images containing numeric digits from 0 to 9.

Proton Tunable Analog Transistor for Low Power Computing

This project was broadly motivated by the need for new hardware that can process information such as images and sounds right at the point of where the information is sensed (e.g. edge computing). The project was further motivated by recent discoveries by group demonstrating that while certain organic polymer blends can be used to fabricate elements of such hardware, the need to mix ionic and electronic conducting phases imposed limits on performance, dimensional scalability and the degree of fundamental understanding of how such devices operated. As an alternative to blended polymers containing distinct ionic and electronic conducting phases, in this LDRD project we have discovered that a family of mixed valence coordination compounds called Prussian blue analogue (PBAs), with an open framework structure and ability to conduct both ionic and electronic charge, can be used for inkjet-printed flexible artificial synapses that reversibly switch conductance by more than four orders of magnitude based on electrochemically tunable oxidation state. Retention of programmed states is improved by nearly two orders of magnitude compared to the extensively studied organic polymers, thus enabling in-memory compute and avoiding energy costly off-chip access during training. We demonstrate dopamine detection using PBA synapses and biocompatibility with living neurons, evoking prospective application for brain - computer interfacing. By application of electron transfer theory to in-situ spectroscopic probing of intervalence charge transfer, we elucidate a switching mechanism whereby the degree of mixed valency between N-coordinated Ru sites controls the carrier concentration and mobility, as supported by density functional theory (DFT) .

Low Power, Radiation Resilient Synchronous Edge Processing for Remote Monitoring

Next-generation space remote sensing systems may be equipped with imaging arrays that sense data at a rate that outstrips the processing capability of any computing hardware that can operate within a satellite’s power budget. This project developed novel convolutional and recurrent neural networks to detect and estimate point-like events amid clutter, and investigated their efficient and accurate implementation on analog in-memory computing systems that are 10-1000× more energy-efficient than digital processors. This project leveraged two memory devices at different levels of technological maturity: a large-scale analog computing prototype using commercial SONOS charge-trap memory, and electrochemical memory (ECRAM) with intrinsic radiation hardness. We experimentally demonstrated end-to-end analog processing of our neural networks on SONOS and characterized the radiation response of both SONOS and ECRAM. We advanced the state-of-the-art in ECRAM precision and reliability, and developed co-design methods to enable accurate long-term operation of SONOS analog accelerators in space radiation environments.
