Long-range three-dimensional magnetic structures of the spin S =1 hexamer cluster fedotovite-like A 2 Cu 3 O ( SO 4 ) 3 ( A 2 = K 2 , NaK, Na 2 ): A neutron diffraction study

The crystal and magnetic structures of the spin S = 1 hexamer cluster fedotovite-like A 2 Cu 3 O(SO 4 ) 3 (A 2 = K 2 , NaK, Na 2 ) were studied by neutron powder diffraction at temperatures 1.6–290 K. The crystal structures in all compounds are well refined in the monoclinic space group C2/c. The basic magnetic units of the compounds are copper hexamers, which are coupled by weak superexchange interactions giving rise to three-dimensional long-range magnetic order below 3.0 < T N < 4.7 K. We have found that for A 2 = K 2 and NaK the propagation vector of the magnetic structure is k = [0,0,0], and the coupling of the Cu hexamers is ferromagnetic (FM) along the ab diagonal and antiferromagnetic along the bc diagonal. In contrast, for A = Na the propagation vector is k = [0,1,0], and the Cu hexamers are coupled antiferromagnetically (AFM) along the ab diagonal. Further, the hexamers are formed by three Cu pairs arranged along the b axis. The calculated spin expectation values $\langle s \rangle$ for the simplest symmetric spin Hamiltonian (obtained from inelastic neutron spectroscopy) of the isolated hexamers in the mean field amounted to $\langle s \rangle$ = 3/8 for the side spins Cu1 and Cu2 and $\langle s \rangle$ = 1/4 for Cu3 in the middle. The Cu spins are FM coupled in pairs and AFM between neighboring pairs. The experimental magnetic moments of the Cu 2+ ions turn out to be not completely collinear due to spin frustrations within the weak interhexamer interactions. The sizes of magnetic moments of Cu in the hexamers determined from the diffraction data are in fair agreement with the calculated values.

Topological superconductivity induced by a triple- q magnetic structure

Here we demonstrate that the recently discovered triple- q (3 q ) magnetic structure, when embedded in a magnet-superconductor hybrid (MSH) system, gives rise to the emergence of topological superconductivity. We investigate the structure of chiral Majorana edge modes at domain walls, and show that they can be distinguished from trivial in-gap modes through the spatial distribution of the induced supercurrents. Finally, we show that topological superconductivity in 3 q MSH systems is a robust phenomenon that does not depend on the relative alignment of the magnetic and superconducting layers, or on the presence of electronic degrees of freedom in the magnetic layer.

Magnetic Structure and Spin Fluctuation in Colossal Magnetoresistance Ferrimagnet Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6

The ferrimagnetic insulator Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6 , which features a Curie temperature T c at 78 K and a delicate yet consequential magnetic frustration, exhibits colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) when the magnetic field is applied along the magnetic hard axis, surprisingly inconsistent with existing precedents [Y. Ni, H. Zhao, Y. Zhang, B. Hu, I. Kimchi, and G. Cao, Phys. Rev. B 103, L161105 (2021)]. This discovery motivates a thorough single-crystal neutron diffraction study in order to gain insights into the magnetic structure and its hidden correlation with the new type of CMR. Here we report a noncollinear magnetic structure below the T c where the moments lie predominantly within the basal plane but tilt toward the c axis by ≈10° at ambient conditions. A substantial magnetic diffuse scattering decays slowly and persists well above the T c . The evolution of the spin correlation lengths agrees well with the electrical resistivity, underscoring the role of spin fluctuation contributing to the magnetoresistivity near the transition. Further, application of magnetic field along the c axis renders a swift occurrence of CMR but only a slow tilting of the magnetic moments toward the c axis. The unparalleled changes indicate a nonconsequential role of magnetic polarization.

Evidence for the interaction of large scale magnetic structures in solar flares

By modeling the observed vertical magnetic field of an active region AR 2372 by the potential field of an ensemble of magnetic dipoles, the likely location of the separatrices, surfaces that separates cells of different field line connectivities, and of the separator which is the intersection of the separatrices, is derived. Four of the five off-band H-alpha kernels of a flare that occurred less than 20 minutes before obtaining the magnetogram are shown to have taken place near or at the separatrices. These H-alpha kernels are connected by field lines that pass near the separator. This indicates that the flare may have resulted from the interaction in the separator region of large scale magnetic structures.

Magnetic structure and Ising-like antiferromagnetism in the bilayer triangular lattice compound NdZnPO

Here, the complex interplay of spin frustration and quantum fluctuations in low-dimensional quantum materials leads to a variety of intriguing phenomena. This research focuses on a detailed analysis of the magnetic behavior exhibited by NdZnPO, a bilayer spin-1/2 triangular lattice antiferromagnet. The investigation employs magnetization, specific heat, and powder neutron scattering measurements. At zero field, a long-range magnetic order is observed at T N = 1.64 K. Powder neutron diffraction experiments show the Ising-like magnetic moments along the c-axis, revealing a stripe like magnetic structure with magnetic propagation vector (1/2, 0, 1/2). Application of a magnetic field along the c-axis suppresses the antiferromagnetic order, leading to a fully polarized ferromagnetic state above B c = 4.5 T. This transition is accompanied by notable enhancements in the nuclear Schottky contribution. Moreover, the absence of spin frustration and expected field-induced plateau-like phases are remarkable observations. Detailed calculations of magnetic dipolar interactions revealed complex couplings reminiscent of a honeycomb lattice, suggesting the potential emergence of Kitaev-like physics within this system. This comprehensive study of the magnetic properties of NdZnPO highlights unresolved intricacies, underscoring the imperative for further exploration to unveil the underlying governing mechanisms.

A solid-state extrusion pathway extensible to upcycling aluminum scrap and end-of-life permanent magnets into ductile Al-6061/SmCo 5 structural magnetic composites

Permanent magnets offer strong potential for multifunctional structural components, but their inherent brittleness limits direct integration. Here, SolidStir® Extrusion (SSE) is used to embed SmCo5 powder into AA6061 in the solid state, and the resulting microstructure, interfacial chemistry, mechanical properties, and magnetic response are systematically characterized. SSE fragments the initial SmCo 5 powder into predominantly fine particles dispersed within an ultrafine Al matrix, with a volume fraction of ∼ 4–6 % in this proof-of-concept study. Interfacial reactions form a continuous Al–Co reaction layer, with local atomic-resolution indexing consistent with Al 13 Co 4 , together with Sm–Si-rich reaction products, while the matrix contains Sm–Co–Si-rich precipitates and Mg 2 Si, producing features from nanometers to micrometers. Compared with an Al extrudate, this architecture increases yield strength by ∼ 42 % and tensile strength by ∼ 31 %, while preserving uniform elongation, and it sustains work hardening in compression from 150 to 400 °C. The composite retained hard-magnetic behavior, with axial magnetization of 12.7 A·m 2 kg −1 at 6 T and intrinsic coercivity of 9.6 kOe. These findings demonstrate that SSE can produce Al-based load-bearing magnetic composites while preserving useful SmCo5 functionality.

Magnetic structure and exchange interactions in the Heisenberg pyrochlore antiferromagnet Gd 2 Pt 2 O 7

In this report the Heisenberg pyrochlore antiferromagnet Gd 2 Pt 2 O 7 is one of a series of gadolinium pyrochlore compounds with a variety of B-site cations. Despite the expected simplicity of a spin-only Gd 3+ Heisenberg interaction model, the gadolinium pyrochlore series exhibits various complex magnetic ground states at low temperature. Gd 2 Pt 2 O 7 displays the highest temperature magnetic order of the series with $T_N$=1.6 K, which has been attributed to enhanced superexchange pathways facilitated by empty $5d$ $e_g$ Pt orbitals. In this study, we use various neutron scattering techniques on an isotopically enriched polycrystalline 160 Gd 2 Pt 2 O 7 sample to examine the magnetic structure and spin-wave excitation spectrum below $T_N$ in order to extract the dominant exchange interactions. We find that the ground-state magnetic structure is the Palmer-Chalker state previously seen in Gd 2 Sn 2 O 7 with an associated gapped excitation spectrum consistent with enhanced exchange interactions between further near-neighbor Gd 3+ ions. We confirm this exchange model with analysis of the magnetic diffuse scattering in the paramagnetic regime using polarized neutrons.

Structural, magnetic, and magnetocaloric properties of (Nd 0.7 Ce 0.3 )YFe 17

Structural, magnetic, and magnetocaloric properties of iron-deficient (Nd 1-x Ce x )YFe 17 alloys in the rhombohedral Th 2 Zn 17 –type crystal structure prepared by arc-melting and vacuum annealing have been investigated. Among the investigated alloys, (Nd 0.7 Ce 0.3 )YFe 17 shows the highest values of magnetic entropy change and relative cooling power, namely 5.45 J kg -1 K -1 and 504 J kg -1 for a magnetic field change of 5 T. The Curie temperature and saturation magnetization of the (Nd 0.7 Ce 0.3 )YFe 17 alloy are 301 K and 162 emu/g, respectively. The absence of thermal and magnetic hysteresis with relatively high cooling capacity near room temperature suggests that Fe-deficient (Nd 0.7 Ce 0.3 )YFe 17 carries significant potential for room-temperature magnetic refrigeration.

Solitary Magnetic Structures Developed From Gyro-Resonance With Solar Wind Ions at Mars and Earth

We investigate solitary magnetic structures in the foreshock of Mars and Earth. The structures exhibit pulse-like magnetic field and density enhancements along with plasma heating and local solar wind (SW) ion reflection. The structures at Mars resemble the foreshock structures developed from ultra-low-frequency electromagnetic waves gyro-resonant with SW ions at Earth, and propagate toward the magnetosphere. We perform fully kinetic simulations to reproduce the solitary structures and the nonlinear evolution of ion distribution functions, illustrating their resonance with SW ions. The structures present self-induced foreshock turbulence that can have space weather effects. Our results advance the fundamental understanding of how SW interacts with planetary magnetospheres, and have potential impact on the current picture of planet-origin ion escape.

Magnetic structure evolution of LiFe 1- x Co x PO 4 olivines upon delithiation

We present a comprehensive study of the nuclear and magnetic structures of the mixed olivine solid solution series LiFe 1-x Co x PO 4 as well as their delithiated counterparts, for metal concentrations x = 0.2 - 0.6. Through neutron powder diffraction studies, we find that the LiFe 1-x Co x PO 4 series orders in the magnetic space group Pnma', consistent with their Li(Fe/Co)PO 4 parent structures. After chemical delithiation using peracetic acid, however, the removal of over 30% of the lithium from the lattice results in a transition from an A y -type to an A x -type antiferromagnetic structure. The magnetic space group consistent with A x antiferromagnetism was found to be Pn'm'a'. Interestingly, magnetic susceptibility measurements of both series reveal that delithiation increases the magnetic transition temperature, T N , from 50 K to 115 K. We find through analysis of the diffraction data that the unit cell parameters change linearly as a function of x; consequently, the exchange pathways between the Fe/Co magnetic cations are affected by the delithiation. Here, we discuss how exchange pathways, metal oxidation states, and d-orbital occupation all contribute to the observed magnetic symmetries and trends in T N in both series.

Li 4 Ru 2 OCl 10 ·10H 2 O: crystal structure, magnetic properties and bonding interactions in ruthenium-oxo complexes

The results of the structural determination, magnetic characterization, and theoretical calculations of a new ruthenium-oxo complex, Li 4 [Ru 2 OCl 10 ]·10H 2 O, are presented. Single crystals were grown using solvent methods and the crystal structure was characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Li 4 [Ru 2 OCl 10 ]·10H 2 O crystallizes into a low-symmetry triclinic structure ($P\bar1$) due to the much smaller Li + cation compared to K + cation in the tetragonal complex K 4 [Ru 2 OCl 10 ]·H 2 O. The X-ray photoelectron spectra confirm only the single valent Ru 4+ in Li 4 [Ru 2 OCl 10 ]·10H 2 O even though two distinct Ru sites exist in the crystal structure. Magnetic measurements reveal the diamagnetic property of Li 4 [Ru 2 OCl 10 ]·10H 2 O with unpaired electrons existing on Ru 4+ . Furthermore, the molecular orbital analysis matches well with the observed UV and magnetic measurements.

Crystal growth and magnetic structure of ternary silicide Eu Pd 3 Si 2

The hexagonal CaCu 5 –type structure (P6/mmm) is the prototype for more than 100 ternary borides, gallides, and silicides, with general stoichiometry of RTM 3 X 2 (R=lanthanide/alkaline earth; TM=transition metal; X=B, Ga, Si, Ge). Here we report the synthesis, crystal structure, and bulk magnetic properties of polycrystalline and single crystal samples of EuPd 3 Si 2 and its nonmagnetic analog SrPd 3 Si 2 . Both compounds crystallize in the orthorhombic space group symmetry Imma (no. 74, Z = 2, oI12) displaying pseudohexagonal symmetry. Ferromagnetic (FM) order of Eu 2+ at T C1 =78K and a spin-reorientation transition at T C2 =5K appear as distinctive features in bulk magnetization, specific heat, and resistivity/resistance measurements. Neutron powder diffraction measurements on EuPd 3 Si 2 confirm FM order of the Eu 2+ spins below T C1 , with the spins aligned along the a axis below T C2 . Electronic band structure calculations corroborate the crystal structure and the FM state for EuPd 3 Si 2 , with a Pd d–band polarization in the same direction as the Eu 4f polarization, enhancing the observed spin moment.

Modeling solar magnetic structures

Some ideas in the theoretical study of force-free magnetic fields and magnetostatic fields, which are relevant to the effort of using magnetograph data as inputs to model the quasi-static, large-scale magnetic structures in the solar atmosphere are discussed. Basic physical principles will be emphasized. An attempt will be made to assess what we may learn, physically, from the models based on these ideas. There is prospect for learning useful physics and this ought to be an incentive for intensifying the efforts to improve vector magnetograph technology and to solve the basic radiative-transfer problems encountered in the interpretation of magnetograph raw data.

Canted Eu magnetic structure in EuMnSb 2

Magnetic ordering breaks the time-reversal symmetry, greatly impacting material topological properties. Here, we report the investigation of the magnetic properties of the layered EuMnSb 2 , which has two sets of magnetic sublattices. Both the magnetization and electrical resistivity reveal two phase transitions with one at T N,Eu ~21K and the other at T N,Mn ~346K. Single crystal neutron diffraction refinement indicates that both transitions are originated from magnetic ordering. Below T N,Mn , the Mn sublattice forms the C-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure with moments [(4.5±0.6)μB at 7 K] pointing along the a axis. Below T N,Eu , the Eu sublattice forms the canted A-type AFM structure with moments [(5.9±0.8)μB at 7 K] lying in the ac plane but pointing (41 ± 1)° away from the a axis. Quantitative analysis indicates that the spin-spin correlation length, while anisotropic, has long-range characteristic in all directions for both the Eu and Mn sublattices.
