Neutronics Analysis of Cold Critical KRUSTY Experiments using MCNP and Serpent

Kilowatt Reactor Using Stirling Technology (KRUSTY) is a prototype designed as a proof of concept for NASA’s Kilo power program, which was funded in order to create a small reactor for various space applications such as providing power for a colony on Mars or the moon and eventually as a possible option for powering rockets on deep space missions. KRUSTY was tested at the National Criticality Experiments Research Center (NCERC) located at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) from November 2017, through March 2018. The experimental campaign was conducted in four phases: com ponent critical experiments, cold critical experiments, warm critical runs, and high temperature demonstration. The component critical and cold critical experiments were used to determine the worth of the beryllium oxide (BeO) reflector rings and the boron carbide (B4C) control rod disks under different conditions. These conditions were altered by the addition and subtraction of other components in the assembly. The component critical phase was performed at atmospheric pressure and had four solid support rods spanning the center core; whereas the cold critical phase had the center core placed in a vacuum chamber and eight sodium-filled heat pipes spanning the center core region. This summary discusses the static neutronic analysis completed on the cold critical phase of the campaign using MCNP ® and Serpent. These two codes were used to assess any potential differences or biases in the simulation results. Understanding these potential biases is a key step toward the final goal of being able to fully analyze the transient experiments performed during phases 3 and 4 of the campaign.

Design Optimization of A generic Fissile Solution for Mo99 production using Electron Beam-based Neutron Generator using MCNP+CFD

Molybdenum-99 ( 99 Mo) is a medical isotope used in 80% of all medical imaging procedures today. However, 99 Mo is not directly administered to patients for imaging; its decay product, technetium-99m ( 99 mTc), is a metastable isotope with a half-life of ~6 hours. Such a short half-life does not allow for production, separation, and application to a patient before decaying further. Therefore, the solution is to produce the precursor to 99 mTc, 99 Mo. 99 Mo has a half-life of 66 hours, long enough to produce the material and send it to the desired location before it fully decays. Under National Nuclear Security Administration’s (NNSA) highly enriched uranium (HEU) minimization mission, the Material Management and Minimization (M3) office leads the Molybdenum-99 (Mo-99) program. A major goal of the Mo-99 program is to develop methods of producing 99 Mo using low enriched uranium (LEU) opposed to the traditionally used HEU domestically in the U.S. Internationally, LEU is the new standard for use in research reactors and isotope production facility. In this study, we introduce a generic fissile solution system for 99 Mo production facility meeting the design requirement of 1) LEU usage as fissile material and 2) subcritical fissile system coupled with a horizontal electron beam (E-beam) accelerator. The focus of this research is to optimize a fissile solution configuration for maximum 99 Mo production yield using MCNP model, and ultimately implement the optimized design with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model to understand thermal hydraulic behavior and solution convection characteristic. The report consists of two parts: 1) isotope yield calculation and criticality analysis with a wide range of parametric test matrix, and 2) thermal hydraulic analysis for solution mixing and cooling assessment.

Utilizing Sensitivity and Correlation Coefficients from MCNP and Whisper to Guide Microreactor Experiment Design

When designing experiments for full-scale reactor systems, MCNP®* and Whisper can be used to create neutronic models and compare the similarity of two nuclear systems via correlation coefficients for κ eff , effective multiplication factor. This thesis applies this framework to a conceptual heat-pipe, yttrium-hydride moderated microreactor system and experiments. The framework is intended as a supplement to other neutronics/thermal/multiphysics analyses and provides a concrete method to measure the neutronic similarity of two systems. By analyzing the shared nuclear data uncertainty, as well as sensitivity to nuclear data over all neutron energies, highly informative experiments can be designed to aid in the development of microreactor and other advanced reactor technologies and systems.

Some Notes on EPRDATA and MCNP

EPRDATA in MCNP comes in 2 libraries, EPRDATA12 and EPRDATA14. The acronym EPR stands for Electron Photon, and atomic Relaxation. The libraries are in an extended form of the ACE format. This extended data includes more physics than the more common MCPLIB photo-atomic libraries, such as MCPLIB63 and MCPLIB84.

Continuous-Energy Verification of MCNP Calculations Using One-Group Spherical and Slab Criticality Benchmarks

This work presents a continuous-energy Monte Carlo verification study of one group spherical and slab criticality benchmarks using the MCNP ®1 code. Classical tabulations and newly generated benchmark solutions obtained by direct numerical evaluation by the author are considered. The benchmarks span weakly to strongly multiplying regimes and provide analytically defined critical radii as functions of a single parameter, c .

Verification of the 3-Region Advanced Test Reactor MCNP Model

The verification of the 3-region homogenized fuel Advanced Test Reactor MCNP model. The 3-region model was compared to the 19-plate model found in the 94-CIC report. Flux tallies, energy deposition tallies, and quarter core mesh tallies were used to compare the two models. The 3-region model needed updating in order to make good comparisons between the models. The percent error from the flux and energy deposition tallies data shows that experiment positions inside the flux trap have higher errors than positions outside the fuel ring. The standard deviation data obtained from the mesh tallies shows that the two models agree within two standard deviations throughout the reactor. It is concluded that the model works adequately for what it is used for.

Comparison of MCNP thermal scattering laws to inelastic neutron scattering data

Neutron transport computations employ thermal scattering laws (TSLs) to account for the influence of material structure and collective excitations at low energy (≲ 10 eV). Recent work has been undertaken to improve TSL accuracy and expand the number of available materials in the Evaluated Nuclear Data File (ENDF). However, comparison of TSL to measured data is often sparse. In this work, we present a method to evaluate TSL accuracy in the Monte Carlo N-Particle (MCNP) code by simulating inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurement and comparing to data. The method is briefly described with example application to the recently released ENDF-VIII TSL library for polyethylene as well as a cryogenic PE TSL we are separately developing.

The MCNP ® 6 code: A decade of progress

After several years of effort involved in merging the Los Alamos National Laboratory MCNP5 and MCNPX codes, in 2013 the first production release of version 6 of the Monte Carlo N-Particle ® , or MCNP ® , code MCNP6.1 was distributed publicly. Since then, three significant releases have been issued: MCNP6.1.1beta in 2014, MCNP6.2 in 2018, and MCNP6.3 in 2023. While each release always contains new features, code enhancements, and bug fixes, each version has had a different primary focus, ranging from improved calculational efficiency to new powerful utilities and tools, to software modernization of the code base. With all that has been learned over the first decade of the MCNP6 code, continuous progress is being made toward a modernized, general-purpose Monte Carlo radiation transport code that remains a trusted resource for the global community of practitioners. This paper describes these first 10+ years of the MCNP6 code and its continually improving data libraries, and gives some insight into how the next decade is expected to unfold.

Validation of MCNP Critical Benchmark Models of PU-MET-FAST-016 [Slides]

The validation of PU-MET-FAST-016 contributed to the centralized LANL benchmark repository currently under development. The revisions made the MCNP models statistically, significantly more similar to the benchmark models. The overall impact on the USL is negligible. The revisions to the PU-MET-FAST-016 models provide value to the Los Alamos Benchmark Suite without invalidating past Whisper results.
